Title: Guild Wars 2
Post by: WinterSnowblind on March 20, 2007, 04:05:30 pm
Okay, there's been rumours floating around for the past few weeks, but I thought I'd post this now as it's finally been confirmed, along with the final expansion for the original game that will tie up all the loose ends and build up into the sequel.  By the sounds of it, the sequel has lost a lot of the Guild Wars spirit, but on the other hand will almost definetely draw in new players and should put a little more replayability into the PVE.

Guild Wars 2 features:
- Takes place hundreds of years in the future, with multiple playable races.

- Predominately open worlds, hundreds of people in the same area, and choices that the population as a whole change the quest structure. They gave an example of choosing to rally against a dragon or not. Those that help, gain loot and xp. If the dragon isnt driven away, another 'quest' may trigger, leaving more options for the population.

- There will be no more level cap for PVE, allowing characters to reach level 100+, while PVP characters will still stay on an even playing field.

- Sidekicks simlar to CoH, allowing powers to seep from a high level character to a friendly lower level char.

- 'Click to move' will be abandonned in favor of a more freedom-rich control scheme, including 'jumping, swimming, and sliding'

- Destructable environments

- no real world limitations to servers. you pick a 'world', but can switch between the realms.

- World vs World combat sounds to be a massive scale capture the flag with no minimum or maximum party size. Big-ass raids that can supposedly take place for weeks on end. At the end, the 'world' will be reset, and it will start again it seems.

- Companions: NPC like heros can join you, and dont count towards your party. Not using this feature lets you be mroe powerful.

- No monthly fee

Hmmm, I was a little disappointed when I got to level 20 in the first game, and I wasn't much of a PvP'er. Hmmm I might have to keep my eye one this one.

call me an pessimist but i like the way GW works now :-\ i wont judge it until i have tried it, but old GW sounds more fun/shrug oh well as long as they don't change the PVP aspect to much i will probably be ok with it, but it sure sounds like just another "MMO"

Theres one thing that caught my interest and that is "Destructable enviroments". Now will this be like, there are 10 pesants defending a hut, when you kill them the hut will automaticly get trashed. OR when you strike a small tree with your swords hard enough it will fall over. When you cast a firebolt at a hut it will turn into a big torch.

If alternative 2 is the one, then this sounds intresting.

Anyone recognise the girl?  Seems like she's one of the new heroes in Guild Wars: Eye of the North.
Pretty awesome, but I was hoping she was going to be the Fiery Destroyer, like she was in the Beta.

Ah, I wonder where she disappeared after the Searing.

Anyways, you might be more informed on this but is GW: EotN a stand alone like the others or are they finally coming out with their first expanion?

This is the final "expansion" before GW2, it continues the story from Prophecies (original game) and have level 20 content ONLY, no newbies allowed.

I just picked up Nightfall and I saw in the box (got the collectors edition) they had all kinds of stuff about GW2.

Also if you pick up the May issue of Computer Gaming World you get this cute little pet in GW so I need to pick up the mag!

Man that would be great a WoW game with no cost!

Some of NCsoft's games look really good like Dungeon Runner and Aion and even Xsteel  I would like to try out Tablua Rasa too!

The monument feature is motivating me to play a bit more. And you still have to pay for your account key, so remember that it's not completely "no pay". But, no monthly fee so it's a one time money deal. For some reason I'd always enjoy a crafting system but it's not real easy to balance that out.

This is news about the first game, but I thought I'd post it here, rather than make a brand new topic for it.
Anyone with Factions should really log-on today, as it's the return of the Dragon Festival, from noon PST onwards!

Quote from: Guild Wars
To commemorate the bravery of the citizens of Cantha last year in driving back the demons who threatened to ruin the Dragon Festival, this year's festival will include dramatic reenactments of those events, and all are invited to participate in these little dramas. Whether it's facing off against hordes of Naga and Yeti driven mad by papier-mâché demons, clearing these same "demonic" forces from a bandit camp, or accepting the calls-to-arms from Captain Rujiyo when more "demons" attack various towns across the island, participants will find numerous ways to join in the fun.

