I was going to note, the initial progression / synth it sounds like you just picked random notes, so many are not in key with each other, as in they don't follow music theory or fit together in a key, to improve this i'd pick any major or minor keys and look at the notes in each ones, and base your music to follow that, if everything is within a key it'll all sound good and it'll avoid the random sour sounding note, which is what gec is referring to.

Also, another useful rule that I've learned through playing guitar is the 1-4-5 rule.  These are chords, or in the case of many songs the background, that sound good together.  This is the reason why those "40 songs with 3 chord" videos on youtube work, because you can transpose any song into one of the other keys, may favourite being G.

In that example, G would be the 1.  Go up 3 notes, not counting sharps, to the 4, in this case C, and then one more to the 5th, which is D.  This gives you your 3 notes, GCD.  Other ones I often use are ADE and CFG.

Finding minor key is similarly easy.  Go down from the 1 position 3 notes, this time counting sharps.  This gives you Em for G, Am for C, and F# for A.

So, an arpeggio in the key of C major going up an octave would be the notes (C, E, G, C, G, E, C)
I never got into playing chords on guitar, but by your description it's the same as strumming the first 3 notes of an arpeggio together

Hey, guys. Funny story.
Hilarious.

So I had this awesome tune come to me one layer at a time, with a bassline and a main melody. Basic pattern. I was worried I'd forget it so I put on my headphones and recorded myself humming it.
Worried that the humming didn't really convey much of what I wanted, I went into a MIDI editor to do it manually, properly.

Next thing I know, I'm playing up a half-made, excellently mixed piece of music. I was certainly getting there, not long to go. Just needed to fill it out some more, had to have the song go somewhere.
I'm listening to it and it goes into a rough spot of the tune that I haven't fully developed.
Had some high hopes. I was gonna render this thing soon to show it to everybody.

But, ha ha ha, oh wait!

TURNS OUT THE ENTIRE GODDAMNED THING WAS A DREAM.
GOODBYE FOREVER, AWESOME MUSIC.

I was apparently having such a good time with it that I quickly got completely woken up. That's six hours of sleep there.
Spent a good couple of minutes laying there, asking my ceiling why I was tormented this way.

The only thing I was able to extract was the extreme basic bassline I put in there because it run pretty well through most of the piece.
And yes, I'm committing the stupid bastard to a scrap MIDI file.

Gaaaaaaaaaad.

I'm down to collab with anyone if anyone is down,  It's always better to have 2 heads working on something than one,

I always have a big list of "projects" to do on the computer,
and when i'm bored / don't feel like playing games I work on one of these "projects"
and I feel I can never have too many different things I'm working on, because it gives me a bigger choice

my current projects include

-Learning  / mastering auto tune
I auto tuned the song rysworld sang for me, even though I butchered it, not knowing the actual song it was supposed to sound like,
I have 2 more songs coming my way, martyk

-collabing with guitarist / drummer in cali, (but waiting on their part takes a long time, when they sent their part i work on it like an hour and send it back waiting           a        week  to  get it back so this isn't taking up much time)

-Making Flash animation with brother, (He is a good artist but is retarded at computer, we're going to draw frame by frame and scan and bitmap trace in flash, in pre                planning stages of this, waiting for brother to get more serious about it)

-3d modeling, currently working on 2 different models for 2 different games,  I'm behind schedule on both of them, one is for a game that is accepting / paying for models to use int game, (Infinity : quest for Earth) I almost finished the low poly version, have to redesign half of it, (it's about 2000 triangles now) then need to design high poly version of it for normal mapping (~6,000-10,000 tris.)  so after I stopped working on the low poly I decided to get more practice before working on the high poly model,
I showed the low poly model I was working on around and got recruited for the Legend of Mana HL2 mod (there is a thread about it somewhere)  just from showing them the model I made for the other game, (and keep in mind that model, the one I was working on for the other game was the 2nd 3d model I ever made)
I can only do this when I'm in a certain mood, which isn't often, but when I am in the mood I'll work on a model for 3-4 hours straight and get a decent amount of work on it

- Learning C++   (was on pause for a while, because I'd rather learn from an actual book than from an e-book,  my brother got me a book on C++ today for my birthday, but it covers all aspects of C++ and all of its uses while I'd rather learn about the 2d / 3d / non ascii applications of it (programing for openGL or Direct X)  I made some progress learning on my own using online e-books, but lost motivation, I will return to it some days soon though

so most of my music stuff right now is waiting on other people,
and I could always use a new project,
if anyone wants to collab you should let me know

Does this count as music you make? I made it this afternoon. It's a tiny little Rackett that can squeak out a few notes, and I'm rather proud of it! I compared it to a lightbulb, soda bottle and pen to show the scale. On my screen the picture is half sized.

