Title: The Binding of Isaac
Post by: Tesla on November 27, 2011, 10:39:39 am
Wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Binding_of_Isaac_(video_game)) / Steam (http://www.google.ie/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=binding%20of%20isaac%20steam&source=web&cd=1&ved=0CCUQFjAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fstore.steampowered.com%2Fapp%2F113200%2F&ei=bIPSTreOKoi0hAfGxJXDDQ&usg=AFQjCNGHg1yn59C0ETZq3001pzkmvNVIkw&sig2=Js-5cr-fLtArGCBxnwoqhQ)

Anyone else finding this game incredibly addictive? It's a procedurally generated top down dungeon crawler dealy, with a ton of unique items and permadeath. It's also very strange, with lots of Christian references (if the name didn't tell you that) and horrifying monsters.

It also encourages replaying the game, since it'll take quite a few replays to unlock everything.
But yeah, very addicting, very fun.

EDIT: Oh, another fun thing: Almost every upgrade you pick up changes your appearance. You rarely look the same way each playthrough.

FINALLY there's a thread about this. I was wondering if I'd have to make one myself.

But now Didero's beaten Satan I have to beat him again as someone else if I want to stay ahead of him. None of you other jokers are anywhere near our level. Unless you are and you're not my steam friend so I can't monitor your stats in order to compete with you.

Edit: Adding Tesla to my steam friends so that I be alwayswatching his BoI stats (see wut I did thur.) I will monitor your progress WITH INTEREST.

Cain is by far the easiest to play, for me. The Lucky Foot helps with random pill pickups and chances of winning in Arcades. I also think it increases the chances of a random item pickup like coins or bombs dropping when you clear a room. Plus he's fast and powerful, and if you can use that properly his low health isn't that big of a problem.

I also tried beating Sheol with Isaac, but that's quite a bit harder. Though the D6 is fun to use.

Also, on one attempt this weekend I found a Dr. Fetus. It's a great upgrade, even if it is far too easy to hurt yourself too. Of course that run ended when I blew myself up :P

And if you don't care about spoilers and finding out what each item/card does on your own, this item list (http://bindingofisaac.wikia.com/wiki/Items) is indispensable.

I've beaten satan, but my achievements don't seem to want to unlock for anything I do in the game. :P

I got the Doctor Foetus powerup and effortlessly blasted through to satan.

Then I used my Bible.

Using the Bible while fighting Satan instakills YOU.

I can't get past the 3rd/4th floor. How are you guys doing this??
Title: Re: The Binding of Isaac
Post by: Didero on November 30, 2011, 12:52:25 am
Explore everything (at least for the first few floors), make sure you keep a key for the Item Room (the golden door), learn where the secret rooms are most likely to be. But most of all it's practise, I guess. Learn the enemies and how to best handle them.

Practice and finding the Doctor Fetus powerup in the first room, yeah*.

Also 2-3 copies of the Sun arcana wouldn't hurt.

I didn't even win the time that happened. Stupid Satan.

I think the Brimstone powerup is my favorite.  Sure, you have to give up a heart or two to get it, but it's always worth it.  It replaces your tears with a huge mouth laser, but it can only fire if you charge it up all the way.  It takes getting used to, but it can instakill almost every non-boss enemy, and even some of the bosses in two or three.  I think I've won 90% of the time I got the Brimstone.  The only time I didn't was when I also had a powerup that reduced my firing rate, which made the time it takes to charge the laser really long.  Good game.  But the difficulty is random, because it's based on the powerups and items you get.

People getting stuck on the first few floors are probably missing some of the game's base rules.
Every floor has a golden room that has an item in it. The first level's golden room doesn't need a key to open, whereas the others do. Every end-level boss you defeat also drops an item. If you don't pick up these items then you're really shooting yourself in the foot, as far as survival goes. Save your coins until you have 15, before you visit the shop, as that is the upper price level for the good items. In a pinch, bomb the slot machines, beggars, health draining machines and arcade vendors for a few random coins/hearts/bombs/keys. If you have a surplus of coins, try donating to the beggar a few times, as he will give you something in return. Sometimes just something small, but the more you spend, the more likely he is to drop an item (map/compass/food/other minor item). The vending machines, when played repeatedly, will also explode of their own accord, sometimes leaving a minor item, and other times giving you a dollar bill (100 coins). If you have a full-health pill or a lot of hearts laying around in finished rooms, trade your health for cash at the machine repeatedly, and eventually it will explode leaving a health-based item behind, normally a blood-bag which is pretty damn awesome. Stones can be bombed over gaps to create bridges in a pinch, too.

