Title: One Hundred Push Ups
Post by: Fink on July 20, 2008, 09:27:52 am
So I saw this on lifehacker (http://lifehacker.com/398581/one-hundred-push-ups-takes-you-from-zero-to-a-hundred-in-six-weeks), and I want to try it out.
Basically, over 6 weeks you work your way up until you can do 100 consecutive push ups.

I'm going to start it, but I want some forum members to join me. It's ok if your not in shape, that's the point of this
Let's start 7/21 and end at 8/29. Doing push ups every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday

Who wants in?

Might as well give it a shot.

Edit: Tried out that Initial Test (http://hundredpushups.com/test.html). I'm Rank 3... barely.

Should make a list in the first post to get everyone's progress organized.

My Initial Test: 15

First Day of Training starts tomorrow, I s'pose. Being a monday.

Yep, follow the guide for the corresponding day:

Keep in mind, there's no point to cheat. No point in cutting corners. No point in lying.

It's all about your own fitness. If you decide its not worth your honesty, no need to post. Just saying.

and with that, let the games begin.

I'm in on this one. I'm on rank 4 already but I'm by no means in as good shape as I have been. That, and 100 without a break is pretty impressive; it's a nice target to aim for.

Maybe you should take before and after bicep shots to see if there is a visible difference. There probably will be.

That idea wouldn't really work. Your muscles start to change after about two months of rigorous training. I don't think this will make much of a difference.

I did a bit working out a few days and noticed more muscles on my arm. Not too visible but still...

so what, you're saying this is pointless?

better to be insanely strong and look like a pansy, because then you always have the element of surprise.

Well I figure the three days can be put in anywhere in the week you have time (so as to make it more flexible and achievable). No sense in slavishly sticking to a M-W-F schedule if you can gain a day on yourself.

The site said several times that you should rest between days...
Title: Re: One Hundred Push Ups
Post by: Daxx on July 22, 2008, 12:44:35 pm
Yes, but you don't need to actually do that. You're supposed to take breaks so that you don't injure yourself, but two or three days in a row is not going to hurt you. It's only a serious problem if you're doing it every day.
Title: Re: One Hundred Push Ups
Post by: Josasa on July 22, 2008, 12:47:05 pm
Yeah, when you are physically training yourself you need to rest at least 24 hours between workouts in order to actually let your muscles 'heal' and prevent micro-tearing which will hurt you in the long run. If you continuously keep working out day after day, it won't work out, the results won't be what they could.

In the Army we did running one day and then strength training the next.

Gonna delay this exercise 'til next week. Then I'll start over.
I do a lot of heavy stuff at my work too, but I'd still like to be able to do 100 pushups.

Did 500 bicep curls straight once last year. That was quite an achievement.
I'd like to achieve this as well, but I cannot at the moment. Monday was an especially hard day.

Next week..

Ok, that increase from
15-15-12-12-15   to
25-17-17-15-25
broke me. A hell of an increment... I just could do 25-17-5.

But the whole thing does a hell lot to the upper body muscles (strangely even the bizeps).

I'm doing the final test on Monday. I couldn't wait til then so I did it today, and only managed 55 since I was tired from the workout yesterday. So I guess I need to rest before trying again. Not sure how many I will manage when I'm fully rested but I have my doubts. Anyway I'm pretty much done, and if the least I manage is to be able to do 35 more pushups than usual, then I'm happy!

OK, I did the final test after finishing week 6 in the easiest column. I managed 70 before my breathing simply stopped and I felt I had to quit. Still an increase of 50 pushups, which is better than nothing! Final review of the program is positive, but they really shouldn't let you try the final test before you've managed week 6 in the hardest(or at the very least the medium) column.

You know what? I've got loads of time to blow before my work season starts up.
I'm doing this thing. No screwing around this time (unless I somehow get injured or sick of course).

I ate a little bit a short time ago, so I'll start up in an hour with the initial test.
Then just to keep it straight, according to their plan, I'll just begin on Monday. Until then, I'll warm up a little with some other exercises.

Friggin' a.

EDIT: Did 26. I think. Possibly 27, but no less than 26. Doesn't matter.
I was so wasted that I forgot after laying there and resting for a minute.

This may not have to do with anything, but I used to be able to do 0 push ups, and now I can do 10. Whooo!:P
(This isn't because of obesity or anything major, just been growing like a freaking weed, so my muscles haven't been working too well. Also: I'm 6 feet tall.)

