Title: The Witcher
Post by: Veraal on October 24, 2007, 02:59:42 pm
Hay, i've been watching this game for a while, but forgot it for a while, then one day it seems that it's just two days till it's released in Europe! yay! (America must wait a bit longer, mohaha)

It looks very good, seeing as it has been given a 6/6 on a review.

Discuss, what do you think of it? will you buy it?

Oh, and here's the linky   http://www.thewitcher.com/ (http://www.thewitcher.com/)

Oh look, its another "B" grade summer action-visual effects movie. :D

I am not getting any "this is going to be great" vibes from what I see on the website. :-\

EDIT: Haha, apparently the main character has amnesia! How original and unexpected! :P

I remember this. Some kind of dark RPG based on an obscure Eastern European novel, yes?

I may...look into this.

I will definatively give some of my precious time for this game, i hunger for some new games...
Besides i like that dark feel.

EDIT: Haha, apparently the main character has amnesia! How original and unexpected! :P

And silver hair. And an eye-scar.

This seriously just seems like not only is it going to be Oblivion II, but it WANTS to be Oblivion II. A mostdoubleplusungood thought-crime, to be certain.

Well i will probably test it. Not my kind of RPG but then again some games are fun even if they do not follow your idea of the ideal game.

And would it not be TES V or did we forget Arena, Daggerfall and Morrowind that was before Oblvion?

No I did not forget Morrowind.

(I'm still trying though. :D)

So, i bought it. It's fun, but doesn't really have that "oooh..." and "aaah..." that other games like oblivion have. But since there are so few that have that factor, i don't think it matters.

The game has a nifty combat thing, you click at an enemy and click again at a certain point to continue a combo. The finishing moves are gory and cool. Slicing off heads and stabbing n' stuff. You start with one steel sword, which is (in my oppinion) your standard and most used weapon. You'll get other weapons later on, like maces(awesome finishing blows.) and daggers( which i have yet to find any good use for.) but you keep your steel sword. there is a silver sword that works good on creatures, i heard, but i have yet to find it.

The graphics are cool.

The characters in dialogues do not seem lifelike, only moving their lips for a few milimeters when speaking....

It's got sex in it, if you have sex with women you get an awesome card with soft porn... and a cat... at least thats what i got the first time. You cant see the sex itself, only blurred vision of their faces humping up and down.

The inventory system is cluttered, but works..

The quest system is cluttered, but works. I took a quest to get some ghoul blood on a billboard, and it said that i needed basic knowledge about the creature. But where the hell to find that?? i asked the guy who is the questgiver, but he doesn't have any thing about it. but since i haven't played too much, i'm sure it'll show up sooner or later.

There are some times though, for example in fistfights, i'll tell: I was asking a really disgusting and obese dude to fight him, and he agreed to fight. when we got in, i landed him a hard uppercut, he staggered backwards. I prepeared another punch, but he smacked me hard in the face, i tried blocking the following attack, but the block button wouldnt respond. then i sent a hard fist towards him, but he just smack'd me, alot. Until i fainted.
I was completely unable to attack him, since Geralt wouldnt respond to my attacks. Horrid images from Gothic 3 combat appeared in my head, and i shut the game off.

Later i got back and played, i went back to the fighting ring to fight another opponent, this one was a rather big fellow, but certain i would beat him better than the obese dude, i fought him, and won. This time without any difficoulties.

I have yet to find out what caused my attack lock.

I haven't played too much, since i found another game(typical...) called Galactic Civ 2. But i will play agains sooner or later.

No I did not forget Morrowind.

(I'm still trying though. :D)

You do not like Morrowind? I think Morrowind was in many ways better then Oblivion. But then again Oblivion toke away some of my favorite weapons (Staffs and Crossbows) and some of my favorite spells (Like levitate and Damage Stat spells (Though the effect is still in the game.))

you can get staves with mods.
Dunno about crossbows.

anything else, comes from the console.

I pretty much know you can mod in anything you want but who is doing the job then? Bethesda or the Community? Mods are not a good excuse for missing features.

i think i remember them saying that the reason they made the construction set for the public is that they can make new things to the game...

Considering when Morrowind came out it was a better game. It was a more hardcore RPG aswell, you didnt have an arrow that pointed exactly were you should go and such. Morrowind felt more free since you had to discover sone things on your own. And I prefer the Silt Striders and boats before the Fast Travel system. Despite this Oblivion is still a great game, its the game I keep getting back to, like I did with morrowind.

