Steve, I was wondering, are you going to eventually make your forum's look, look unique? Like the stuff in here: http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?board=34.0
If so it would be cool. Somehow it should be done. Just asking.
-
I am working on it. It is a ton of work to update the look of the forums, but they are being worked on!
-
Cool! I imagined it would be. Can't wait to see them, whenever you finish them, that is. But I can wait, I am patient.
-
I guess it pays to be patient.
-
So it's a few years late ... doing a few other things as well on the site, but this was the "big one".
-
8 years of waiting has paid off! So this what life is like in the future.
-
It'll take some time to get used to, but I'm glad we finally have a unique look.
-
I feel so un-mainstream.
-
Huh. It's like wearing a new pair of glasses.
-
Sweet.
-
Well, wearing a new pair of glasses made of orange.
-
I am intrigued by these new and shocking developments.
-
Ick! I liked the old forum layout. :(
-
Hey Steve, thank you for updating. Can you install a few theme options for us? It would be great if you could.
-
I will try. Updating the themes is actually a lot of work. Just making this one work correctly was several hours of work. But I'll see what I can do.
-
A thing!
Hurrah!
-
Awwwww yeeeeeee this is nice.
And cool ubergeekdom moved!
-
But what really matters.
Spore moved.
-
Into the abyss.
-
Ick! I liked the old forum layout. :(
There's always somebody :P
Just let the change sink in for a bit. Immediately demanding the old style back makes sense, since that's what we're used to and change is scary.
I thought the forum looked weird when I just saw the new style, but now, a few hours later, it's kind of grown on me.
Signatures and the user info next to posts seem to take up more space now, and some things are a bit harder to find, but overall it's a good change in my opinion.
EDIT: Oh hey, new smilies! They look pretty good!
-
The design was carefully selected and adjusted. I wanted something that was "different", went with the overall colors of the site (finding white, black, and orange is NOT easy) and yet was clean and simple to use.
Yeah it's a bit harsh compared to the old "default" site and layout, but that was sort of the point.
The main text area is still white and simple to read and more or less hasn't changed, it's just the headers and highlight colors that changed a bit, but's actually more or less the same site as before.
Did anyone notice/try the Facebook, G+ or Twitter buttons on the first post? Anyone want to give those a try? :)
-
So what else is on your list of things to do, Steve? Anything you can tell us about?
-

Seriously Orange? I think I am going blind from the Orange font on White background text. Same goes for White text on orange background.
-
It's like an orange creamsicle!
-
Of course, what kind of awful forum wouldn't have orange creamsicles?
Not one I'd want anything to do with.
-
I like orange. What color would you prefer?
Sure it's the orange making you go blind?
-
I like a wedsite that endorses my dutch pride.
-
Also my Tennessee pride.
-
Yeah More orange, to stick it to the Irish.
-
Seriously Orange? I think I am going blind from the Orange font on White background text. Same goes for White text on orange background.
I don't see any orange text on a white background.
Also, if you're being blinded, you may want to turn down your monitor's brightness :P
And I'm the most Dutch here, since I'm actually living in the country. So y'all got nothin' on me.
-
Wait, so is this all just to keep Celdur away?
-
Not Dutch enough.
EDIT: Fixed.
-
I'm Dutchier than you.
-

Black on Orange or something. Not white on orange. Alternatively white on a dark color like black, blue, etc.
its just hard to read those types of colors.
-
Where is there orange on white, though? Black and orange is mostly what I see. White on orange is also perfectly legible.
-
I can read it just fine. Unless you're really sensitive to the color orange, well that's unfortunate.
-
Full disclosure: I hate this new color scheme; it's awful, makes my eyes bleed, and I want to kill myself. But whatever, I can manage.
There is one problem that should be checked on, though. And I think resolving this will make things a lot better. The difference in color between posts isn't large enough. The Babylon theme that I used to use had a very distinct color difference between consecutive posts. It alternated from white to gray. This new color scheme does alternate, but the colors are a little too similar.
Do you think you could increase the difference between the colors of posts? It would make the forum much easier to read. Out on the individual section pages sticky topics are an orange color and are very easy to tell from non-stickies. A degree of difference like that would be great.
-
Same here.
Shade's way too similar.
As far as yellow is concerned, I've always had problems reading it so it's not much of an issue for me.
-
Take a screenshot of the home page and highlight/show what you want changed...
-

Hyperlinks (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orange_%28fruit%29) are all orange so if you highligh over a title you cannot read it.

