Title: Sporelebrity
Post by: MTCason on June 11, 2008, 06:02:30 pm
Kotaku.com has an interesting article on Spore.  Apparently those advance copies -were- sent to significant celebrities, and we're going to have the chance to vote on which of them makes the best creature.  The article, unfortunately short but still a nice surprise, is found here:

Woah! You were behind that?

I used to visit that site all the time many years ago.

By the way, I just realized there's a Wiki entry on you! You really are a celebrity; write to Will and demand attention!

Yup, that's me.

I'm not going to write to Will. That would be crass.

But, damn, if I had been included... I would make creatures non-stop until the release date. I have 25 years worth of my own creature designs to work from, not to mention a working knowledge of the most obscure golden and silver age science fiction beings you could imagine. I would work harder than anyone to try to win that Sporlebrity contest, I assure you. Night and day, I would be generating creatures.

I very much doubt Williams would make the same creature over again, I don't think he liked it much :P I would be interested to see what he could do after getting familiar with it, and I hope he'll make his spore account known so we can check out what he makes ^^ (doubt it though)

Yeah Stan Lee is awesome, I can't wait to see what he turns out.
I wonder if this stunt is something they'd planned long ago, or if it's a result of our thread here that we'd like to see some celebs/professionally creative people and what they could do with it :)

Some more information on the Sporelebrities:

http://kotaku.com/5015380/stan-lee-ellijah-wood-carlos-santana-and-crecente-duke-it-out-with-spores-creature-creator

Seems the illustrious chosen include:

Stan Lee
Richard Branson
David Lynch
Ellijah Wood
Kevin Rose
Mark Cuban
Curt Schilling
Kent Nichols
Robert Scoble
Veronica Belmont
Carlos Santana
Bijou Phillips
Flight of the Conchords

I'm a little curious why they'd choose Bijou Phillips of all people.  What the hell has she done that's noteworthy?  And Elijah Wood I can undertstand from a LotR standpoint, but otherwise, he's a strictly B-list actor, too.
Title: Re: Sporelebrity
Post by: Blulightning on June 12, 2008, 02:32:24 pm
Not really sure who any of those people are, besides Stan Lee.... and let's face it, his latest stuff is just.... not good.... check out Pow! Entertainment if you don't know what I'm talking about...

Anyways, as for why they chose no-name actors/actresses, I'm guessing it was simply about who had contacts with whom and who would reply.

It's 'just a video game', after all... not a priority for most 'celebrities.'

Another article at Kotaku about their experiences with the Creature Creator.  I should warn, there is some strong language in this one.  Probably not suitable for kids.

I think they chose such celebrities because they are hoping to make Spore interesting to the mainstream, rather than just to those who already are gamers.

They surely must have seen some expansion of brand recognition and penetration from Robin Williams playing with Spore; for the average person movie and television celebrities confer legitimacy to products. There are far too many people who only begin to like something after a celebrity they follow approves of it.

It's all rather primate behavior - the apes need the Greyback to grunt approval before they will touch something.

I am sure that EA marketing is very interested in getting as many conventional (non-gaming, non-nerd) Grayback celebrities to 'approve' of Spore as they can, so that the game will gain greater market penetration and brand awareness overall.

We are irrelevant in this particular process, we are 'already in the bag' and do not need to be appealed to further.

Doubtless, they also want to capture non-gaming geeks (otaku, non-mainstream types) as well, thus the inclusion of Stan Lee... he is well known to the comic book crowd, not all of which overlaps with the gaming population.

The choice of Ellijah Wood may well be an appeal to non-gaming fantasy-focused women, in the hopes that if Ellijah 'approves' of Spore, and talks about it, that will give 'permission' for such women to try out their first computer or video game. The same can be said of many of the other names on that list.

Just think marketing in regarding this, and think of that marketing in terms of expanding the user base both wide and deep, hopefully into  a demographic that normally would not play games. I think that the EA marketers are hoping Spore will be a breakout hit, one that expands their mindshare overall.