All the usual mini-games will be re-opened during this festival, including the Rollerbettle racing, the Dragon Arena and the Rings of Fortune, where you can earn Victory Tokens to cash in for special prizes.  There's also new quests and missions through-out the weekend and during the finally, if you have 250 tokens, you will be awarded a special Demon Hat.  :)

In my opinion, this is why Guild Wars is so great, we always get big events like this, where as most big MMO's where you have to pay monthly fee's dont, or if they do, much more rarley.  I've not been playing GW mcuh lately, but I'm going on now just for this.

Winter Snowblind usually, but it depends which character I'm using.  I'm mostly on the International districts.

And wow, those bonus missions they're doing for this event are really hard.  Only having four people per group doesn't help either.  Seems very few people have been able to finish them, and you get a very crappy reward if you actually can.  Rest of the event has been great though.  :)

Well the Festival is over now.  With the exception of people spawn camping the presents, it was a pretty good event.  Not quite as cool as some of the previous ones, but I guess the developers are pretty busy at the moment.  And I don't want to give away any secrets here, but has anyone realised how badly the victory tokens can be abused?  For simply competing those four festival quests, you can get 240 tokens.  That's just under five platinum.  I made over 50k yesterday alone, and I've seen numerous characters going around with names like "Vicki Tokens" and "Sellin Tokens".

A little odd that the developers would miss something so painfully obvious.  Oh well, I'm off to buy some 75k armour.   ;D

http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Special_event

The four big holiday events they hold every year are the Canthan New Year, the Dragon Festival, Halloween and Wintersday.  They tend to not announce them until very close to when they start though, so it's worth paying attention.  They also have a different special Weekend every week.  Usually things like double dye drops, or double experience for capping skills.

Just go out into the areas and pick up every last piece of crap you can find.  Selling it all will make you quite a bit of money, especially in later areas.  Later on you'll be able to buy salvage kits so you can break those items down into materials to sell, and if you can find some decent materials or rare runes, you'll start making a lot of money very quickly.

Good advice. More questions? What campaign will level you the quickest and is the most fun IYO, Nightfall? Factions? Prophecies?
Title: Guild Wars 2
Post by: Yossitaru on July 20, 2007, 10:07:42 am
Fastest leveling is in Factions, due to the high EXP rewards in the starter quests. Fastest cash is said to be Nightfall because the gold rewards are comparatively high.

As far as most fun, that really varies from person to person. Personally, I liked Prophecies the best. Factions is generally the least popular campaign, but I have met several people who said they liked it the best.

What areas have you been trying this in?  Even just playing through the quests in some of the later areas should get you some fairly decent loot, worth a couple hundred gold each.  The odd Purple or Gold items really help, as they often have runes or upgrades that can be sold for a lot.

If you're really desperate, you could try farming some Green weapons.  In Factions and Nightfall almost every Boss can drop a Green weapon, some of them are very close to outposts, and you can simply go in and out killing the boss until he drops it.  If you can find a decent Sword or something, then you have a good 10-15k right there.

When I need more money, I tend to create new characters and just play through all of the missions with them.  If you picking up everything along the way, you should have a lot of money by the end, even if you're only selling junk.

Good advice. More questions? What campaign will level you the quickest and is the most fun IYO, Nightfall? Factions? Prophecies?

Factions gives you a ridiculous amount of experience for doing absolutely nothing.  In Prophecies you'll notice that even quests towards the end of the game only give you 250-500 experience points.  Factions on the other hand gives you 5000 points for doing trivial quests, such as going right outside and talking to someone.

This is why Eye of the North is intended for level 20's only.  So they can skip the noob areas that rushed you to level 20.  :)

I find it difficult to gain money, as well. My only source of income in the game was going to Port Sledge and running the chests, now since they added a key system... that pretty much made me poor.
Title: Guild Wars 2
Post by: Yossitaru on July 26, 2007, 10:04:39 pm
Well, there are two lesser known ways of making money.

First, if you have Nightfall, there are several "treasure chests" that rare items as well as a tidy sum of gold. These chests require no keys, but can only be opened once, but they do "refill". The mechanics behind their refilling are not fully understood, but you can claim them all again after roughly a month's time of average time spent playing, however, the longer you wait between pick ups, the greater amount of gold and the rarer the item is. Further details at Guild Wiki's Treasure Article (http://gw.gamewikis.org/wiki/Treasure).

