Title: Chrono Trigger DS
Post by: gec05 on July 02, 2008, 11:49:27 pm
Might as well have a dedicated discussion about it. Arguably one of the most highly acclaimed RPGs out there that still hold a large supporting fan base. If you are not familiar with it, Chrono Trigger was a game created by Squaresoft (as it was once called) for the SNES. The game was probably the first to introduce multiple endings in an RPG determined by you decisions or what plot-related side quests you have accomplished. It also sported an imaginative storyline of various tales scattered across multiple eras of time ultimately leading up to the main plot where they try to change the future of their world from a destructive menace. You can form a team of 3 out of 7 total heroes that join you during your quest through time, each with their own special techniques and great character development. They can even do double or triple techniques with certain combinations of heroes. The game has an excellent soundtrack that has been heavily remixed even today. And it was probably the first game (if not, Dragon Quest) to feature the art style of the now exhausted Akira Toriyama of the famed Dragon Ball series. The game certainly carries a lot of common RPG clichés, but it THE best clichéd RPG out there and you must try it.

As what was so far revealed for this new DS port, it will include touch interfacing, a new dungeon, and local multiplayer battles we can expect a simple and solid remake. If it is received well it may even encourage a much needed and more proper sequel.

... and I'll be ordering it from the USA the moment it is released because it never ever got an Australia release not even to this day.

So uh... did you copy that directly from Wikipedia or is it just a coincidence? :P

This game needs no introductions, just buy it and hope they don't screw it up. The new dungeon seems like an interesting move. I'm throwing spoilers out here now so don't read if you are one of the three people that hasn't played Chrono Trigger. It'd be very cool if the new dungeon took place in 1999 AFTER you save the world. The one thing I always wanted to do was see the futuristic world in all of its glory. With any luck they'll be able to tie it into the main story.

Now this multiplayer function is kind of dodgy... as long as it doesn't interfere with the main game they can do what they want; however, if it is some kind of battle thing I'm not quite sure how it would work. Unless they add custom characters with custom attacks it would be very boring after a few fights because there aren't that many characters.

Also I think remixing the music is a mistake, the soundtrack does not need any major overhaul. Perhaps making it clearer and crisper but beyond that, nothing needs to be done. It's just too risky.

I figure the same should be done about the music. Just update it with better samples, or even orchestrate it just enough to where it sounds the closest to the original.

We have a trailer! (http://kotaku.com/5022371/yes-this-is-the-chrono-trigger-ds-trailer)

It's the same video that is up at the Japanese site so if you've seen that you've seen this. Looks... faithful?

Well, I still want a remake.

Though I will get this the first chance I get. Who knows when my SNES cartridge will go out.

EDIT: What I really wish they'd re-release on DS is Secret of Mana. That game is tops.
The rest of the series blows ass though.
That's not an opinion either. It's simple fact.

Secret of Mana was fun but gamers nowadays are wimps and hate hard games.

Here are some screen shots! Do you notice anything different? (http://kotaku.com/5022436/chrono-trigger-ds-screens)

Same Chrono trigger can wait 15 years to make to to Australia (Actually that's probably about how long it is taking seeing we never got the console version). I wont care I can import the day you Yanks get it. It will be much cheaper this way to.

It's Wii games and Rock band that rubs me the wrong way.

Check out these new trailers! (http://www.gametrailers.com/game/8721.html)

They contain a lot of potential spoilers, specifically the new dungeon. Actually it seems like a whole new world! I'm very VERY happy with what I'm seeing. It looks like they picked up on one of the game's more intriguing alternate histories and have expanded upon it. :D

Make sure you are checking the game's official website! (http://na.square-enix.com/ctds/)

There is a ton of info and LOTS of answers. Be wary though, if you've never played the game steer clear because there are spoilers all over.

Have fun on the Golem Twins. They're one of the hardest bosses in the game considering the level you're supposed to be at when you fight them.
Title: Re: Chrono Trigger DS
Post by: Kaizer on December 06, 2008, 06:02:54 pm
I forget the exact strategy I used to beat them back on the snes...I think I used frog and ayla's attacks that grow at low hp and then just let em go crazy with 1 hp....
Title: Re: Chrono Trigger DS
Post by: PatMan33 on December 06, 2008, 06:13:50 pm
That's a very good strategy, though it may require some level grinding depending on how you play.

Maybe I cant remember since I really just killed everything in every map, Sucks I wont be able to play this since I lost my ds  :'(
Title: Re: Chrono Trigger DS
Post by: PatMan33 on December 06, 2008, 06:22:25 pm
Nah, that sounds like the strategy!

