Title: Nintendo 3DS
Post by: gec05 on March 23, 2010, 06:25:15 pm
http://kotaku.com/5499697/nintendo-announces-new-hardware-the-nintendo-3ds (http://kotaku.com/5499697/nintendo-announces-new-hardware-the-nintendo-3ds)

Nintendo announced that they will be introducing yet another DS iteration, making it their 5th generation model of the DS.

The main feature to the 3DS will be a new 3D effect, requiring no special 3D glasses. I can assume this is accomplished my an accelerometer, but I guess Nintendo won't want to mention that yet, being that it sounds a lot like an iPhone. It will be going on sale between April 2010 (JP) and March 2011 (US)

It is backwards compatible with both DS and DSi games. There are also other "features" rumored to be in it as well.

-3D Joystick
-Built in Force Feedback (rumble)
-Improved wireless speed and battery life.
-Slightly smaller than the upcoming DSi XL, but larger than DSi

Many speculate that after with DSi and DSi XL, it's worth more to upgrade to this than any of the two DSi models. So if you have yet to or are planning on buying any DSi... don't! I'm glad I haven't. But with such features, this may even be more expensive than what the DSi XL first sold for. I also find it very unusual for Nintendo to be going through handheld lifecycles this fast. Though in a market where the iPhone is quickly rising as the new portable gaming device, Nintendo doesn't want to lose it edge on this market. And they are viciously holding their turf after being perched undisturbed until now.

Your thoughts.

Oh, and a list of release titles.

from what i've seen on this, it's a next generation handheld rather then just another ds upgrade.

Nice, I'll be able to buy it in October then, hope it wont be region locked like the DSi games. :S

what does that 3d stuff do for gameplay exactly? sounds kinda gimmicky >>

Post by: GroxGlitch on March 24, 2010, 11:01:07 am
Yeah, this is looking like milking. I'd rather have a decent system than fancy 3D graphics.
Title: Re: Nintendo 3DS
Post by: gec05 on March 24, 2010, 01:27:20 pm
Nintendo doesn't want to admit it yet, but I think it's just a fancy ruse to call it an accelerometer. And that can potentially have more possibilities than just 3D games.

I'm pretty sure if Nintendo can take the Wii Motion Plus and stick it in the 3DS, it would be a no brainer to accomplish what the iPhone can do.

To take that even further, I think Nintendo should also use multi-touch and advanced pressure sensitivity to the touch screen. And make both screens touch sensitive.

Oh god, I wish they would just stop. It's like nintendo has a bag full of new gimmicks and they reach in and grab one or two at random.

Title: Re: Nintendo 3DS
Post by: gec05 on March 24, 2010, 07:57:12 pm
I think it's too soon though. They should have waited a little longer.
Title: Re: Nintendo 3DS
Post by: PatMan33 on March 24, 2010, 08:10:26 pm
It's not too soon. The 3DS is a new system.

Nintendo launched the DS line in 2004 so that's about six years between generations. And just looking at the numbers quickly... Game & Watch was in 1983 followed by Game Boy in 1989 (six years again) which was then succeeded by the Game Boy Color in 1998 (nine years) and then we saw the Game Boy Advance in 2001 (three years) which leads us back to the DS in 2004 (three years). I'd say it's about on the mark for a new piece of hardware. What throws a wrench in the works is how visible the DS was/is and how many they managed to sell in such a short span of time.

But if Nintendo believes they've got something solid and worthy of a new line of hardware (and not just a revision), I'll trust them. They usually don't make missteps in this realm. The Virtual Boy counts as one and that took place in 1995 which is roughly ten years after Nintendo really became well-known worldwide. So yeah, they are probably due for a mistake, but we'll have to wait and see on that one.

Post by: dndfreak on March 24, 2010, 11:05:27 pm
I wonder if they'll tack on free nintendo points like when they made the DSi.

I think it's a little soon only because the DSi exclusives still haven't really gotten a chance to thrive yet.  Adding new requirements will only make it longer before we see any games that make use of it.

Most of this should actually be in the 3DS topic.

Actually, some of those pictures are a good testimony to the 3DS' graphical capabilities. Such as the MGS and RE pictures, they almost look like next-gen graphics.