Remember Morrowind also got a construction set ;)

(And so does Vampire: the masquerade: Redemption and NWN to name a few.)

Boy this got off track.

Yes it got off track, so instead of keeping the witcher thing, lets talk oblivion and morrowind!
yay.

Besides, the witcher's got horrible loading times, saving takes about a minute.
...

Oblivion and morrowind however, do not.

Does anyone here still play morrowind?
Title: Re: The Witcher, now Morrowind and Oblivion thread.
Post by: Skyward on November 04, 2007, 02:15:50 pm
i definatley still play Morrowind :D
but my loading takes for ever and my disk is sctrached up UNBELIEVABLY bad, so i just use the Computer one i have, get to make cities on the Constructor set then anyways.

Apparently Something Awful gave The Witcher a 10/10, rare over there.
Title: Re: The Witcher, now Morrowind and Oblivion thread.
Post by: Veraal on November 05, 2007, 09:28:28 am
it's more like 7.9/10.
The excitement curve is like, very low at first. then suddenly it gets super fun/cool/awesome,then it gets super boring. then it gets cool for some time, then it goes up and down.

I liked Morrowind's world better. More....gritty? You were struggling, in part, against the State in which you lived, ignorance, racism....

Rather than dark, Evil demons from the shadow realms! My, I've never played an RPG where I had to fight those before!

The whole racism thing yeah but the world it's self endless wasteland with a bit of green on the coast didn't make for an interesting world.

I stopped playing Morrowind when I had to go to this place on a quest but for some reason everyone there would attack me for no reason (they weren't supposed to be enemies), I might install it later though, I really enjoyed the game.

GS seems to like this game even if it got bugs. And it seems to have things in a RPG i really do like :D

Good to see a game where is not ether super evil or super good that is the only to ways to go. In VTM:R you even got the worst ending by playing neutral. :P

It may have been an update and localization issue. The patcher tried to update your U.K. version with an American version patch. Has there been an update?

Ah, its one of those types of patches. Eek, if its problems that deep, it wasnt ready for release yet. It was probably rushed out the doors. By Atari Maybe? I know they pushed Obsidian a lot with NWN2.

Not that I mind too much, their cutscenes arent so painful to watch and retread as NWN2 were, making restaring bearable. With NWN2, the starting missions were so annoying and amatuerish I could only stand to go through it twice. The Witcher in comparison feels like a game I can retread over and over. Of course, I have more patience than most gamers, so your reaction may vary.  :D

I'd pretty much shelved the game too in light of the disasterous load times. It feels noticeably nippier and more playable now, so much so that I finally cracked Chapter 2 after 30 odd hours of play (am I slow?).

Still can't believe some of the language this thing spits out ;)

I thought that but have since found mine can run this at 1280x1024 on medium settings :) And thank god it can because the little bit I've played so far has me hooked. I'm really enjoying this and that is a surprise as I never really got on with Oblivion and have never been a PC RPG fan before.

The only problem is that my girlfriend is struggling to find me the first book of the series in English and she's Polish :p

Hey guys i really liked this game and even wrote an review:

The Witcher
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Intro
The Witcher is a RPG game from a new Polish studio called CD Projekt RED STUDIO and published by Atari.
The Witcher is based on a book series of an Polish writer Andrzej Sapkowski.

Story
The Witcher takes places in a medieval setting in a land that looks like an eastern European land (ie: Polen, Russia etc.)
The Witcher is about an Witcher called Gerald and because of you die at the end of the books you have memory loss and you cant remember allot.
Lucky you get found by some friendly Witchers (who you might know?) but after getting attacked by assaisans you travel alone to the north.
After that you'll meet more Characters you knew (but not anymore) and you ofcourse need to help the citizens from there problems.
The game  is separated in 6 Act + an Epilogue and an Intro.
But the cool thing about the story is that in the begin/middle/end of every Act you have to make a choice and this will change the story and the quest you need to do, but most of the time you wont even know this is a Story related choice because you are always making choices so it well blended in.