Also, don't be too reckless. I can see how an impatient gamer would happily waltz into the bullets out of aggressive habit, but evasion is the biggest part of this game. If you're having real trouble, play the first level until you get your golden-room item, and if you feel it to be useless, restart. Repeat this until you get good golden room and bossroom drops. If you're having trouble surviving, avoid making deals with the devil, as those extra max hearts are often not worth the small boosts in power.

Didn't know about bombing machines or making bridges over holes. Thanks.

Giving money to those little beggars is usually a good idea. You can almost always get an upgrade for cheaper than it would be to buy it from a store. The upgrade is random though, so if you've got very little money, hanging onto that may be a better idea.

I did it! ;D

And boy was it satisfying.

Also, I love just how many powerups you get by the end. You're a friggin' mutant.

Is it possible to save? This game is horribly addicting and I've restarted a ton of times. Can't get past the basement.  :-\
Title: Re: The Binding of Isaac
Post by: Celdur on December 31, 2011, 02:40:21 pm
part of the point of the game is that you cannot save
so you have to be carefull and learn how the game works to get further each time you start again

thats also why the dungeon is random each time, it counts on you losing a whole lot before getting through
Title: Re: The Binding of Isaac
Post by: LadyM on December 31, 2011, 02:48:51 pm
It never saves? So you could get really far and have to start over? I love the randomness of the dungeons, at least makes it interesting when I restart. I really suck at this.
Title: Re: The Binding of Isaac
Post by: /lurk on December 31, 2011, 03:03:51 pm
Don't worry, everyone starts off sucking. You'll be crying over Monstro's grave in no time.

There are some neat tricks to beating some of the bosses (mom in particular) that you might have to fight them a few times to learn.

Edit: Oh my goodness Tesla I looked at your stats on steam.

How do you even get eighty hours and a hundred deaths without finishing Sheol.
Title: Re: The Binding of Isaac
Post by: Tesla on January 02, 2012, 02:56:33 am
80 hours - leaving it running when I need to go out mid-game.

100 deaths - I usually kill myself if I don't like the item on the first floor.

(and I have reached Sheol once >_>)

You can exit back to the main menu through the pause screen, you know~
Title: Re: The Binding of Isaac
Post by: Tesla on January 02, 2012, 12:03:48 pm
Yeah, but you don't get an achievement for doing that 100 times!
Title: Re: The Binding of Isaac
Post by: /lurk on January 02, 2012, 07:03:44 pm
Well I've killed Satan with every character, I figure I'll go for the no-damage clear achievments, right?

In the caves, get hit exactly once by some rubbish weak enemy.
In the depths, get hit exactly once by a stupid laser guy.
In the womb, get hit exactly once by a stupid laser eye.
In Sheol, get hit exactly once by a stupid laser eye.

:IIIIIIIIIII

On the other hand, Doctor Fetus+Blast damage up+homing bombs makes it impossible to actually lose.

Edit: Apparently you don't need those achievements to be Golden God. :IIIIIIIIII

It helps that some of the best damn items in the game are books.

Krampus' head is THE BEST.

It's like Christmas every time he shows up.

Oh. Someone finally commented.

I haven't met Krampus yet. :(

I am loving this game though. Still working on unlocking Sheol. I think I've beat mom's heart like 7-8 times so far.

Got to Sheol on my fourth playthrough, which was my second time beating mom.

This game seems significantly easier than the first.

It's still fun, though.
Title: Re: The Binding of Isaac
Post by: Tesla on November 08, 2014, 04:54:45 am
How is Sheol unlocked? I feel like I'm doing something wrong.

It's definitely easier though, but I don't credit that to design. A lot of the difficulty in the original game came from flash - when there were a lot of entities in the room things got really laggy and it became difficult to predict where everything was going. Now everything is super smooth.

There's also the fact that you're just a lot better at the game now. :P

EDIT - Never mind. Unlocked Sheol.  I guess you got a devil room after you beat mom?

Came THIS close to beating Isaac. It was neck and neck. His light beam move is a lot less avoidable now.

2 fun exploits existing in the current version (1.41) :

1) It's possible to "quicksave" and return to it if you die. Basically, every time you exit to the main screen and then click "continue" you save. If you die, immediately pause before the "dear diary..." screen and Alt-F4 out of the game. You can then start it back up and the continue point will still be there. Useful for the Lost if you like cheating. :P

2) On the Krampus fight, when you beat him, pause the game as soon as you see that Krampus' item has spawned but before his death animation has ended. Exit and continue, and Krampus will still be alive but his spawned item will still be there. You can repeat this as many times as you like, although you'll just end up with a bunch of lumps of coal and krampus heads. Unless you have the D6, which means you can get a roomful of free devil room items...

The problem with abusing the duplication indefinitely turned out to be the duplicated cards. There were a ton of THE MOONS in that room and they kept displacing the rune of jera making it tricky to keep spamming (or even get out of the room).