Post by: Pixxel on March 18, 2011, 02:14:12 am
I tried the 3DS while I was still in Tokyo.

As many people has said, the 3D feature is something you will only have turned on for the first few hours before getting sick of it.
It's nothing special to be honest, but that doesn't make the 3DS completely useless since the graphics can compete with that
of the Gamecube and the list of upcoming titles on the platform is great.
I would strongly recommend "Battle of Giants: Dinosaur Strike" as your first 3DS game.
It's an action-RPG title were you play as several dinosaurs while getting loot, equipment and level up.

Except the great graphics and all the upcoming titles there's loads of new great features for it.  ;D

Now to wait for the price tag to drop.  ::)

Tomorrow (Sunday) Toys R Us is doing a "buy one 3DS game, get another 50% off", sale. Definitely hit it up even if you don't have a 3DS. The games should still work in a few months!

Be certain to pick up Pilotwings, it's good fun. I'd avoid Steel Diver if you can help it, it's just not worth it.

Now, I've been told that Ridge Racer is quite spectacular to look at but I don't know much on the gameplay. Also, if it's your thing, get Nintendogs +Cats.

If you've got a smartphone that runs Android, I remember reading about an app that contains the AR cards.
After some searching it appears it's been removed, but apparently there are some similar apps (https://market.android.com/search?q=3ds+ar+cards). Since I have neither a smartphone nor a 3DS I have no idea how well this works, but it's worth a shot.

Also, random thought: If it works with a phone display, maybe you can find images of the cards online and print them yourself. I have no idea if that actually works though.

EDIT: Or you could try this (http://kotaku.com/#!5787787/playing-3ds-augmented+reality-games-with-a-whiteboard).

I'm actually quite happy with it. Pretty fricken' amazing. But I'd still say it's not good for anyone to buy it now. I realize a newer, and perhaps, cheaper model will come out for it. But that may not come until after the holidays. So I can feel better about getting a newer model later on being that I had quite some time to recover from this purchase.

Flipnote was a free animation program for the DSi, basically turned into the DS version of youtube.  I used to do a lot with it, but eventually my DS crapped out and nintendo wanted me to pay 70 bucks plus shipping for them to fix it, so that never happened and I've been using my iPhone to kill time ever since.

So I ended up getting one of these, for anyone interested in knowing Flipnote IS scheduled to make a 3DS return in the form of 'Flipnote Memo', not much is known otherwise but as far as rumor mills go it's supposedly all the same functionality but they're dropping Hatena, either using their own service for hosting or using direct-to-youtube.

Also, Street Fighter IV is decidedly the best you can get for portable gaming in the genre.  Just sayin'.

Depends on pricing. If NES games are valued at five dollars like they are on the Wii store, that's 50 bucks right there. And I would imagine GBA titles will be at least five bucks, so maybe seven. It's a good deal as long as you like playing older games.

The life increases when you effectively turn off everything you dont need the 3D can be often left off it can be a little uncomfitable trying to hold the screen at the right angle to get the effect for extended periods of time. Also turn off the wireless especially if you are just setting at home you arent going to collect any spot passes sitting in your room. If you take the train anywhere sure put it on for that other than that you can get a little bit more out of your battery.

I am not really in it for the 3D aspect of the console but I do like bigger screens, but if it becomes a hassle to maneuver the screen due to size it becomes a detriment to me (cough* big smart phones *cough). What games have you played that you felt made the system worth it?

I'm thinking like, HM/Runefactory (personal preference, like these significantly more than games like Animal Crossing), Pokemon and Luigi's Mansion. I know of no other games for the system that peak my interest/heard were good.

Haven't been into Harvest Moon for a while now but I went a picked up Rune Factory 4 because I heard it more or less is the evolution of Harvest Moon.

