So, post your comments about it here.

Alright, so which one is this?
Title: Re: They Who Cannot Be Named: Assault and Battery: OOC/Discussion
Post by: Gnoll on October 25, 2010, 01:07:40 pm
It's the one where we all launch a planet at the Assault Node.

How are we going to shoot a planet at a assault node? Took a hell of a lot of firepower and WMDs from a several-hundred strong fleet to move a several billion ton asteroid at five (Earth) gravities toward the Atomna.

We. Are. Going. To. Attach. Rockets. To. Kiivck. Which. Is. Most. Likely. Smaller. Than. The. Asteroid.
AND IT WILL BE AWESOME!!!

How big is Kiivck anyway?
Title: Re: They Who Cannot Be Named: Assault and Battery: OOC/Discussion

Probably about the size of Ceres.

So hows that a improvement from firing a shard of a moon? Its impossible. How about we shoot it with my Doomsday-class impactor that can destroy a planet just as easily.

Well... O.K.

Also, this is pretty much on hold until Yuu gets back. So is The War of the Tomes. Interesting how that played out, isn't it?

Yeah... Yuu should be getting back within the next two days, though I might be off by a few days...

Shooting a planet at another planet-sized object would be a terrible, terrible idea. Rockets wouldn't move a planet, that's just ridiculous. Assuming that you COULD move an entire planet out of orbit, that would be an even more terrible idea due to the presence of gravity. (http://www.lostvectors.com/flash/voodoo_ss.html) And even if the idea of the irreversible imbalance of an entire solar system doesn't bother you (and it seems that it actually appeals to you), the Assault Node would see the planet coming before it was launched. It has an engine, doesn't it? The Assault Node has to have a method of propulsion, or otherwise it would fail to live up to its intended purpose. It obviously should have a hyperdrive, or warp drive. Launching a planet at an Assault Node would be like trying to crush a bobcat by rolling a giant snowball at it on level ground.

...which is exactly why we decided to use the missiles instead. I initially thought launching the planet would just be cooler. Thanks for the dose of reality! I needed that.

Even more reason just to use impactors.

Also, Oct, when did the mods change your name?

Been bugging me for a while so I thought I might as well post it:

The above is more or less a sketch of what the enemy commander looks like.

EDIT:

Note that I didn't add all of his limbs cause that would take an eternity.

So all my fighter-craft and destroyers are gonna get turned into slices of metal?

If the defenders don't neutralize (read: kill) the commander inside the Node, then yeah...

Then we may have a problem there.

Anyway, Yuu. Is the Assault Node far enough away from Kuuruk to use a Apocalypse-class impactor? (The one that can turn about half a planet into burning chunks of rock and make it utterly uninhabitable via lots of kinetic energy)

Rods from God (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kinetic_bombardment)?
Title: Re: They Who Cannot Be Named: Assault and Battery: OOC/Discussion

Basically.

'Cept this is the big brother of the usual kind. How this is different from other kind is simple. The usual impactors just level a several hundred kilometers, if not somewhere around a thousand or so and break the mantle in that area, making it highly volcanically and likely geologically active. I dunno, I'm not a expert in this kind of thing.

What the Apocalypse-class impactor does is that its a wee bit bigger and has more mass for extra punch, And it has about 3 to 6 smaller impactors attached to it, depending on the size of the target. What it does (At least, I think it does) is when the impactors hit, it will shatter that whole side of the planet. From my guess, all 6 rods (not counting the main one) is gonna be used against the Assault Node.

Yes.

Though I'd advise the guys to calculate the angle of impact to prevent the ship's fragments from entering Kuuruk's orbital path [kinda like how Mars fragments sometimes get into the Earth].

Sorry for double post, but damn, so those Nodes can be killed without the use of advance technology. You just need a lot of kinetic energy.

They're basically just like the Combine homeworld. One giant fortress with a warp drive and a couple of thrusters tucked in.

Wait, the Combine have a MOBILE homeworld?
Title: Re: They Who Cannot Be Named: Assault and Battery: OOC/Discussion
Post by: omegatripod on November 15, 2010, 08:17:10 pm
Yeah, like the Death Star or a Naucean Mother Sphere.

Saaaay, if the Nameless are called the "Nameless" and "Them," then those are names! Admittedly, the former makes little sense, but it's still a name! Heck, even "They Who Cannot Be Named" is a name! So why is the campaign story arc called "They Who Cannot Be Named?" You can't refer to something without naming it. Why not just call them, well, "Them?" General Robert E. Lee (if I'm not mistaken; it might have been Jackson) referred to Union forces as "those people." How about referring to "Them" as "those things?"

I'm just nitpicking here, there's no need to take notice.

I think its meant that they don't have "real" names like our races do.

But anyway, its nice to know that my races actually have something that can take down a assault node. I was beginning to think that my races' fleets would be next to useless once we get to Beyon.

Wait, the Combine have a MOBILE homeworld?

It's been almost a decade since the incident which resulted in their homeworld colliding with one of their dreadnoughts, partially glassing it and damaging its infrastructure.

We could only wonder as to what sinister modifications the Skrall have added to that battleship of a planet.  ;)

Short answer: Maybe, maybe not.

Saaaay, if the Nameless are called the "Nameless" and "Them," then those are names! Admittedly, the former makes little sense, but it's still a name!

The term "Nameless", as GW pointed out, is basically a promoted form of the adjective "nameless". A lot of people just got used to identifying them by that qualifier, so it pretty much stuck.

Oh, and it's intentionally semi-ironic on my part.  ;)

The title is actually a reference to a certain Tom Riddle, and how people are afraid to call him by name.

That and "Their" leader goes by the title of, I kid you not: One Who's Rank Is So High That Even His Rank Cannot Be Named Except By Himself. (http://www.gamingsteve.com/blab/index.php?topic=16911.msg763159#msg763159)

I'm just nitpicking here, there's no need to take notice.

Nah, it's ok.  ;)

It's pretty fun, actually.  :)

I say we nickname him the Supreme Commander or Supreme Emperor. Depends on which fits more.

Ah, that Mavor. I first thought that when I saw it.

Also, is the Nameless fighters affected at all by the AI-assisted ECM jamming of the fleet?
Title: Re: They Who Cannot Be Named: Assault and Battery: OOC/Discussion
Post by: Yuu on November 17, 2010, 02:05:20 am
Our villain of the day revolves around themes of sewing and looming.

He basically maintains command and control using those string-like things attached to his horde of minions. The jammers are doing their job perfectly, interfering with the relatively weak strings that the tier 1 mooks use to link back to their leader. This has, of course, pushed the villain into deploying his tier 2 mooks, which are basically large relay stations from the smaller ones, essentially restoring their reception.

As for what he'll do now that his node is broken...

 ;)

Also, you could probably guess by now how to efficiently take him and his entire force down, judging from how his army operates.

Take him out from a distance.

Damn, I'm likely gonna need to bring some more impactors. Now how to kill a giant glowy rip in the fabric of space-time with about a dozen tentacle blades coming out of it...

Reminds me of the Death Star at the end of it.
