We've tried to have threads about individual sports or events in the past.  How about one unified thread?  All sports welcome!

So, World Cup.  Who do you think will win?  How badly is your country doing? Do Ivory Coast fans have the best hats?

How are the extra minutes after the 90th minute determined and added onto play?

Is it for sloppy play?
Title: Re: Wide World of Sports: The Thread!
Post by: Didero on June 17, 2014, 08:56:46 am
I'm pretty sure the extra time is calculated based on the amount of 'dead' time during the match, like when a referee hands out cards or somebody is injured.
Though don't quote me on that, I'm not that big a football fan. But with it being so popular here, it's pretty hard not to pick some stuff up.

Why don't they just stop the clock for commercial breaks like a normal sport?
Title: Re: Wide World of Sports: The Thread!
Post by: PatMan33 on June 17, 2014, 07:29:22 pm
Commercial breaks kill sports.

This is why I can only watch NHL.
Title: Re: Wide World of Sports: The Thread!
Post by: Didero on June 18, 2014, 02:38:43 am
They don't need to stop the game for commercial breaks, because there's like a 15 or 30 minute break after 45 minutes of play, so there's plenty of time to show ads then.

In the world of sports no one else here cares about. 30 players on the team I support have been accused of taking drugs. Really though the main part of this is the team admitted to it about a year and a half ago when they discovered the team doc was dodgy. I took the league this long to act on it and decide the players are accountable.

I find it interesting nobody used this thread to discuss the fact the US is still in the World Cup after that game we lost this past Thursday.

I am sincerely excited to see how much further we get! I am getting the sense probably we won't!

Next game for us is Tuesday, I believe.

Play consists of four players divided into teams of two. Members of the same team (partners) stand at opposite goals. This simply means partners stand at opposite ends of the court. Partners will alternate throwing and deflecting a flying disc.

FOOTBALL!

Superbowl is this Sunday!  There will be billion dollar commercials, jokes about properly inflated balls, Katy Perry probably not falling out of her costume, and maybe even a football game.

Which team are you rooting for?  Are you going to watch the Puppy Bowl instead?  Or are you going just make handegg jokes?

This was an awesome football game, for the record.

The fourth quarter comeback led by Tom Brady to secure his fourth superbowl ring. The incredible plays by the Seahawks, with the first year WR showing up huge for some major plays, the Kearse bobble that could. I mean, ****, this superbowl had almost everything, if there was a checklist of cool **** to happen in a Superbowl, this would hit basically all the boxes.

Then, Butler, the rookie, ****ing makes an amazing, as if god told him himself, play and intercepts the game ending touchdown. Patriots win?! What! Are you kidding me football?

Spectacular game.

I never got to see it, because I died in an accident.

i heard that sporter sportington had a rough time this year at sportland and almost missed out on sport
but by gum he pulled through with some of the best sports ive seen in the last ten years of sports
so id definitely say that sports fans certainly got their moneys worth at the sportlympics and we may see even more exciting sportsplay later on at sportscon 2015, hosted at sportsport by danny sport and matthew sport, no relation

i hope for more sporting sports at the next major sportsing sport

Title: Re: Wide World of Sports: The Thread!
Post by: Inkling on May 03, 2015, 11:40:28 am
Mayweather was boring but apparently that's how he fights.  Pacquiao made it boring too.  He wasn't fighting like someone giving it everything they had to be the champion of the world, he fought like someone getting paid $120 million plus whether he won or lost.

This fight was never going to live up to the absurd hype it was getting.  It went from a fight boxing fans had waited on for years, to the greatest fight of the century, to an event with massive crossover appeal that brought in casual fans and people who aren't fans of the sport (like me).  They were billing it as the event that would save and revitalize the sport of boxing.  I can't speak for everyone, but as for me I have even less interest in boxing than I had before.

Someone who doesn't watch fighting at all probably would've expected something like the Rocky movies, and they were most definitely going to be disappointed.  I'm a fan of mma and ufc.  The fight itself was about what I expected, but the event as a whole was terrible.  A fight card in ufc has the big main event fight, but is packed with several other fights that are often more entertaining than the finale.  This had two matches that no one watching or commenting seemed to care about in the slightest.  When the UFC is promoting a fight they focus on how great the two fighters are and show highlights of the two.  For this card the entire focus was on how big of a deal the fight was, all the money and celebrities that were pouring into Vegas for the night.  They wasted 20 minutes of an event that cost $100 to watch asking ex NBA players who don't know anything about boxing who they thought would win.  It felt very much like the coverage of the Kentucky Derby, actually.  It was it was glamorized, self-congratulatory, Trump-esqe bs, and a complete turnoff from the sport of boxing as a whole.

Finally America's refusal to engage with the interests of the rest of the world has a good result. The feds were so keen to knock "saahkker" down a peg they arrested all the crimebags.

Frankly I think FIFA should be dismantled entirely and there shouldn't be a single organisation in charge of all football in the world ever. Because **** 'em.

