Title: Moving to a new server, site will be down
Post by: Gaming Steve on December 28, 2007, 10:05:34 pm
Hey everyone, I'll be moving the entire site to a brand, new server Saturday night and I'll be shutting down the forums and server at approximately 10:00 PM, EST Saturday night. The entire move should take less than an hour and as quickly as the name servers are able to redirect the gamingsteve.com address the forums and site will be back up.

I don't imagine it will take more than a few hours to move the entire site and for it to be back up. So make your preparations for this downtime. Thanks for your understanding and the new server will be awesome (over ten times faster than the current one!)

How noticeable do you expect the difference to be on our end?

Saturday 10:00 PM EST, that's Sunday 3:00 AM GMT if I'm correct. That's 4:00 AM where I live, so it shouldn't be much of a problem for me, and most of the people on this side of the Atlantic Ocean.
Good luck with the move!

Not sure, but the new server is much faster with two processors instead of one and caching. Overall everything should be much much faster, but its hard to say for sure as the forum is already pretty fast.

But its small things that will make a difference. For example the current server can handle 200 simultaneous SQL calls at once, but the new one can handle 500 simultaneous SQL calls at once, and every single page in the forum consists of several SQL calls. Things like that will be affected.

So in the long run the server can handle more people and more traffic and not get any slower and be more stable overall. At least that's the plan!

Hmm. I've had no issues with the SPEED of the forum as such, it's only ever been being able to access the place sometimes - it'll sit on "waiting for gamingsteve.com" for ages, then act as if I tried to download a php file rather than view it. Also using Search tends to muck up a lot as well.

I'm having trouble editing my posts since the upgrade. It just stalls forever then doesn't go through.

Any form of editation. It just chokes up and doesn't go. Funny cos it worked earlier, now it's just stopped for some reason. Im not going to spam my graphics topic full of new posts to add icons.

Actually, I just found that it does work. It hangs up, but just wait it through until it says "Your post timed out." After that the edit should be made.

Actually the upgrade never happened. Long story short but the new server wasn't set up correctly. So we are currently still on the old server. I will try again next week to get this done. Very frustrating...

Well, Steve. While you spent a few minutes (;)) shifting the server at the event horizon of a black hole, time was running normally for the rest of the universe and I'm fairly sure a lot of people were thoroughly bored and pissed.

... and then it didn't even more :(

Bad news, I was up all night and they still didn't do the transfer correctly. I will have to see what can be done but they can't see to get the transfer done correctly.

By the way, it was in the "news" section on the top of the screen for a week. If you keep that hidden then things like this will catch you by surprise.

Title: Re: Moving to a new server, site will be down
Post by: Gaming Steve on January 06, 2008, 05:53:24 pm
Well, the problem is that I have to take down the site for a few hours to do the move. So I can do it late at night, like a Saturday night, but they don't have exactly the "best" people working that late at night.

Or I can move it during the week, where they have better people working, but I'll have to take down the server in the middle of the day in the middle of the week.

I'm going to call the hosting company and speak to them to see if they can get this done once and for all ... correctly.

Yeah, you ain't gonna lose anyone if you do it when it's convenient for you, you know. If doing it during the week guarantees it'll be over and done with, go ahead and do it. At this point if I were in your shoes i'd be pretty fustrated with them, i'd just want them to get it done already.

Please, please, please.. don't get upset... Steve is having big problems related to this move. He's doing the best he can to fix things. He's asked to let you know that he has a plan and working on it.

Quote from: Steve by email
Okay here is the dealÖ
I moved over the forum from the old server to the new one and everything was looking great. The new server was working great and was SUPER fast Ė definitely worth the upgrade.

So I was trying to fix the SMF database posting error you guys were getting, and then it broke the database. And it just got worse and worse and worse.

So instead of trying to spend days with the server down and no forum while the database was fixed I decided to just go back to the old server. So weíre back to where we were a few hours ago.

I know this is a pain, and I know you guys canít be happy. So here is the plan:

I have been on the phone with my hosting company for about two hours now. Weíre going to carefully transfer the older server to the new one, test it all out using a new method (hard to explain, but this is going to allow me to test the forums like they are working now), and then once the new server is working 100% Iím going to transfer just the forum.

I know, I know. Trust me, I almost had a heart attack when the forum went down. But I was able to get it back up and working, and it will only be moved over once itís working and not before. And I donít plan to do this for several days, so Iíll give everyone notice when it happens.

So sorry everyoneÖ You canít imagine how much sleep Iíve lost over thisÖ

Title: Re: Moving to a new server, site will be down
Post by: Gaming Steve on January 07, 2008, 06:00:42 pm
Okay everyone ... here is what happened:

1) This morning the hosting company moved the entire gamingsteve.com site to a new server. It looked good so I transfered over the domain to the new server.

