Title: XBOX 360 is making me sick!
Post by: Toshipaine on October 24, 2005, 09:56:55 pm
Let me be abundantly clear I love Steve's podcast. Besides all the 360 talk it's a pretty balanced show. You mix things up with SporeTalk which I'm totally looking forward too on the PC and I thank you.

Tonight I went on a podcasting binge and subscribed to just about every gaming podcast that got high relevancy. Holy crap! What in the hell is the deal with 360?!  Why is every, freaking, podcast yapping it up about the 360 console? I don't mind one or two podcasts but it's like you'd swear Microsoft paid EVERY podcaster to talk about their console nonstop from here until new years! When are we going to hear about Nintendo’s revolution? When are we going to hear about PC games? When am I going to get a freaking MMORPG PC gaming podcast! ??? I think I need a hug  :'(

Well thats all fine and good but I'm a Gamer and I want other news and info besides XBOX 360. Listening to these Casts you would swear that Microsoft opened a vortex and sucked in EVERYTHING gaming except XBOX 360.

Steve from one gamer to another, thanks for keeping it real man.

I try to balance things out in every show, but considering that new gaming consoles are launched only once every 4-5 years, the Xbox 360 is pretty big news. Hence, I will be covering it quite a bit over the next few weeks. In time, the same thing will happen when the PS3 comes out, and then the Revolution and then we don't have to worry about another product launch until 2010 or so!

These things always go in cycles and right now it's the Xbox 360 cycle. Remember 7 months ago when it was the PSP cycle? And now you have to look hard to find a PSP-related story. Don't worry, it will fade in time.

All the talk is about the 360 because that is what everyone is focusing on now.
If podcast existed when the 2600, NES, 3DO, or PS1 I am sure that they would be the focus too. I see your point but like me Gaming Steve seems to be a fan of all. I like his Podcast for this reason alone.

This is why Gaming Steve is one of my favorites because his show balances 360 talk with gaming news, SporeTalk, Reviews, contests and other cool stuff. Other Casts devote episode after episode to 360. If you're not even remotely interested in buying the 360 it's nauseous. And it's not because I don't want a 360, but I'd shoot myself if I spent more than $500 bucks on a freaking video game system.

What surprises me is how thick-headed Microsoft is. Imagine when parents this holiday season walk into Best Buy, KB Toys, or EB and get ready to buy the 360 for little Jonny. They have the non-core system, with extra wireless controllers, recharger pack for said controllers, HD hookups, XBOX live package, and 2-3 games at the counter. The cashier rings up everything with tax for a grand total of $650 bucks. I think most will have a heart-attack! They'll think "Wait a second! We don't have a computer yet" or "you know that PS2 is only $100 bucks and games are $20". And that's what most will do. They'll either buy a computer or PS2. Another issue is Microsoft has pretty much lost the bulk of the southeast region due to hurricane damage. Buying a new gaming console is the last thing on their minds. And of course the rest of us have to deal is $3 gas.

All I'm saying is with my budget a $99 PS2 and a couple budget games for under $150 bucks is doable. The XBOX 360, hell no. I'm not going to buy into Microsoft's 360 degrees of hype.

I've just found out that the xbox360 isnt being relased in New Zealand until March or April :(
I wasnt going to buy one straight away, but I sure would have liked to play on one at the same time all you guys do.

I thought that MS was trying to release all on the same day, but it wasn't logistically possible so they only spaced a few weeks apart. Check to make sure that your info is accurate. If I had to guess, I would say that it will probably come out in NZ before December's end.

sorry to drag this off topic but:

Everyone shut up about how *expensive* fuel is in the U.S! This is really turning into a pet hate for me! The current average price for petrol in the UK is $6.40!

ahem, I personally wouldnt spend $650 (or £325) on a games console and I doubt a lot of other people will. I think Microsoft is desperately trying to wrest the hardcore gamer market from Sony (it wont work because a lot of hardcore gamers are fanboys who wouldnt switch systems if you paid them) at the expense of the wider 'family' market, poor Johnny will have to make do with a PS2 until a reasonably priced console comes along.

Also, people in the US gladly pay about $9.60 a gallon for Dasani bottled water, an amenity that comes almost free of charge from something lost to the test of time called a "tap" or "faucet," but when gas gets to 3 bucks it's intolerable. I don't understand people.

Dasani failed miserably in the UK. Aside from the obvious pricing woes maybe it had something to do with this  http://www.bbc.co.uk/comedy/onlyfools/christmas/1992.shtml.

I was talking to a guy who works at Gamesman downtown, he told me it wont be until March-April. So I guess that depends on how accurate his information is. We shall see......

A lot of our water over here is pretty crappy to drink.