So... I have Rune Factory 4. What do I do... I've been farming but I am sure there's other stuff. And that other stuff is why I bought it. >_>

Also does it have multiplayer? Anyone here have it?
Title: Re: Nintendo 3DS
Post by: Didero on December 18, 2013, 12:41:05 am
I've played a Rune Factory on my DS for a bit a while ago, and there you could wander around the village, and at the edges there would be areas with monsters, which you could fight. There may also have been a dungeon somewhere, but I don't really recall all that well.
Though I don't know about Rune Factory 4.
Title: Re: Nintendo 3DS
Post by: Celdur on December 18, 2013, 04:28:26 pm
Rune factory has gone through a bit of a transition. A lot more than harvest moon anyway.
The first game was really unforgiving and it was about EXTREME DUNGEON FARMING for the most part, which was kind of a tedious and unforgiving gameplay mechanic to completely rely on.
I haven't played the 2nd game but I hear it toned down a lot of the tedious dungeon grinding and also gave a bigger focus on town relations.
Now, I have played the 3rd game, and its a pretty carefree chill waifu simulator where you do simple farming, simple dungeoneering, simple animal raising stuff and you see where I'm going with this.

So yeah, 3 was really easy but i still found it pretty enjoyable as long as it lasted, and it kinda is a half sim game half dating sim game. So i guess that makes it a dating sim sim?
What I heard about 4 was that they would add more depth to some of the things you could do, and add some town management and other stuff to invest time in, like alchemy and stuff.
Also a whole new set of waifus or husbandos to marry, woo!
It really isn't for everyone, but it does what it wants to pretty well.
Title: Re: Nintendo 3DS
Post by: PatMan33 on December 18, 2013, 08:09:30 pm
So far I'm liking it. It seems very much like Harvest Moon with all the stuff they never actually felt like putting in an actual Harvest Moon game. And this is wonderful. I'm playing as a gurrrrrrl. Gonna scissor erryone.

Pat what was your verdict on Rune Factory?

My favorite HM is its a wonderful life on GC due to story progression/family growth/town evolution; how does RF4 compare to AWOL? Similar enough? Hands down better? Different but better?
Title: Re: Nintendo 3DS
Post by: PatMan33 on March 31, 2014, 02:55:33 pm
I have not gotten too far into Rune Factory, actually. There isn't as big an emphasis on farming so I really have no idea what to do and the game doesn't do a good job of giving me direction. I'm just kinda floundering around my small farm and can't find much else to do that seems important.

A Wonderful Life was a really fun one, though I thought it kinda got boring toward the end. If you're looking for an experience more in line with HM and HM64, check out Magical Melody. Of all the newer HM games I've played, MM is the closest to improving upon the original formula without adding a ton of new features that detract from the farming.
Title: Re: Nintendo 3DS
Post by: eropS on May 13, 2014, 06:32:35 pm
So I meandered around to buying rune factory 4.

This game is crack cocaine. I'm having a blast figuring out all the little crafting systems, the first month has been fun, though I'm level 52 and feel like I'm farther in the story than the game is, if that makes sense.

Uhhh... kind of pissed now though, cause I'm watching credits and it's not even mid way through the first summer. I hope there's some end game or something...

Title: Re: Nintendo 3DS
Post by: Slinky on May 15, 2014, 06:41:27 pm
I checked out the demo. Basically, you play face raiders to catch Denpa men and build up a party of them to use in a pretty generic dungeon crawl. It's okay but it's a little boring and the art style bugs me...

Oh, and I'm really interested in Bravely Default.
Title: Re: Nintendo 3DS
Post by: PatMan33 on May 15, 2014, 07:52:49 pm
Bravely Default is a good game.

But don't go into it expecting a classic JRPG experience. It is still horrendously linear like most modern JRPGs, the story is really stupid, and the game's much-lauded mechanics fall apart after level 25 because of no enemy variety, no enemy tactics, and the Monk class is pretty unbalanced.

It's a good game and worth getting. But I've played the hell out of it, maxed out my characters, and beat the story and the game is okay. But it is not the next big thing like some people have said. It's a step back on the path of good JRPGs, but it still suffers from modern problems like an over-reliance on an uninteresting story, linear story and map progression, and half-baked mechanics.

It's definitely worth playing, but some people have a severe misconception about when JRPGs got bad. And because of that they call this game great. :P

You will not regret playing it, I sure don't. But you will eventually see the game's flaws very clearly.

Yeah, I dunno...I mean, I'm not a huge JRPG fan to begin with? I haven't played many, but everyone seems to like FF7 and I've played it a little and I simply can't get into it. It's so...mucky, I dunno. Everything is kinda bogged down in stats and random encounters (Jesus God I hate random encounters) and it just didn't appeal to me so much. I don't know. Maybe I'm a spoiled Skyrim brat.