So, over on the Homestuck forums, me and some others have been making a little fan adventure for the last while that's gotten pretty popular.  We've got flashes and all sorts of neat stuff.

So, today we released a big end of act animation, along with an album, which I thought you guys would find neat. (http://teamparadox.bandcamp.com/)  I've got about 7 or so on there by me.

Ok, so after seeing Andrew's post about an album contest (http://mspandrew.tumblr.com/post/15222891959/the-next-album-a-contest), of course I got excited.

So I've been picking through some songs for the next album and narrowed it down to 3. Big thanks to Martyk, Mr. Wizard, and Celdur for giving their input. Still working on the 3rd song "Stalemate" but I might as well take advantage of the time and submit them on the last few days before the deadline. Anyways, here are the first two songs I have chosen.

ohgodcat (http://dl.dropbox.com/u/44939267/music/ohgodcat.mp3)

This one I sort of named after ohgodwhat, but that's as far as it goes in any relation. The song is entirely an original non-remix. It was hard to think of what character this best fits with, so I settled on the god cat (bec cat?) that we are newly aquanited with. It also has a sort of "carefree victory" sort of theme to it.

Paradox Remnant (http://dl.dropbox.com/u/44939267/music/Paradox%20Remnant.mp3)

This one was also difficult to assign. At first I was thinking Dirk Strider. But then I thought the Peregrine Mendicant in her new-found ring powers. I'm still just a bit iffy. I think I'll just let Andrew/RadiationFox to choose for me.

Oh, I really like ohgodcat, though I don't really know how well it works for GCat.  It seems a bit too upbeat for that.  Maybe the consorts instead?  I dunno.  Really like the name though.

Listening to both though in comparision, the two can sorta be seen as a Prospit/Derse thing.  Or alternatively, one that just crossed my mind, Ohgodcat could correspond to John/Jade on the ship, while Paradox Remenant are the others on the meteor.

Both very cool though.

EDIT:

Oh hey, I've been meaning to ask you Gec.  What do you use to make your music?

Just some cleaned-up versions. Removed small things I didn't like. A little polish. I kept some of their original names intact than their Homestuck names. Unless I am forced to adopt the name given by the music team IF it is ever used by a flash, I kinda like their old names better anyways.

I generally like to use Logic Pro in the Mac (why do I feel like I have countlessly told you guys this I don't know how many times?) but I'm trying to learn Fl Studio. Pretty much seems to be the most popular DAW and pretty powerful once you get around the steep learning curve. Be serious about it though. You buy a program like this with enough bells and whistles to play around with, you may have to spend around 300-400 dollars.

OCRemix has a good thread on that kind of stuff. Remixing is a good way to learn how to make music. http://ocremix.org/forums/showthread.php?t=42698

He only has experience in using real instruments and recording...

I've learned from him about recording on that software before. I know the basics of recording using them, I just don't know how to play any instruments proficiently enough to use that ability.

I'm working on learning the guitar, but that's of course a long process. I just want an outlet for my creative juices(tm) sooner rather than later.

-EDIT- Actually on second thought I'll ask him about using synthetic instruments. It just occurred to me I've never asked him about that. Like a doof, I am.

Well I guess that makes sense. I dabble with virtual synths all the time and I'm still learning. But you probably could get a better grasp of music theory from your dad than I could. Once you have that then you're set.

Logic Pro comes with a good set of synths right out of the box. And you can find a pretty decent amount of expandability on the market for it. FL Studio is more widely used too on the PC side. It doesn't come with a good set of synths right out of the box, but you can find far more additional and more popular instruments for it, and a whole lot of free ones at that. Personally I still like to find some good quality instruments for a reasonable price. Places like Big Fish Audio and KVR Audio can help you expand your DAW to have more instruments to play with.

My voice isn't the greatest, my guitarwork is amateur, and my topic's a bit trite at this point I would think, but making original music at all feels good, in an indefinable sort of way.

No, I don't know why my vocaroo clicks. It's done that since I got my new headset, even though my headset doesn't do that with anything else.