Second, there is going back through missions in Hard Mode. On top of the rewards you gain from finishing the mission again as if it was the first time, there is the better items the enemies drop due to the higher difficulty level.

Sure, they may not be as good as an average farming trip, but they are a lot more fun. Peronally, I'm doing what I can to scrape together another 70 platinum for capture signets to finish my Elite Skill collection. I sure hope Eye of the North will have more ways to make money. Also, I wish Polymock was Asura Chess again, rather than "Pokemon on Steroids".

It's Vekk.

And according the Guild Wiki article (http://gw.gamewikis.org/wiki/Polymock) for Polymock, you turn into one of three monsters and battle a team of three other monsters... a bit unfortunate that all three new mini-games are fighting style games now.

Is English your primary language? I hope not.

Anyway, the two races are the Norn (vikings), and the Asura (cool, mammalian symbiots), but you won't be able to play them 'til 2009, which is the estimated release date of this wonderful game.

Here's some basic information, and detailed information can be found at GuildWiki's entry for Guild Wars: Nightfall (http://gw.gamewikis.org/wiki/Guild_Wars_Nightfall)

Nightfall has a fairly interesting story about the returning of the outcast sixth God of Tyria. The setting of Elona is based on North African environments. (Think Egypt)

The year is 1275 Dynastic Reckoning (Elonian Calender), 1585 Canthan Calender (from Factions), 1075 After Exodus on the Mouvelian Calender (from the Continent Tyria from Prophocies). It is three years after the twin events of Prophocies and Factions.

(Yes, the world is named Tyria and the continent from Prophocies is also called Tyria.)

It introduces heroes, customizable and "permanent" henchmen that can go with you everywhere. As opposed to traditional henchmen who have preset equipment and skills, you have full control over what the heroes have, aside from their primary class.

Aside from the core classes (Elementalist, Monk, Necromancer, Mesmer, Ranger and Warrior) you can also choose from Paragon (http://gw.gamewikis.org/wiki/Paragon) and Dervish (http://gw.gamewikis.org/wiki/Image:Dervish-icon-small.png).

Well, if you were asking on what makes it stand out from the other two chapters, that's pretty much it. Part of the reason of not changing things a whole lot probably has to do with that it has to accommodate both new characters and old characters coming from other continents.

Eye of the North should bring about some nice things, since it is meant for high level characters only, so it will have things specifically for people who know what they're doing and they won't have much of anything in place for novices.

Nightfall easily has the best story and it's probably the longest game.  It has about the same amount of missions as Prophecies, but there's a lot more primary quests and they're a lot longer and more complex than just "Go here for the next mission".

And the Heroes alone make Nightfall worth buying.  Trying to play the game just with random players can be very difficult if you can't find any good groups, and most of the time heroes will be better than most of the players you see out there.  If nothing else, you can simply use them as stand ins when you can't find enough people for a mission.  I'm sure everyone knows how painful it can be waiting for a Monk to come along and join up with you.  Dunkoro means no more waiting around.   :)

Though it's also worth noting that Eye of the North will be adding new heroes and a lot of new PVE content as well.

I've been playing the sneak peak weekend, and loving it so far.  The whole thing feels much higher quality than any of the previous games.  The story, characters and cut-scenes are much better, there's a lot of fun mini-games where you earn decent equipment, the quests give you decent rewards and even the missions are a lot more enjoyable.  I guess this is what we get when they don't have to worry about thinking up new professions, balance new skills and making more noob areas.

I got a brand new mountain eagle pet and my Warrior is wearing a freaking crown.   :o

My one complaint with Eye of the North is the Hall of Monuments.  They've been hyping this up as the bridge between GW1 and 2, and basically, it's garbage.  There is a long time before GW2 is supposed to come out, so hopefully they decide to fix things up here a little before that happens.

-Mini-pets are customised after you put them in..  which is fair enough to prevent you giving them to all your friends, but it makes them worthless and unusable by anyone besides that character.

-Heroes can only be recorded if you buy new armour for them.

-It only records PVP titles, no cartographer or protector titles or anything like that.

-Only the new green weapons from GW:EN can be recorded, all of your previous greens and golds are meaningless.