Gameplay
The Gameplay in The Witcher is something new: you can play the game with alone your mouse you attack with an click on a enemy and at and of your attack you need to click again to begin the next attack if you don't the enemy will attack you.
This is quite a hard combat system in the beginning but once you get the hang of it you'll be killing enemies in no time.
You also have 3 stances: Fast (for fast enemies) Heavy (for strong slow enemies) Group (for if your surrounded by enemies) this is quite a neat addition not only does it make the combat less boring but you can also see when you need to use a stance (ie: if a you see a big slow enemy you know you'll need to use the Heavy stance)
There also 2 sword types: steel (for human) and silver (for beasts).
There also 3 camera views 2 from from above and 1 from after the back this will also change how you play the game.

Quests
The quest in The Wither are very fun you mostly have 2 choices: the more work choice or the less work more money spending choice.
There also quest that will give you the choice to change the story (ie: you or need to kill the witch or help her) and mostly these quest are choosing between 2 bads and you don't know which was is the really evil one, so replaying is recommended.

Graphics
The Graphics in The Witcher are very good looking and are powered by Bioware's Neverwinter Nights 2 engine, the look good but can be demanding on your PC.

Replay Value
With already 60+/- gameplay hours and allot of choices to make that really change your environment and maybe even mods on the horizon the replay value is solid

Glitches/Bugs
The only Bugs in The Witcher are the loading times there very long and you need to reload everytime you enter a house and go outside again hopefully these loading times will get fixed because now the game is almost unplayable.

Verdict
I can say with out (hopefully) getting killed: The Witcher is the Best RPG for the PC of 2007

Score: Thumbs Up 9/10

I have to admit that, in the cave with the witch woman, and with the angry mob outside, i find it peculiar that i could casually have sex with the witch inside the cave, in fron of all the kids around there, and after the battle with the wolf things she didnt even mention it, just said goodbyes.

I can't decide - a developer listening to complaints and providing additional content to customers, or a second attempt to make money off of a game by adding a few features and repackaging?

Considering my love for the game, I'll believe in the first option...and I'm really looking forward to it!

The thing that nags me now is that I want to experience the first 3 chapters again with the new additions...but that's around 30 hours of playtime!
Title: Re: The Witcher
Post by: Didero on February 19, 2008, 09:57:42 am
If you really love the game, you wouldn't mind replaying it ;)
Title: Re: The Witcher
Post by: T-BirD on February 21, 2008, 09:21:50 am
Touché!

Although the two problems I face are - I'm halfway through; would I restart the entire story to see the added content in the beginning, or do I finish and THEN replay? ....will save games of the original edition even be compatible with the new?

Then of course there is the deluge of games I have to play with not much time to play anymore...

I do certainly look forward to the new stuff, and might even re-buy the game if it's impressive enough to reward the devs.

Well you can see some new dialogue right at the beginning, it looks like there is some new options (or it's just my memory failing me.) It all looks great!

There were a bunch of new little bugs I noticed too. When I was watching the sword trail for the color change, I noticed that when the trail passed over the enemies weapons, the trail caused them to disappear. This is probably caused by some relationships with the zbuffer I don't know about.

After that, a weird crash happened, when I tried to reenter Kaer "The Castle" Morhen after collecting the ingredients for a potion, the screen froze, and there were no telltale "loading sounds" coming from the computer. I assumed it had frozen, but when I wiggled the mouse I found I could still move around! The game state was frozen, but I guess the display and interface functions are separate, because I could then hit escape, and load up without having to exit the game. It was bizarre. Then an hour later it crashed to the desktop. I probably should have exited the game anyway with that strange "frozen game" bug.

I chalk up the weapon trail problem to the engine itself. I have no idea what caused the frozen game state bug, but I have a really low opinion of the Aurora engine, So I am going to blame that again. :D Other than those two problems which I havent experienced for a while, I think its running much smoother than it did before. Though I am going to have to wait until deep in certain chapters to really see how much better it is, since there was this one area that really bogged down my machine.

Good times, it looks like The Witcher: Enhanced Edition has been delayed!

Here is the press release. (http://www.thewitcher.com/community/en/news/494.html)

They say that in the coming days (This article was released on the 18th) a new date will be announced so we'll see. In light of this though, it looks like anyone waiting for the patch to finish and/or buy the game should just go out and get the game anyway. The Enhanced Edition will be repackaged and sold as a "new" game, but anyone who owns the older version can still download the Enhanced Edition. It will be a hefty download though.

