Title: Red Dead Redemption
Post by: martyk on May 19, 2010, 11:00:44 am
So, I'm semi-surprised that there's no topic for this game yet.  I've heard it's name thrown around a bit for the last while, but for the most part I havn't paid it any heed.  Then all of a sudden I'm hearing that it's like, the best game in the history of the last little while, so I figure I'm going to pick it up later today.  How about you guys?  Anyone else look into the game yet?  Anyone get it yet?  I must say, it looks like great fun and the multiplayer is something I wouldn't mind trying with some of you.

I have it ordered. Amazon was giving a $10 coupon thing for other purchases for preordering.
Gotta say, those trailers and all the buzz on the internet about RDR really sold me. It sounds pretty damn awesome.

It'll be PS3 though. Don't know what you guys all have.

That's unfortunate, as I'm picking it up for the 360.

Still, we can regale eachother with our fabulous tales of Wild West hijinks.

So, are you going to play as a Paragon or a Renegade?

Thinking of snagging this for the 360.

No idea what I'll play as. To be honest, I doubt I'll play it twice unless the story is totally different or there are a whole bunch of really specific achievements for either side.
In games with bad vs. good sorta stuff, I'm mostly a good guy though. That's usually with a handful of bad things done.

I'm totally tying bitches up and putting them on the railroad tracks though. There's just some things men were born to witness.

I wonder just what sort of things you can do with the lasso, because if you can drag people, I am so doing that.  Especially if I can do it behind a train.

Gah I want it to be 5:30 so I can go home and play this!

I picked it up on the 360 with Alan Wake. So far the game seems fun. I've only put in an hour or two so far and I've found a treasure map and it's treasure, hunted down a bounty, shot and skinned my horse, and played some poker. (totally shot my horse on accident, had to reload a save.) And I've unlocked a sombrero for my avatar. I'll have to give Multi a try later in the week.

I have been seeing posters for this game on every second bus stop and tram that rolls past me lately. If I hadn't already over stuffed my gaming schedule I'd be right in to get this. I guess I should spend a weekend to try and knock off Just cause and free some space.

You may have bought the wrong version (http://kotaku.com/5543308/red-dead-redemption-ps3-versus-red-dead-redemption-xbox-360). ;)

Personally, I'll be waiting for the inevitable PC version of the game. It sounds interesting, but I'm not gonna buy a console for it.

Meh, I don't have a 360 anyway so it doesn't matter that much.
I don't mind low res. Though I'm with you on the PC thing, at least in that I'd love to wait it out. It could be like a year or more before that happens though.  :-X

Well, the difference is rather noticeable, so I wouldn't call it small details.
Also, isn't the PS3 supposed to be more powerful than the Xbox 360?

I have little choice. I'm not gonna spend 300-something euros on one game.
Though I guess with LittleBigPlanet 2 coming up... >_>

I've only done 3 or 4 story missions so far. Herding cattle FTW! I've been having more fun doing hunting and talking to strangers. I think i need to finish the ranch mission string so I can get my lasso. I need to bring in some of these bounties alive.

Is anyone else having problems with killing their horse(s)? Sometimes when enemies and wild animal get too close it's real easy to shoot your horse in the back of the head. Also I killed another horse buy running it too fast. Now I kinda wanna trying running full speed shooting the horse in the back of the head right before I run off a cliff.  :D

Having fun with the game, it's a real time eater.

I think I'm up to 15 hours on this game, and about 30% complete (Been screwing around a lot)
I went to the midnight launch of it with my friends.

Great game, just finished the 1st act, and onto the 2nd "island"
I just got my buffalo rifle, and man does that thing rock! Was a pain to get, that involved killing 2 cougars with a knife  :o

Also, I think I'm like lvl 7 or 8 online, but haven't played much of that. It's not as crazy as I thought it would be.
Only a few people have been going all Rambo in free roam. We took out a few gang hideouts with some random people who just happen to be there.

Don't think it will last, but the multi-player was a lot of fun.

Hit me up if you want to play online. Gamertag is: Son of Fink

Yeah you better be sure you got plenty of deadeye you will need all the time you can get off every shot you can. Just pray you haven't accidently left the weapon on lasso. I did that when trying to bring down some highway men (It didn't end well).

Fun little glitch: After (or maybe during? Yeah, it's definitely during. I think) one of the missions with Irish (I'm thinking it's the one where you find shaky), there's a part where you hop onto a wagon and ride with Irish. For me, the wagon shot straight up. Just...woosh! Up, up, and away. Horses too. Failed the mission and restarted at that same part b/c apparently the wagon was destroyed. Or maybe Irish died. Hm. One of those.

Okay, odd question: how much actual nudity would you say is in the game? and is it necessary to see it? I have a younger brother, and I don't want us to get it if there is, cause I don't like the chance of him stumbling on it.

I would not let your younger brother play this game.

That being said, the only nudity I have seen in the game is someones butt in a cut scene.
However, the person in question was hung, naked from a barn roof.

Not a pretty scene.

This whole game is messed up. I would not let a kid play it, but thats me.

(also, I'm more then half way through the game, and have not seen any female nudity... if thats all that is bothering you)

Yeah there is much worse stuff than barely dressed people. While u don't see the animal being cut up if you skin it you do See blood spurting up. Also there are things like guys stabbing women, gambling, and plenty of gun play.

Gratuitous violence is ok as long as nobody says any naughty words.

Having said that lots of people say naughty words. This game is not for kids.

I'm loving the full Texas hold'em mini game. I haven't tried the black jack or anything else yet though. I had a great game on my 1st play of it it was down to me and one other guy he was in front I ended up getting 2 pair kings of 3s so started betting but he wasn't backing down ended up having to go all in. Turns out he had a 2 pair as well Kings over Jacks. I swore so hard at the TV but it was fun.