-When you record your armour sets, it doesn't actually display your armour set, it shows an armour set from the same crafter, but a different proffession.  For example, my Warrior recorded his 15k knights armour from Marhans Grotto, but instead it displays the Elementalist and Mesmer armour from the same area.

I can't say for the others, but right now, the armor statuettes are only placeholders right now. I do agree with you that the PvE titles should be recorded in that one monument though, as it is, I can't put anything on it... :'(

Well I pretty much did what I can do. I tried going west toward Umbral Grotto but my assumptions of that area being blocked were true. I'm pretty sure the Charr area is blocked as well. All the mini-missions are completed so far and I could only get two tapestries for my monument. Got some cool drops and some neat skills too. Nice preview overall though, I liked it. ;D

Glacial Gauntlets and my crown.   :)

I also tried one of the dungeons, which was a lot of fun.  Very Zelda like, you have to fight through multiple floors with actual puzzles.  The one I did involved activating certain switches to open up doors in other parts of the dungeon, which would open up more passages usually with more switches, etc.  You can even find maps to highlight areas of interest and once you beat the boss at the end you get a big chest, containing rare items.  Very cool.   :)

I loved Guild Wars before, but Eye of the North still seems to be a massive improvement.

I loved the dungeons too, I went through all three that are available so far. They also made me think of Zelda for some reason, the dungeon music kept playing through my head. :D

I can't wait to get to Charr Homelands and the dungeons that are larger than 5 levels.

I did two of them, but I just managed to rack up over 10k with just one of my characters alone. I hope this isn't just a thing AN is doing for the event, I want more of these drops to keep on coming. ;D

Well, considering the dungeons are replacing missions this time around, I don't see why the dungeon chests wouldn't continue to have great drops, since these things are significantly more difficult than missions.

Also, I got my copy of the game today (Game Stop got them in early for some reason) and it kind of sucks that we can't use our Eye skills or heroes in the mean time. Sure, the skills might be unfair in PvP, but since when did PvE have to be fair to the monsters? :P ::)

Neither can you travel anywhere to the new places, right?

I'd assume that even if the game is on shelves right now, you wouldn't be able to do anything until it goes live.

Well, there was a bug before that allowed people to go back for a short time, but since they physically took the places off the map, you can't even try. But the heroes and skills, I was just hoping for a little bonus that would hold us over until it's all up tomorrow.

Well, they've readded the towns and outposts to the map (The Eye is no longer considered a city for some reason) but you still can't go there.

Eye of the North is now officially Live.   ;D

And you can buy the soundtrack from Direct Song.  http://www.directsong.com/
The music previews are great, cause you hear part of the song you don't on the title screen.  It's a little similar to the Oblivion theme, but still very beautiful.

Edit:  Since I was complaining about the Hall of Monuments before, I think it's worth pointing out that they've been significantly improved in the final game.  The Hall of Honour now displays YOUR armour, including whatever colours you may have it dyed, and the Hall of Valour can display PVE titles.  You even get little monuments for just finishing each of the campaigns.   :)

Hm, just a stylized two like a dragon... that's a tad disappointing. But a glimpse "soon soon" that's exciting.

I hope Pogahn Passage appears soon as a Zaishen Mission. It's the last mission I need in Hard Mode to be a Legendary Guardian!

It's been a while since the Arena Net Blog (http://www.arena.net/blog/) has launched and they've been talking a lot about the dynamic events system. I'm really rather excited for this to become a reality, and the ability to change the world will hopefully make the game feel a lot more alive.

I'm also liking what I hear about event rewards.

In the old GW, you had to complete a certain quest if you want to get a certain reward or drop. From the sounds of it, you don't have to wait for or participate for a certain even to get a drop you really want. It sounds like you might be able to buy a green weapon from a special merchant than from randomly getting it from a certain boss.

After a short while without any info at all, they've finally unveiled the traits system (http://www.guildwars2.com/en/the-game/combat/traits-overview/). Looks like they're following in Diablo's ideas with being able to customize the way your skills work, and each set is tailored to the profession you choose.

They also revealed the warrior profession (http://www.guildwars2.com/en/the-game/professions/warrior/), skill chain stacks sound convenient.

Spoiler Alert: War in Kryta concerns post Prophecies and Eye of the North spoilers.

