Title: Canceled too soon!
Post by: sgore on December 16, 2005, 05:09:18 pm
It had to have happend to you at least once. You tune into this new show you've really been getting into. You can't wait for the next episode. And suddenly you realize that you're watching an old episode of "Laverne and Shirley". No you aren't losing your mind. (At least I don't think you are...) Your show was canceled. And no amount of critic acclaim saved it.

This is post for you to list the shows you got into that became just that "Canceled too soon" And when i say too soon, I mean 2 seasons or under. (Although my favorite show i think was taken off too soon after 4 seasons, the line seems to fit at 2 seasons, there's rumors of them bringing back my favorite show though for a 5th seasons. i hope they do...)

Anyway I'll start off with 1:

Wonderfalls- Takes place and is filmed on location in niagra falls. (though a lot is flimed on the canadian side) It's an hour long comedy about a girl named Jaye Tyler(Caroline Dhavernas) "Overeducated and Unemployable" is basicly how she was labled in the highschool yearbook. She got a Philosiphy degree from Brown, and works as a clerk in a gift shop. Suddenly After a kind of semi near death experiance, Inanimate objects (with Animal Faces) start talking to her. The first of which is a wax lion(seen here: http://www.12gauge.com/images/2004/wonderfalls.jpg) , who tells her not to give change back to a woman. The woman takes her change, while Jaye is staring in disbelief at the lion. The woman's purse gets stolen immidiatly after she leaves. Jaye faints not too soon afterwards...Very well written show. Anyway, more animals (a brass monkey statuette, and a stuffed toy bear to name a couple) start talking to her and telling her to do things, which is very hard for her to deal with. Think of it as a "Joan of Arcadia" only Joan has WASP type parents, lives in a trailer park, Is 24, And instead of god coming in diffrent forms, its a bunch of animal shaped objects, and you never find out who's really speaking though them or what its all truly leading up to. They only made 13 episodes before being canciled, and Fox only aired 4.  >:( i do have them all on DVD though. (If you want to check it out, the dvd's are still on sale in most places.) Great show, Great reviews.

VR-5
a woman is able to enter people's minds through the internet.  she works on behalf of a mysterious "Comittee", using her abilities to do investigations, serving their shadowy agenda.  an incredibly deep show i wasn't able to understand at the age of ten.
reason for cancellation: OMG CONSPIRACY!!!  apparently someone didn't want the masses knowing too much, or maybe they just didn't care.

Carnivale - two seasons and it was canceled. Not sure why but it was good. It was on HBO

The first season was okay, and the second season was really good, except for the ending. But it moved way way way too slow. Hence it was cancelled.

There are probably like 50 shows I can list here, but I think I will go with Masquerade (http://www.tv.com/masquerade/show/6117/summary.html&full_summary=1) from 1983. That was great show that was killed way too quickly. Here is the summary as I'm sure that nobody else watched it (hence why it was canceled):

Masquerade was a stylish international action series from producer Glen A. Larson. Rod Taylor starred as Lavender, a veteran spy who was weary of seeing his comrades die at the hands of the enemy. The problem, he concluded, was that by the time a spy was recruited, trained, and ready to go into the field, the enemy had identified and targeted them for assassination. Lavender's idea was to begin recruiting everday Americans with special skills to become temporary spies who could participate in one mission then return quietly to their normal lives. Once assembled, they would travel together as a group of tourists visiting a foreign country -- sight-seeing by day and collaborating on their mission by night. When the mission was completed, they would each receive pay equivalent to a year's salary (no taxes) and go their separate ways. While Lavender oversaw the missions, his assistants Danny and Casey kept careful tabs on the recruits, offering advice and encouragement when needed.

Each episode began with Lavender, gun in hand, turning to the TV audience and saying: "The United States of America would like to invite you...to come spy with me."

Firefly: Yeah we got the movie serenity but only one season of a fantastic show. Holds his dvd box set of the series tightly and sobs.

Futurama was too many season to be listed here but I will mention it anyway.

I keep hoping that Invader Zim will pull a Family Guy and get pulled back on the air. Nobody didn't like that show, I don't know what the hell happened.

