Title: NEW spore patch. Start up your game to get it.

Spore Patch

The focus of this patch is to fix some bugs that have been reported and to respond to feedback we've been seeing from the community about tuning and stability. We managed to squeak in a few fun things too; there's a cool cheat that allows you to turn your creature into a blocky representation of themselves, a new "inspection" feature for the creature creator to browse the parts stats that you have applied to your creature, and the much-requested "evoadvantage" cheat - you'll now be able to start a new creature game with a more evolved creature of your choice!

To get the patch, launch the EA Download Manager to download and install it. If you didn't install the EADM when you installed Spore, you can get it from http://files.ea.com/downloads/eacore/eadm-installer.exe.

This is a PC only patch. Mac users should check back soon!
Features

* New Cheat: "evoadvantage". Enter this cheat when are starting a new Creature game to choose any creature from the Sporepedia. Start a new game with one of your more evolved creatures!
* Display part statistics when you are in Build mode. Rollover any part and hold down the 'i' key.
* New Cheat: "blocksmode". Turns creatures into their blocky representations.
* More style filters. Open the cheat window and type: "stylefilter -microscope" or "stylefilter -norainbows" or "stylefilter -nextgen" to see the new styles
* Added 70 new planet scripts with a low terraform score, especially of the "hot and high atmosphere" type

Graphics/Aesthetics

* Animation improvements
* Improved the planets fogging, blooming and lighting
* Fixed animation issues with tool handling, hand walking and some of the more oddly shaped creatures

Tuning

* Creature phase: Improved the pacing towards the end of the game, and increased the challenge in Normal and Hard modes.
* Tribe phase: Increased the challenge in Normal and Hard difficulty modes.
* Civilization phase: Increased the challenge in Normal and Hard difficulty modes.
* Space phase: Made Empires in Easy and Normal modes demand reasonable amounts of money in exchange for peace and adjust the level of punishment if the player doesn't pay
* Space phase: Made disasters less likely to occur in Easy and Normal modes and increased the time between each attack from the enemy empire when the player is at war.

Miscellaneous

* Creature phase: Improved the way posse members behave during threatening situations and fights.
* Space phase: Made finding your home world and colonies easier in the Galactic view.
* Tribe phase: Made it so that tribe members can travel on steep hills if they need to do so now, but their speed will be reduced a lot.
* Fixed an issue with attacks not working on some bigger animals and larger animals not dying correctly
* Fixed collect mission not completing correctly when all parts have been collected
* Fixed problems with the "Rolling Thunder" and "Déj Vu" achievements not being awarded as they should
* Fixed floating parts not being deducted from the budget when loaded into creator
* Fixed an issue with the rotation rings not resizing correctly when a part was resized and improved their look
* Fixed an issue where the terraforming score of planet could differ when revisiting a solar system
* Fixed the keyboard controls for zoom & pitch in the Colony Planner not working properly
* Fixed a crash that could occur when watching an epic creature attack a city
* Fixed some issues where the game would freeze when using the Creature Tweaker tool or when capturing a planet in solar view
* Fixed an issue where not all tribe members would obey the raid order when a large group was ordered to raid
* Fixed an issue where banning a creation from one of your other saved games would black out the main menu

Sounds fantastic!. Except they did what i feared...

They messed with the space stage so that it now affects everyone. I play on normal so now i get screwed because my universe was never *broken* once...i knew that was going to happen.

Anyway most of it IMO is fantastic. Thank you Maxis Thank you!.

Thanks Maxis!

Where do we report bugs? I had a bug where near the beginning of the space game the crashed ship I was supposed to find dissapeared.

They way I got raped in civ on hard kinda told me it was already hard enough. Hell, it was simply impossible to win.

Good thing they released a patch, but they'd better get some more diversive missions for the space phase. Those very few standard ones get old really fast.

Great, a patch! Many good fixes in here. :) I did notice something pretty big is missing though...

