Title: RUNBOW

Quote
Runbow is an action party game with a unique art style and a never-before seen colour mechanic that will keep you running back for more. Platforms and obstacles appear and disappear as the background colour changes, so if you can’t see something, it doesn’t exist. Whether you're playing alone or with friends, Runbow is fast, frantic, and a lot of fun.

Players can race against each other in The Runbow Run, or go head to head in a number of different modes including King of the Hill and Arena to name a few. Use the Wii U GamePad to become the malevolent ColourMaster controlling the colours and the obstacles in the level, or tackle our toughest game mode, The Bowhemoth, a 30+ minute platforming challenge that will put the patience and skill of even the toughest players to the test.

If dozens of game modes, hundreds of unlockable costumes, and a crazy, colourful gaming challenge sounds like fun, then you better get ready to Runbow!

So I've been looking for the right time to post this up here and I figure this is a good a time as any.  So for the last few months I've been working with a great gang of guys on RUNBOW, and now that we're officially on our way to Indiecade to go hang out with Nintendo, I figured I should get the shameless self promotion train a-rolling.

Looks really neat, man! It reminds me of a game I grabbed on the 3DS called Color Zen. I love the idea of messing with colors and changing the world around you. You have a demo? When does it drop on the eShop?

Did you hear that? Pat said he hates it and it's derivative.

Oh and this looks really cool, if I get any money on the eShop I'll definitely pick this up.

As it stands right now we don't have any sort of formal demo really.  We occasionally put together builds for showcases like Indiecade, but we're a long way's out from any sort of public demo.  If you were in town I'd invite you over by our office to do some testing though, as that's always a good time.

As far as an actual release, we're pushing for Summer 2015, though that might get nudged about a bit depending on how things go.

Hey Martyk, what's your experience been like working in video game development? What's your position/education/etc? Was it easy to get the job?

I'm curious, I mean, it's what I want to do also.

Hey Martyk, what's your experience been like working in video game development? What's your position/education/etc? Was it easy to get the job?

I'm curious, I mean, it's what I want to do also.

As far as education goes my background is primarily programming, but last year I enrolled in a game design post-grad at George Brown College here in Toronto.  That's sort of how this ball got rolling.  The way they set up the course they sort of encouraged us to think of ourselves as a studio.  We all ended up working really well together so we decided to try our hand at this whole "running a studio" business for real, and so we started up 13AM Games.

So I guess in that sense, it wasn't that tricky to get the job, what with myself being currently self-employed, but the road that got me here was a long one.  We all work late nights regularly and, so far at least, don't actually make any money.  That said, despite the amount of work that goes into developing a game, it's an absurd amount of fun and we all love what we do.  It's hard work, but it's always a blast, and times like this when we get to show off what we've been up to and hear people's feedback make all that hard work worth it.

Hey, that's pretty reassuring to hear. I'm in my third year of a CS degree and plan on doing a masters in game design. :P

Marty that game looks sick as ****! Cool idea and the trailer looks like it has some unique execution (the multi-striped color background seems like it would be incredibly hectic with the platform interactions, awesome). Good luck man!

Post by: PatMan33 on October 09, 2014, 11:55:21 am
Out of curiosity, are there any positions in game design or whatever for people that can't program?

I've tried it, I can't do it. Programming makes me crazy and is not anything like how my brain likes to operate. I just get mad and bored. But I know so much about games and mechanics and I know good games. I want to help but feel like I can't and that people don't want someone like me on a game project anyway because I "don't know how to do anything."

Any wisdom? :o
Title: Re: RUNBOW
Post by: martyk on October 09, 2014, 01:07:58 pm
You definitely do not need to know programing to get into game design.  Making a game requires a wide range of different skill sets, which I think is why we work so well together here at 13AM Games.  We've got a very eclectic mix of backgrounds.  In the nine of us on the team, only two of us are programmers, and before last year we were the only ones who had ever done anything like this before.  Skills that aren't immediately apparent as being useful can turn out to be a lot more essential than many would think.

We've got guys on the team with backgrounds in writing, film, engineering, advertisement, not to mention our artists and programmers.  All of them bring to the table their unique experiences, which allows us to have a broader base to work with when designing our games, and a wider skill set to draw from while developing them.

When applying for your postgrad thing did you have to show a portfolio?

