Title: would it be possible to make a transcribed version of the podcasts?
Post by: smjjames on October 26, 2005, 03:05:28 pm
because there are hard of hearing and deaf gamers out there and I'm hard of hearing. So I'm wondering if its possible to put the podcasts into text somehow?

As someone who has done transcribing before, it is a ton of work, and transcribing hour-plus podcasts would take a huge amount of time.

I'm just saying about this because I'm sure there are hard of hearing and deaf gamers who want to know what steve is talking about in the podcasts.

No, I realize that, and I apologize if my reply sounded curt. :-\

I was just speaking from experience, and I know that somebody doing that for free isn't really a possiblilty. So unless Steve hires somebody to transcribe the podcasts, then I guess you're out of luck. Sorry. :(

But then again, if somebody wants really wants to do it for free, then that's great. But that person won't be me.  :)

You could always try having voice recognition software do it... but it all seems too much of a hassle to be honest. Sorry, deaf gamers.

Actually I would LOVE to do this. I believe that Yahoo and Google are working on something which will automatically transcribe anything spoken (they will use it to search videos, audio, anything spoken really). I need to look into this a bit (or if anybody knows about this new feature).

Otherwise I would definitely like to at least TRY a speech recognition program to see what happens. I don't own anything like this, but if anyone out there knows about this and is willing to help out I am more than willing to give this a try...

Well, I didn't say that I PERSONALLY would like to do this! Rather, I would like SOMEONE or SOMETHING to do this so that I can provide this option for people who want a transcript of the show.

And now I vote Vivec to transcribe all of show #23! ;D

I don't know if this is just for XP or whether it's in previous editions, but this is how you get it in XP.

You have to right click the "Start menu bar" (I don't know what else to call it, the bar at the bottom of your screen). Then go up to toolbars, then select the language toolbar. Go into Word. On the language toolbar, make sure the Mic button is pressed in, then just start talking into your microphone.

I saw AOL had a similar service. That was a while ago though!