No terrasculpting planets fix (they reset themselves when you zoom out)? :(

Oh well, perhaps it was too difficult/time consuming to fix for the first patch, but I hope to see it included later.

They just came out with the patch for the Mac version of the Creature creator about a week ago, so i'm certainly not going to start holding my breath now.

Yes, I've had that happen MULTIPLE times. I've also had the big where I start out creature in the middle of the ocean, and (are we still marking spoilers?) the sea monster eats you as soon as you go on dry land -- where all the other creatures are. Serious game-breakers.

Wow. I can't skip the black hole screen at the beginning anymore. It used to be that I only had to wait until the EA exploded and then I could hit esc and skip to login. Now I have to sit through the whole thing.

Anybody know exactly what animations were improved?

Yes, that also caught my eye... I HAVE seen bipedal tribe members doing pushups while bored in the village.... maybe they mean creatures whose feet are located closer to the front of the body than their graspers (like Sebulba the Dug from Star Wars). Maybe they biased the animations to creatures built more like humans/raptors or mantis/centaurs and they fixed something for the crazier designs.

I remember one of the devs mentioning that once CC was released and sporepedia began filling out, they'd have a much wider range of creatures to test in Spasm, so I'm guessing that's what happened.

oh pfft, so we DO need the EADM to patch it up :P

Minor thing though as we can just remove the EADM afterwards.

It'll be nice to see a little more variety in those T0 and T1 worlds.

The evo advantage cheat should enable us to play with our more complex creatures :)

What about those planet sculpting issues or are you still working on that? just wondering.

Also, does this work on old saves?

Hey Lucky (caryl), say thanks to everyone for me.  That was a lightning fast patch for so much tweaked up!  Woot, playing as my premade creatures!  I knew you'd come through xD.

Oh one thing maybe to think about, the game awards time badges even if you are paused the whole time (I left it running all day by mistake and earned a badge, lol)

Now I try to install it and it tells me it needs Windows XP or higher.
Spore itself installs and runs fine on Windows 2000, but I can't install the download manager?

Is there some other way of getting the patch?

I agree with Spiritofcat, there really needs to be a more accessable way of getting the download, you guys at Maxis don't deserve to be chained down by this EADM.

EADM has some wonderful horror stories tied to it...I read about this one guy who had a comp that could actually play Crysis on full settings, but EADM wouldn't install the 64-bit version, only the 32-bit(so all his fancy hardware didn't matter). The responces he got from EA tech support where half absurd and half hilarious. He even showed he could run the game with a cracked 64-bit .exe, just not the EA one!  ;D

Anyway, great work on such a quick patch! Is this retroactive, IE affecting our saves?

You might try checking download sites later to see if someone has reuploaded it eadm free.  I think the primary function of the EADM is actually just to ease the server load a bit by using peer to peer bouncy thingy that I am blanking on the technical term for...I think.

I STILL can't get the patch to install, it keeps saying that some sort of error happened, it doesn't say what error.

Why didn't you guys at Maxis just use a normal patching method? or at least have a normal patching method available.

I'm going to try a comp restart, see if that helps.

Ah good. If someone wants to just make a torrent of it and upload it to mininova, or just upload it to Rapidshare or Megaupload it can easily be shared to people who can't or won't run EADM.

That error fails because that's the hole frigging point of a patch.

This reminded me of the problem I have with the EADM. I clicked something on the sims 2 page and it added a "The Sims 2 Store" to my EA DM account. After that point every time I opened EA DM it would attempt to download "The Sims 2 Store". I could pause this process. I could even delete the files that had been downloaded so far. But I couldn't find a way to permanently remove it from my EA DM account. So I give up and uninstall the EA DM.

Now I want the Spore patch. I install the EA DM and open it up. Guess what. It starts downloading the "Sims 2 Store" again. I pause it and delete all files it downloaded. I run Spore. Nothing happens.