I second Firefly - I only discovered it 2 months ago myself.  It was a combination of wretched timeslot and an off-putting concept (to me at least) - wild west with spaceships.  Yet it's FANTASTIC!

Crusader - Picks up where Babylon 5 (the greatest sci-fi show ever IMHO) left off.  Roughly half of the episodes of the one season that ran were amazingly poor, and the theme song is horrific, but towards the end of the first season, it really began to find its legs, I thought, and...well....it's from the Babylon 5 guys!!!  Of course, I didn't know of it's existence either until 2 years after it was cancelled, so go figure...  Now, the story of the B5 universe is unfinished :(

Profit, though AFAIK, the UK got to see a couple more episodes than the US, before it was taken off the air.  Now if only it would get a R2 DVD release.

What else?  Space: Above & Beyond, anyone?  Could probably list a few more if I thought about it.

Nickelodeon wasn't the place for it.  It catered to a slightly older crowd.

Then again.. I doubt they'll ever air the pilot episode again...

At the risk of being severely ostracized....the XFL.

Yeah, the product was pretty rough early on, but by the end of the first season it was really coalescing into something very entertaining.  Too bad most people stopped watching after the first 2 weeks :(

I've got another one
sports night:
Half hour episode Dramedy that takes place in NYC where they broadcast a evening sports news show called "Sports night". 2 seasons Ran from 1998 to 2000

Great cast. Watch it and you'll feel a little less betrayed that Sabrina Lloyd left sliders, since this is where she went... You also may recognize Joshua Malina if you watch the west wing, or Felicity Huffman from desperate housewives. You may recognize Robert Guillaume from, well come on it's Robert Guillaume! Josh Charles and Peter Krause, who play the co-anchors also have pretty notable careers.

In the last episode they had a last laugh at ABC for canceling them. In the show, everyone was worried about what would happen to their show, since their fictional network, CSC, was going under. The guy who ends up buying the network says near the end of the episode "Anyone who can't make money with sports night, doesn't deserve to be in the business of making money."

Cause of Death: Ratings. They won a handful of awards, Emmy's and other such ones. (including one for best show you're not watching.)

Nickelodeon never cancels shows, they just slowly make each episode release farther apart until the last one, then they try to tell the kids that there are still episodes coming, you just need to keep watching.

how true.
Good news(at least in my opinion): after 2 years, give or take a few months, they're finally making a 5th season of my favorite show (the one i mentioned earlier) to be released i think very early 2006. (now when it gets dubbed into english so i can watch it, I don't know.)

The creator said that he did not want to continue with the show either.

Andy Richter Controls the Universe and Greg the Bunny.

Two SUPERB shows that FOX canceled... GO FIGURE!

I totally agree with Star Trek Enterprise... Sure they may have taken a few too many episodes trying to finish a story arc, but there were some real gems in there.  The alternate universe episodes (2) were great.

I didn't even know about this show until it was cancelled, I had to download all of the episodes.

I think what got it cancelled was just that it took too long for something to happen... They would have one whole season about one conflict, and it would take forever, at first it would be interesting, but by the end it got kinda boring... Ya ya ya, come on, we know whats happening...

I just thought of another one to add to the list. Twilight zone, the 2002-03 revival.
Forest Whitaker (seen here: http://www.scifiuk.com/data/shows/newtwilightzone/images/episodes.jpg) actually made a very good host.
My favorite episodes included
"How much do you love your kid": http://www.tv.com/the-twilight-zone-2002/how-much-do-you-love-your-kid/episode/231275/recap.html which explores what would happen if reality shows kept going too far...
The sims Reminicent "Upgrade": http://www.tv.com/the-twilight-zone-2002/upgrade/episode/202120/recap.html
And the bonechilling "Sunrise": http://www.tv.com/the-twilight-zone-2002/sunrise/episode/242703/recap.html

You can get the whole series on dvd for like $15. I might...

I'm gonna go ahead and cast another vote for "Sports Night" although you can see some of Emperor Sorkin's new clothes with that show, since plot lines, bits of dialogue, etc. often found their way into episodes of "The West Wing" a few seasons later.

