I remember the soap opera this was based on.  It was weird in all the ways.

Weird, I don't remember the original.  Either you payed more attention to tvland, your parents bought a boxset of it, or you're older than I thought...

Ah yes, of course.  Carry on then.

So back to the movie.  It looks, well, excessively Tim Burton, if that's a thing.

I remember the original and this went way off track from that... I want to see it now!!  :D

I have to say, the more I see Johnny Depp in movies, the more I appreciate him as an actor. He can really take on new roles. Plus Tim Burton really likes him.

On the other hand, as has been pointed out many times and (more importantly) for several years now, all of his roles for Tim burton are nigh identical: eccentric pale-skinned man with a strange haircut/hat and a vaguely sinister aura. Again, this has all been said before.

And opposite Depp, and almost as static, is Helena Bonham Carter, usually as a pale-skinned lady with a strange haircut and a voluptuous figure. But that is not a criticism.

She is also married to Tim Burton.

Some people just get sick of things faster than others.

There was a cracked article recently that pointed out that Johnny Depp's more acclaimed recent roles were actually away from the Tim Burton partnership (Jack Sparrow and Rango were a couple of the given examples)*. It also suggested that they've been working together for so long that they've lost objectivity and just can't point out each other's dumb flaws properly or keep each other reined in any more. I think there is some truth to it.

*Come to think of it Carter was also much better received in the King's Speech than any of the kooky stuff she's done with Burton.

Saw this. It was okay. Just okay.
