Title: Did steve even go to E3?
Post by: vonboy on July 23, 2008, 02:21:59 pm
he don't have any new podcasts up, even though E3 has come and gone. has he just been really busy. he always seems to make a couple podcasts, say he's sorry because he's busy (i know. taking care of children must be a handful) and then disappears for a few months.

I think Steve's state of existence is a more appropriate inquiry.

The site and forums are still getting paid for. So I somewhat assume he's still in existence and making enough for a living.

He still exists, he's just really busy I guess. I was hoping he'd do some reporting during E3 too.

Took a shot in the dark, it was one or the other.

Honestly, Steve can drop off of the face of the earth for all I care. He's done so little for us in the last two years, he's not even a part of the community any more.

But yet I pay the bills for the site and keep it running even though it costs me $5k a year. Perhaps I should just shut down the site and "not be part of the community any more?"

Are you going to be a part of the forum then? Like I said, you pay the bill and for that we are all very grateful, but you need to look at things the way they are. You aren't a part of the forum any more and you can't make the best decisions for it. If you want to come back and have it be like old times that would be great; otherwise, you've got to give one of the moderators administrative privilege so that things can get done.

If you can get Steve to lend you is mount. :D

After E3 was canceled in 2006 I have decided to no longer go to these so-called E3 events anymore. I can only go to so many events per year and this year's E3 (and last year's as well) were E3 in name only. E3 this year would be like going to a riverboat casino and calling it Las Vegas ... there is just no comparison.

So I didn't go this year. And to be honest I've been so busy with work recently that I haven't had any free time. The economy is in the crapper but yet I have more business than I've had in years ... go figure.

However I am sitting down with the guys from Blizzard next week to check out the new Wow Expansion, Starcraft 2, and Diablo 3, so I might have something for you guys in two weeks.

Also I am planning on going to Gen Con this year, which is starting to get a bigger video game presence year after year. As far as I'm concerned Gen Con is the "new" E3 (sort of, PAX is really turning into the new E3).

The sad fact is that I try to keep up with the site and the podcasts, but I make zero money from them and just do them for fun. And right now I run several companies and we have more work than ever before, so I only have so many hours in a day and every single minute of my time is accounted for it seems. If I could just somehow figure out a way to do these podcasts in just a few hours instead of the several that it takes me to make each show I could do them more often, but they take much, much longer than you think to create.

But I am around and I watch the site on a daily basis, even though I might not contribute to discussions I'm always watching...

Glad to hear business is going well for you.

Since you're checking in frequently, where would you suggest we place our various forum proposals and whatnot for you to look at? They've been largely ignored in the past, no response for or against them.

They have full administrative privileges, always have. The junior moderators can't ban people, but otherwise have full privileges. And I don't make the decisions for the fourm, the moderators do. And if there is anything they want which they can't do, they contact me and I talk with them.

To be honest the other moderators haven't written to me in YEARS. I only speak with LadyM on a regular basis, communication is a two-way street. If they want something they should ask ME for it, directly.

But until the moderators start paying for the site it's still mine to manage, and the buck stops here.

I'll take your word for it, although that conflicts with what I've been told by the moderators.

If that is the case... looks like someone (not you) has a backlog of stuff to answer for. Thanks for the clarification.

and steve, if your watching the forums, could you like maybe post once a week or something. like take a couple minutes of your time to let us know your there?

No you're not hallucinating, also it was moved (or copied?).

And as for Steve, like we said before, he's a busy man.

I know it's not much to ask for him to post here once in a while (a couple times a week by your standards), but he's got obligations in the real world too. He's got a job, besides keeping the site in order of course, also has a wife and child so I think the offline duties prove to be more important.

As long as he's paying the bills I see no problem with him disappearing for a while.

For a public summon, we require the human sacrifice of three members with less than 100 posts.

The sad fact is that I try to keep up with the site and the podcasts, but I make zero money from them and just do them for fun.

I mean this in the nicest possible way, and unless I'm seriously overestimating the popularity of the Gaming Steve Forums... the fact that you're not making money from this site says to me you need to get some part-time marketing help. You're missing out on a serious opportunity here if other folks can live off the ads they get from their blogs and this forum isn't earning you income. The google ad view traffic alone should be enough to... well, I don't know your numbers, but if MY piddly site made me $100 cash just posting a couple comics, a forum as lively as this should be earning you enough to pay for itself, even without new podcasts.

Am I missing something? I know I've clicked on ads I saw on the forums. The popularity here isn't enough to garner some sponsors for the site?

I am completely serious, two or three pictures of Will and Steve popped up during the "The Future Is Wild and Making of Spore" program that was on Discovery last night, when I saw him up there I almost fell out of my chair.

They were saying he was in the whole "making of" video that comes with Spore. Chances are they took clips from that and his pictures were some of the ones that made it in.

This is actually something I was wondering about, but it was just sitting in the back of my mind until now.

Something to consider would be the amount of traffic this site gets. Look at the pageviews for the last couple of months:
August: 1856876
July: 2059201
June: 2227289
May: 1475869

And the pages querying the database:
Forum Index: Page created in 0.033 seconds with 13 queries.
Everything Else: Page created in 0.193 seconds with 20 queries.
Posting Form: Page created in 0.04 seconds with 16 queries.
Stats Page: Page created in 0.104 seconds with 25 queries.

So there's around 40-50 million database queries a month, added to picture hosting and so forth. I don't know how much bandwidth that eats up, but it's not a small amount, I'd imagine.

However, almost all of those pageviews serve one or two ads. So that's a lot of ad views and there must be a fair amount of clickthrough as well, I'd guess.

Draw your own conclusions from that. I doubt Steve is going to wander in and tell us the facts, but you could draw conclusions either way from these data.

Steve stopped updating waaaaaaaaaaay before that large spike hit the site's charts.

That huge spike was caused by the insane influx of people into the Sporums, which was one of the reasons why the Exchange Corner was split from the Creation Corner. :)

I think he's General Grievous.