Hey people, I have found a great opportunity from my job. If you know some one who wants a 3DS, Radioshack is currently clearing out their stock of in store 3DS's. They are letting them go for just 99 bucks. Call your local store and see if they have any collecting dust in the back room. Ask if it is Catalogue number 2602081, as that is the one on clearance.

All of the good DS games. :B

But see if you can track down Kirby Triple Deluxe (it's new and a bit difficult to find), A Link Between Worlds, Etrian Odyssey IV (if you like JRPGs)... there's lots of good games. :D

Or if you can't find it you can download pretty much any game through the eshop.

It's almost tooooo convenient.

I'd recommend Link, Pokeman, and I like Rune Factory if you enjoy some harvest moon/hacknslash

If anyone was looking at Shovel Knight, the DS version is fabulous. It's incredible fun and man the soundtrack is great!

Grab it on the eShop. It's also on the Wii U, though it works better as a portable game. Plus the 3D looks pretty sharp.

**IMPORTANT EDIT**
Hey good timing on this one. I just read that the eShop is having troubles processing payments. Some are reporting the shop was taken down a few minutes ago. Either way, wait for a resolution on this before you spend any money on Nintendo's eShop.

Fantastic game.  Just all around great.

Currently running through a second playthrough on the harder difficulty you unlock.  Much more punishing as there are half as many checkpoints and enemies do double damage.

Fire emblem

Do I suck or is there some trick I'm missing?  I always feel like im on my backfoot with these fights and basically have to pray for lucky two people attacks to not lose. I swear this **** is harder than XCOM and forces you to play with a level of defensiveness that borders on boring and gimmicky.

Fire Emblem Awakening is ezpz. I'm not sure how you could mess it up. Just jam a knight and a pegasus rider into a high-speed murderblob.

Unless you're trying to play the optional missions in the wrong order, those don't scale at all.
Title: Re: Nintendo 3DS
Post by: eropS on December 21, 2014, 10:54:41 am
Optional missions?

I'm on Chapter 5, and war were declared.

The knight is only one guy, pegasus girl has 18 hp and does 5gmd. Cavalry riders are also pretty weak if not the knight. When individual ax and sword men can one shot Chrom, or or the other 3/4 of my party, it's pretty tough.

Title: Re: Nintendo 3DS
Post by: /lurk on December 21, 2014, 02:59:13 pm
Oh well. The beginning is slightly more difficult, but pairing people up is still a huge advantage. Only use the knight as backup in a pair or he'll soak up experience that better units should be getting.
Title: Re: Nintendo 3DS
Post by: eropS on December 21, 2014, 05:05:21 pm
I'm still wary of the pair up since it feels like I kind of lose a character...

And to ended up lowering the difficulty from Hard to Normal but changing it from Casual to Classic.

I feel like I cheated the game just got so much easier...plus being able to farm Risen for way cheaper is nice

FIRST GAME OF THE YEAR 2015: Crimson Shroud.

It came out in 2012 but I just got it in the new year eshop sale.

Probably the next two game of the years will be Weapon Shop de Omasse and Liberation Maiden that I got at the same time but haven't started yet.

Those games are all really fun! There's a fourth one in that series called Aero Porter. It is also different and fun.

Liberation Maiden is going to BLOW YOUR SOCKS OFF if you like Star Fox and need that itch scratched. And Weapon Shop is a crapload of fun, though not what I expected at all.

Oddly enough, Crimson Shroud was my least favorite of the four, but it is still very good.

If you don't have one yet, I hear regular 3ds prices are dropping because of this.

Title: Re: Nintendo 3DS
Post by: PatMan33 on January 30, 2015, 07:27:32 pm
I've been playing this a fair amount over the last day. First impressions are positive. The gameplay is build around pretty cool maps that are navigated with steam in a turn-based format.

Basically, each character has steam, basically just a form of currency, and gains it back each turn. Steam can be spent to move such that one steam equates to moving one square in any direction. It is worth noting that the movement is completely free and there is nuance to where you can stand within any given square allowing for some cool opportunities.

Pressing the left shoulder button fires a character's weapon, which is always available and is aimed by manipulating the game's camera. Attacking costs steam and so the player needs to consider their moves carefully. The closer you are from your point of origin, the more steam you are spending. But if you backtrack and move closer to your point of origin, you will get the spent steam back. Because of this the game could be considered forgiving, but it's a nice way to speed up the gameplay.