I close Spore and pull up the EA DM. It resumed the "Sims 2 Store". How convenient. I just throw my hands up and let it finish downloading. It finishes downloading and attempts to install. Says I don't have The Sims 2 installed. No really? I would never have guessed. Thanks for telling me.

I run Spore. It prompts to download and then install the patch. Everything is fine. It finishes patching and then launches Spore (I didn't want to launch Spore at that time but fine). I get a pop up from the "Sims 2 Store Installer".

Now if I keep EA DM installed I get a pop up every time I run Spore to install the "Sims 2 Store". If I decline it does nothing, but prompts the next time I launch Spore. If I cancel then delete the installer, EA DM downloads it again. If I pause that download it resumes the next time EA DM is ran.

Well I got the patch, time to uninstall the EA DM. Thanks EA for a quality, easy to use product.

They made the civ phase harder? ....... Why?  :-\

Because you could play it on hard with your hands bound to your back and still win, and that doesnt require extreme spore or feet movement skill.

Actually, just tried this for laughs.... Using my nose to skip animations and my feet to control the mouse.. I didnt actually play it at hard since im playing the patched version now, but i did beat the game with a religious civ within a hour! Got the rolling thunder achievement because the bug prevented me from getitng it earlier  ;D Feet skills ftw.

Anyways, im pretty much convinced normal will be doable aswell using feet, easy was so easy that normal will do, the spice gathering at the start was tough but attacking citys is actually really easy (click religious buttin, then click on the city you want.

Oh and maxis, kudos for the control system, besides disbanding units and rotating the camera every action was doable, ok each of those actions might have taken me a bit more time but twas doable.

Edit: I wouldnt suggest trying this, it makes your mouse smell.. Alot  >:(    Im also getting a new idea now... moving the mouse was easy but clicking was harder, with a laptop with touchpad you could control the clicking with your nose and the movement with your feet...

My first impressions on the patch in space stage:
WOW, awesome!  :o
I mean everything looks so much better, the bloom, the lighting, the textures and the effects.
For those who wonder if it will work on saved games, yes it does!
Space seems more balanced and it certainly didn't break the space stage for me unlike what some fear.
I had time to terraform, collect spice and fight of the Grox.
It was less hectic as before yet still it kept me busy enough.
Didn't play the other stages yet.
Thanks for such a quick patch Maxis!  8)

Just loaded my most advanced game which is well into the space stage and I can't see any creatures on the planets. I can see population in the cities though. Also finding the game very choppy and not as smooth as before. This is on all display settings.

Also it has crashed to desktop on two occasions not sure i it's the save or something else.

Anyone else noticing any problems?

Going to start a new game and see if it's a save problem.

I went to the trouble of eqipping all of my colonies with uber turrets, mainly to help when the grox came a'callin... sure the uber turrets were nice but it didn't seem right they were basically useless unless you were on the planet... I just installed the patch and played for about 15-20 minutes... I had 2 pirate raids on my colonies, each time the warning lasted about 10 or so seconds before a message came up that said something to the affect of I'm no longer being plundered by pirates... Concerned, I went to the planet in question (T2, uber turret and 5 turrets in each of the 2 cities), they had a message for me so I rang them up and they said great job! couldn't of done it without you... But I never actually went near the planet during the raid... and this happened twice... so maybe uber turrets smash the crap out of pirates?

Could be coincidence, but this has never happened before the patch... Haven't played long enough to say for sure one way or the other... but I think uber turrets and regular turrets kick some booty now when you're away! (One can hope at least)

You don't need the EADM. There is a mirror to the patch here:

@WeatherMAN:
I had experienced the same message despite not saving the planet myself, though I don't know if I just had turrets or an Uber Turret as well. I just assumed it was a bug, but I guess this means that if your turrets/uber turret takes out invaders, you get credit for it ;D

Its funny really, there are so many little features here and there that they added because people simply said they wanted them. Like domesticating creatures, and being able to use them to get a supply of eggs, which was apparently not going to be in, until people groaned a lot. Maybe its just selective vision here, but Maxis do seem to really 'feel' the player base. Think about it, how long does it normally take a game to get patched, if a company is slowly suckling your money away already?