I didn't notice but went back and looked and did a test tweet. It works.
Forum looks good, colors are fine, change is always takes time to adjust. Thanks for doing it and for moving Spore to the bottom.

Perhaps, it's not just changing the background color (which would be simple) but changing some graphic files as well. Also there isn't just one grey color to deal with, there are multiple greys that have to be calibrated -- the two different background greys, the quite grey, the header for the quote grey, and the background for the forum. If I go "too far" with one color it will mess up the others.
I'm also not seeing the same things people are talking about. The links are orange for me and easy to see both normal and when you rollover (the color doesn't change). I see differences it the post colors, and so forth. My monitor is extremely accurate so perhaps on other monitors the subtitle differences between the colors aren't coming through as much...

Right, you're not gonna do anything. Understood.
It looks alright, I'm sure I'll get used to it as I use it more.

Wow, that is harsh. I've been installing and updating a new theme for you to choose from this morning... But I guess I'll do nothing instead.
-
That's a bit babyish. >_>
Forgive me if I've gotten used to... nothing. It's just a little odd and sudden to see all these changes without really knowing what your goal is. Why the push all of a sudden to change things and get stuff going? What do you intend to do? Is this going to lead to anything? It'd be nice if you didn't just up and vanish again. We like it when you're here. And it's disappointing every time you disappear.
-
I've disappeared in the past because I've been busy and, quite frankly, changing/updating the site is extremely time-consuming/complex to do. I always wanted to update the site and modernize it, but it's extremely complex to move a site of this size to an updated system.
Also you guys might not realize it but running this site since it's inception has personally cost me more than $20k in hosting fees. Yeah the ads help a tiny bit, but what I make in the ads in one year is what I pay for a single month of hosting. So I came to a crossroads recently where I would either keep the site going on a newer, cheaper server or removing it completely.
I didn't want it to die so I am in the process of moving it to a newer, cheaper server and during this time I decided to update and change the site to a modern codebase (and lower the costs a bit, but it still isn't free to run this site). I hired some professorial developer friends of mine and we've managed to move the site over and I think it looks pretty good.
I will continue to update and change the site as much as I can, but doing something as "simple" as updating the layout costs me a couple hundred dollars in development fees as I can't do it all myself anymore (my programming skills are a bit rusty, I'm more of a manager at this point).
So everything you guys request I have to see if 1) I can do it myself, 2) how long it will take for me to do, 3) if I can't do it myself how much it will cost me to have it done. I am trying to add a new theme for you but I hit a wall and I'm waiting for my programmers to get back to me for now...
-
All your time and money is appreciated, really. This is a great place to hang out and chat. My hope is that after this we'll be seeing more of you! It's fun to talk with you and hear what you have to say. And more than a few of us are still holding out hope for another podcast, though just having you post is enough. We love Steve! And we miss him.
And if there's anything we can do to help, I know there are quite a few enterprising folks among us that would be happy to assist! :D
I know Didero had found something about a horizontal post separator in the forum code that made the site easier to navigate. He might be someone you want to have a chat with. But yeah, if you need anything from us, let us know. Just don't disappear again!! ;)
**EDIT**
Also has the timer for the "this post has been edited" text been reduced?
-
It's always good to have Steve around.
I would just like to say that for any that for any future changes or site downtime, it would be nice to let us know in advance. I was a bit concerned when the site went down with no advance warning.
-
Well we're having a really really strange server error right now, so I can't quite update the layout just yet. Basically the forum and the server are using different permissions -- which is a nightmare to fix.
For now I'm just going to finish the move (I have other files I need to move over), delete the other server, and then go back to this.
As for doing a show ... I'm not against doing another show. It's just gaming is so different now. It's hard to even do a show to talk about anything as things are so fragmented and segmented now there is no one topic I can really talk about in the world of gaming.
However ... I have just gotten directly involved with a new venture in which you might be hearing from me A LOT more ... a lot more. Like tons. Like "you are going to get sick of me" amounts. Like "there is another reason I'm getting the forum back up to speed"...