I'll also toss in "Early Edition" -- basic premise is about a guy who gets a newspaper with tomorrow's news a day early, and he can try and change things. It's not the most original premise (see "Leap, Quantum" ;) ), but it was well done.

Pirates of Darkwater! It was cut way too soon, you never find out if they found the last treasure! And the fact that they aren't on DVD or even more then one video sucks.

Fox seems to have a habit of canceling great shows.
In that line of thought I'm adding Andy Ricther Controls the Universe  (http://www.tv.com/andy-richter-controls-the-universe/show/5905/summary.html?q=Andy%20Richter) and The Critic (http://www.tv.com/the-critic/show/2265/summary.html?q=The+Critic).

In Australia, they always cancel good shows and such.  If they are doing well in America, they still seem to cancel them, or just show the episodes over a long timespan until nobody notices (well i do!!).  Anyway, i remember a show i liked Earth 2, which was cancelled here i think after a few episodes.  I was also sad when Sliders suddenly slipped away into another dimension only to return very late at night 3 years later..and still havent seen all of season 5 (although the show was never the same when Jerry O'connel left and Sabrina Lloyd and John Ryse Davies (the proffessor). The first two seasons of sliders were still the best, it just SLID away after that..lol

i'm hoping one day remake of sliders! ;)

Actually fox is in talks to bring futurama back.

Also an Addition to the list(should I actually put in a list?): Early Edition. http://www.tv.com/early-edition/show/263/summary.html
Yes it fits out of my designated peramiters, (running for about 4 seasons) but still, This was a really good show that didn't get the desirved attention it should have. It was about a guy in Chicago who got tommorows newspaper a day early. He went around trying to stop all the bad things in the Paper from happening. A very intresting premise into a really good series. It airs in reruns on Pax at the moment. Orignally on CBS.

Adding 2 more:

There was commited: http://www.tv.com/committed/show/24278/summary.html?q=committed It was like Dharma and Greg only Dharma was named Marni, and There was an out of practice clown in the apartment too. Funny.

Reason for being Canseled: I don't know, Maybe they were just having a really dumb day at NBC

And There was Do Over: http://www.tv.com/do-over/show/8168/summary.html?q=Do%20Over Which was about a 34 year old who gets sent back 20 years to the 1980's to Relive his high school years. Very funny. My favorite episode is the one where He sings Greenday's "Time of your life" in front of his school. They love the song. Only Problem is he's not Greenday and when hit with the moral dilemma of stealing another persons music His friend (Who knows about his being from the future) tries to convice him since it hasn't been writen yet it isn't stealing.
Also a funny running gag, The Main character's mom keeps ending up inventing stuff popular later on but his father keeps saying the ideas will never work. Among other things she invents Lunchables, Glad Twist Tie trash Bags, and Post-It notes.

Reason for being canseled: Maybe too similar sounding to stand out from an ABC show "That was then" premering (And Canceled) around the same time. Major diffrence, In Do over he was trapped doing the last 20 years over. In That was then, He keeps jumping back and forth in time. I still like Do over though.

i think the deal was that they appealed to US military types/wannabes and other patriots as their core audience... and then they started all this creepy Evil Government stuff and turned them off.

the Battlestar Galactica remake, on the other hand, started with self-reflection from the get-go.

Golden Palace. Basicly Take the golden girls, minus dorathy, and make them hotel owners. That's actually the premise of the show. It was the unoffical last season of the show. Of course it wasn't the same without Arthur.

They're doing four movies, and then a 5th series.  But it probably won't be for a while.
Great news though, Futurama is one of the best shows ever, a lot funnier than the Simpsons.  I can't understand why it was cancelled in the first place.

Firefly. Best Sci-Fi show since Star Trek, and it was cancelled after a mere 15 episodes, with several never even aired. We still got Serenity out of the whole deal though.

Also, Star Trek Enterprise. Sure, may not have been the best Trek ever, but it surely deserved better.

Mystery Science Theatre 3000!

Okay back to the world of the reasonable, I am surprised that the show lived for 10 years. I'm GLAD it did, but I still pine for more. The only thing that even remotely looks like it is "Cheap Seats", the Sklar brothers' palty attempt to MST old ESPN sports footage. They fail miserably, though there IS one show, where a segment of the show is actually MST3Ked by the old cast OF mst3k, or at least people who sound like them. (not the sports footage itself, the Sklar brothers).

