This is going to be good. I'm not sure how they say the cell stage would last a full hour, they were moving up the scale pretty quick. Regardless, this game is full of awesome.

I was sad that they didn't use the creatures tail-spit attack when they were fighting those winged guys. I couldn't see if there was an option to.

hehe.. im famous  ;D

I will try to convert the video again this evening (CET). This damn converter-tool cut a little bit too much, so the video is about 1-2 minute shorter than i would like to have. (Is this right english?  :-\ )

The original is a dvd-video so i have to rip and cut this nice pictures. If somebody knows a good freeware tool he could post/pm this? (No i dont want to rip my shrek-dvd's ..  ;) )

For information about the video: Its a commented ingame-video, where the editor describe the features and gameplay elements. I will try to convert it with sound, but it would be in german (und probally not legall?)

And for the speculations that europe getting more/better info-materials. Last month was a offical preview-date in Munich, so all mags and some big gaming-sites published previews about spore.

(my gramatic is a genetic evolutioned english... so please excuse it ;) )

I LOVE- MUST GET SPORE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :o

Those cells in the background are huge! :D But if you think about it, why was there already grass on the planet? ??? Shouldn't all the life on the starting planet come from that meteor?

a planet gotta have an atmosphere, otherwise theres no chance a lifeform can evolve on it (at least, as far as i know)

Finally we see some eating of other creatures again.  I was worried that they might have changed it more than just removing blood, but it looks fine.

Can't wait until we get the entire video, and some sound.   Thanks Mudder!

The meteor probably killed everything that was living when it came down, or at least just about everything.
This is going to be good. I'm not sure how they say the cell stage would last a full hour, they were moving up the scale pretty quick. Regardless, this game is full of awesome.

You might have to go down a lot in order to get to the creature stage. There was some huge creatures in the background even when he was basically starting out.

Wow, there are some great scenes there.

Unfortunately, this is yet another video that stops short of actually showing anything of the Civilization phase, but it's still good stuff.

The Cell phase looks more interesting than I had imagined.

Post by: uj on February 28, 2008, 07:37:22 am
Awesome vid.

Things of the top of my head I want to say:

General:
-confirmed: opening sequence with a meteor crashing into your home planet
-confirmed: you find creature parts in the game world
-The editors are still awesome.

Cell:
-The cell phase looks more interesting then I thought it would be. I might play in regularly as a fast arcade game when I don't a lot of time and I want to play something light.
-The cell phase has a somewhat annoying flashing every time your creature eats something. I hope I can turn this off in the options.
-It still cracks me up that flow  (http://intihuatani.usc.edu/cloud/flowing/)was originally seen as a simple clone of the cell stage but then Maxis copied flow by making you grow and go down while facing tougher creatures and you can initially see the big creatures in the background.

Creature:
-Creatures can be enemies of each other as opposed to every hostile NPC being hostile to the PC but not hostile between themselves(we somewhat knew this from GDC 2005 but many things changed since then. a recent confirmation is great). This is an important dynamic that sets Spore's creature phase apart from many other RPG's.
-You can play as a scavenger, eating what other creatures have killed.
-You can try avoiding a predator by going near a different strong creature(eg: a zebra taking it's chances crossing a croc infested river to avoid a lion)
-Presumably this means NPC creatures are themselves players in the ecosystem that need to eat, survive and reproduce. This sets it apart from other games. eg. in WoW hostile creature usually just stand in one place or patrol the same are. When you go near them they attack you. Thats it. They don't have any kind of "life" to them. In Spore I can imagine myself flying to a planet on my ship and just watching creatures go about their business, or follow one creature and see it's story unfold as it tries to find food, avoid predators and find a mate.
-a part for ranged attacks other then "spit".
-status effects: @4:28 the winged creature on the far right gets some kind of "stun". It stops fighting and gets stars circling above it's head.
-You can fight with a pack but can only directly control your avatar creature.

Tribe:
-You can control your tribe like in an RTS.
-The dancing animations look good.

They didn't use the...tail-flame-ball attack...on the winged guys 'cause it was a different creature altogether, and it didn't have that thing on its hind end.  Apparently the user decided to change their creature before going into the stage.

Did any of you notice, when the players 6 legged creatures were ighting the winged bipeds, there was a fire in the background?  I believe that was the creature stage, therefore, there shouldn't be any 'player-made' fire...so, does this mean there are wildfires?!  That would be interesting!

