Title: Borderlands

Why do we have no topic on this yet? It only comes out in two weeks...
I think it looks good, but I'm still on the fence about buying it. If I do get it, it'll be for the PC.

I dunno...

Fallout 3 got a lot of my time. This smacks of Fallout 3 Lite.

I played it at PAX, I got the feeling it would become repetitive / boring. The random guns are cool but I highly recommend you wait for reviews.

So if I get this I will have no one from GS to play with?  :'(

I'm getting it (on Steam though) :D

I'll probably be broke afterward though. Just got Brutal Legend, and I am going to get Borderlands, then I still have to buy L4D2 :-\

Post by: Gauphastus on October 15, 2009, 10:03:50 pm
Hey, I'm also getting it on Steam. Got it last weekend with the 10% off preorder deal.
We should play sometime, having all sorts of wild and crazy adventures.

To be honest though, I bought this on a whim. I saw like one video ever where some guys were shooting the crap out of some big rhino or gorilla thing, or something like that.
The memory is hazy.
Regardless... yeah.

I'll play multi-player with you on Xbox  ;D

Here is a Borderlands Quick Look (http://www.giantbomb.com/quick-look-borderlands/17-1498/)
This is DEFIANTLY not a game to play with people you don't know. Since there is no trading in the game, people will screw you a lot.

But 4 player with friends (or fellow forum members  :D) would be fun.

If you don't mind waiting for shipping, you can get the PC version on GoGamer.com for $40.

http://www.gogamer.com/Borderlands-for-PC-Front-Page_stcVVproductId82697650VVcatId444710VVviewprod.htm

I'll probably get it on Steam anyway...

I got the feeling more would sell on consoles. People who have played it said it felt like a console game.

IGN's got a review (http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/103/1035922p1.html) and Gametrailers has the opening cinematic (http://www.gametrailers.com/video/opening-cinematic-borderlands/57777) (as well as some gameplay played by their horrible demo player who makes the game look bad)

They really like that song by Cage the Elephant, huh? I guess it fits nicely.

IGN's review made me a bit more interested. Still i do not see my self picking this up soon. Have a lot of games that i need to get and i still have some good oldies that i have not actually completed.

I was thinking on passing on this one, but then I heard Best Buy is having a buy 2 get one free deal starting this sunday and I thought I could get this + Forza 2 and another game i'm sure just came out.
Title: Re: Borderlands
Post by: Fink on October 21, 2009, 11:25:32 pm
Just got it tonight. They were sold out at gamestop Correction, only had "pre-order" copies... so I went to the target in the same parking lot, and got the last one.
Dude, that game is a lot of fun.

I can't get to sleep, so I'm getting up to play some more.
If anyone is on 360, let me know if you want to play. (I just cleaned up my friends list so you might need to send me another friend request. Let me know who you are. Names: Son of Fink)
Title: Re: Borderlands
Post by: Gauphastus on October 22, 2009, 12:05:42 am
Yeah, I'm hearing from everywhere that this thing is fun.
Don't know if it's just the initial excitement 'cause you got your shiny new toy, but whatever.

Now I've got two of my RL buddies in on this, and I think like everyone who usually hangs out in IRC is getting it too.

Hope it's good.
Title: Re: Borderlands
Post by: Fink on October 22, 2009, 01:43:32 am
Pat called it "fallout lite" and in a lot of respects he is right. (Hell, it even has a "vault")

But the shooting is soo much better, plus it's not depressing like fallout.
I'm a jumpy gamer, and I don't mind enemy's hitting me head on like I would in other games.

I have 2 problems with it that I have ran into so far:
1. There is no storage chest in town.
2. The driving SUUUUUCKs. Halo warthog it is not.

Shoot me a message on 360 if you want to play. I haven't gotten to play multi-player yet.