Anyway, enough of my MST3K rant. What were we talking about again?  ;D

I would agree. I play the games all the time, and I was extremely excited for the show. It was pretty good too, but they did cut out at a most inconvieniant moment.

Ruruoni Kenshin

To be fair, Toothy, Kenshin should have been cancelled or at the very least put on indefinite hiatus. The reason it was cancelled originally in Japan was because the anime had caught up to the manga, so the 3rd season was based on just the animators' ideas -- and they were terrible by contrast.

As for Naruto: That show is never ending. Ever. Masashi Kishimoto, the creator of Naruto, has said that he has no clear idea as to how long Naruto is going to be but he will likely continue the manga for several more years at the very least. The anime is not really catching up with the manga because Kishimoto is inhumanly fast and produces something on the level of 10 pages per week. So there will be more for the anime to show for the foreseeable future.

Juuni Kokki (12 kingdoms)
I heard they stopped making them because the author hasn't put out a new book in years, so they don't really know where to go from here.
Also, I'm not sure I could keep watching Kenshin, now that I've seen the last movie. :(

...and they made a movie??
Title: Re: Canceled too soon!

Kenshin goes in this order chronologically:

Samurai X: Trust & Betrayal

Rurouni Kenshin: The TV Series

Rurouni Kenshin: The Movie [which sucked]

Samurai X: Reflections [which didn't]

The Samurai X shows feature a very different style of animation and are noticeably darker than the core series. Reflections is the final Kenshin storyline.

And yes, 12 Kingdoms (the anime) moved too fast for its own good and caught up with the author and is no longer in production because of it. The same, I believe, is happening to Crest of the Stars.

There was an old cartoon (1993) Called Bots Master.. I loved that show to no end.. It sadly only ran for one season (with a cliffhanger ending at that :( ) I loved that show though. I HAD every episode on tape, sadly most got taped over. I've downloaded some episodes and actually found a website that was selling some actual VHS episodes (I bought their last two). Although when I mention it, no one ever seems to remember it :p

Here's my top 5:

1. Samurai Jack (4 seasons is not enough)
2. Samurai Pizza Cats (I downloaded the theme song a few months ago just cause I missed it so much from my childhood)
3. The Pretender (should never have been cancelled)
4. Sliders (Why Jerry... Why?)
5. Dead Like Me (for obvious reasons)

Arrested Development
Firefly
Futurama

And a few that aren't:

Oblongs
Invader Zim
Home Movies

Mortal Kombat: Conquest.  It was surprisingly really quite good.  Even the actors were all good, the guy who played Rayden inparticulary, he was hilarious.
It certainly wasn't the best show ever, but it didn't deserve to be cancelled after the first season.

Here's my top 5:

1. Samurai Jack (4 seasons is not enough)

Totally agree. :)

Quote
2. Samurai Pizza Cats (I downloaded the theme song a few months ago just cause I missed it so much from my childhood)

I loved that show too.

Quote
3. The Pretender (should never have been cancelled)

Sorry, I wanted that show cancelled after the first four episodes alone.

Quote
4. Sliders (Why Jerry... Why?)

Okay, first of all ... I liked elements of Sliders. But it deserved to be cancelled and not because Jerry left. It should've been cancelled because the writers had no frothing clue what continuity is. It had the poorest episode-to-episode continuity that I have ever seen on a show that you were supposed to take at all seriously -- in particular when it came to the characters themselves, which is even worse. One episode, Wade and Quinn are in love, everything's great; the next, they're practically clawing each other's eyes out with no explanation what happened in between to cause the change. That's poor writing.

Thankfully, Sabrina LLoyd was able to find her way to a really great show with stellar writing, Sports Night. Of course that show didn't last very long either. :(

Quote
5. Dead Like Me (for obvious reasons)

Any show featuring Mandy Patinkin should remain on the air till the end of time. Loved him as an actor ever since Princess Bride.