Week 1, Day 1. All sets passed, like last time.
My maximum for Set 5 was another 17 pushups.

Whoo.

EDIT: Oh, wow. I don't think I mentioned it, but before I decided to do this thing, I had already been watching my diet (just a little) and doing some old workout routine I used to do.
Bicep/ab/wrist curls, pushups sometimes, squats, and spot running. Not a hell of a lot. The workout usually only lasted at most a half hour.

I weighed myself a minute ago. In a week, I've dropped ten pounds. I weigh 170.2.
Hah. Now to celebrate by feasting on two whole cakes and a turkey stuffed with butter and gravy.

I weighed myself a minute ago. In a week, I've dropped ten pounds. I weigh 170.2.
Hah. Now to celebrate by feasting on two whole cakes and a turkey stuffed with butter and gravy.

Last measure I was 143.

I was 160 last physical.

Just eating less and walking more.

I'll be glad to slim down to 160 or less.

But yeah, muscle tends to eat any fat you put in your body.
So if I hold at the same weight but still slimming out, I'm gaining muscle mass. I need it for all the heavy labor I do too.

6'3''  and as thin as can be.

relative to my hight, i'm underweight my doctor says im in the bottom three percentile. you know your too thin when an anorexic Girl (so to speak) asks for part of your meal, than changes her mind, saying you probably need it more.

they say skinny people get results from exercising faster, though. muscles show up faster. ive noticed it on me...

You'll get better if you do a bit every other day or so.
I used to be able to easily do 40 straight. I stopped because I had to go into work, and I needed my muscle strength to stay optimum before each shift.

I do hope more of you guys try this, or some other exercises on your spare time. Makes you feel pretty damn good.

I tried to get into this, though I pushed myself too far in the initial test.  45 pushups.  Mind overcame body, and then body was pissed at me and revoked use of my arms for the next 3 days.

Arrrrgh.

Okay, Week 1 is now complete.
Did 23 pushups on set 5.
It's good that no matter how much harder they make it each day, I can still do more every time, particularly on set 5.

Next Monday we got Week 2 which appears to be considerably more difficult.
Great!

Week 2, Day 3 done. Doing my pre-week 3 exhaustion test on Sunday if I feel good enough.

Had a lot of trouble on this one. It was hard enough on set 4, but then I got to set 5. Did 8 and just collapsed. Arms couldn't do it.
So I took another 1 minute break and tried again. Managed to get all 20.

Did Week 3, day 3 just now. Sorta.
It's still really hard.
This time instead of repeating the whole week, which I feel is pretty unnecessary, I'm gonna redo Day 3 until I can complete it fully. Set 5 destroys me.
It's really hard compared to the first two days.

EDIT: I am aware though that with working out you will sometimes hit a sort of hard spot.
It happened with my 10-pound dumbell bicep curls I did a year or two back. After I got past that, doing 500 straight was a breeze.
It's at that point you're supposed to increase the weight, but I didn't have anything heavier. Still don't.
But yeah. I'll get past this and week 6 won't look nearly as horrifying. (seriously, go look at it (http://hundredpushups.com/week6.html))

Has it done anything for anyone's stomach fat?
Title: Re: One Hundred Push Ups
Post by: Gauphastus on April 08, 2009, 10:34:23 pm
That's the hardest area to get rid of fat apparently, or at least the last bits of it. I'm no expert, but I think the best bet to getting rid of most of your unnecessary body fat, like in the stomach area, is exercise combined with some properly suited dieting. There's only so much garbage your body can handle; if you aren't clearly gonna use it, it'll store it for later.
Another issue is that people will tend to eat less meals but huge portions, when it's better to have several meals with much smaller portions.
My bro is doing this P90X thing and is bulking up pretty well. He cheats on the diet occasionally and doesn't exercise every single day, yet he's still shaping up pretty damn well, and fast.

Oh, here. This will probably help a lot of you, whether you exercise or not. These things are important.
http://www.wikihow.com/Eat-Properly

But yeah, a little bit of my gut is gone according to the before/after picture sequence I'm taking every fifteen days. With all this exercise I'm doing, it's would be easy to burn off at least a bit of it.
If you've got a fair amount of body fat, I think doing any amount of exercise will burn off a lot and quick. Shouldn't be too hard.
I don't have that problem myself, I'm just down to a bit of loose flab, and that's the stuff that is hardest to lose.

TLDR: Yeah, a tiny bit I guess, but I'm only a little overweight.

