Lately I've seen a lot (A LOT) of people misusing the apostrophe... are the English rules for the apostrophe the same as the American rules?

Calling the language 'American' instead of 'English' should have been your first hint.

I'm constantly correcting people about adverbs and adjectives.

I remember when my "English teacher" used revel as a noun. Something about people attending a revel. Anyway, wow...just...wow. That was scary.


But my 6th grade English teacher rocked. Rocks. Whatever.

I'll be the first to admit that my spelling and grammar isn't perfect (You guys are lucky I'm an avid spell check user) but I know a lot of the mechanics and some of it bothers me because it's so simple to remember.


PAT'S LESSON OF THE DAY
The apostrophe denotes ownership.


The boy took the monkey's banana.
Correct

The boy took the monkeys banana.
Not correct

Who did the banana belong to? The banana belonged to the monkey.


Monkeys like to swing in trees!
Correct

Monkey's like to swing in trees!
Not correct

Who likes to swing in trees? The monkeys like to swing in trees.


Words can be made plural without an apostrophe. In fact most words in the plural form have no apostrophe.



It's not an airtight lesson but it works.

Then we get into the plural nouns with apostrophes.

When referring to multiple monkeys at the same time:

The monkeys' bananas were all rotten.
Correct

The monkey's bananas were all rotten.
Incorrect

Otherwise, you wouldn't be able to tell whether you had one or multiple monkeys.