Post by: Yokto on October 22, 2009, 06:15:11 am
What made shooting bad in Fallout 3 btw? I do not really get that.
Title: Re: Borderlands
Post by: Cobra on October 22, 2009, 06:30:51 am
For me I couldn't hit the broadside of a barn with out the VATS.
Title: Re: Borderlands
Post by: Yokto on October 22, 2009, 06:38:35 am
I did not really remember that problem. Of course i used weapons suited for there task. Weapons in Fallout 3 have different levels of accuracy. Sniper Rifle is extremely accurate wile a Assault rifle is less so. That i do not see as a weakness but rather as relative accurate to how it is in real life. You will not use your typical SMG over long range but a rifle is a weapon suited for that task.

but then again i tend to use VATS a lot in the game and sneak a lot. Maybe the game is just suited for my playing style. (Also like going HtH)
Title: Re: Borderlands
Post by: Celdur on October 22, 2009, 08:52:40 am
i think its more about the large array of weapons that all have difrent fire speeds and whatever tagged on with special abilities like fire and poison ect.
and on top of that damage numbers flying out of your enemies can be very satisfying

im getting it for the diabloness and the coop though...and because i need a new game >.>
Title: Re: Borderlands
Post by: PatMan33 on October 22, 2009, 09:55:49 am
There's a sniping mod that at least makes the sniping better in Fallout. Otherwise, whenever you fired the gun it was like the game rolled a die to see if you hit... even if the enemy was an inch away from your face with his back turned. And you'd still miss sometimes.

**EDIT**
I bought Borderlands.

Warning - while you were typing a new reply has been posted. You may wish to review your post.

Did ANYONE buy it on the xbox? Or am I screwed?
My computer can handle it just fine (i7 Core), but I just like playing games more on the console. I don't know why.

Then you must have pre-ordered, right?

Or does it just come out on steam late?

"Pre-ordering a digital copy of Gearbox Studiosí Borderlands through Steam is an easy way to knock a few bucks off the purchase. Instead of dishing out about 50 hard-earned bones, eager reservers can steal the title at 45 bones."

If i was buying it i would buy it for the PC. Somewhat safe bet is that any game coming out of the PC, especially in a PC dominating genera like FPS or RTS, will have more follower on our forum on that platform.

This intrigues me..the requirements are as steep i as i would have thought...

System Requirements
OS: Windows XP/Vista
Processor: 2.4 Ghz or equivalent processor
Memory: 1GB System RAM (2GB recommended with Vista)
Graphics: 256mb video ram or better (GeForce 8 series or higher/Radeon R8xx series)
Hard Drive: 8 GB or more free space
Sound: Windows compatible sound card

I have

AMD athlon 64 processor 3500+

1 GB RAM

Geforce 8500GT

If i am reading right i should be able to run boarder land just fine...

Still i should probably just wait and until i get my 360, even though i should be able to run it fine i don't want to buy such a expensive game and come to find out it runs crappy on my computer despite what the requirements say.

It's a good game, but it takes a while to get used to the structure of play. Quest progression really doesn't mean anything, and online play made me extremely frustrated until I figured this out.

Also, the PC port is horrible. The menu navigation is pretty clunky.

Ok so i figured it out.

1) Instead of selecting your character, just select a new one.
2) Wait like 2 minutes for the screen to fully load
3) Once you join a game just become your main character in the lobby.
4) It works, profit.

Played with Kishmond and a friend of mine for a few hours.

Lots of fun, driving around blowing guys to bits with rocket launching buggies.
Great performance aside from the damn thing crashing a whole bunch of times toward the end there. General protection faults galore.

Still, it's fun. I sure hope there are other areas though 'cause the one we're in is wearing thin.

Title: Re: Borderlands
Post by: Fink on October 28, 2009, 11:59:52 pm
I think it's a tad more complicated then a check box. "Check here to enable cross platform play"

Shadow run is the only game that I know of that did cross platform play. Face it guys, it was a theory that didn't pan out. No other games with ever try it again.

... but it would be cool  ;D

They are trying to Cross platform a couple of MMORPGS ( Champions and STO) thats it though.

The new Final Fantasy MMO (XIV) should be cross-platform, and didn't they eventually make XI cross platform too?

Anyway... Borderlands is pretty fun. I've not experienced any major glitches on the PS3 and the patch is supposed to drop sometime today.

Title: Re: Borderlands
Post by: Yokto on October 30, 2009, 02:14:20 pm
Well i think one of the greatest reason why cross platform have never made it is because well... PC is generally superior when it comes to controls vs console game. You ether have to suck up the game a lot on the PC to make it fair or simply leave it unfair. I think shadow runner did suck it up for PC but as i have never played it i can not say.

Some games would probably have a leveled playing field however. Racing games should be about equal. Platformers to. FPS and especial RTS? No way in hell would they ever be equal. (At least until consoles learn to adopt a better control scheme.)
Title: Re: Borderlands

Give consoles mouse and Keyboard support and you can instantly handle cross platform support, FPS would be equal and so would every other type of game. However the Average PC gamer isn't 8 and screams down a mic, and the average xbox live player ( cant say about PSN) is 8 and screams down mics. So it would be too very different types of people.