You can control multiple characters, each with their own special abilities. Some characters are able to use the Overwatch ability, which allows them to attack during the opponent's movement turn if an enemy crosses their line of sight. Anyone that has played X-COM knows what this is. And this game is very much like that great game series, though with its own flavor and some neat ideas.

I love that the developers have given the player complete control over aiming. There is no rock, paper, scissors mechanic working behind the scenes to determine if you will hit. If you aim well, you will hit. If you mess up your aim, you will miss. This also means that advanced players can set up some really awesome shots and scenarios. I see potential for lots of replay value here.

Definitely get the demo for this game if you have a 3DS. It's free and offers 30 plays. The game comes out on the 13th of March, so a month and change. The demo is a ton of fun and offers a couple characters to try out, as well as a good variety of missions. But it is still limited and I can't wait for the full game.

Want. ;D

Got two from the Netherlands today! Filled in Groningen and Overijssel!! Also got Iowa and Missouri.

Plus two new Street Pass games came out today: Ultimate Angler and Battleground Z. One is a fishing game and the other is a Zombie game and both are a lot of fun so far! Really loving Street Pass and glad it is getting better. Anyone else ever play these? They are incredibly unique and nobody else even has anything close.

Finally picked up that F2P Pokemon game. Also got Crashmo, which is another one of those "it's free but you can buy the parts of the game you want" sort of model. I like the Pushmo games so Crashmo is just more fun for me!

But the real gem was this demo I got on the eShop for Japanese Rail Sim 3D. It's this really neat train simulator (pretty basic sim) but it gives you all this cool trivia and pictures and general info about the Japanese suburbs you are driving through. Very relaxing and fun! Will buy the full version when I can and I can't wait for more of these!!

Was also looking at A-Train, but it seems awfully expensive at 30 bucks. Will need to read more reviews on that one first.

Been playing Pokemon Rumble World Ultimate Alliance Fighters a bit and it's pretty fun.

I may even spend money despite the game being free. They've got a cool model whereby you can only buy a max of 3,000 diamonds (the game's premium currency) over the entire span of the game. They limit how much you can spend to about 30 bucks total. I really like this model because it still allows people to play for free if they want, but if you do wish to put some cash down you aren't throwing your money into a bottomless pit.

Nintendo has been doing neat things with their F2P experiments, or "free to start" as they are calling them now. Rusty's Real Deal Baseball (http://www.gamingsteve.com/blab/index.php?topic=18726.msg881356#msg881356) was an excellent game with rewarding, deep mechanics. And their payment model was unique and fun; it even managed to integrate itself into the game's story. Their tweaks and experiments seem to have paid off because the model for Pokemon Rumble World Ultimate Alliance Fighters Evangelion Paku Paku III is a winner. Can recommend.

And I hope this is the way F2P or F2S goes in the future. Other companies could learn from these much less offensive methods of microtransactions.

More on Pokemon Rumble.

Been playing about two weeks and finally started to get bored today because the unlock progression began slowing down to a crawl. So I spent about $1.50 to get a couple hundred diamonds and the game has blown wide open again, plus I have diamonds to spare! Pretty neat!

*shrug*

The spending limit is 30 bucks, which is the cost of an inexpensive game. When I can budget a bit more for games I'll pick up the rest of the diamonds and unlock the rest of the higher-tier levels. I really like the fundamentals of the game, but hopefully they release another version with more features someday. Would love to have the ability to actually train Pokemon and catch them properly.

I liked the game a lot too just became a low priority to play so didn't see the need to spend money. I hear previous instalments in the series allow for evolving of Pokemon and the like.

Did you play the pokemon match 3 freemium game? I thought that was pretty good as well. Some of the puzzles in that will make you lose hair.

Skipped it because I already had Pokemon Trozei or whatever it's called. But that game is really really easy.

The basic levels are cake walk the special levels where you can unlock legendary trios and full evolutions of the starters those can be real tough especially the blaziken level.

If you play shuffle prepare to to suffer a long time even if you get a good enough score to beat the level the catch rate on blaziken is terrible.

