Title: RTS Games Help...
Post by: Arachoid on December 27, 2007, 01:03:56 pm
My birthday is comin' up soon, and I'm askin' for some RTS games for mah new laptop... What should I get? Price may be a bit of a problem, since my birthday is a week after Christmas and no one ever wants to get me anything that soon.

But, so far I'm askin' for Supreme Commander (with the Forged Alliance expansion), Universe at War, and Dawn of War Anthology... I'm considering Starcraft as well.

I have...
AMD Turion 64 X2 Mobile Technology TL-58, at 1900 MHz.
64 KB and 1,024 KB L1 and L2 caches, respectively.
98.9 GB free hard disk space.
NVIDIA MCP67M graphics card.
1GB DDR2 RAM.
Windows Vista Home Premium.

I'm not sure Supreme Commander will run well, but I'm pretty confident most other RTS games will work reasonably good...

dont get supcom...i also though it would be an awsome game but its super super boring...you could complete contra 4 in one mission and then you didnt even do anything yet...its soooooo slow and all you do is build

i would say medievel 2: total war and C&C3

Supreme Commander is slow as all hell, yeah. It's more of an RTS for the very patient.

Do you have Pixelshader 1.1? If you don't then I'm afraid you can't play Company of Heroes and M2:TW.

Buy RTW or MTW for great fun, I know some good mods that you can use in case Vanilla Rome isn't as good as you hoped.

It depends what kind of rts games do u like. Do you like the base building parts or the ones that throw you right into the action. It also depends on what kind of story do u like. I could recomend World in conflict or if you do the Age series.

Another under-rated RTS that would most definitely work on your laptop as it is a few years old is Homeworld and Homeworld 2. Very good games.

Sounds like your asking to get burried under a pile of Starcraft suggestions.

Total Annihilation is the best one out there next to Star Craft.

Get a hold of Empire Earth 1 somehow.
Wink wink.
It's my favorite RTS so far, not that I've played very many. I tend to hate the genre these days after EE2 and Age of Empires 3.

WOW how could i forget that. I second this its a great and very very in depth game. It should also run on almost any computer. Pity the sequels are such rubbish though  :'(

Try Spring if you interested in Supcom or like TA. It is free so nothing to lose (except a few hours having fun) ;)

I like Rome Total War, there's this fancy lotr mod out there too.

Rise of Nations(the first, not the new one), and of course Heroes of Might and Magic: 3 Complete    :-*

Age of Empires 2 The Conquerors is a great game, classic. Great to play with your friends.

Dawn of War is fun, but i just reinstall, play some scenarios because i had this huge urge to go smash some Orks, then i uninstall it because it doesn't interrest me anymore...  :-\

Any (Westwood made) Command & Conquer game.

Civ ofcourse.

Spellforce 2 or something, Its kinda an underdog, and i dont play it for the campaign, but the "free roam" thing. It is fun and time consuming.

The lord of the rings battle for middle earth 1  (not the second, that one sucked, but that's just me.)

Yes i agree. I like BFME2 a lot better. I like BFME2 a lot in fact. It is not perfect. Still a lot of balance issues. And a worthless gaming portal. But Generals had the same issues. (Especially after the expansion.) Maybe i should install LotR:BFME2:RotWK again?  :)

I haven't played ROTWK but i BFME2 is my favorite RTS. Since the last patch much of the imbalance has been fixed but i have no idea about ROTWK.

The lord of the rings battle for middle earth 2 rise of the witch king.

Damn that IS a long title..

I could just imagine calling gamestop to see if they have a copy and they always don't hear you right the first 5 times.

Well it was some time since i last played RotWK but it seems both a bit better balanced and yet a bit less. I really need to play more to say.

I'm no good at traditional RTSs, so I stick to Total War. Although, I am ok at Company of Heroes.

Heres a brilliant idea,
1. Get friends
2. Get Warcraft 3
3. Get DotA
4. get hamachi(or any lan help thing)
5. start a game with friends(see 1.)
6. PROFIT!!

BFME I is not better the BFME II :P

In this case play the demo of both games before you decide.

I have both 1 is horrid in comparison to the second one. Normally i don't say that kinda thing but 2 improved over everything of the first one so i can't see how anybody could prefer 1 over 2. But hey opinions! every bodys got them! :).
