It usually goes in the addon pack if it has an.. erm... .info file, and else it goes in the garrysmod folder itself.

That's what I did, I think.  Where does the custom content show up in the Spawn menu?

It usually pops up as a new menu. So you'd have:

TF2
Ep1
Ep2
Custom Content 1
Custom Content 2
Etc...

Do I make a new folder in the addon folder, or do I just paste the folders it came with?  Because I made a new folder, named it SuperMarioGalaxy, and pasted the things it came with in their.

No you just unpack the crap they give you in the addon folder. It works for me.

You should extract the contents of the zipfile to 'Steam/steamapps/[username]/garrysmod/garrysmod/', replacing the '[username]' part with your Steam username. It'll warn you that there already is a folder called 'addons', but you can just click 'Yes', because nothing will be overwritten. It'll also warn about the 'settings' and 'spawnlist' folders if you didn't click 'Yes to All', but you can click 'Yes' on those warnings too. Be sure to delete the 'SuperMarioGalaxy' folder you made before though, so you don't confuse Gmod.
It should work then
