Title: Spinning Girl Optical Illusion!
Post by: SBD on October 11, 2007, 10:23:51 pm
Which way is she spinning? IT CHANGES, MAN!

Oh and by the way, my sister, whos a doctor, reckons the left-brain/right-brain explanation in bull****.

Clockwise. I still see no optical illusion here.

Gah! I can't make it turn counter-clockwise. I'm too right-minded. Ah well, maybe that's just my virtue.

Those that cannot see counter clockwise, point your eyes to the top right of your monitor screen and use your peripheral vision to watch the spinning chick.
Works for me.

Otherwise, looking directly at her, all I can see is clockwise.
Nothing but clockwise.
Clockwise forever.
Tick

tock.

EDIT: Holy crap, I'm stuck seeing counter clockwise.
Someone get the holy water.

[edit] I just know this is going to end up in someone's avatar.

Hell, we should get everyone to do it.
Then everyone like me won't be able to identify anyone else 'cause we go by avatars over screen names.
Not as quickly anyway.

Anyway, I have a question -- is it just me, or do I see nipples?
Boy, this illusion has everything!

whait, switched........now it switched again!...... and again! and.... how the hell....does it just switch every minut or so or what? god thats freaky!

....this is gonna keep me up all night thinking about it  :-\

I first see it go clockwise but then some where in the middle i swear it goes counter clockwise. I when I try to switch it i can't. I think maybe it really switches after awhile just to make you go insane.

I think the left-brain/right-brain explanation is bull too.
The whole left vs right thing is an outmoded idea anyway, modern neurology uncovers little that supports it to the extent people claim it exists.

Also this "illusion" has been known about for years. Something spinning at a high enough rate can be seen to go backwards. Wheels on a car for instance.

At first I saw it clockwise, then I covered the shadow and after a while it was counter clockwise. Then clockwise again.

When I first saw it, it was counter clock-wise. Then it changed to clock-wise and not I can't see it the other way.

You need 2 people watching the same image at the same time if your both seeing changes at the same time its fake if the person sitting next to you is seeing a different direction to you then it is real.

Edit I can now force the direction it appears to go in to change.

She only switched once while I was paying attention. The other times I needed to put her in my periferal vision. It was counter-clockwise originally.

I've been playing around with the back to back you posted ChiToes. The real trick is to try getting them to spin in the same direction... I've been able to get it to happen a couple times, but my best was about 5 seconds before it switched back to opposites.
Title: Re: Spinning Girl Optical Illusion!
Post by: Yannick on October 12, 2007, 02:39:22 pm
I'm able to not let them go equally fast. So their toes hardly touch. Can't hold it long though.

Sitting side by side me and my women see it in different directions. She sees it switching alot i see it going anticlockwise unless i focus and switch it (gives me a headache when i do.) Its not fake.
Title: Re: Spinning Girl Optical Illusion!
Post by: Snake on October 12, 2007, 03:01:17 pm
How are you people seeing this? It never changes for me. It's simply a programmed video. It can't change.
Title: Re: Spinning Girl Optical Illusion!
Post by: Yannick on October 12, 2007, 03:03:08 pm
Try focusing really hard, and peeling your eyes. If you concentrate hard enough, the women will change direction. Or atleast try to, but give up and start turning normally again.
Title: Re: Spinning Girl Optical Illusion!
Post by: Snake on October 12, 2007, 03:04:52 pm
This is entirely impossible. You must be really really freaking your mind out if you think she's not going the normal direction.

I find it helps if you spin your finger in the direction you want her to go in, in time with her spinning.

For once, Snake is right.  It's going clockwise, not counterclockwise.  If this is not obvious, look in a mirror and make sure your pupils are the same size.

Superior? You are simply loony, and illogical if you think it's not going the direction it is going.

...Sorry.  :-[ I'm going to sulk in my corner as I ponder the existential ramifications of my being loony.

What MasterChiToes said is absolutely right. In fact, when the woman points to the right, it is an exact mirror (or should be) of her pointing left. If you're having trouble I recommend closing your eyes and visualizing it going the other way, then looking again.
Title: Re: Spinning Girl Optical Illusion!
Post by: Snake on October 12, 2007, 09:06:43 pm
It being an exact mirror does not matter. It it turning clockwise, stop this ridiculous thoughts of it being an illusion, and admit you're just loony.  :P
Title: Re: Spinning Girl Optical Illusion!
Post by: stuck on October 12, 2007, 09:11:55 pm
Here is what makes your brain think which way it is rotating. Your perception of when the bottom foot is in front of the girl is all that really matters. If you can force yourself to think the bottom foot is in front when, by your current perception, it is in the back, you can make the girl change directions easily.
Title: Re: Spinning Girl Optical Illusion!
Post by: Snake on October 12, 2007, 09:15:13 pm
It's obviously in the front. Anyone who's not retarded knows that feet look like that when they're in the front. The shadows also demonstrate that she is rotating counterclockwise. All the crap about it rotating anti-clockwise is logically, physically, and visually impossible without screwing with your own mind, which I do not recommend.

