Title: Advance Wars DS gets a 9.2 from GameSpot.

That makes it not only their highest rated DS game so far, but their highest rated game out of both the DS and the PSP. (That title was previously held by Lumines).

And let's see...I think there were only three games on the DS before that, that even made it into their 8 range. Super Mario 64 DS (8.4), Meteos (8.5), and Kirby: Canvas Curse (8.6).

So is there anybody with a DS out there getting it? Looks pretty awesome, if you ask me. (Shoot, now I'm really curious to see what they give Nintendogs...which ironically comes out the same day as AWDS.)

...and they just gave Nintendogs a 9.1! It's not every day that two games for the same system that are released on the same day both get the Editor's Choice award on GameSpot!

And on portables? On the same day? Wow, its a good day to be a DS owner. And the line-up is just starting!  Im getting Nintendogs as soon as I can. And could anyone explain Advance Wars to me? Is it like an RTS?

It's a turn based strategy game. It's sort of like Fire Emblem, if you've ever played those games. (Actually made by the same developer.)

So I went and picked It up. Initial impressions are good, but I'm a little disappointed in the single cart multi. As far as I can tell you can only play combat (the real time mode) on four maps with 4 differnt units to buy with adjustible funds. The problem is the base unit is too cost effective, and the most expencive unit, which for it's price should be a juggernaut, seems weak and is crippled by only being able to shoot far and not close. I've only played with one person however, and strategies that work 1v1 aren't likely to work if say, there are 7 more people playing. I'm curious to see how that would work, as there are only 4 teams. I guess it's either you take turns, or 2 units on a team at once.

Most people think that the real time mode was silly and just an afterthought.  The core of AW has always been the turn based combat.  I am deffinatly picking this up.

The single cart multiplayer sux, but the single player and the multiplayer with one ds is as great as the first advancewars.  ;D

My personal favorite character is eagle. He has good aircraft and has the ability to make all mecinised units move twice in 1 turn. My only problem is that eagles power has been tecnicly weakend becuase now any CO can do it by simply duel striking. and instead of suffering a unit decrease in power on the 2nd move all the duel stike units are stronger.

my only other rant is that I have seen good games go down the tubes when someone got a infantry or mec get right up to  a command center and cap it once and duel strike again. Witch I feel is very cheap becuase the opponent couldnt react.

AW:DS is the best DS game to date. But that doesnt make it better than the original.

I bought AW:DS based on hype and im not impressed. Since the girlfriend has been hogging the DS for nintendogs and meteos, i dusted off the original AW that i havent played for years and erased all data to start over. WOW! Sure, the new one is good, but my appreciation for the simplicity and balance of the original has increased 100x and I'm feeling that its the superior AW version.

Plus, AW:DS is really exposing how uncomfortable the DS is for longterm play. This whole experience is actually selling me to buy a Micro rather than a second DS because AW on a device that I would carry at all times would be a better investment than a second DS that stays home due to its bulk.

I have AWDS (that sounds like a disease) and I think its pretty good. I'm playing it at a very slow pace, just like every so often. I like how you can have all the info you need on the second screen, and it's also fun pwning people with the dual strike. I think its better than previous version for little other reason than I want to disagree with that other guy. I don't know why.

It's been a while since this game has been released, and according to this thread, people were kind of Meh-ing it despite the good reviews. It's been a year, and the DS Lite has caught me in its grasp. I'm wondering if the first impressions changed at all, or if anyone who didn't post in this thread has an opinion about it. It's a good buy now too, at $20, so I'll probably get it. I just want to make sure I don't regret it. Any thoughts?

the game totaly pwns i stil play it and i have it for about as long as it was released. the game is really chalanging and it has TONS of mission. when u complete the campain on normal you can do hard (and its really hard i havnt completed it yet) and you have warroom, chalange ,combat and versus for multiplayer (you only need 1 DS for mp cose its turnbased) and you can make your own maps to ^^

That's exactly the kind of stuff I want to hear. I'll definitely pick it up this weekend.

It was alright in my opinion. I don't t think it's because its a bad game, I just think I don't understand the series well enough.

Once I play with it a bit more, I may enjoy it.

It took me a couple of plays of Spann Island to really understand the basics. From then on it's pure fun seeing how you can stomp the comp more effectively. Or go vs some people. Or learn the broken trio  ;D

AWDS is a great game, but it is true that the previous two GBA incarnations were so incredible that this version pales a little in comparison. Having said that, I'm still happy to have it, and if you haven't played those earlier versions, then think of AWDS as a light introduction to two of the greatest turn based strategy games you will ever play.

Yeah, I know, bump. Well, I got this game not too long ago. And it totally rocks(!) I have logged in about a day of playing it, beat campaign, and am now trying to buy the store out. This game is a must have for your DS, unless you don't enjoy strategy games. Great story, and it's really satisfying when you can log in 3 perfect 100s on your mission score. The survival modes are really damn hard though. >:( (for me, at least)

The Advance Wars series is superb, but must come second to the truely greatest turn based game one could ever play: Civilization.

I agree, Advance wars is awesome.  But I hate those oozoids or whatever they're called in the campaign mode.

I got AW 2 for christmas, and I'm curios about something...There's a robot CO in AWDS, right? What're his abilities?