Definitely looks cool, I guess my only reservation w/ the opening sequence is that I didn't really want to see my planet as a whole until I got far enough into civilization that my species would be able to see it, for that sense of discovery as I progress through the campaign.  But I imagine we might have to pick our planet in the beginning or something anyways.

that was so cool, especially the boss battle in the background between the two giant creatures, which i dont think were epics, but were as big as creatures can get for normal sizing

also it seems that with all the vids and screeens we have gotten, the planets are definately massive

Eurogamer: Do you always start on the same planet?
Lucy Bradshaw: No, you select one as you start. The geography, the flora and even the events are unique to each of them. What we are working on right now, is making some worlds you can start on easier than others. Because we expect to have so many different players, we want to offer that as an option.

Dangit, I didn't think of that.  Curses, Foiled Again!

Well, there have been a few (maybe one or two, I don't remember) that have stated that we DO start on the same planet (roughly the same, as in blue water and green grass and brown earth, but with different animals, vegetation and rock formations, and continental layout), so, AFAIK, yes, we do.

Edit:  And I stand corrected!  Thanks Noflunk!

Anyone care to translate that interview Noflunk posted into English for those who can't read it in German? PLEASE???

I love you  :-*.

Anyway this video is one of the best yet. It should put a sock in the mouth to those who insist the editor is most of the game. All I'm going to be thinking about when we get the creature editor is how much i want to play it in game.

That intro is amazingly an in game cinematic.  So whatever planet you choose, it will be shown in the opening cut scene.   ;D

Oh, and I watched it yet again, and looked at the smoke plume more closely.  If you look closely, you see little bits of debris falling to the ground, like you'd see from an eruption.

I think they can make cut scenes with unique content, like in The Sims, when you could see special events from a directed viewpont, but with your own Sims, and house area.

That epic creature looks scary. might ruin the game for you, great to have some challenge :D

This would be an excellent multiplayer game, tribe, civ, even creature.

The epic creature seems to be invisible too, my guess is that it is fog of war or something, but the other creatures dont go invisible... so i have no idea xD

Yes its getting invisible. This is probaly one of the special-features like the poison-"gun" (you could see this "shot" during the creature editor). So there could be some more features..

And i have to go now (real-life) so please .. select my message ;)

Maybe a glitch?  It could have been a 'stealth mode', as we saw in the noogle vid when he crept up on those quadrupeds, but how can an enormous creature go stealthy??

If it would be a glitch, it wouldn't become half-transparent, like a ghost, it would just disappear.

Seen the video.
The speaker is annoying, he's explaining the game like he's talking to a moron.

But there are some interesting informations:
You can test moves of the creature in the editor itself without having to go into the test area.
Dancing around the fire makes your creatures faster and to you can trade meat for buildings. Interestingly the dinosaur with the hearts hovering above the head is the chief of the tribe. (Though it's not stated if every chief has hearts...)

And the invisible monster is not a bug. :P

omg i was very amazed when that blue creature suddenly encounters a battle between those 2 huge others, it's like it wakes an exploration microbe :).

And then suddenly you are on a sandy coast where all kind of mayhem is going on, that's so entertaining and I can imagine getting sucked right into this,

I'd be very interested in downloading that preview avi as well, I can provide a mirror if needed on my server :P

I thought about that too, for some time. But somehow I figured that'd be rather silly, we'd be all out of DNA points quite fast.

Yeah, but I'm glad it is now confirmed.

There wasn't much of spoiler quality for me in it, even the comet in the beginning I already seen before.

Something I learned from the vid I was worried about: You can scale your creature, without having to spend credits on it.
It would really suck if you had to pay for scaling. It would mean bigger creatures were better than smaller ones to make sense. This would limit diversity as everyone would be trying to make big creatures in the end. I'm hoping Maxis can balance creatures in a more creative way. I want many paths of viable creatures each with a special play style instead of a single linear progression from sucky creature to good creature.

So here is how I imagine it: Big creatures are big and strong but slow and need lots of food. Small creatures are stealthy, need little food and can have larger packs since it takes less food to make more of themselves. Medium creatures are fast since they are neither too big and heavy nor have tiny feet. Additionally different parts could modify different abilities based on scaling. So a big spiting part will have a bonus to damage, a medium spitting part will have a bonus to range and a small spitting part will have a short cooldown. And then different scales unlock different kinds of abilities not available to others. You would need to be small or medium sized with big wings to fly. Nothing you can do will make your elephant sized creature fly.

