Eve changed the probing system a while back and now I cruise the systems looking for hidden objects. I've been driving through a lot of wormholes just for fun.
I made the mistake when I started of jumping in on a large corp/alliance operation and found myself bored with a 'second job'. Now I just do what I want. Combat, sure. Explore, sure. Mine or haul cargo, sure.
The problem with Eve is that it has an insane learning curve, a ruthless PVP environment, and you always feel like you're going to die. But once you get over that, its actually a fun game and if you can get in to a good corp you can find a lot of fun people to hang out with.
If you are new to the game, play the tutorial missions! They will give you a taste of what is going on in the game. Once you have finished them, take your ship and set a course for out in the middle of 0.0 space (like system 373z-7). Yes, you will probably die. Get yourself killed right off the bat to know how it works and what it feels like. If you get podded, big deal, you're new and don't have any implants (plus it is worth hearing the computer scold you for dying). You'll get a new starter ship and be right back at the base you started at. Now go play the game normally.
I know people that go and die repeatedly right off the bat just to see how far the can go. Sometimes people will start a conversation with, offer help, etc... not everybody in the game is a back stabbing ganker.(maybe 30%)
http://evemap.battleclinic.com/ <--- ever wonder what the game universe looked like outside of the game... go here. If you have a modern computer, after starting the map program, click on view and enable the full graphics. (you will need to close the program and restart it.