The only problem with it being on sci-fi is that it's probably edited and therefore forced to suck. Or at least not be as good as it was on showtime or whatever channel it aired on. Or was it on a regular channel?

Though it was mentioned only briefly and quite some time ago I also have to mention I was getting really interested in Surface too. The last new episode I saw was right after the tsunami hit and flooded the town and they were all stuck on top of the church and the creatures were swimming through the water. Think it was the season final. Then I lost track of what time and day it came on and apparently it just disappeared altogether.

Thought of another one that I liked and would have liked to see more of. Brimstone, starring Peter Horton of 30 something fame, and John Glover, currently playing the role of Lex's father on smallville. Great show about a cop who was killed in the line of duty and went to hell for a murder he commited while alive. The devil decides to let him out in exchange for hunting down and sending back to hell a number of escapees, who's names are written in ....angelic script? on his arms. Each time he sends one back, he loses one of those tattoos. A rather simplistic way of keeping track I guess. Anyway, I thought it was a pretty good show, but it only aired for the one season.

i agree with sliders, that show spiraled off into to many directions.
also the episode (the last one?) where they slide home, then Quinn
decide's its not the real home because of a squeaky fence!
of course as soon as they slide out of there, you see the repairman
leaving the house and his mother thanking him....that annoyed the hell out of me.

Titus ( http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0205700/ )
A show about a guy, his girlfriend , his dumb ass brother, his efemminet ( sp ) best friend, his alchoholic father, and his schizophrenic mother. Was a dark and funny as hell comedy.
Cause of Death: Switched timeslots 4 times in one season. Fox really wanted this one dead.

Also I put in more votes for The Lone Gunmen ( best thing to come outta X-Files ) and Commited. Commited was gold and they let it slip. Its kinda like if they had let Scrubs slip over at NBC ( they nearly have twice ) .

There was this TV Series in the late seventies-early eighties called Soap (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soap_%28TV_series%29).

Man, very funny show. But the last episode seemed to end with a cliffhangar.

It was basically a comedy sitcom that made fun of Soap Opera type shows.

"The show was controversial for its time, dealing openly with the topics of homosexuality, marital infidelity, impotence, interracial marriage, and gay parenting."

Probably one of the more well-known actors on the show was Billy Crystal. Good actor. I rather liked Richard Mulligan in the series though.

Is there any signs that it might be canceled? I love it.

NBC had scheduled to drop Journeyman even before they ran out of episodes... they were actually going to dump it in the middle of a two parter in the coming weeks... luckily, they reversed that and decided to at least air the ones they have.  However, it looks doubtful they will extend Journeyman to a full season order.

I think NBC is bonkers... Journeyman is much better than that Bionic Marshmallow.  :P

I agree, Bionic woman isn't impressive. I thought I'd enjoy it, but I didn't. Journeyman I had high hopes for just because I loved Kevin McKidd from Rome (which also ironically was canceled too soon).  I have my fingers crossed, but I have a sinking feeling it won't make it.

Bionic woman is pretty good, in my opinion, but they need to stop this whole thing with each episode having and individual little threat while ignoring the whole thing about Jamie going to die soon. And what about that blonde bionic woman? It's been a while since we've seen her.

Anyway, I'm kinda sad about scrubs having its last season. Wish it coulda lasted loner, but there wasn't much they hadn't covered.

Honestly I think the whole shes going to die in five years thing was thrown out the window after they said it. If the show lasts long enough I'm sure they'll be a small arc and they'll quickly come  up with some cure.  I did like the first few episodes but for me it went downhill and it just got boring..

Think everyone will agree with me on this,

Stroker and Hoop.

Everyone knows that Adult Swim is going down the drain, and I think this is part of the reason. They're losing futurama at the end of the year if I heard right, they ending a lot of their shows, and they keep show never-ending anime serieses (inuyasha anyone?).
Really was uncalled for for them to cancel Stroker and Hoop.

The writers all ready had some of the episodes in season 2 all ready planned out.

The 4400 and Dead Zone are both history as well.