In conclusion, scaling should be another choice for customizing your creature. There should not be any scale obviously better than another.

but in the video there was an epic creature, activating stealth-mode and then it walked away (what kinda surprised me anyway, first, that its in without any real confirmation before and second, that huge creature like that could do it, cause i thought that would be something a regular sized predator could do).
Title: Re: Magnificent new video, so good it is spoiler-ish even!

Stealth is not a part in and of itself, right? Probably just as handy no matter what size your creature is. Small creatures can avoid predators with it and large creatures can hunt with it. Medium creatures can do both, I guess.

But it's a freakin' awesome looking creature!

Those two-legged creatures in tribal seemed to glide and their legs just extended underneath them.  I thought they had fixed that a little when we saw that winged creature and the first epic, but it seems it's reverted back to unnatural movement...

There will always be hiccups,

especially in a procedurally generated game.

Thank maxis that we won't have to deal with realistic collision detection.

P.S. this isn't the finalized game

Unfortunately I think the walking animations have to do more with the movement speed number, and less with how the creature is actually built.  It could be for several reasons.  Perhaps they just couldn't get the animation system to work reliably with all the different configurations.  But the more plausible reason would be that they found that users would ultimately always make a fast moving creature, and it could always get in and out of every situation, ruining balance.  By putting in movement speed based on which feet you buy for it, you force the user to have to buy the movement speed, and end up making it more visible to the user at the same time.

This means that the legs end up moving weird because in order to look right with the movement speed, the legs have to move however fast or slow the creature's feet says it should move.  This creates the gliding walking animation.  And also, since there's several different sizes of the same creature, from babies to adults to epic, this movement speed needs to be adjusted on the fly, and can't rely on how the creature's legs are positioned, or those epic creatures would be beyond the clipping plane, and eating your corpse in under 3 seconds flat.  :o  Of course that's all speculation.

Yes it could just be that the game isn't finished yet...but I've seen this same walking animation since 2006...and if they haven't "fixed" it since then, I don't think it will be "fixed" because I think that's just how it works now.

well if it really is a problem that will not be fixed, the only option we have is to live with it and move on.

Um....no....its because its unfinished.  We had the same system of feet= movement speed score last year, and generally, the walking animations were crappy and unrealistic and 'gliding', but in recent times, the body movements are generally more lively and natural....so, the reason they're bodies don't seem to sway all that much is because the developers still be workin' on the game, not because of speed.  Granted, when all is said and done, the way those creatures walk may not be tremendously different, but it will definitely look better.

The creatures and the editors are the cornerstone of the game.  It's what they've shown the most, and they've been researching and working on the procedural animation systems before they even decided they could pull it off.  One would think they would have gotten it to work the way they wanted it to by now...and what I'm saying is that they HAVE gotten to work the way they want it, and that's what we see in this video.  Whether its because of the movement speed, or balancing issues, or that's just how that particular creature ended up moving, it doesn't matter...I'm pretty sure that what we see of the creature movements in this video is what we'll get in the final.  They've only got a few months before the creature editor gets released, and if they want to bring those creatures into the game, they better have the animation system working at 100%.

Go look through the movie again though.  The running animations still look pretty good.  The fishing animation works well.  The pole doesn't seem to go through his body too badly.   Dancing is a bit spastic, but it works.  Attacking animations look good.  Idle animations are good.  The stunned gargoyle like creature stumbles back and forth realistically.  And they even fall down rather well.

And if you look in the background right about the time the blue guy collects the skeleton and starts to scavenge the big carcass...it looks like there's a floating creature floating across the ground.  It could be that its legs are really small and we can't see them, but it might be "flying" around.  That animation looked pretty good too, from what little I saw of it.

I don't see anything wrong with having a fictional creature walk a little odd, because it is not like we have a base to compare that creature to here. How am I supposed to know how some of these things are supposed to walk like.

This would be an excellent multiplayer game, tribe, civ, even creature.

The epic creature seems to be invisible too, my guess is that it is fog of war or something, but the other creatures dont go invisible... so i have no idea xD

I think that is normal creature not epic. Epic creatures are biger.