Play Liar's Dice if you know probability well. I don't think I've ever lost a game playing that stuff, it's so dirt easy to win. Hardly ever lose a single die. Just wish there were Liar's Dice with high stakes, like the 200 dollar one. Sigh, now they're only 20 dollars. Should've taken advantage...

The law of the west is so oddly enforced, with a maximum honor rating, you really can get away anything short of murder. I just hogtied, and stole the ammo of, the whole saloon clientele of the Armadillo Saloon and no one went running to the sheriff.
Title: Re: Red Dead Redemption
Post by: Cobra on May 31, 2010, 11:44:06 pm
I think it's a not so much an enforcement issue as it is a case that everyone respected you so much that they had no problem letting you tie them up and take their ammo they didn't dob you in so the sherrif never knew and there for had know reason to come arrest you.

Having said that inside the Armadillo Saloon on the top floor near your room is a great place to have a stand off against the the law. They only come in through to saloon doors on the floor unless you move to far away from your room they come in through the 2nd floor entrance as well. You can take out everyone easy. If you let them come inside a bit before blowing them away you can restock on the ammo they drop no problem.

I totally agree with you, gungnir. I wish there was a cheat or something to make Jack back into John. I'm completing a lot of the stranger missions that i ignored when i was playing the campaign and it loses something when Jack is completing his father's quests without even the admission that he's not the same guy.

The way it happened for me is that I shot the mexican president and bill pulled a gun on me and the other mexican guy, so the mexican shot bill dead. I think Bill has to die.

EDIT: I always just kill the horse thieves. i don't want to have to wait 2 or 3 minutes for another one to spawn.

Kill the horse thieves, definitely. If they fall of and live, I hogtie them and use a firebottle to burn them alive. They deserve the pain.

Similarly- Those damsels-in-distress that are actually just a way to lure you into a trap of 4 guys who jump out from behind a stagecoach with the intention of killing you. Method here is to dispatch (slay with bullets) the guys with guns, hogtie the wench, toss her in the middle of the road, then run her over with the stagecoach.

Yup.

I've gotten to the point where if I ever see a lone guy standing around who utters the words "Can you help a fella out?", I immediatley put a bullet between his eyes.

I have never lost honour doing so.

I get off my horse as soon as I see them I it means they can't get very far while John gets back to his feet. I'm already standing so I rope them before they make 3 meters.

I have killed Dutch or more accurately as you know he killed himself. I'm not living the shiny happy life of bonding with my son and having a happy home, it does not bode well for a happy ending of the game.

Finally beat Red Dead, and the ending is some BS! So lame.

Oh, here's a mistake I made after I thought I had beaten the game that I'm posting here as a heads up to anyone else who may have done the same thing.

When you play as Jack, head over to the blackwater trainstation and talk to the agent there. I didn't do this, so I ended up thinking the game had less resolution than it actually did.

Yeah I already did that.

I just saw the strangest random encounter...

2 asian looking dudes near a tent and a whole bunch of TNT. One says, 'One little spark and we go BOOM!' (or something like that.) Then they blew up. Large bang. Bodies go flying.

I just saw that same event while i was bear hunting! 2 dudes (these guys were white) in a random spot in the woods, carrying dynamite over to a table. One of them says to the other, "one more load and we can go home" I walked to a safe distance so i could shoot the dynamite and watch it blow up, and as i was walking away, they blew up. BAM! cuff links and asscheeks all over the place.

First off, holy cow it's 762! long time no see.

2nd, I love and hate the glitch that keeps spawning bears. Usually if i find one bear, there is a 2nd one lurking near by, but every now and then they keep spawning. I look around, thinking it's safe to skin a bear, then I hear a roar in the background and I can't skin fast enough. Once I had 8 skinned bear bodies around me before I decided to run away, not wanting to press my luck. Another time I died, after being chased down by three bears. Best and worst glitch ever.

So that's why bears are the number 1 threat to America.

That's a glitch? I thought that there was some kinda insidious bear plot to kill me.

Yeah I finished the game, the ending was pretty much as to be expected.

Has anyone else been having really ridiculously bad connection problems? I've been trying since the game came out, and I've only been able to get one good connection. I've forwarded ports, unplugged the router and all that crap that they suggest, but it still won't work. I think a part of the problem is that I can't find the UPnP setting on my linksys WRT54G. It's real frustrating when half the reason I bought the game is for multiplayer, and after a month they still haven't gotten it to work.

EDIT: just for further information, the internet is hooked up to a modem, that goes into the linksys wireless router, then we have a cable that runs downstairs and into another router that handles my xbox and my dad's computer. Does anyone have suggestions?

EDIT:Ok, so I was able to get online for a couple hours yesterday by unplugging everything and plugging it back in. I didn't have any problems at all for a while, then all of a sudden the internet **** the bed. The internet for the whole house, for a couple of hours. I tried again today, but the NAT was set back to moderate. Is there any more permanent solution than just unplugging everything all the time?

Necrobump double post  :o

Does anybody want to get a free roam game going? Please god tell me yes, i've been having a lot of fun with my friend online but it sucks with just the two of us. And playing with other people is completely out of the question. I entered the "friendly" game mode, thinking it would be a bunch of like-minded people who wanted to do gang hide-outs, and those savages found a way to suck all the fun out.

So, my plea is that there are a couple people on this board willing to play some 360 RDR with me  ;D

EDIT: Gamertag is rook218 and i'm free most of the day tomorrow and all day every day thereafter.