Katie Ledecky is inhuman.  She took a pool of the best swimmers on the planet and made it look like she was the only one in the pool.

I hate NBC so much.  They just spent more time showing two figure skaters playing dressup at Carnival than they spent covering Shot Put.  You know, the event that's actually in the summer Olympics.  The event where the US won gold today.  Someone push the NBC bosses into the green diving pool.

Something about people from Chicago.

Makes me not care when they win. They've got a smugness about them that I really dislike. It is slow and quiet and you don't notice how massive an ******* some of your Chicago friends are until you've known them for a year or two. So I don't care. Good work on the win, though.

I am happy that they won, but it a way kinda bummed. So many things in American culture are anchored on the fact The Cubs sucked. My favorite in reference is in The Martian.

The guys at NASA are discussing Mark Watney's situation, how he is all alone and helpless and thinks they abandoned him, "... what does that do to a man?"

cut to Mars

"I wonder how the Cubs are doing?"  -Mark Watney.

Now that the Cubs are not longer the worst of the worst it kind of kills the joke.

For real though there's a particular category of annoying un-self-aware nerd who I think would be best described as a "book fetishist". They talk a lot about how much they love reading, sometimes implying that other sedentary hobbies are less worthy. They almost exclusively read pulpy scifi, fantasy and young adult fiction and they share that "one billion fake words for weirdly specific feelings" meme on facebook, and anything from blogs called "word porn" or similar.

Basically they think reading books makes them special or is like, a hobby exclusively for really smart, sensitive, imaginative people. God damn assburger wordburgers.

I don't know too many nerds of that variety but I know what you mean.  Kind of in line with that "but at least they're reading!" line of thinking that pops up whenever there's a popular but not very deep book series.  I haven't bought it ever since the Goosebumps was big in elementary school.  Put down the book about the monster hamster that ate your teacher or the bondage themed Twilight fanfiction and go watch a nature documentary or something.

It is honestly surreal to hear about the superbowl and realise that it's not some niche thing. International sports are one thing - the Olympics make sense no matter how disconnected you are from society - but the superbowl is just the same as any weird contest in anything. What makes it so special?

And don't even say "hurr lurk it's because football is universal everyone plays it duh". It's a convoluted game that takes a ridiculous amount of setup to play. It's probably more complicated than baseball (and only stats nerds like baseball). You can't go down to the court and shoot some basket-touchdowns. It's not the "world's game", soccer, where all you need is a ball and you can play a solitaire version so it's universal to basically every culture on Earth.

Of course people who are into football are going to like the superbowl. But is marketing and consumerism the only reason anyone else cares? Are people really that shallow?

And yeah, I just poke fun at sports a bit because it's not really my thing. Wanna throw a frisbee? I could do that until I was buff as hell.

I just found it funny because it was superbowl and I honestly had no idea. Totally snuck up on me. There was just all this football commotion everywhere and I was like why tho.
Title: Re: Wide World of Sports: The Thread!
Post by: Inkling on February 06, 2017, 11:49:02 am
So a couple of reasons why football and the Superbowl are so big.

You can play pickup versions of the game like you're saying with soccer or basketball.  Two people to practice throwing, a couple people can play touch football (as opposed to full tackle).

And yeah, football is one of the biggest sports in America, America dominates world culture and your favorite english speaking parts of the internet, so you all end up hearing a lot about it.  It's big and loud and violent, all things Americans love.  The Superbowl has been built up as this big media event where companies compete to have crazy ads, that side of it is marketing that's built up over the years.

As for why other sports' finals don't get the same level of hype as the Superbowl, I think it's because they have multiple games.  Basketball, baseball, hockey, it's all a tournament.  Best of 7 games wins.  For football it all comes down to one game.  That's been part of the NFL and college football's success in general.   Basketball and baseball, there's a game on every night during the regular season so who cares if you miss a few.  In football a team only plays once a week, so if you're a fan of a specific team every game is more of a can't miss event.

See, in Football, the violence is hidden behind layers of padding, clothing, uniform, helmets. There's no identity on the field, they are football players, not people; hence why the NFL is so stringent on showmanship, they are not people, they are a team of elite players playing an elite game.

So, when one gets completely (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v-t2IkW3ypY) ****ing (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vLoObtI708o&t=36s) destroyed (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j9RfJwSkMU8), they can rotate in another with the same helmet, uniform, and general appearence and game goes on, no one talks about it, and it's forgotten. Therefore the violence isn't directed at a human, it's at a 'player', so it becomes more family friendly.

Quote
After an extraordinary effort to conceal a flattened catfish on his person, Waddell threw it onto the ice - in Pittsburgh - on Monday night. The Predators then scored three goals before Pittsburgh pulled out a 5-3 win in the opener. Waddell was charged with disorderly conduct, possessing instruments of crime and disrupting meetings or processions before they were withdrawn.

Catfish: worse than guns.
