So while Pat is plugging his flight simulator in space I may as well try to plug another nerdcore Paradox game that's in development.

It's Paradox's first space game and first 4X and it looks like it'll be awesome. I'll just link all the dev diaries they've released so far.

Yeah. So among the various features will be properly simulated internal politics in your space Empire, with various factions vying for control. They're hoping it will make the mid/late game more interesting because that's where most 4X fall down. You get to the tipping point where you know you're going to win, but you still have to go through the motions and jump through the hoops to get there.

That's confirmed Erops. They've basically been doing something similar with rebels in their historical strategy games for a while now.

Yeah but I mean, if you have religious zealots revolt in france you aren't suddenly going to have a catholic state form in the outskirts of your country. Most are based somewhat after a realistic nation (scotland wanting out of UK) and not as procedural (Irish celtics wanting out of catholic Ireland, creating two separate irish states rather than a gimped catholic ireland)

I'm hoping for my collectivist space fungoid to have to deal with the individualistic idiots on the outerrealm who are too selfish to see the greater good and bail on my dominion to form their own that I can handle as I wish (be it ignore the fools and let them grow/die, perhaps another dominion takes them under their wing or they join my enemy and suddenly I have a problem)

Space combat is much improved from how it was on release, although it's still not like, amazingly tactical or anything. But if you expect fantastic tactical gameplay from a company which has made it's reputation making ultra-zoomd out strategy games then you're always gonna be dissapointed.

Well yeah which is why I'm excited for this expansion, it's more of what I consider them being good at, adding some internal development and depth to internal systems I very much look forward to.

Hey, the Utopia expansion is out. What do you guys think of it? The expansion of internal politics brings some much-needed depth to the game. On the other hand, I'm annoyed about the fact, that they didn't really change the warfare much.

Played a bit as a fanatic xenophile egalitarian species, it's good so far.

They didn't just pile on the new features, they changed or removed some things too. Feels fairly polished.

I think I need to turn up the difficulty of the AI as every time I play by midgame I can comfortably roll over all the dumb xenophobes who don't want to make alliances, and the others are generally not avaricious enough to have matched my massive expansion and resource accquisition.

I'm curious to see if I can make a "tall" empire work (occupy minimal territory but make use of the orbital habitat ascension perk and megastructures/ringworlds) and take advantage of the fact that the fewer colonies your empire has the easier it is to unlock traditions and ascend.

yeah like, most of the fun i got/will get out of stellaris is prooooobably already passed, but i felt guilty about pirating a game i was playing so much back then, so don't mind buying it now

Would you guys call this DLC or an expansion pack? Same with the EU4 releases.

Is Paradox giving you a bit more bang for your DLC buck or do we just not even consider it DLC?

tbh i think the term "expansion pack" sounds a bit antiquated these days? like i never really used the term for anything other than the sims games anyway, really

It kinda feels like a civ expansion, adding some new ways to play the game, adding some new systems, fixing stuff.
My current game I'm going full robo lovers, started with the robo tech unlocked from the start, and pushed torwards tech and the robo ascension perks.

It seems kinda hard to diplomacy with people unless they lik you from the start, not sure what I can do to make them less hostile other than just giving them free ****.
Even then, the only people I could get anything out of so far liked me from the start, and all the people who are grumpy kind of keep falling off.

As a result, I'm just kind of sitting in a corner in midgame, just minding my own business while everyone else is going to war.
Still having a bit of fun with it, but midgame isnt entirely fixed by any means.

Really want to try a hivemind race, or a xeno purging race. Those both sound really fun.

It depends on whether Corvette spam is still a viable strategy because people like me certain people tend to abuse them and ruin the game for everyone else.

That's been fixed for a while.

Corvettes are no longer the only ship size worth building. Destroyers do a good job of messing up corvettes now and generally speaking the four ship sizes all have much better defined roles. Different weapon types now also fill somewhat different roles, particularly torpedos.

Yeah no idea why that isn't an option. It's not like it's even that efficient to use the enhanced pop growth on small colonies to speed up development on the bigger plants.

I guess it's to stop you plonking down a ton of disposable colonies to get a big strategic advantage for some goal and then abandoning them all so you don't take the associated penalties or something?

I've done this a few times when either it was a small, strategic outpost planet, or after forcibly relocating a species with very different planet habitability to min-max my core region.

No, obviously not creating a vassal. Abandoning as in, voluntarilly removing all your pops from a planet so it reverts to being unoccupied.

Well I suppose Brandon is saying why would you abandon when you can unload the thing on the AI and keep a limit benefit rather than a sunk cost of just leaving the planet

There several cases when you may want to abandon a colony. Easing border tension is one. Maybe you want to create a no man's land between you and a other empire. Maybe one of the planets was a conquered one and vasalization is not the best option. Maybe it is a tomb world you inherited (or accentually colonized) and you do not want to piss off you religious pop or a religious empire. Maybe you want to make you empire more lean and focus more on building tall avoiding those low pop planets. Maybe you want to avoid the planet falling in the the wrong hands. (This last situation however must be tempered with the fact that you can not instantly abandon a planet. You can already gift the planet to someone else to avoid that it falls in rival already. And that is instant.)

These are some of the situations I have come by when I play where abandoning a colony have made sense.

Holy **** the Praethorian swarm is insane.

Just lost a game when they spawned in the empire right next to mine. Also i ended up being an AI's vassal that game, which kinda sucked. Was behind in tech and military all game, and constantly had resource shortages. I need to try something different, clearly.

Also my idiot AI Overlord and his federation decided that the swarm's arrival was the perfect time to declare war on the other big federation in the galaxy. *sigh*

Yeah one thing about the end game crisis events is that it tend to become a bit to much you vs the end game event. The AI do not really rally to fight these events. Hopefully they will improve on that a bit more.

The Prethoryn swarm are actually pretty easy if you have your fleets specced correctly.

They rely almost completely on missiles and strike craft so if you build a bunch of battleships with extreme range weapons and have a bunch of point defenses on everything else then you can take down fleets with considerably higher calculated strengths than your own.

Plus once you bomb all their infested planets the event immediately ends.

Yeah...I didn't have any long range weapons researched. Only weapon I had was laser-tree, specifically gamma lasers.

Well dang.

In my Utopia games I've found that, unsurprisingly, minmaxing your race for extreme science bonuses and/or unity bonuses really gives you an edge. Once you've accelerated beyond everyone else in the galaxy it's rare they're able to catch up (though you do risk awakening a fallen empire)