I believe that we could create those giants with the editor, but not that we could control them? It would look very funky when some of those comic-godzillas would dance around a small campfire. I think that the xxl-creatures are more a gameplay element or something else. It would be boring if there are no earnestly enemies in the creature/.. (what is the 3rd phase called in english?)

Well we can speculate this game to the death I feel everybody is turning this game into "nothing is what it seems type deal" Not that I'm hating, to be honest Will Wright has achieved his goal in creating this game as the fact that your imagination is truly what spore is. It's your own prospective of the game like i remember one topic about a pic that was a rocket then someone said no it's a ship like a rocket or this or that. Yeah it can be anything you want it to be! it's your imagination lol anyway glad to see Will Wright achieved his goal and the game isn't even out yet!

no i think its the same size scale with epics as with normal creatures, so with normal you can go from the size of a mouse to an elephant, so with epics there can be smaller epics, all the way up to the massive planet shaker epics

One thing I noticed is that creatures go through each other, unlike the original 2005 vid where they didn't, and often got stuck on each other. I like the old way better because then it was more realistic.

Those creatures weren't epic at all. there is only one epic on the planet so how can two of them be fighting. the epic creaures are only in the city stage anyways because thats the only time you can actually kill them. As what has been said before in the creature stage you are not the highest on the food chain so they make bigger and stronger creatures, they are not epic. there could be different levels of epic creatures to correspond to your scale. In the creature scale anything the size of a tree is friggin huge! But in the civ stage you are so zoomed out that anything smaller than godzilla would be insignificant

The epic creatures are bigger than cities, and again there is only one.

You are right. You have many sizes of creatures in this game.

This is strange logic that every creature that is big must be epic.

You have creatures from size of mouse to size of elephant in this game, and they are not epic.

Epic must be something special.

What the hell?  Is there some ability that makes you invisible?  As soon as it goes sort of transparent it walks off with a shroud of mist around its feet.

It's stealth. Back in the old days we had discussions whether the ability should be connected to your size. But I guess this proves that it's not!  :D

BTW we have seen this same thing in an older picture (http://spore.strategyplanet.gamespy.com/hotcold/explorationblogs/SpaceOddity/spaceoddity.html?subaction=showfull&id=1190372313&archive=&start_from=&ucat=&) (the last one in particular). I thought at the time it was due to the haziness of the distance, but now I'm not so sure anymore. :)

I think he means the text *pauses* that happen occasionally...  the ones with explanations as far as I read.

I figure they only happen when you encounter something new... or something important happens.  Finding the skeleton pieces is an *important* event, I would think.  And I'd personally like to know what they unlock as I encounter them.

All of that going under the assumption that I am interpreting his meaning that way..   ;D

It looks like the jumpy/glidey thing is true. Just after the big creature kills the other and the creature we're watching goes to scavenge the corpse, in the background on the left hand side just after the dead creatures foot you see a creature doing a double jump and gliding kirby style

Translation of the introduction and the cell phase:

"Attention: Quick question: Who is that?
Well, not the woman on the left. That's Jeanette Biedermann, but she's unimportant at the moment. I mean the man with the funny haircut and the ... umm ... smart facial expression. I'll give you a hint: He invented two big game series: Namely Sim City and the Sims. You guessed it, right? Sure, that spectacle wearer is Will Wright in his capacity as famous developer and visionary, and his newest creation is called "Spore"!.
In this evolution simulator you're playing the life of a self-made life-form, namely in five phases: Cell, creature, tribal, civilisation and space.
For the first three parts, I'll show you some moving pictures. Of course it starts with the cell phase.
Interestingly, it starts where Spore will end later: in space! Namely with a comet. The interstellar chunk of ice flies past the sun and is on target for a planet. Why? Because the comet sows life, namely micro organisms, which will cavort and spread on the target planet from now on.
Your first fosterling will emerge from a part of the celestial body too. This one you may tinker in an editor before. How that works, I'll show you soon. I decided for a ... black thing with bug eyes here. With my amoeba, I'm paddling through the primordial ooze now and have to do one thing above all: eating. Game-play wise it reminds a little bit of pacman: My beastie munches green lumps and gets gradually fatter and bigger. This way I'm also piling DNA points up, which I'll spend for upgrades later.
Bigger beasties I should avoid at all costs, otherwise my amoeba will be become prey itself, such as this buddy, who's fate is shown in a short sequence. This both makes sense and is useful, because he loses my first genetic component, which I grab immediately. Great! Now I can arm my protozoa with spikes.
So I'm opening the editor, in which I created my protozoa before. Here I'm trading DNA points for upgrades, but also I'm changing the look of my fosterling. Let's see... The tail fin will be relocated this way, a little bit enlarged. Moreover this beastie is too plump and too black for me. Thus changing width and colour, best into an umm ... eye-friendly ... magenta. Well now a spike will be mounted, so that I can attack and eat other amoebas. Eating vegetarian all the time is boring too. Finally some new eyes and a mouth, otherwise it couldn't eat.
And finally my new protozoa hatches from the egg and can sting other animals. For that, skill is needed, because I have to aim precisely. Then that's no problem anymore, but uh... I still have to watch out for bigger beasties, but they shall just wait and see! My little beastie will continue feeding and growing and sometime it'll take over the world."

