Title: This is a thread for Sports discussion. In it, we will discuss Sports.
Post by: sgore on May 07, 2011, 12:39:48 pm
I've noticed that even in our 6+ years as a forum, nobody ever set up a Sports thread. (We have a "World Cup" thread, but that's about it for sports conversation.)
I've also noticed that this is a thing many people talk about with much amusement. I have seen them do it in places. Whole television networks.
I...I am new at this. I would like to learn how to do this kind of conversation.

I think if we work together, this is a conversation that we can do.

Starting off, I'm actually a bit of a baseball fan. I've been to a number of local games with my family. There's a minor league team in our area that's actually pretty good (at least, compared to the other minor league teams that come to play them...) Unfortunately, I rarely ever get a chance to follow the regular Major League season. (I usually don't even know who's playing in the world series until shortly before it starts up).

Also, this:

There's also a hockey team in our city, a relatively new one in fact. (A farm team for the NJ Devils). I haven't been to any of their games yet. Not since our native home team up and left the city a few years back. Wounds are still too fresh. I'm hoping to go at some point though.
But anyway, yes.
Let us have this discussion.
(And if there's anything missing from the poll above, which there no doubt is, let me know. I'll just add it in under Golf.)
Anyone have any specifically favorite sports they like to play and/or watch?
Favorite Teams?
Favorite Players?
Favorite Stadiums?
Again, I am new at this and do not know entirely where to start.

Sports is pretty awesome.  Might as well mention the big sporting event of the day, the Kentucky Derby.  Because sports are for horses, too.  The actual race is in an hour or so, but they've been playing human interest stories and silly hat contests for a few hours.

BASEBALL

I saw something new for the first time while watching a baseball game. A batter came to the plate,, and  the opposing coach visited the Pitcher, and basically told him to put nothing over the plate (in the strike zone) and just walk the batter, since the Batter was doing super duper well recently.

So the Pitcher throws two balls very wide, they would normally be called Balls (as opposed to strikes), but the super duper batter swung at them anyway, taking him to 0-2 and 1 pitch away from being out.

That is VERY tempting for a pitcher. He basically put himself one pitch away from an out on purpose. All the pitcher needs to do is throw one little strike, though he was ordered to throw them all wide.

Pitcher goes for it, and just like that, the batter gets a BASE HIT.  :o

I have never seen such a brazen display of skill from a batter before. >.>

I, for one, am quite partial to lacrosse and Football(Soccer.)

Speaking of which, "Soccer" is an abbreviation of "Association Football," and was coined in the UK.

THE MORE YOU KNOW

It went;

Association Football > Assoc. > Socca > Socker > Soccer.

Miami sucks.

LeBron sucks.

Canucks suck.

I would laugh at the Canadian rioting over a sport game.

But recently, my own home city had riots over a branch of Tescos opening in their dictrict.

I've noticed that even in our 6+ years as a forum, nobody ever set up a Sports thread.

Because unless you want to make a spam thread (don't cramp my style, bro), you're not going to get much in the way of traffic. It also helps when a person that has shown a remote interest in sports in the past six years makes the thread. If someone like Ink had made this thread, I'd have been all in because I see him talk about sports at least once a week. You need to consider your own personal branding when making a topic. An overview of the sports teams in your local vicinity doesn't help me a ton. You're a comedy guy, Sgore! Stick to what you're good at. Because this topic, while being a joke, isn't one of your best. ;)

But perhaps most-importantly, sports is hard to do on an international forum like this. Even people that are from the same country are so spread out that there's no real solidarity. You may get the Europeans supporting Football, but they're only usually doing that to throw it in the face of all the Americans that love American Football (and vice versa). The odds of me finding a Phillies fan and a Flyers fan on this forum is very slim. But I bet you I can find a whole mess of people that can tell me why those teams suck and why their local professional team is better. So that's a major point of discouragement for me to talk.

Anyway, that's my view on this topic. I do love sports and all of us tend to be a bit crazy about our Philadelphia teams. But unless someone wants to talk about that specific segment of the sports world, I can't really help you. And I'd wager this is true with almost all of us here.

You have a point, but the same arguments could be made about our attempts at threads about politics or religion.  Europeans tell the Americans the US system is terrible because we don't have a viable Anarchist party, and anyone not an athiest usually gets chased out of the thread.  And yet those threads keep staggering along, and we keep making new ones.  Because what else are we going to talk about, videogames?

In conclusion:

No EXACTLY. That's why this is a terrible idea for a thread. We all know how well those threads worked out.

BRAVES

You mother****er... the Braves are good, but you know they can't hold a candle to the Phillies right now. We're crushing the league even with diminished offensive capabilities. With any luck, we'll be getting a new bat soon. And then you're all toast.

**EDIT**
Removed the picture from my quote. Really sorry about that, guys!

Pat, you make a lot of valid points in your post, but this is probably the one I'd have to take some personal issue with. I didn't mean this thread as a joke. Over a month ago, I posted it in a joking manner, clearly, and I am sorry if that came across inappropriately or in any way disrespectfully, but I sincerely wanted to get into talking about sports. It's something I truly have developed a bit of a newfound interest in, but don't really know where to start. I was never really encouraged much in the athletics department in school, and while I never had anything against the field, I never really followed it much either. I've always enjoyed the conversations on this forum, and I thought it might be fun to see how people here would approach this subject, but I definitely never meant it as a spam topic. I'm sorry if it came across that way.

Regardless of reputation, though, I don't think anyone here need be restricted by their past posts in terms of what topics they can or can't post on.
If you started a topic on Jazz, I wouldn't call you out on never showing an interest in it before. In fact, I'd probably be elated. Just no Kenny G, please. I beg of you.
(I do thank you for the comedy compliment though.)

The rest of your points are, like I said, completely valid. If it's okay with you, however, I think I'd like to leave this thread up. I'd be happy to change the opening post if you have any suggestions, perhaps to encourage a more constructive discussion, but I still feel like some good conversations could come out of this.  :)

also:
You need to consider your own personal branding when making a topic.

Things, you say?

As for sports, well, I enjoy watching them, I do root for the regional teams, but I don't much care about winning or standings are all the things it seems most people who really like sports care about. If I had to pick a sport that I like watching most though, it would be baseball.