Also, instead of digging up the GW1 thread, I'll just mention it here. The Guild Wars Beyond stuff is getting pretty big, currently the focus is on the War In Kryta (http://www.guildwars.com/warinkryta/), with the Shining Blade fighting the White Mantle to reclaim the country.

More edits; for only those who really care anymore.

The War in Kryta is over, and the final battle was truly intense. But there's more to come; Evennia, Thackeray and Langmar are all missing in action!

And on the other side of the 250 year gap, Guild Wars 2 will be reworking the whole concept of team builds, throwing out the dedicated healing class, and the tried and true trinity of "Tank-Healer-DPS" all together. Also, no death penalty. Check it. (http://www.guildwars2.com/en/the-game/combat/healing-death/)

Why do all big-budget MMO's have uggly cartoony freaks as a playable race? It just ruins the whole "stylized art-direction" they talked about. I'd like to hear more about the actual mechanics for this "player-affecting-the-world" thing, I am to cynical to expect it to be as awesome as they try to make it sound yet.

Read up on their blog. (http://www.arena.net/blog/) I warn you, there is a lot of reading. But it all explains better about how their whole system will work. Hopefully when they demo it at gamescom, people will get a better impression. But the best impression will be yet to come until it's released, and even beyond release.

I know two people. One of them is working on the game, I am hoping to get a beta from him when it becomes beta time. The 2nd person I know go a chance to play the game, because of nondisclosure agreement, all she could say is that she liked it. Hopefully I can see it in action at PAX this year. Needless to say I am excited for the game.

This is concerning Huckbuck's question.

Quote
Some players out there did have questions about the extent to which players’ actions have a lasting effect on the world around them. For example, when Ree says in the video that players can permanently change their world, she’s talking about making a permanent impact on a player’s personal story, which is reflected in instances, particularly a player’s home instance.

You know what? Lead Designers Eric Flannum and Colin Johanson are really good at explaining stuff like this. Let’s ask them!

Eric: Thanks, Dave. Yeah, in the video Ree is speaking about the player’s personal story, whereas Colin is talking about dynamic events.  We like to think of personal story choices being permanent and dynamic event choices being persistent. The difference being persistent choices will remain until something comes along and changes them. So for instance, in the personal story you may choose to let an NPC die, that NPC is likely to be an important story NPC that the player feels some attachment to, their death will be permanent and will have repercussions on the characters story. This would be reflected in instances. In the persistent world a dynamic event might result in an NPC being killed. This will be a more generic NPC like a merchant or a soldier who will likely be replaced once some other event takes place.

Colin: Right, when Ree refers to, “players will kill a boss and they won’t re-spawn 10 minutes later,” she is saying when playing through your personal story line if you kill a boss, that boss will stay dead and your personal story will reflect this. It’s not really physically possible to make each dynamic event permanent, because the game needs enough content for everyone to play, and we don’t have 10,000 people making content for Guild Wars 2, event chains need to cycle and events need to repeat to ensure players have enough to do in the persistent game world. Our goal with events is to ensure that when an event ends, you feel like it actually has some sort of outcome on the game world for all players, if even for a short period of time, where traditional MMO quest in persistent areas generally have no affect on the world.
Title: Re: Guild Wars 2
Post by: ilikesanta on August 14, 2010, 04:32:18 pm
I'm curious how this works when your teaming up with different people every-time you play, perhaps you let the NPC die but the another guy let him live?
Title: Re: Guild Wars 2
Post by: gec05 on August 14, 2010, 04:41:33 pm
I think the best answer for that is when you both play a personal instance (that neither one has played yet), you both share the consequences of the choices you make. In the persistent areas, that wouldn't matter since such areas have no real effect on your character's personal story from what I can see.

But in the case if you already played that instance and already beat it, and you are just tagging along helping someone who hasn't played that instance. You are just reliving the experience and nothing that occurs will change yours since it's already written. You may even alter the other person's story and witness a different result occur for them, but not you personally.
Title: Re: Guild Wars 2
Post by: Yossitaru on August 14, 2010, 08:34:15 pm
Actually, I think it works on a "host" system. Only the player who allowed the others into the instance will have the results effect their story. The others will still have that part of the story blank in their home instance.