3DS XL has been acting funny and slowing down so I transferred it over to the 2DS. So this is the third transfer I've done with this account. Pretty decent system, no issues.

And I love that I can use the 2DS more now. It's an excellent system and very comfortable.

I really enjoy the demos for Japanese Rail Sim 3D on the eShop. So far they have Journey in Suburbs #1 and Journey to Kyoto.

They are really slow and simple, but I really like the pacing and all the cool facts you can learn along the way. It's a weird one, but neat! Hope to buy them both someday.

Nowadays the most use I get out of my 3DS is using it as a controller when playing Smash 4 on campus. I've hit a snag where I've actually run out of space on the 2 gig sd card in it and can't update smash anymore, but fortunately the wiiu we're playing on has never touched the internets either so no issues there. However, I can't play for glory on my 3ds at home any more so can't really get practice in.

The opponents I have on campus are mostly super casual anyways so I'm actually thinking it's not worth picking up a new card. I don't actually need the practice. The only thing is that if I ever have friends wanting to play over wfc, I'll need a current version of the game.

Pulled the lever on a game I've been watching in the eShop for a while now.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OhiWvvO_QE0
A-Train: City Simulator

I have no regrets whatsoever, this game is very very good. The tutorials are long (hours) but they do a great job setting you up and the game has a ton of depth and is very enjoyable. If you like this type of game, definitely consider it. It's got tons of features and options to tweak around and the presentation is nice! The trailers don't show much of the gameplay unfortunately and opt to show the "3D" visuals instead. But make no mistake, the game is a isometric transportation simulator.

Title: Re: Nintendo 3DS
Post by: PatMan33 on October 23, 2015, 08:32:02 pm
Nah it's more like Transport Tycoon (semi-lite). You have limited building placement in normal modes and the idea is to grow cities and towns by connecting them with rail and other types of transport. There is an exhaustive amount of control over the vehicles in game. For instance you can control a train's arrival and departures down to the minute, operating hours, off hours (where you can have them run OTHER types of cargo), routes, cargo types, and even things like the sound they make when they arrive at a station. You've got to be able to build up depots and keep them stocked to encourage growth. It's very detailed and a slow kind of game. You are building long-term strategies.

They also have a construction mode once you complete the tutorials that allows more freedom is just building things.

Sadly there's almost no video of this game out there.

Haven't touched my 3DS in a long time. After finishing Mario 3D Land and getting bored of Animal Crossing I just haven't found anything I really wanted to play. Any recommendations? Especially stuff that's not just console ports, like MGS3 or Xenoblade, which I think work better as console games anyway.
Title: Re: Nintendo 3DS

Close your eyes and spin around. There's a crapload of games out there that are worth playing on the 3DS.

Hit the eShop and download some demos. They've gotten a lot better about putting out game demos.

That said, get TriForce Heroes. It's a blast! And I want friends to play with. :D
Title: Re: Nintendo 3DS
Post by: Slinky on October 30, 2015, 11:28:04 am
Triforce Heroes is 3DS only right? So I guess I'll look into that.

I sort of generally dislike portable gaming so if there are good 3DS games that also exist on console or PC (like, say, Shovel Knight), I tend to not get the portable version. But if there are really good 3DS exclusives I like to try to get into them. Unless it's only 3DS/WiiU because I don't have a WiiU so I have to play the 3DS ones then.

But cool, Triforce Heroes! And I'll check out the eshop as well. Are there any sort of hidden gems that I might not see/have heard about?
Title: Re: Nintendo 3DS
Post by: PatMan33 on October 30, 2015, 11:43:37 am
Yeah there's a bunch. I just transferred my system over and had to transfer the SD card as well. Had almost 14 gigs of (mostly great) eShop games on there.

A few you may want to look into:

A-Train 3D City Simulator (erops and I were just discussing this game above, check that conversation out)
Pushmo
Crashmo
Stretchmo
Mario vs Donkey Kong Tipping Stars
BoxBoy!
Harmoknight
Sky Peace (99 cents, you can't not get it)
Steel Empire (remake, a bit pricey but very worth it)
Gunman Clive
Gunman Clive 2
SteamWorld Dig A Fistful of Dirt (AWESOME)
Steel Diver Sub Wars (underwater Star Fox with multiplayer, F2P, not broken)
Kirby Fighters Deluxe (if you have friends to play with, supports download play)
Dillon's Rolling Western

And another thing to check out are the SEGA 3D Classics. They're remastered version of older SEGA games and they are very well done. They also look great on the 3DS. I have Sonic, Sonic 2, Space Harrier, After Burner II, Ecco the Dolphin, and Fantasy Zone. Nintendo has also contributed some of their own games to the 3D Classics series. The two I have are Kirby's Adventure and Kid Icarus.