I did.  It consisted of a mix of various different things that I'd worked on over the past few years.  In addition to some of the past games I had been involved in, I also included some artwork I've done, both 2D and 3D, some music, and some mapping work I had done in Source.

Do you guys all work for free?

Is there an equity breakdown somewhere? How neat!

Yep, we all currently work for free.

It's been really exciting.  Pretty much every morning we're off patrolling the internet seeing if any new articles have cropped up.  The amount of positive feedback we've been getting has been awesome.
Title: Re: RUNBOW
Post by: eropS on November 06, 2014, 05:09:09 pm
Aw neat how fun! How do events work for you guys? Do you have to register yourself or are you invited to showcase as a premium indie game type?
Title: Re: RUNBOW
Post by: martyk on November 07, 2014, 09:26:34 pm
It kinda varies on a case by case basis.  Most events we have to register on our own and figure it out independently.  In the case of Indiecade, Nintendo invited us down to join them in their booth, and we were happy to oblige.

Title: Re: RUNBOW
Post by: martyk on January 11, 2015, 08:13:34 pm
Things are going well.  We've got a very busy month ahead of us, but we should have some great results by the end of it.

Another bit of exciting news, we're planning to be at GDC and PAX East in March.  Around that time, we'll also be making some exciting announcements regarding some of the stuff we've been up to.  Needless to say, we're hoping to get people pretty excited with what we'll be bringing to the table.

What that also means, is if any of you guys are heading to PAX this year, you may have the unique honor of meeting me.

Awkward pictures with Marty as he sells his electronic gaming wares.
Title: Re: RUNBOW

awkward pictures as he is groped by pacman and all four ghosts

which is of course the initiation required for anyone wanting to enter the games industry
it can be tough but i hear its worse in other industries, like if you want to run a kfc franchise you have to survive the 11 trials of sanders

Good luck though, Marty. You've got a real smart game going there.

If so, we cleaned the snow off of it and tweaked the biome. You can see it again! :D

Glad you like the looks of it so far eropS!  It's been an exciting day to say the least.  Any time we make a big announcement we get this huge deluge of press and comments which are always a thrill to read.  And we read pretty much everything.  Those of us who are leaving for PAX tomorrow literally spent the whole day in the office refreshing google's most recent results on Runbow.  Kept us very busy.
Title: Re: RUNBOW
Post by: eropS on March 05, 2015, 12:25:19 am
Any criticism? How do you guys generally take it?

This is so neat
Title: Re: RUNBOW
Post by: martyk on March 17, 2015, 07:02:47 am
With anything like this there's always going to be criticism.  While we certainly read every comment we can find, we make a point of keeping from replying to them to avoid stirring up trouble.  We've been fortunate however that the vast majority of feedback has been very positive, so that's nice.

That said, we do keep a list of great comments, good and bad, for our own reference.

Can't give any details on prices yet.  We're still nailing down details for stuff like that.  As far as playtesting goes, we probably wouldn't be able to do any remote stuff, but we're discussing attending several more events between now and release, so hopefully you'll get a chance to see us somewhere.

Title: Re: RUNBOW
Post by: martyk on August 11, 2015, 02:59:16 pm
I'm one of the two programmers on the team.  The way actual work on the project was divided between us is sorta all over the place, but I did a lot of work on player functionality, controls, and general optimization, amongst other things.

That was just my main focus mind you.  As all nine of us working on the game are founders, we've all also had a hand in the design and business side of things, though certain team members were more focused on that than others.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

But nah, we've got all sorts of plans that we're not ready to talk about yet, but we're keeping busy.

I mean, Elsweyr or Black Marsh should be the next game in the series. But Bethesda will do anything they can to not have to do too much work, so they'll pick something that fits their palette of European-styled plains and mountains. With that one exotic area to make you think we did a lot of new stuff, but it was only that one place lol. Again.

If you're ever feeling unconfident, just remember that you're better than Bethesda.

We've been keeping busy with porting Runbow to 3DS.  As far as the lights, a combination of Runbow cash and sweet, sweet government grants helps keep us going.  We're very fortunate that Ontario is very supportive of the growing game development industry.

Also,

The gun shoots ribbons.  Put in some Spiderman/grappling hook physics.  You can thank me in cash.

Yep.  All the DLC from the Wii U version is also on the Steam one.

We'll see what happens.