2) It seemed to be working just great, the new server was insanely fast and all the back-end systems were just fantastic. But there was an error with the forums...

3) So I tried to fix the error, and it didn't work and messed them up.

4) The more I tried to fix them, the more they got messed up, so...

5) Rather than having the forum down for days while I figure out what went wrong I switched us back to the old server. And now we are here.

So we ended up losing some posts, and for that I am truly sorry. But I spoke with the hosting company for about two hours tonight and I have a nice, detailed plan on getting this up and running on the new server once and for all. Before we were trying to just resync the whole server at once and that simply just wasn't working for some reason. They are not sure as it always works which is why they were just as confused as me.

But now we're going to do something slightly different which should work and will allow me to test the server and forums 100% to make sure they work. This won't occur for several days so for now we're still on the older server.

Once again I apologize for all of this. I have probably lost a year of my life due to the stress of trying to move the server and then having the forum go down like that was almost the end of me. That was very very very bad. But it's up and working now, and we're going to do the move slowly to make sure it works.

Once again, so sorry everyone.

Yeah, that was my bad. I made a tiny little mistake, which was TOTALLY easy to fix, panicked when things went down, and was looking in the wrong place to fix it.

But then I calmed down and found the file, fixed it in like 2 seconds, and then everything is back to normal.

Sorry about that, that was MY fault.

On the plus-side the new server looks great, so that's good at least.

I am testing something now, so the site will be probably be "slow" for an hour or so.

I believe this time it's going to work once and for all, but I want to test it during daylight hours so bear with me, thanks.
Title: Re: Moving to a new server, site will be down
Post by: Gaming Steve on January 14, 2008, 07:54:57 pm
Okay new update.

I've tested it a few times now, and I have MY IT guy doing it this time around, so it should go smoothly.

What was happening before is that they were using a method which only takes like an hour or so, but (obviously) it wasn't working so it doesn't really matter how long it takes if it doesn't work!

There is a much better method, but it's very slow and takes around 6-7 hours to complete. However ... it seems to work flawlessly. So I'm going to go with the "slow and it works" method instead.

There really is no "good" time to take down the site, so I am planning on doing it Tuesday night with the new server ready to go on Wednesday morning. And if it doesn't work for some reason it will be a quick transfer back to the original server. Plus I now have extensive backups going so I feel very confident that this will work out.

I guess in the long run this is a good thing as it really forced me to get my act together with the server maintenance and backup schedule. So here is hoping that on Wednesday this will all be a distant memory!

I can safely say 'we all wish you the best of luck, Steve.'

You can upgrade the server whenever it is convenient to do so. Whatever works is all that's important.

Yeah, we can tell it's been a real pain in the ass for you.

Hope it all works out so you can put your mind at ease.  :)

Yeah man take a load off, we can hold off without access to GS forums for a while if that what it takes  :). Anyway when do you plan to move the server anyway, like on a weekend maybe or it's unofficial until you have a time slot to open up? (sorry if I posted this before feels like I posted this somewhere before, de ja vu` huh?)

It says right in his post.

If all else fails, read the News Box at the top of the forums.  ;)

That's good timing, it gives me an hour after class to get my stuff done and then I can go to bed and wake up to the forum!

That'll be 8:00 PM PST for west coasters, no biggie I'll be busy that night. I think GMT will be in wee hours before dawn but no big deal. Aussies will have all Wednesday afternoon to figure out what to do with themselves. :)

Just a reiteration - I don't think anyone will begrudge you taking the time to get it done. I for one could do with an enforced break from the internet.

Sorry wasn't paying attention, but it seems like that time slot for the move isn't so bad. Just get things done, you just take your time to get this done right, good luck the forums are counting on you!! No pressure ;).

In theory there is no difference between this server and the old one (from a programming point of view).

On the plus side I have pretty much mastered server management and DNS management because of this experience ... so I guess that is a plus.

Oh yeah, and there were no lost posts this time around (I too have a new system for the forum database backups as well). So happy day for everyone.

of course I need to do my other accounts on the same server ... but one thing at a time...

Sometimes the forum is really slow for me, it takes about 25 seconds for a page to load then. Is that just me, or do more people have that problem?

This should not happen. The site has been insanely fast since I upgraded to the new server, especially on the backend. On the old server I would sometimes have to wait 30-60 seconds for a page to load, now I have to wait 1-2 seconds.

If it does hang take a look on the bottom left corner of your browser and see what it's hanging on. It might be hanging on an outside call to one of the stat generation sites rather than the gamingsteve.com site itself.

It might very well be something wrong on my end, because we recently got a new router/modem and it's acting a bit strange. That's why I wanted to know whether other people experienced the same slowness.
It's fast now though.

I'll do that the next time it's slow, but I'm pretty sure it just said 'Waiting for www.gamingsteve.com'.