Back to the game  ::)...

I think I maxed out the games fire rate. I have so many bonuses that add to it, that it will sometimes lag the game I'm shooting bullets so fast.

Man, this game rocks :)

I'm Roland and right now, with all the bonuses and leveling I've put into my Sentry, it's winds up doing more damage than I do. But I'm only Level 18.

Kishmond... what the hell did you do to get that? Do want. >.> Just like with the first Mass Effect (but inversely) the backpack is really annoying in this game. I just start getting into a groove, beat about half a level and wipe out a ton of enemies only to not have enough space to carry any the awesome loot laying around. Mostly because I'm a pack-rat, but also because I keep one of each type of weapon on me for versatility. I find myself using SMGs and Repeaters more than Shotguns and Shotguns. I've also been using this super-powerful (for my level) awesome Sniper Rifle to one-shot enemies.
Title: Re: Borderlands
Post by: Kishmond on October 31, 2009, 09:27:33 pm
I don't know, it just happened. Some kind of bug, probably. I also keep 1 of each type of weapon, except repeaters and SMGs. I also keep several types of class mods on me, as you can see. They're all very useful in different situations.

PS- My bird does 8000 explosive damage and can attack 4 people.

So I was playing online with some people and got 2 levels quickly. I hate being the only reasonable/friendly person in a game sometimes. If someone is dying I help them up. I give up my spot in a vehicle if someone else needs/wants to get in. I try not to worry about grabbing too many weapons (especially since I wasn't the host). But does anyone ever do anything in return? No. I mean is it that hard to go over to a person who is down, crouch behind them, and heal them? Hell.. I toss out my Scorpio (which is +4 in Aid Station) just to heal people sometimes. Lousy ingrates.

My Turret now does shock damage which is nice, but I'd rather it do Fire or Corrosive Damage... oh well.. I'll just have to find those artifacts later. It can do a lot of damage, but not that much though. 0_o It's maxed in it's damage output.

Sorry, man. Before the convention, I blasted through the whole thing with my friend.
I figured I'd have been gone for up to three days anyway, and I don't expect anyone to wait up that long. Maybe overnight 'til we see each other the next day, but not for half the week.

In other news, this game has new game+. Playthrough 2.
It's like Diablo's Nightmare difficulty except the game's still fun.

I'm level 30 and doing level 20 quests and everything is so easy and it's not fun but I'm compulsive about it and just have to finish every sidequest and punctuation is for squares.

Just finish the main quest and then do Playthrough 2. Everything is a lot harder on Playthrough 2.

I wish they would fix the 'only 4 bonuses showing up' thing.

Also, this gun shoots three-round bursts, and each round shoots 3 bullets.

Those are the pellets. Each one shoots like 12 pellets. the matador shoots up to 3 times those pellets.

I know it's confusing, but those things rocks, trust me.

Title: Re: Borderlands
Post by: Doomsday on November 15, 2009, 11:09:27 pm
It was pretty much said in the past that if Borderlands did well in the sales they would make a sequel. There is a developer quote along those lines somewhere. I think it's done fairly well, but we'll have to see if they give some TLC to the DLC, because usually downloadable content is sub-par or just about par. It can be okay, but it is almost never "great". >.>

That and Mass Effect 2 is coming so Borderlands, any DLC it might get, and it's probable (and eventual) sequel will probably have to compete with that and a bunch of other games. It could do well if they time BRDRLNDS2 to come out in the lull between ME2 and ME3.

It needs to go a bunch more play testing and balance for PC players. A direct port is why the PC version is (from what I hear) as effed up as it is.

I'm mostly concerned about the actual content.

I got zombie island. It's fun, but doesn't add any content.
If you have played the main story then you'll like zombie island, but only because you'll get all the jokes.

I actually like the "story" of borderlands, but I admit it is the weak part of the game.

Ovi and I got all the DLC and we finished Zombie Island. We did the first part of Underdome and got an extra skill point. We're doing the second playthrough of the game now, our characters are level 45 now. Found a huge Skagzilla quest that we missed the first time through. Plan to do General Knoxx later. Great game!!

We also have secondary characters that are level 18 (ish).