Translation of the creature and tribal part coming soon. :P

Post it anyway, the translation is pretty crappy. It's got places where it doesn't even translate.
Umm, ... ok...
Here is it then:

"The next step to world domination is the creature phase, in which my clearly bigger protozoa from the primordial ooze crawls to land. Then I upgrade it into a real life-form in the editor first. For this I change the body shape, which is very simple. When I click a vertebra, I can drag the sceleton into position. When I turn the mouse-wheel, the selected part will become thicker or thinner. After that, I add some legs, mouth and the eyes. Finally arranging some decoration spikes on the back and - yes, oh yeah! The critter needs arms too, somehow.
Surely the beastie is especially proud of its poison spit gland on its tail, which I have to test right now. Besides the given components like mouthes and eyes, Spore doesn't set creative boundaries. My animal looks, as I want it to be, so for example like this too: With this ... six-legged antlered dinosaur I'm going on exploration tour. The goal of the creature phase is the same like the cell's one: eating, getting larger, upgrading animal.
My critter gains new body parts by eating sceletons. Furthermore it can eat the flesh of dead animals.
If my creature is getting attacked sometime, it can blurt out a mating call, so that conspecifics come to the rescue. While battling these demon-like critters, I even get some bonus DNA-points, which I can invest in new body parts. With those I can for example make my creature stronger or improve its dancing skill. So the creature phase equals an action role-playing game, in which I upgrade my hero bit by bit. At the same time, my life-form gets smarter and smarter. Finally it has to build a first tribe together with its fellows.
The development of my tribe starts with a hut village together with a fire and a few occupants. At first they lumber around a bit, but this will change soon. The happy smileysaur with the pink hearts floating above its head is my chieftain by the way.
Now I command his subordinates like in a real-time-strategy game: I select them via frame and give them goals. Here I let them dance around the fire. Not only does that look funny, but it's also beneficial. Namely is makes the beasties faster for a short time. By the way: Spore adjusts the animations to the body-form of the creatures: Of course such a bipedal smileysaur dances entirely differently than a ... umm, lets say, an eight-legged carnivore Teewurst (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teewurst).
However the main goal of my tribe is to gather food again. And this works best while hunting. So my dinosaurs are biting some of these green eye-crawlers to get their meat. Then they return the meat to the village. It later is used as currency for new huts.
And thus my critters are gathering more and more until one day they'll rule the wor- Damn! What's that?! Anyway it's something big with appetite for smileysaurs. Oh man, this location doesn't seem to be safe now... Oh no, and the giant thing can make itself invisible too. Oh well, the beast seems to eat my entire tribe, only the chieftain survives. This way hunting won't be successfull. I have to get food otherwise.
Now my leader could gather berries, but, honestly, that would be kinda boring. So I invest the gathered food in a new fishing hut. The arsenals are too expensive ... yet.
Thus my leader lonely goes to the beach and catches fish. But because that would be a too sad ending for this video, I'm going to tell you about the two other phases, from which EA didn't let us record a video.
After you took over enough other tribal villages in the tribal phase, your creatures will build a city. From there they conquer the world through wars, trades or diplomacy. And the one who unites the whole world, finally can build a space ship, explore the galaxy and meet other races in the last and endless phase of Spore."

While we are doing translations, does anyone have a translation of the german interview with Lucy Bradshaw? I know SpaceOddity has an excerpt on her blog but that is a short excerpt for such a long interview. Or, does anyone have any additional translated excerpts of that article on things we didn't know before the article was published. I know spaceoddity mentioned natural disasters in regards to that article in another thread and it wasn't mentioned in her blog.