The primary reason I see this view for is that personal stories can be vastly different from each other. A simple example would be a charr player tagging along for a human player's story, they could be doing something the other would never see as a charr. A more complex example is that personal stories can be vastly different in terms of events as well, they gave an example that there are ways through the story where you never fight the elder dragon in the end. I'm pretty sure one of the blog entries had a quote on how participating in others' personal story will NEVER influence your own. I'll go looking for the quote and associated post later.
Title: Re: Guild Wars 2
Post by: gec05 on August 15, 2010, 05:57:15 pm
That could be a more likely condition. But what if invited friends try to mess up the host's story.

Say if it involved protecting an story-driven NPC. What if the guest players refuse to help, or maybe even help that NPC die against the host's wishes? Of course this is an unlikely scenario and would be messed up even for complete strangers (especially if they are friends) to try to sabotage another's personal story.
Title: Re: Guild Wars 2
Post by: Huckbuck on August 16, 2010, 02:11:22 am
Oh so here we go with instances... As I thought, not as good as it sounded. The ultimate version of a system like this would actually let me change the fate of the server forever, not just what I will experience in future instances.

The other event stuff sounds like Public Quests from Warhammer but with more effort put into them.
Title: Re: Guild Wars 2
Post by: gec05 on August 16, 2010, 02:03:45 pm
But I think changing the fate of the server would be dangerous, say if someone decides to screw everything up and grief all the other players.
Title: Re: Guild Wars 2
Post by: Yossitaru on August 16, 2010, 07:52:31 pm
Well, from what I understand, the instanced personal story things are only the big story things. The status of NPCS (such as Logan Thackeray and his Guild, Destiny's Edge or the elder dragons [Personally, I'm looking forward to seeing Dougal Keene]), events (such as you joining the Order of Whispers or splinter groups) and other such things would be what is changed and mostly recognized in the instances.

That's not to say you won't be recognized in the persistent areas for your choices in the personal instances. And almost anything you do in the persistent world will have some effect to change the world at large. Sure, not a forever permanent change, but they are claiming long and branching event chains, so there's bound to be long and mutually exclusive states the world can be in, all thanks to your actions.
Title: Re: Guild Wars 2
Post by: sporelord on August 17, 2010, 07:18:22 am
Indeed the instanced "Story events" are the personal ones, which are only for you...However the persistent world quests and such like affect EVERYONE. They are also very long i imagine over several days if not weeks, rather than an hour or so.

You could also buy the bonus mission pack, which has a lot of lore you might be interested in. You can only buy it inside the game itself. And that's pretty much all you really need.

All the other stuff they have for purchase within the in-game store. Most of which is a bunch of costumes, knick-knacks and stuff to boost your PvP gear and skills. But none of it is really important unless you're desperate to have all the skills ready for you in PvP. But you still have to hunt those skills for your PvE character.

I think the Trilogy pack is GOTY, so you don't necessarily need the GOTY upgrade. If it's Trilogy (U.S.) (http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Guild_Wars_Trilogy) or Complete (E.U.) (http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Guild_Wars:_The_Complete_Collection), then it'll have the GOTY goodies included.

This one, so good, I don't need to spend the extra money.

This also raises the question, the bonus and EN products will work with the steam version, right?
Title: Re: Guild Wars 2

Ultimately, you'll be attaching those to the game account, which is separate from your Steam account, so yes, all the products will work with it.

So I stopped at GameStop and decided to ask about possible Special Edition pre-orders. Apparently by their system, the game is set to release this November 3rd. I was really skeptical about that. They guy said it might be a target release date for the game but it could still change. I dunno.

I was pretty certain it would be early 2011 based on ArenaNet's announcements. I call BS, might just be a placeholder.
Title: Re: Guild Wars 2
Post by: Yossitaru on October 05, 2010, 05:02:20 pm
Old placeholder at that. I think the last "solid" date they actually put on the beta for the game was roughly around that time. As it is now, we're looking at maybe a beta late 2010/early 2011 and an actual release mid-to-late 2011.

Interesting Tool (http://hom.guildwars2.com/#page=main&details=kJIAAY33%2FPD47%2F%2FzngfCAoiAAQAAAAAAPEMIAAAAAAA&todo=AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA). And with the things I've been looking to fulfill, I think I'll have a final count of 49/50. I'm not sure when I'd ever take/have the chance to go to the God Realms for that Obsidian armor.