Well any screen shots we have will be of the older version. You may want to wait about a month for the enhanced edition to come out. It should be the same price and if you buy it new you'll be getting a much better game. Although, people who have already bought the game CAN get an enhanced edition patch for free.

The Fileshack one has  problem, it cuts off the file extension(*.exe)

So if you double click and it asks you to search for a program that will run the file, you have this problem.

To fix it, simply right-click, go down to rename, and add .exe to the end of the name and hit enter. And it will immediately recognize it as an application. If it  is already recognized as an application in the properties, you do not have this problem.

So.

I loved Witcher 1. I really liked Witcher 2.

And I guess continuing the trend of liking these games less over time, I enjoy Witcher 3. But damn, I can't get into Witcher 3. It feels bleh. Like, I don't know, it feels like it's doing what it thinks it has to do. There's nothing hooking me there. Whatever grabbed me about the first games is gone from this one. Something is missing. Anyone else having this problem? I see a beautiful game world, lots of dialog, cool places to visit, tons of things to do... and... so the **** what? I don't care. This game doesn't feel like the other two and while it's clearly a very good game, it's not a game I feel like I have to play.

What the heck is going on with Witcher 3? Why don't I like it as much as the other two? I haven't even played it in like, two weeks! Would rather play XCOM or Chrono Trigger or something. :\

It's a great game and deserves all the praise it gets for its design and mechanics.

I'm just not having a ton of fun and don't feel like playing it when I have other games I'd rather play. Honestly I think it was the way the game started that annoyed me. Mondo spoilers?

The **** did Yennefer come from all of a sudden? I played the first game more than five times through and the second game three times. I could have sworn the whole reason I was on this damn quest was to find her, and then there she is right at the start of the game. Oh... okay. So now we're not looking for Yennefer, we're looking for Ciri now. Uh... okay. Who the **** is Ciri? Where in the actual hell did this character come from? I think I remember her being mentioned once. And certainly not in this context.

I started off with questions and confusion and it kinda messed up the experience for me because I still don't know what I'm doing. Thought I knew what I was doing, but then they apparently solved that problem off-screen and now here's something new. Why did I bother playing the first two then? :|||||||||||
Title: Re: The Witcher

Also. **** like this (http://forums.cdprojektred.com/threads/52056-Patch-1-07-coming-soon-to-all-platforms) is why I'm in no hurry.

Edit: to expand. I'd have already beaten the game or abandoned it by now due to my nature and therefore these game altering, for the better, changes, would be worthless and I'd have missed out on a superior first time experience.
Title: Re: The Witcher
Post by: Celdur on July 07, 2015, 12:29:23 pm
Yeah, it's kinda dumb.
They started the first game with amnesia so that people not familiar with the books to ease into the world and learn it along with geralt.
Then they reintroduce all the major characters one by one, and add a few more in the 2nd game.
But then in 3 they just expect you to know Ciri like they assume you did your homework and read all the books.

I really don't know why in the 1st or 2nd game they didn't just say like hey geralt did you know you sort of have a daughter? Cause that seems like something he'd want to know.
Title: Re: The Witcher
Post by: PatMan33 on July 07, 2015, 01:05:21 pm
Agree agree agree!

Additionally, I am glad I am not really into Witcher 3 right now because, as eropS said, there's more content and stuff coming out. I'll just set Witcher 3 aside for now and wait for the "expansion pass" garbage to come out, the patches to come out, and all the other DLC tidbits to come out. Then I'll jump back in.
Title: Re: The Witcher
Post by: PatMan33 on July 27, 2015, 12:08:22 pm
Anyone notice how a lot of the DLC that was hyped for Witcher 3 ended up being armor sets and costumes?

The actual additional content is part of the expansion, which... I mean I get it, but give how CDPR did this stuff in the past, I kind of expected to get some worthwhile content as part of their free DLC. Costume packs and weapon sets don't really impress me. New Game+ appears to be the last of the free DLC.

I went to this shady place where something was amiss. I solved the problem and the sun came back out. And then the sun didn't stop coming out. D:

I killed the vampire causing the problem. Wasn't even a named quest or anything.

But there was a book mentioning that the woman that got turned into a Bruxa was "full of life to the brim" or something, so maybe that's why the set the sun to Michael Bay after she died.

The new expansion is very good. Having a lot of fun with the story. Haven't even gotten into the sidequests yet.