Unfortunately, its late, and I need to go indulge in a bit of that dreaded stuff... whats it called? Oh yeah, hygiene... before I get into bed. So no playing with the new patch until tomorrow. Le sigh.

The patch compeletly broke my game.

I just made it in to creature stage. All the creatures were invisible i had to save and reload to fix that.

There is an extreme lag in between when i click something  and when that something happens.
First i summoned a flock my creature never did the animation for it and my flock was invisible. As i was fighting an ant i was clicking bite and it was doing damage but neither me nor the ant moved. It didn't play any animation what so ever nor did it make any sound. I killed it and the ant still stood there and i was able to eat it while it remained there standing up.

Maxis i always stand up for you guys but now i am a tad bit miffed. The game ran perfectly since launch and now its utterly broken

Please help me.

Patch looks great! If only EA patches worked on my Spore.

I started up the game and got a message saying that there was a patch. I downloaded the patch and everything installed fine. Then when Spore started back up, it told me that a patch was available. Again. The game does not have any of the new fixes and features either. So I download the patch again, and it tells me one is available again. Once I download the patch, it says that I already installed it and Spore was already upgraded to v1.01.0000. Even though it really isn't.

So I'm kinda stuck in some limbo between having the patch and not having the patch. D:

Can somebody or the devs help? This happened with the CC too. :/

Ok...so some good things and bad things

First...LOVE the evoadvantage cheat freakin awesome to be able to enjoy creature phase with something Ive invisioned!

I started a new game on normal with a new creation of mine called based off the Salonians from star wars. Let me tell ya...Tribal is HARD!

The only tribe that was neutral to me was the first that popped up. The other tribes all were either frowning or straight up enemies. Multiple times Ive had my tribe decimated by two different tribes trying to come take me out. This kinda frustrates me as I was TRYING to play industrious but now Ive been forced into aggressive just defending my tribe. I before I would have a chance to collect food and rebuild my tribe I would be attacked again. I couldnt even put down a weapon shack because of this.

After there seemed to be a lul  in the action (all tribes except the one I allied are sworn enemies at this point) I collect some food, make some babies and start running toward green tribe to make them my allies. Only to have what happen? A FREAKIN EPIC IS STANDING RIGHT BY THEIR FOOD! So as my tribe tries to bring the gift the epic attacks...followed by the green tribe (at this point only 2 left) so I never managed to do anything productive...just more killing! GRRRRR...well...people who said that tribe was too easy...should be happy...I cant imagine it on hard.

As far as the graphics...look AWESOME...sun rises already looked nice...now they are just stunning! And overall Im very happy with what I see

Bugs? Yes, first after I made one creature my pet...the little round up music would play anytime the camera was by a nest. 2nd sometimes Ill hear a repeating click sound like the game is acting up...I dunno I cant explain it. Really my bugs consist of sound issues.

Oh...one last thing...my damn pack pissed me off in creature phase! I was out trying to migrate and next thing you know my pack would run off and attack some aggro nest...oh well...that was kinda fun.

Not sure if this is patch related or not but we just witnessed the craziest thing on my partners computer. (The patch seriously broke mine need fix now want to play rawr!)

An epic SPUN into one of those weird green cocoons. About 3 minutes later it spun out of the cocoon as a different epic. It stood there for a second and looked at its hands and tilted its head curiously.

Was pretty cool/strange

Wel I am dead in the water after the patch (sound lag, action lag, invisible creatures) . Odd thing is that the wife has the same computer as me (same MB, Ram, Vid Card, etc..) and she patched and is working fine. The only thing I can thing of off the top of my head is that I had sound issues in X3 (a space sim) and had to uninstall Media Player ans reinstall it.

