Title: Is this game still ****?
Post by: Veraal on March 19, 2010, 06:31:02 am
I remember buying it and then uninstalling it.

Has it improved or something since release?
Any mods or something?

There's an expansion that lets you create limited space missions.
Apart from that, no real improvement and frankly Maxis seems to have abandoned it so I wouldn't bother.

Yeah, even with mods, you've pretty much done everything there is to do within... about 10 hours of play, I'd say. Most of that being grinding during the Space Stage to be able to do the rest of it. The only thing its still got going for it is the editors. Some mods unlock things like Grox parts, and there was an official free expansion for asymmetry. Other than that, its pretty much what you remember.

The editors are still fun though. GA is pretty neat in that you can use your creations like movie props and you can tell a story through episodes and such.

Ah, and even that is heavily restricted. I had planned an adventure on it when
I had first read about it, to have a squad of Photos fighting through a zombie-infested base, to reach a hangar with a shuttle to escape. Too bad I found out that air vehicles can't land, trying to make a building with inside space is absolutly backbreaking work, and the AI is completely useless, at least when I tried it. I would have liked it more, if it wasn't so limited.

At least we'll have Duke Nukem 4ever to tide us over until then.

Yeah, the sneak-limitations really break it for me. I don't normally mind linear progression so much, provided you can have even minorly branching routes to get to each waypoint. Thing is, you can't even engage in conversation with an NPC without using up a mission objective, let alone anything more complex. You can't rig up a conversation between yourself and two NPCs without burning entire scenes every time a different person talks. You can't even have minor events within a scene. No 'cutscenes' to set the mood, and the entire 'spherical planet' deal can really make it hard to arrange props to make a coherent environment without it seeming a bit... fisheyed. Indoor sections are insanely hard, let alone trying to make a cave. Some special effects like the nuke only trigger when you're within a certain distance from them, so you can't have one explode in the distance, and... blargh.

It can really try a persons patience. Its like it just wasn't intended to make anything but outdoor roaming missions, like the hologram ability in the standard space phase. Some of the maxis adventures are impossible depending on your species, and a good deal of the user-created missions are combat oriented, which you can forget if you haven't unlocked combat equipment yet. Great idea, just really not quite tied together so well...

I whole-heartedly agree. GA was still neat, just not awesome as I wanted it to be.

Why we even have seperate subforums for it still eludes me.

Well we can't just remove them. Where would we put it all?

I think there's plenty valid reason to archive it though than toss it out the window.

Of course, it's really up to Steve.

I personally found the hype to be more worth my money than the game...

i still see value in all the few year old threads in this forum, from back when we were poor little ignorant, hopeful son of a guns who spewed out creativity when we still knew nothing about the unreleased game.

Was about to make a topic just like this one.

Anyone still play it?

Any good mods for it that make it less painful to play?

Every now and then I get the urge to play it. Starting from the cell stage and ending right at the beginning of the space stage. As for mods I can't think of any. :/

I usually stop playing somewhere through tribal stage. The cell stage is still sort of fun, but has become kinda stale at this point. >_>

I still play it on occasion. But I never actually play any stages and just stick to the editors. I still love the novelty of creating adventures in Spore, but I wish GA could let you do more.

There is the BetterSpore Mods out there. That project pretty much died, but the latest version (1.5) has a ton of tweeks for the gameplay that make it a little more enjoyable. I find, though, that the mods tend to prevent you from sharing certain creations. But I think it only affects creatures with parts from Cute&Creepy.

My son still plays, at age 7, but he was explaining to me that it was getting too easy. hmmm....

Back to the mods part, are there any still out there?  Most of the pages in the stickied thread don't exist anymore....
