Title: The "ads"
Post by: Gaming Steve on December 22, 2007, 08:30:59 pm
Hey all, I just wanted to mention about the ads which are now on the forum. I realize that people might not love that these are on the site, but I am simply experimenting with them right now. A few quick notes on this:

So I hope you all understand why I can experimenting with ads on the site. I don't mind spending the money to keep the site up and running, but I also want to continue to upgrade and improve the site and this might just be a necessary evil in order to do this. Thanks for understanding.

I hope I didn't register that $5K properly.

... maybe something has gone wrong in my head but I'm fairly sure that means $5000 and that's a crap load of money.

EXPENSIVE!(?)
Title: Re: The "ads"
Post by: Gaming Steve on December 22, 2007, 08:46:31 pm
Yes, the site runs on a dedicated server. Which means that I have an ENTIRE server running (normally a server will host something like 50-200 individual sites at once) just this site and nothing but this site. It was necessary for the amount of traffic the site was getting.

The forums alone get well over a million page views A MONTH (some months it has been double or triple this), which is a lot of traffic (and A LOT of database calls). So the only way I can keep this site up and running is to have it on a dedicated server which can handle a large amount of traffic quickly. Hence, the expense.

Title: Re: The "ads"
Post by: Daxx on December 23, 2007, 04:28:18 am
Have you thought of getting someone in to tinker with the forums to minimise database load?

I hadn't noticed ads because I have adblock. I might consider whitelisting this site for the moment if the ads don't annoy me because I understand how difficult it is to host a site without anything supporting it.

EDIT: I whitelisted @@|http://*gamingsteve.com/* and I couldn't see any ads. Then I disabled adblock and I still couldn't see them.

Heh.

I don't remember the last time I ever actually clicked an ad.

Also, we shouldn't go on a mass clicking spree because that could get Steve in trouble for clickthrough fraud. I've seen it happen.
Title: Re: The "ads"
Post by: Cobra on December 25, 2007, 09:51:13 pm
Never hurts to click every now and then especially when if the product interests you.  Personally I'd love to see more gaming related ads though. Just to keep with content of the site plus I might be more inclined to click. The ads seriously don't bother me unless I see something I really despise such as those ring tone one or something. Also I hope we don't end up with those dodgy mini game ads you know the ones get the ball in the hoop 5 times before time runs out and it's filled with distracting animations and such. I make a point not to click those because I hate to encourage them.
Title: Re: The "ads"
Post by: Mr. Consideration on December 26, 2007, 07:23:02 am
Maybe if we constantly wrote a single product that none of us are interested in, we could sway the Ads (Because, correct me if I'm wrong, but certian advertisments 'direct' themselves by keywords; Gaming ads to gaming websites; Ringtone advertisements to teenage-heavy sites...) into advertising something none of us want, freeing us from our incessant power.

Thus we bring the Capitalist Oppressor to his knees!

EDIT: Spelling.

So what are the advertising rates nowadays? If it were even say a penny for every page view, a million page views per month would mean Steve's making a $7000 annual profit off of us after the 5k site maintenance...the dastardly, uh, dastard!!

But seriously, will the ad revs cover the site's expenses?

Yeah but my point also was the proportion of the races of the "Habbos" I'm not sure what the actual ratio of different colours of people are for Habbo users but I sware it seemed at most only 20% in the ad were Caucasian.  Maybe my mind was just playing tricks.

Only 25% of people in any ad these days are Caucasian. Maybe 33% if you're lucky and the ad only has three people. It's just political correctness.

I've been meaning to actually tally all the different ethnicities (or races, or whatever you feel comfortable calling the broad sets that distinguish between themselves via skin color) present in advertisements to see which races are over/underrepresented, If I had to guess, I'd say that blacks are overrepresented, Asians and Mexicans (and other Latin peoples) underrepresented slightly, and I'd have to guess that whites are actually fairly spot on. Then again, I still have to do it.