NOW I GET IT!

the illusion isn't that it looks like its going the other way: it does switch of once in a while. the illusion is it does it at the moment in the circulation when you cant tell which direction its going, when the legs touch and the figure is more disambiguous. it just flips at the time that you cant notice it changing direction.

but this is discounted by the fact that it will reliably change in if I use the indirect vision. so how does it work?
please tell me if you know.

You sort of have to relize it's a 2D object not 3D the depth of the extrmities is an illusion and you can see it as if it appears that the leg moves toward or away from you.

Blink when her extended leg is closest to the side.  If you time it right she'll change direction.
Keep your eyes on the legs to keep the number of "sight cues" to a minium.

An interesting challange don't let her make and complete turn try to make her leg appear to change direcetion at each extreme right or extreme left sort of like tennis to a degree.

About 30 seconds.

Damn, you must really put your time to good use :D

I think the left brain, right brain thing is bull. It's more just a case of using a reference point, I used the foot, somehow it made it change direction...perhaps I should drag it into flash and see what way it really turns.

Edit:

Looked at it in flash, it is indeed spinning clockwise...bastards, they were trying to trick us >:(

It DOES change direction for me and people sitting beside me and we see it GOING differently at the same time.  The head changes the foot changes and the rotation changes.

Snakes logic: I can't do it so its impossible and complete bs.

EDIT. I just rembered an articuale by someone i once read . It was basically the way some humans act to things they cannot see nor understand. To make this point he had theses pictures they were a bunch of colors that supposedly had pictures in them. The pictures were a bunch of colors put together but actually contained ACTUAL pictures of things like a horse. Some people see it right away others had to look for awhile and some couldn't see it no matter what. Those ones called BS on the pictures and refused to believe they were anything other then colors mixed together. You could not convince them other wise even though others seen them. They simply said sure if you look long enough you will make images out of them you can do that by staring at anything. That was the moral of the whole thing. When indeed there were images in the pictures ones who seen them knew they existed while others said the ones who seen them were crazy.

You figured it out. She isn't spinning, she is just closing her legs then opening them.

EDIT: Wait, she is moving in a figure 8 really. When her leg goes infront of the other, in the next frame it switches, so her leg is behind the other. Your mind ignores this because the image is going to fast. Once your mind sees this it swithces.

I've gotten to the point where I can make her spin anyway I want without even blinking.

In a book, somewhere on my shelves, a college professor tells a story about asking his class if they thought this woman was attractive:

Half of the class said yes, the other half said no.  A fight nearly broke out over it.

Well GD explained the spinning girl and Old/Young Lady is a classical image of a Old/Young Lady. (one can see both a old lady and a young lady in the picture.)

There all considered to be optical illusions because they play tricks on our mind.

I just found a dreaky way to reverse the spinning girl direction (at least works with me), if I change my eyes direction sepparately (you know, you get doubled vision) she will start spinning on the other direction, if I do it again she spins back to the right and so on :S

EDIT: After 15 minutes looking at it I'm about to be able to control which way it looks like its spinning for me at will, lol.

EDIT2: I finally found out a way it always works, cover the bottom-right part of the picture in a way that you can still see the leg on which she is standing and its shadow, now look at your hand and back at her and she will be spinning on the opposite direction, if your eyes don't eventually go back to the direction you should naturally see just do it again and she'll switch (bottom-left works too).

Looks at GDs post for the explanation of how it appears to change it shows perfectly how the illusion works which should make it easier to visualise her spinning the other way.

I still make them both switch and go separate ways at the same time. I'm dizzy.

Awesome! If I flick my eyes over either side the middle one immediately changes.

I can get her to go back and forth by looking back and forth.

First of all, don't Necro please. Especially this topic. It is maddening.

Second of all, GAH! I can't stop looking at it... it keeps turning clockwise and then counter-clockwise suddenly for a bit and then it'll shift back (sometimes not until after a few minutes). And now three of them? I sometimes see the left and the middle spinning the same way, but the one on the right keeps changing her mind. Grrr.

A little late with that finger wag Dooms.

And rather pointless. I think it was much better to resurrect this topic than to have made another stupid spinning girl illusion.

I'm rather tempted to get into an argument about the benefits of necroing v. creating a new topic, but that's already been done.

Also I can't tell if all the images are in sync or not...

Sometimes when you cross your eyes they all go in the same direction.

It's counter-clockwise with me. And nothing I do seems to make it change.

Gungnir actually made a post that i think is of value. I enjoyed watching it at least. It would be dumb to start a new topic for that post alone.

Not to beat a dead horse, but we all know that necroing is ok if it contributes to the topic at hand.

This was a good example of a necrobump.  A bad example would be if he posted "I agree."  or "This optical illusion is crazy."

Yah.

I don't think is was an unsuccessful necro, he revived it rather well.

Ok no more discussion about if the bump was a valid bump or not. Keep it about how freaky the illusion is.

For future reference, any post that basically amounts to "ditto" isn't really necessary.

Also, if I cover either the left or the right spinning girl, the middle one spins in the same direction as the uncovered one, though it takes here a full rotation to adjust. It's weird.