Post by: PatMan33 on April 13, 2009, 09:20:59 pm
Yeah the stomach is tough. To back up what Gauph said, a good diet is the first step in building muscle. You've got to make sure your body has what it needs to efficiently deal with fat and properly heal muscle tissue.

God I love metabolism.

-I do pretty much no physical activity whatsoever.

-I eat pizza every freakin day, but I'm not just talkin pizza.  I'm talkin large meat lover's pizza.

-I drink nothing that isn't carbonated.

Did I mention I weigh 130 lbs?

You can literally see my rib cage.

Of course, the metabolism doesn't just break down food.  It breaks down food and gives you energy.

For someone with a low metabolism, whatever you eat almost entirely becomes fat, and you tend to be low on energy or sleep a lot.

For those with a high metabolism, you much more easily break down food.  You'd also be a little more of a morning person.

For those with a metabolism like mine, you can eat ANYTHING and gain no weight whatsoever.  However, you have so much excess energy that it forms mild insomnia.

I may not be able to sleep, but I'm one skinny son of a b*tch.

Depends on your age. Your body will change, so you've gotta watch out.

I was like Jughead for awhile too. Wicked skinny and no muscle. Great shape too for no reason.
Excellent stamina and stuff.

Then I got a bit of gut and that stuff does not go away easily.

Just be careful.

(also, I quit doing the pushups thing. Following their drills got way too hard way too fast. F-it.
I'll go enjoy my fairly big arm muscles and pretend I'm not fat somewhere else.
Incidentally, I just ate two ice cream bars.)

I know it'll crash at some point (I'm about 17 now) but at least for this moment it's building even faster.  I'm down to 124.  It's not like my arms are real skinny or anything either, I got adequate muscle it's just no fat whatsoever.  Each year I'm just getting more and more energy than the year before.  I just went for four days w/o any sleep.

And good for you, at least you can say you tried.  Most people won't even do that.

Of course, if I were in this situation I'd work on legs first.  Just jogging will help out your cardio and help you carry your weight in addition to burning off calories so that you can do the stuff like push ups much easier.  Also, jogging is an easy way to target the most noticeable places for fat, especially if you pump your arms.

It's worth mentioning that some may have to go through the DOMS period of awesome crippling achey stiffness, if the muscle groups related to push-ups have been underused for a long time. It would probably be best if you allowed yourself a few days for that initial stiffness to subside, so that your muscles are properly prepared to be subjected to the workout you'll be giving them (and your endurance will be far better as a result of the absense of the immediate pain). Also, if you're quite heavy, you may want to consider doing push-ups from the knee, rather than the foot. There is such a thing as overdoing it, and the last thing you want to do is screw one of your elbows, as that would kind of immediately screw up your push-up routine whilst you recover. I'm no fitness fanatic and I'm actually still pretty new to the strength workout side of things, but it seems that once you remember to BREATHE, things get a lot easier. :P

Just remember that fitness of any good degree is more of a lifestyle choice, and not a one-off project that maintains itself. It would be far better for you to do smaller, comfortable sets of push-ups as a regular routine, every second day, than perform the 100-Push-Up program to completion once, then become bored and allow your newfound strength and endurance to decline. Fitness doesn't have to be a chore, just like eating healthy shouldn't be a matter of cutting out the stuff you enjoy all at once, and then struggling to maintain willpower.

Regular, short, non-agonising routine workouts with days between for rest  >  One-off crash courses where you regret each day and pray for it to end.
The 100 push-ups is only the beginning. If you can learn to enjoy it, or at least happily tolerate it, then soon all of you will be oiled herculean athletes, and together we will rule the internet as it's perfect masters.
...well, that is supposing you can avoid the taboo of ice-cream now that summer is rolling in~

I got one week down then SETBACK: I got sick. I started to feel the sickness come monday night then on tuesday, when I should have started week two, it was in full swing. Got over the worst of it by wednesday but had still been weak on thursday and friday. Today I repeated the last day of Week 1, so I should finally start week two on monday (a week behind schedule).

If you get knock off your horse, you just got to climb back on it.

Hey, I only just found this topic.

Seem like a really cool idea. I managed 25 on my initial, so it says I should start on week 3.

I look forward to Monday. This will hopefully be good for me, my body looks like the Pillsbury doughboy put through a taffy pull. With any luck, this'll give me a little tone.

Finally! Completed my fifth week, being put into the first column of sixth week.

Fifty pushups. It feels so awesome being able to say that.