Wow, that came way out of left field. I didn't see that happening. Not yet anyway, I know the 4400 was struggling, but I hadn't even heard talk of cancel.  The fact they were both filmed in Canada makes me wonder if the weak American dollar has naything to do with it. Previously the popular thing would be to film in Canada because the people there are just as talented, but because of the then weak Canadian dollar it didn't cost as much. With the Canadian Dollar rising and American Dollar dropping to them being on par, many companies are rethinking about filming in Canada because the benefit is gone. Popular shows like Stargate Atlantis will still continue, but shows which weren't bringing in as much money might have been an 'acceptable loss'

the reason i think it was cancelled too soon is, i had written an episode, and it was sitting on the producer's desk the day the show was cancelled.  true story.  (a friend of mine from my musician days had moved to LA and was appearing reguarly on "dance machine," and "married with children" would tape in another part of the same studio, so my friend became friends with david faustino and billy jayne, and the 3 of them used to go out on the town together.)  i sent my friend my script, he loved it, gave it to billy jayne, he loved it and passed it on to the producer.  then the show got cancelled and so ended my best shot at being an actual hollywood writer.   :-[

Not that I wanna promote piracy (at least where I live it's legal to download TV Shows as far as they show the source (TV Channel or whatever)) but the first 3 episodes of Jericho leaked at the same time (about 15 hours ago) to torrent websites, and apparently the show is gonna continue thanks to fans.

you can't watch them on CBS.com anymore?

oh, and speaking of pirates...i would've liked to watch the rest of the "pirate master" episodes on a larger screen than my computer...

CBS doesn't let every country watch them, and these are leaked versions so they will only come out in February 12th (the first one).

What happened is that all the fans sent in packets of nuts to the chief of CBS and so she wrote a statement saying that she would allow a short second season of 7 episodes, airing from the 7th of february i think. But she did also state that this was it and it was now down to the ratings. If Jericho gets the ratings then it will continue. If it doesn't then it's going the way of the cancel!

yeah i know, those WERE great, and so was cow & chicken.  (that red dude with the big butt used to crack my sh** up.)

from what i understand (and a friend of a friend of mine works for Nick)...they sign these animator folks to a 3-year deal, work them absolutely to death making up to 5 years' worth of episodes, then just don't renew the contract at the end.  unless it's some spiralling phenomenal cash cow like spongebob...

Samurai Jack.

He will return.

And yes,  maybe as the creators said that they will finish the story for Jack. But obviously they have to change actors for Aku as Mako, the original Vioce actor for him, hass passed. In case you didn't know he was also the voice of Iroh from Avatar. RIP Mako  :'(

I totally agree with that, they had way too many characters at once in the story usually diverging into a totally other story. Well If JLU had a story to begin with it was to cluttered with too many characters on screen and too many story's combining together. I know they were just trying to squeeze in more content and characters but having the lucky seven originals would've been better.

Almost Human was another Fox show not produced by Fox.  No matter how good these shows are, Fox cancels them.  Fox wants successful shows without paying successful show prices... and when they are not produced in house, that will never happen.
To be fair to Fox, Almost Human wasn't actually that good.  There were a lot of neat ideas, and the cast chemistry was good, but the execution suffered.

Oh, we're not saying that Fox doesn't have a habit of killing good shows for bad reasons.  I love Firefly.

I'm just saying that Almost Human kinda deserved it.  Instead of doing actual world building they introduced a crazy future thing every week that would have been interesting if it were ever referenced again, and then never referenced it again.

Seriously, they drop THE WALL in out of nowhere and then refuse to explain anything about it.

Also, the psychic lady was a terrible addition to a sci-fi show.

I still rage about Metalocalypse's final season not getting greenlit by Adult Swim. The story had almost concluded and after an amazing hour-long rock opera, they pull the plug!

This was one of those shows I didn't really get at first. But I stayed with it and watched and rewatched it until I had a better understanding. Metalocalypse is borderline genius in the way it balances parody of Metal with praise of Metal. And it's a damn shame that it gets cancelled so late in its arc while Adult Swim keeps borderline garbage on  its network. Berndon Small, the creator says he'll find a way to finish the story. His hope was to do a big mini-series ending for it and the network rejected it outright. What a goddamn shame. :-\

Jesus NONE OF THIS IS SAFE FOR WORK why would you even play these in the office do you want to get fired!?