If you fight every enemy you run across you can use the top tier attacks about half way through the story. But if you're a wimpy wimpy wimp and avoid fighting the game is slightly harder. :D

Yeah, you have to hit the right flame. It should make a jingle when you hit the right one and direct all your attacks on it only. It throws you off when it does the roulette thing though.

Whos your party? I recommend Crono, Frog, and Ayla, use the kiss twirl to heal and cronos slash of crono and frogs dual techs to hit the CORRECT fire sprite. He wont flare if you only hit the correct one.

My main party is crono/magus (with doomsickle)/ and ayla

Frogs a beast once you get Hero and Masamune 2 (wont tell how, its a spoiler). Plus, him and Crono have quite posibly the best dual techs in the game.
Title: Re: Chrono Trigger DS
Post by: Cobra on December 16, 2008, 04:47:02 pm
Well he is a beast already both literally (being a frog) and figuratively although I seem to be spending a lot of time having to use his heal spells. Normally I been trying to use Robo as my healer he is tank but so often I find that I'm spending my time using slurp to regen frog only to lose the damage on the next hitmean while Robo is kept busy keeping chrono and him self alive. Be nicer if I could use Chrono as an emergency heal. Should perhaps stock up on potions and heal that way. I be doing twice the damage with Frog's crits each turn that way. Hopefully I can unlock a decent team heal spell/tech soon.

Chrono does eventually learn Life. But that's if one of your party members is already dead. :P

Your problem is slurp is to weak of a heal. You need a dual tech full party heal or Cure 2 (which is what Marle gets). I suggest taking out Robo (sorry, but Crono is a better tank imho with the Gold/Silver Earing i think it is (gives +50% life) and high quality armor) and putting in Ayla or Marle.

You are forgetting I'm only up tot he fiendlords keep so right now I don't have the earing so Robo's healing plus 100 more HP than Chrono is making him an absolute wall it be only made better if I could force enemies to attack Robo and let him soak up damage. Still I am tempted to switch out for Marle. Ayla hasn't become a perminate party member yet.
Title: Re: Chrono Trigger DS
Post by: eropS on December 16, 2008, 05:56:57 pm
Well Crono gets Life because he is a huge BA and just can revive people like that, but for your length that's not for a while.

Magus eh? Hm. Have you beaten Flea or Slash yet? And for Magus' Castle I highly recommend taking out Robo because he cant use Magic and against Magus that's a pretty big deal imo. But yeah, Marle will probably be a better choice because of her heal dual tech with Crono.

Gah, there needs to be a Crono Cross remake too....

I rate based on three different categories: Battle System, Fun, and Story/Atmosphere. The Battle System award goes to Chrono Trigger. Paper Mario gets the award for Fun. Finally, Final Fantasy VII gets the award for Story/Atmosphere.

I haven't played baldurs gate 2 but baldurs gate one (if it's remotely close to it) was dreadful, it took a DnD story, but thats not bad what sucks to me was the gameplay I did not like how it played. it feels more like: HEY HERES THE PATH TO TOWN NOW KILL STUFF. and then you kill the same exact monster palette for about 2 hours. although the co-op was fun since there was friendly fire  (:<

Alright... finally finished mostly everything. All that remains is to get an enemy I missed in the first playthrough and an enemy I have to be level 99 to see. I think I'll be calling shenanigans on that last one though.

So yeah, all in all I thought that the DS version was fantastic. If you missed the game the first time around you definitely need to get it... and if you're like me and just love Chrono Trigger, well this version has everything plus some new stuff so you can't not get it! The new things they added are alright, nothing spectacular. At best they're a weak attempt to better connect Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross. At wort... they are somewhat tedious and shallow.

I'm still playing it to I only have 2 of the endings the 1st normal ending I guess and the one where you beat the boss as early as possible using the new game plus to make sure your levelled. I'll I just finished the lost sanctum I think its called the reptite hidden village stuff. I'll probably just get the crash into lavos ending and maybe the exclusive ending and be done with it. I can't be bothered playing through to get the endigns with out ressing chrono.

I plan to beat it the first time around through Black Omen. Then, play it again and fight Lavos at the soonest possible time to get that ending with the devs and stuff.

Title: Re: Chrono Trigger DS

The Black Omen to me is by far the best way for the first time due to the massiva amount of XP and great items to be had. Also the music there is awesome.

If you guys want a challenge though go for Lavos as just Chrono. How? New Game + and when your at the part in the fair when Marle gets taken into the time warp, take Chrono to the opposite teleport pod and click the green sparkle and pray.