If they were going to get famous people they should have gotten some good sci-fi people like George Lucas or Steven Spielberg. Heck I think getting some people from the Jim Henson's Muppets to make creatures would be awesome since these are more or less virtual puppets you control in game.

You're already a Sporelebrity.  I hope you make Unicorn Jelly--a college friend of mine is enamored with U.J.

Hydromancer, you're a Sporelebrity too.  How many Spore-Fiends don't know Naucean?

As for other, lesser, celebrities, I'd like to see what Shigeru Miyamoto would do with the Creature Creator.  I like Neil Gaiman too so he'd be a fun one.  <POLITICS> And maybe a politician or two.  We can have Obama and McCain's creatures battle it out </POLITICS>

1) Kotaku's list includes only SOME of the celebrities.

2) Many of the celebrities listed are VERY influential people in various circles. It's clear that they're trying to appeal to a variety of people, not just sci-fi fans. For instance, Richard Branson is by far the most spontaneous / innovative businessmen on Earth. Kevin Rose is the defacto leader of the social networking revolution (Digg owner/founder). Mark Cuban is a very famous billionaire dot com guru / owner of the NBA Mavericks. Curt Schilling is regarded as the one of the greatest pitchers in American baseball history. And the list goes on and on!

Picking Lucas and Spielsberg would be nice, but it'd be a mistake to confine the list to only creative, sci-fi people.

Yep.... that's definitely what Spore is all about.... maraca and bongo creatures  :-\

Maybe it's just me and my utter hate for celebrities and EA's marketing ploys... but... this idea of 'celebrities' playing with it before I do just annoys me.

I don't mind if gaming-enthusiast and comedian Robin Williams messes with it, or maybe Stan Lee (even though I never really liked a lot of his work)... but when it comes down to some actors and actresses, that I've never even heard of, and people with probably no creativity... I'd much rather see Jennifer Reitz or Hydro, getting it before they do...
At least I know that Will Wright even used Hydro's creature designs.... what has Ellijah Wood ever done for Spore!? I ask you, what!!!??

We got our demo version of Spore Creature Creator earlier tonight. My first order of business: make another awesome-tastic beastie. Peakrok here defies logic and physics, but that just makes it even more intriguing. Note the adorable way it plays with its kids if you leave it be. D'awwwww!

This critter is available on the Sporepedia! Just search for "Peakrok" or look under the user name "zerochan" to find it.

Here is one creature of mine I will be making when the Creature Creator comes out. It's a VERY old design of mine, but I felt compelled to update it for D&D4E recently. I wonder how it might be made in Spore. I think that there will need to be some changes.

maybe you can attach some limbs on the head, and some how make them stiff to look like that head.

There might be a bug that can make limbs go stiff....who knows.

Mouth and head shape should be possible.

Tail looks like a spear, maybe an unusually short spear could be used there.

hmmm, good challenge.

After shutting down his video series, he's yesterday's news.  In atrocious eyeliner, no less.  They'd get more traction giving Creature Creator access to the Numa Numa boy.  He's more topical, at this point, than sxephil.

And here's hoping they don't give access to Chris Crocker.  I hate to think what sort of creatures that messed up little twit might come up with.  :o

For those who complain silly celebs get it and not us: Don't get me wrong, I want the full SCC as much as the next rabid fan here, but...

Give SCC to fan = 1 fan happy, all the already-fans get to hear about it... and they were gonna get Spore anyway. Also he will tell all the people he's already talked to death about Spore, and who have already decided they don't give a monkeys.

Give SCC to celeb who doesn't deserve it = Tons of non-fans become potential fans because their idol is playing it so now it's cool, or at the very least they've heard about it. A few fans get peed off, but will ultimately buy the game anyway.

...

Yeah if I was EA marketing, I know where I'd drop those copies.