These remakes are excellent.

Mildly interesting video on hardware differences. I like this guy!

The Hyrule Edition seems to have a better screen than any of the n3DS models yet. However the 2nd wave Majora's Mask edition n3DS systems have a very good screen as well, with the first-run MM systems having the "worst" of the bunch.

This is a totally hypothetical question but does DSiWare still exist? Like if I were to go buy a DSi right now could I download games to it? Also is WiiWare on the original Wii still up and available to buy games from?

If these are up, are there any DSi/WiiWare games that didn't get ported to 3DS/WiiU and will probably be lost forever that I should be trying to pick up?

Title: Re: Nintendo 3DS
Post by: Slinky on February 12, 2016, 01:25:28 pm
It just sort of freaks me out when games are only available through download because unlike physical copies of stuff, once the system goes down the game disappears forever with it. I guess that's what people like the Internet Archive are working against.
Title: Re: Nintendo 3DS
Post by: dndfreak on February 13, 2016, 04:06:01 am
I just checked the DSi shop and there's a discontinuation of service on the frontpage as of 2/27/14. Basically it says that WFC functions of games and such have been discontinued, but shops and other payment-based services are unaffected.

However, what I want to point out is that the old DSi/Wii shops are not tied to an account, just to the device itself, which means the only way to keep purchases is with a full device transfer.

There's a game on my reccomended items frontpage which was released 1/28/16, so the shop definitely still works. Just, a lot of multiplayer stuff won't be multiplayer anymore.
Title: Re: Nintendo 3DS
Post by: PatMan33 on February 13, 2016, 09:40:57 am
Yes that is correct.

A lot of people have a misconception that the service closure meant that the actual storefronts were going down as well, which is not the case.

Seems kind of pointless.

Not that I disagree with you. But for what it's worth they want people to be together for their multiplayer experiences. They haven't changed that tack since the GameCube was around and a Yamauchi ran the company. This has been pretty clear for many cycles now.

Then again, you can get that on the Wii U version. And maybe they'll patch it in later.

They've remade a lot of classic Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest on the DS systems (easily ten games between these two). Bravely Default is a solid choice, though depending on who you ask (me) there are some stupid problems - the sequel is better. Radiant Historia is a wild ride if you like time travel weeaboo ****. Also Legend of Legacy or really any Atlus game. Etrian Odyssey if you hate yourself. Fire Emblem for the tactician in you! Even old Advance Wars games. Golden Sun! Kingdom Hearts too! Oh man tons of choices.

"hurr durr switch is a handheld they're ending ds support"

The 3D on the n3DS is way better than on the original 3Ds so I'm not sure about the wisdom of taking it out, though.
Title: Re: Nintendo 3DS
Post by: PatMan33 on April 28, 2017, 06:25:44 am
The wisdom is that the n3DS XL is too expensive and the new 2DS is probably still 50 bucks more than it should be. Especially when the Switch is only 100 bucks more. Plus, when you put the new and old 2DS and side-by-side, the original 2DS looks like a toy, which could hurt sales. The new device looks sexier and more like a "device", which may lend itself to better sales of a cheaper, hopefully noncompeting device. And it is a less-expensive version of their "exclusive" new 3DS hardware, now for the 2DS/budget? crowd.

I dunno, that's my guess.

Half-step consoles, maine. Their a little silly. Works better for handhelds as long as they aren't 200 bucks. :U

Title: Re: Nintendo 3DS
Post by: PatMan33 on April 29, 2017, 12:59:57 pm
If that is the question, the answer is mostly disappointing. There were a couple games that needed n3DS hardware but it never panned out to be a huge library of "must have" games. It looks like they'll be supporting the DS line for a while longer yet, so the jump to "new" may be required if you want the new Pikmin game and whatever else they're working on.