I'm also a little disappointed that the rewards are stock based on how many things you unlocked, as opposed to unique to what you have actually put in. Ah well, I guess it lets people get everything without doing everything.

Hmm we will have to sign an NDA when joining the BETA and can't even tell people that we are even in it. So we should declare now, that those of us here that get in, will join/create the 'Gaming Steve' guild so we have a way of finding each other. Also we can skirt around the NDA before we even have to sign one. Take that lawyers! Maybe we should also declare what our class/race/name we will be starting off as well? I'll start the list!

Pre-NDA List of Players in the "Gaming Steve" Guild
ilikesanta - Necro / Asura / ilikedeadpeople
Gauph -  ?? / Asura-Human / Guaph
Celdur - Ranger / Sylvari-Human / ______
Gec - Mesmer / Norm / ___
Doctpr Z - Warrior / Charr / Descan!
MetallicDragon - Guardian or Warrior / Charr /___

Probably a stupid name, I know, but maybe we could use it for continuity sake?

I'm planning on making a Charr Elementalist as a main character, but for the beta I'm probably going to make something else like a guardian or warrior. I can't really decide because all the classes just look so fun.

Oh hey look! A video! My excitement for this game grows ever greater.

I have tested the beta. Seems like this will be a great game. The game has great art direction (Like is prequel) and the gameplay is darn good to so far. ;)

Yeah, I tried it too. It's pretty fun, very exciting and busy.
Might take some getting used to for a lot of people. Combat is fun in some situations, but in others it's fundamentally flawed; for example, when we were in a forest doing some tasks, a boss spawned. That lone boss mob became the sole target of every player in the immediate area.
It turned into a fireworks slideshow for the next two minutes.

That kind of chaos is more enjoyable when the numbers are a bit bigger on the enemy side, though things still tend to get all cluster****ed to hell. I imagine it will be a bit different when players can be more spread out across more zones.. but we'll only see that at release when the population of the game is vastly larger.

I dunno. Whatever. Maybe this problem is just something you can never avoid.

Doesn't matter though. It's still fun, game is still nice and challenging. Haven't seen crafting yet, though I imagine that's pretty standard crap since nobody ever talks about it.
Even if it kind of looks like it in some ways, it doesn't much feel like WoW. I'm glad for this considering the other stuff I've tried out recently.
God damn it, Korea sucks.

I had the chance to explore Lions Arch a bit. It's really neat how you can see the old ruins of the city underwater, so it was fun trying to compare the map from the first game and try to find where it would have been in the second.

I also noticed a walled off area with Tengu guarding the gate. Having played Factions, that area pretty much foreshadows being able to access what once was D'Alessio Seaboard and Sanctum Cay, and ultimately Cantha. I'm pretty sure the Tengu will be the next playable race after sometime the game is out for a while. So you can expect the world map will get x2 to x3 times bigger once Cantha and Elona open up.

Just to give you an idea, compare the old world map with the current map from Guild Wars 2.

Alright, so the game is expected to release this weekend and officially on the 28th. But to be sure we're all playing together, or have the chance of bumping into each other, we all need to play on the same world server.

Essentially, for anyone on the North American side, there are:

Anvil Rock
Borlis Pass
Yak’s Bend

Henge of Denravi
Maguuma
Sorrow’s Furnace

Gate of Madness
Jade Quarry
Fort Aspenwood

Ehmry Bay
Stormbluff Isle
Darkhaven

Sanctum of Rall
Crystal Desert
Isle of Janthir

Sea of Sorrows
Tarnished Coast
Northern Shiverpeaks

Blackgate
Ferguson’s Crossing
Dragonbrand

Each world is a single server. That single server hosts it's own version of the entire map of the game. Anyone who chooses the same server will be able to play together in all the regions of the game. Each server is placed in groups of 3, as I have broken up for you. Those 3 groups will be fighting against each other in World vs. World. This is the only instance where other servers interact with each other over the Eternal Battlegrounds. (i.e. 4chan players will be playing together on DarkHaven, who will be at war with the furries on Ehmry Bay)

So then we have a choice. For those of you who want to meet up together should decide on what world we will play in. It's important because you cannot switch very easily. The only way you can switch is with a considerable fee of gems (which must be exchanged with lots of gold you'd have to farm in-game or real money.) On top of that, you can only switch worlds in 3 month cycles. So stick to one you're going to be happy with.