I don't know weather it's to do with the ads, but lately, the tab tries to link to http://dg.specificclick.net/%3Fu. This fails, and I'm sent to a Google page saying that it can't be found, with a list of related links. It might not be to do with the ads, but it only happens on this site, and it's only started recently.

Other than that, I find the ads unobtrusive.

Nope. Adblock removes the ad from your browser and any benefits that the site would get from your view is lost.

Shalom bizarre advertising.

Seriously, these people need to work on their marketing. I imagine the demographic interested in learning a high-standard of Biblical Hebrew is not commonly found lurking on a Gaming forum.

Then again, how many Gamers are interested in Ukrainian Cars and the finest Iranian Mail Order brides? Why is the Internet so terrifying? Do people actually buy these products? Did some lurker on GamingSteve thank Yahweh that now he can finally learn Hebrew from home with the greatest teachers in all Jerusalem? Is some would-be entrepreneur still in negotiations with Nigerians over the 'code to main money'? Did some cautious homosexual finally find confidence in his relationship due to GayParship.com? Does someone out there actually enjoy the terrible MMOs?

We may never know.

Despite it's age-oldness, Pokemon is still rather popular. Even I'd buy the new game released in the red/blue canon. Shouldn't a third one be coming out soon for the DS to go with Pearl/Diamond?

But an MMO is something that has been speculated for ages. Though the idea is nice, I have a good feeling it just won't be what I'd want in it.

Neither heterosexual nor homosexual marriage are taught in schools.
Title: Re: The "ads"
Post by: Met on November 04, 2008, 12:34:41 pm
Supporters of Prop 8 claim that even mentioning any marriage in schools counts as "teaching". So they are using that as a "Marriage is taught in schools."

They have yet to prove that Gay Marriage is taught in schools. Except for one class of elementary school students who were supposedly brought to a Lesbian Marriage.

I doubt that was the case though. I imagine they walked past, went to the church for something else... or if anything, it's the blame on the teacher and not a reflection of the school. In which case the teacher should be held accountable.

Actually I remember hearing about that. A class at a school had a field trip to a marriage. The key point is this however:
1. As in all field trips, permission slips were required and parents were notified in advance. So if a parent didn't want their child going, the child didn't go (there actually was one child who didn't go for this reason).
2. There is no information as to the background information surrounding the event. They likely had a good reason; otherwise, the school's administration wouldn't have approved it in the first place.

That aside, marriage is rarely talked about in school, if at all, and certainly not in curriculum. Usually the only cases that marriage is discussed are when fundamentalist religious schools decry homosexual marriage as sinful.

Anyhoo, it seems that that ad paid a ton of money, seeing five different versions of the same ad are the only ads showing up now.

Which would result in Steve no longer receiving money for showing ads, thus no longer being able to fund server costs for running the forum, leading to Steve simply shutting down the whole site.

Not angry, hardly ever get angry. Steve doesn't want ads that are not family friendly. I think he had some blocked in the past. I've also noticed that ads come up based on what has been searched in google so they are relevant to you in some way or they think it's relevant. After I looked up a bunch of insurance companies I start getting insurance ads.

Not saying that you've been searching these things but that is what happens sometimes. You should probably try ad block and we can let Steve know if they get too bad.
Title: Re: The "ads"
Post by: Didero on March 01, 2014, 06:55:40 am
I think those ads just come up because of all the games and gaming mentioned here. I don't have much interest in MMOs and especially not if they advertise like that.
I've also set Firefox to tell sites I don't want to be tracked, though I don't know how well that works.
I also get ads for dating sites, and I've never visited those either, so I guess ads are based on the content of the current page then.

Now it's PDF converter ads. That's significantly better. Told google to stop it with the bewbies ads and it sort of worked

I've been getting spanx ads. Everywhere. I'm actually not even sure if they've followed me to this site but I'm sure if I refresh enough they'd find me.

there's no hiding.