IT BEGIIIIINS!
-
Hey Steve, if you're around more and posting about your projects you can bet that we'll have your back.
Can't wait to see what you've gotten yourself into! ;D
-
Think WOW or LoL ... only bigger.
-
Oh god, I hope not TESO D:
-
Well that's certainly a thing. I guess we'll be waiting, then.
-
Elder Scrolls online?
-
Oh god, I hope not TESO D:
Anything but Transcription Error Scrolls Online!

Pat has a point. For a forum called Gaming Steve we sure don't see a lot of you Steve.
-
Well hey, at least he's here now.
-
It's kinda weird, actually.
-
I continue to be intrigued by these new and shocking developments.
And I am happy to see you back, Steve! It has been quite a while and I hope you are well.
-
....eSports.

Hey, so when I make a link...
Hey look, I'm a link to Google! (http://www.google.com)
The link isn't underlined. This makes it very hard to pick links out of large chunks of text. It can be remedied by adding an underline to the text of the formatted link, but that requires several more steps that the old system seemed to take care of automatically. Is there a box or something you can check behind the curtain to automatically include the underline on links? Or is there something else you can do?
Just wondering. It's a convenience thing and a nice little feature that we seem to have lost in the transition to the new template.
-
Hey, so uh....
What just happened here?
-
Fair question.
-
He restarted the server. Simple fix in the end. He was out of town when I first messaged but managed to get him the next day.
-
Hey, so uh....
What just happened here?
I know a couple of us were having the same problem, whenever we would try to open the site, it would try to open index.php.

I've got that problem happening constantly, still.

Probably gonna take a little bit for the tubes to update. It should stop for you soon.

Is everyone else getting this?
By "this" I mean the weird inverted color thingy in the home tab. :/
-
No. It looks like a picture of a person.
Did you have another window open or something? Sometimes elements from other tabs and pages can stick. Might be worth your while to clear out your temporary internet files so your browser re-downloads the button.
-
Well, this is odd. It seems even in a totally different system and IP, I'm still getting that weirdly colored home button to the left of the help tab.
Hmm...
Anyways, thanks for the assist Pat. :)
-
I get that too, but didn't notice it until you pointed it out.
Damnit, Yuu, now it'll bother me.
-
Sorry. >_>
-
What browser are both of you using?
I'm using Firefox, and I've got a normal Home button.
-
I'm using Firefox too, oddly enough.
-
I noticed it on Chrome, and Safari has the same thing.
-
Forum has been active lately.
How about all those totally unique, definitely-not-bot members we have now!? I can't wait for one of them to post something.
-
This is best advice I've had in a long time. Thank you my friend.

Bob Dylan (/ˈdɪlən/; born Robert Allen Zimmerman, May 24, 1941) is an American musician, singer-songwriter, artist, and writer. He has been an influential figure in popular music and culture for more than five decades. Much of his most celebrated work dates from the 1960s, when he was an informal chronicler and a seemingly reluctant figurehead of social unrest. A number of Dylan's early songs, such as "Blowin' in the Wind" and "The Times They Are a-Changin'", became anthems for the US civil rights and anti-war movements. Leaving behind his initial base in the culture of the folk music revival, Dylan's six-minute single "Like a Rolling Stone" radically altered the parameters of popular music in 1965. His recordings employing electric instruments attracted denunciation and criticism from others in the folk movement.

My uncle is his manager!
-
Your uncle must be loaded!
-
Yeah, they really are. I don't see him much because he's busy as hell even during the holidays. My cousins are all kind of... unique; in some good and bad ways. My aunt just loves her life though haha.