So do some research and find out which communities will be playing on what server and decide on where you want to be.

Ehmry Bay

For European servers, here are your choices:

Fissure of Woe
Desolation
Gandara
Blacktide
Ring of Fire
Underworld
Far Shiverpeaks
Whiteside Ridge
Ruins of Surmia
Seafarer’s Rest
Vabbi
Piken Square
Aurora Glade
Gunnar’s Hold
Jade Sea [FR]
Fort Ranik [FR]
Augury Rock [FR]
Vizunah Square [FR]
Kodash [DE]
Riverside [DE]
Elona Reach [DE]
Abaddon’s Mouth [DE]
Drakkar Lake [DE]
Baruch Bay [ES]

I can't distinguish which of these servers will be fighting who in WvW from my end, so you'll have to find out.

Post by: PatMan33 on August 23, 2012, 02:03:17 pm
Aurora Glade sounds pretty nice.

I pick my servers based on how nice the name sounds. Ehmry Bay is relaxing, it has to be. And Aurora Glade must be gorgeous.

I think any of the lesser names sound good. I can guarantee you that Anvil Rock, Borlis Pass, and Yak's Bend will be flooded with too many people, so I would avoid them.

EDIT: It seems like anyone has the choice to choose either an American or European server, so I think we all can decide on an international home we can use.

That is pretty cool.

And yeah. Name the server DeathGrinder and Meat Slick XXX and you'll be full in minutes. D:

Servers don't just fight specific other servers for WvW. They rotate on a weekly basis, based on rankings (i.e. servers that win a lot will face other servers which win a lot.

I wasn't too sure myself about that. But thanks for clarifying! So that really makes our choice pretty fair. I'm all for picking the most tamest, laid-back server name we could choose.
Title: Re: Guild Wars 2
Post by: Kaizer on August 23, 2012, 02:32:03 pm
I'm more concerned with latency, since most of you guys want a EU server I'm assuming.

Not sure if I pick US servers if I'm locked to only those ones or if I can have one on each.
Title: Re: Guild Wars 2
Post by: Gec on August 23, 2012, 03:29:57 pm
You can pick from any of them even after choosing from either US and EU. But you can't choose a dedicated US and EU server. It must be only one at a time from both sides.

Whats the difference between sPvP and WvW?
Title: Re: Guild Wars 2
Post by: Gec on August 31, 2012, 10:37:03 am
Whats the difference between sPvP and WvW?

PvP is restricted to its own set rules. You can't use equipment outside of it and you play in a more structured arena-style small team format. WvW is large scale, you can use weapons from PvE, and even take the Exp and loot you get from WvW back to PvE. NPC mobs and opposing players from other servers are mixed together. You play across 4 massive maps than compared to a timed-combat small arena that PvP only has. It a lot more open, plenty of things to do, and not as scary or super-competitive as PvP is. Not to mention super fun.

so yeah, i have this game, and i have a guild going too

i dunno if you guys all want to get cozy with each other and play together, but i'm on the Eredons Terrace server which is one of the few that isnt full as **** yet.
the guild system is actually really interesting, and a lot more than the usual extra chat option.

its still free to switch servers so if you want to join up just say the word i guess.

i dont understand what you mean by that, but i hope you dont mean a one sided match
the winners dont get to do anything and the losers get to die constantly, its not that great.

thats exactly whats going on with my server though, the other 2 servers have nothing at all.

also, wvw only last 2 weeks and then they are matched up to other servers, just so you know

I've gotten used to it. I pretty much had to stop thinking how I expect controls to work, and instead, adapt to them.

Turns out there's a bit of ample space on narrow platforms for a toon to stand on without fidgeting around. My only complaint is depth perception with jumping puzzles. Only way to reasonably fix that is getting a 3D display. :P

I have not notice a lot of what my mentioned. But that is likely because I have not had contact with most of those aspects... yet...

I hope they do fix the stuff. And yeah the whole expansion thing was a bit up and down. Not sure about it all going E-sport. Sure I have started to PvP lately. Mainly because I wanted to test it. But I am not sure how E-sport friendly the game is. It is not why I play the game anyway.