Pissed off and going to bed now. (at least I got to the center of the galaxy before I patched)

I have to commend Maxis for responding so quickly with a patch in response to people's feedback.  For the most part the patch has made the game better, but it has also made it run more slowly for me, especially loading when landing and launching from planets.  It can now take several minutes some times.  It also didn't fix a bug where I have to sit for a minute or two before that bouncing off the planet's "ceiling" trying to get out (can be annoying when trying to run from a fight or do a timed mission).  So all-in-all good, but I think at least one more patch is needed.

Space looks prettier (this might be my imagination), and it looks like turrets take out invaders without you being there. But this is unconfirmed.

I have no turrets and do not refill them because they get blasted to bits in every attack, so i only use the Uberturret and i get the "the pirates are no longer attacking <Planet>" almost immediately.

*Exhales* FINALLY :)

Edit: Oh, and you get flags on all colonies when viewing the galaxy now, so you dont have to guesstimate how big your empire is. Also the weapons do not unselect when you use a Repairpack or en Energypack (which was very annoying, Thanks ALOT for fixing that Maxis).

While the attacks are less frequent now, the eco disasters still happens as much as before (While playing on easy).

Is it weird that the game actually runs SMOOTHER for me now? Like, to test, I went to a barren world and started spamming it with terraforming, which would usually result in a pretty decent framerate drop as the planet's surface began to change. It wasn't unplayable, or even unacceptable really, but the framerate sunk pretty low, and now I can bring that cold airless world into a hot, dangerous, storm-filled lava world without any lag whatsoever.

Creature texture loading in creature stage seems to be a bit slower now, but that might just be my imagination. Like, the creatures show up right away, but it seems to take a bit longer for their textures to pop in.

The reason key mapping, or at least the ability to move "abilities" is so essential to spore is for the simple fact that as it stands items just go directly in order.  So while lazers might be number "1" on four out of my five races, on number five it's a graviton beam.  Considering that there is nothing preventing friendly fire, and you're often defending your colonies, you can see where I'm going with this right?

Please next patch? Pleeeeeease?

Oh cool it Mega. The game may be a mess but it worked on release. Considering the code there using though Id expect it to do this every patch. Until the end of next year. Were talking about a system where if you add one function, you have to change all the code to except it. Since almost all the code is working off the same group of procedures. Talk about a mess.

What are they for? Is there any issues with them? Do you need a high speed internet connection to download the stuff? Ive got really slow dial up so dowloading stuff is pretty much worthless. So ya i just wanna know about patches and stuff what they do, etc....Thanks!!

Hello and welcome!

Do a search for patch issues. In brief, many people are having issues with the patch so it is not recommended at this time <<massive under statement>>

Patches were meant to fix game issues but this one seem to have broken more than it fixed. For some it works fine, but its safer not to patch at the moment.
Title: Re: What are patches?
Post by: Doomsday on September 23, 2008, 06:17:18 pm
A patch is as the name implies. A fix. When you patch clothes you cover or mend a hole. In the computer world, a patch can be anything that is meant to correct a game/program, as well as fill in any security holes. This patch worked great for A LOT of people. People need to remember for every 1 person complaining usually 100 more had no problem what-so-ever. That just means there is a compatibility issue in the patch and that too can be fixed in a new, better patch.

About downloading stuff, even on Dial-Up you should be fine... the things you download are no bigger than a few KB... about the size of the picture just under my name (the moving one). The files themselves are really small. However if you get the game, avoid the patches if your game works okay.. because Patches a Big/Huge.

Oddly enough it didn't let me know it was available till just now, and i had spore open several times earlier today...  We'll see in a few minutes.

OK. where can i see what version i have?

The patching process seemed to lock up, so i aborted it after the progress bar hung a few pixels from the end for 10 - 15 mins.  When next i started spore it didn't ask me if i wanted to install the patch, so i'm unsure if i actually have it.

But spore at least still runs.

EDIT:
It must have installed since i can get info on a creature part by holding down "i".