A topic about the Xbox has magically changed to bottled water. We should all take up politics.
The media here in England arent saying anything about the xbox, everyones still crowing about nintendogs, it was released ages ago and theres a short column about it in todays Guardian (ok its the G2 section but still)

So will you not be getting a PS3 or Revolution at launch either? How will you feel when the PS3 is priced similarly or even higher as some journalists/analysts have suggested? Will you wait until the price comes down?

I find it odd I was willing to pay $1,500 for a computer, that's twice as much as my car cost me, But I'm not willing to even think abotu buying an Xbox 360. The only next gen console I would even consider is Nintendo's Revolution, and with their "aim at everybody" philosophy I have serious doubts about it going over $200. Nintendo is going to make that thing so cheap EVERYONE can afford it. I've noticed over the years though that when Nintendo makes a product it works, I found a buried Gameboy in my mom's garden (how did it get there I wonder  ???) and the thing worked after I cleaned it up and put in new batteries. There stuff is cheap and affordable. The only reason I got consoles when I was little is cause my parents could afford to put a SNES or N64 on lay-away and buy it for me. I think the price of the Xbox 360 is going to seriously hinder it's sales, hard....erk, better get back to work.

Krakow, you had me at "sickeningly rich".   :D

Doesn't Bill wear contacts now?

Being the total geeky, geezer gamer that I am, I'll end up buying all of the major next gen consoles -- capitalist pigs that these companies may be.

I'm a PC gamer. I think that about sums up my view of consoles. I bought COD2 Wednesday. Good god almighty does that game rock. Graphics is top-notch! Gameplay rocking! Story is good. Oh and it's been released almost a FULL month before the 360 version.  :D

Because people don't spend $600 bucks on a gaming system. They will however spend $1,500 on a computer system, because it has lots of other uses besides gaming. I use mine to play Beyond Good and Evil, play BF2, play CounterStrike, play MMOGs, make music, make sounds, do graphic design, web development, build web sites, work on Flash design and actionscripting projects, surf the web, play the FOREX market, check my IRA account, check my email, read the latest news, read blogs, LISTEN TO VIDEO GAME PODCASTS, listen to music, and so on and so forth...

plus, you can extend the life of a pc a bit by upgrading the hardware. Also, its easier to get a decent price for a PC if you want to sell it, an out of date PC is still pretty usable but an out of date previous gen console is going to have to sit in your attic for years until its worth something.

Look at games as a whole. Anyone who is serious about gaming knows that good games appears on all platforms thereforth is worth owning all if possible. If not possible, do not bash what you don't understand.

Lol. Cotrienla's a speedy editor like I am. ;)
In trying to realign with your original post, even though I know it was made back in October, I don't think that the 360 is currently getting enough coverage. Admittedly, Steve's podcast is the only one I listen to, but I visit several gaming sites on a near-daily basis, and this is the only game page that comes to mind that makes any mention of the failed deliveries and shortages. I could argue that articles about a new console are more valuable than articles about gaming, especially when something goes awry.

If we were to imagine this were televised news, then game news would be like the daily news. It's always current, and always has an undertone of urgency. I know family members have become obsessed with watching the news, because it is always late-breaking information, and it's hard to realize how unimportant all of it can be. (I happen to be the same way with gaming news. :P) Console releases, on the other hand, are like elections: that's the real barometer of what is taking place in the (gaming) world, and it's an event that happens regularly but infrequently. Console releases should be huge, and people are getting fed up with the 360 because it's the only real candidate on the floor. I actually find that more interesting than a standard release, and I want to hear all the info that I can about it, good or bad, because this might set an odd precedent. If this release had gone flawlessly I think it'd be more common to see consoles no longer worrying about being released in sync with their competitors. Instead consoles would be released when they were ready for release.
So, would that mean that multiple generations of the same system will be active in the market at the same time? Imagine how important an issue like backwards-compatibility would be then! The PS3 could relax and learn from all of 360's mistakes, and the bashful Revolution could hide away for another two years only to be revealed as the greatest console ever, simply because the pressure to stay current would be even more relaxed than it is now.

Hopefully no-one will get carried away with my metaphor here. I don't want this thread to result in drawn party lines or bomb-throwing. :-X

Then again, this is all politics to me anyways. It's just a different subject. And I'm apparently fond of run-ons. :)

Well I'd say the recent podcasts at least (the ones I actually joined because) were more about Oblivion than the Xbox 360. Still it's no crime to be interested in the 360, they were the first Next Gen system and so they're somewhat deserving of the press attention, even if they are more or less referred to as the Evil Empire lol. I'm looking forward to Oblivion, unfortunately I don't have Steve's PC, nor can I afford his PC anytime soon, so I'll be enjoying it on my 360.
