How many conservative states shall boycot this game?
« on: March 27, 2005, 05:18:40 am »
At the moment is there is some conservative states a gigantic backslash against everything that is  related to evolution. Even against the nation geographic television network and against certain I-max movies was there a backslash. Thought I haven't heard of a boycot of games because they contain evolution yet but a big part of this game is build arround evolution. So do you think that some states would boycot this game?

I hope not but with those fundies do you never know.

I assume you're talking about 'states' of the US? Not all of us live there you know :P ;D

Anyway, I'd say it's a distinct possibility of at least delayed release dates as various ratings organisations either agree, or agree to disagree, on a rating determined by the unruly mobs.

Never fear, you'll be able to get it online anyway ;D

Seeing as people don't HAVE TO get it, the goverment can't do much, boycotts won't help.

I don't see how you could outlaw it. They didn't outlaw Halo, and there are many against war.

I didn't mean a governemnt boycot but a private boycot. There have been for example instances of I-max movie centers who refused to air movies who contain evolution because there public demanded that.

I think they are talking more about things like vigils out side of game stores... religious people trying to dissuade buyers from getting the game ect.
I survived the flood of 2008 and all I got was this crappy homelessness.

... America is very split between the ideas of evolution vs. creation.

I have no doubt that if Spore is a top seller it will recieve a lot of controversy.
Which is also why I'm glad I live currently in California.

... oh and... it doesn't really matter about politics, that's the illusion. It's really an issue on religion.

And I am glad I live in England where we don't have that silliness (though we do have other silliness).

Groups of people should still realize that it is only a video game. Really, it has UFO's and carnivorous carebears in it. ::)

Like Jayce, I live in the UK, so the creationism thing all seems a little bit weird to me... But thinking about it, couldn't Spore be said to be advocating intelligent design instead of evolution? The only way your creature is ever going to get bigger than a cell is if you help it; it's not just going to evolve on it's own if you just leave it there. It needs a "God" (and as this is a God game, that means the player) to get it going. Although then you could say the game is advocating blasphemy - we're making ourselves Gods. ;)

Religion and politics are the same thing. Not related; not similar; the same thing. That they're not; that's is the illusion.

I don't see how it's a big deal, honestly. People who want it will buy it, people who don't won't. I really can't imagine picket lines or big boycotts. That sort of thing didn't even happen with GTA, if I remember correctly.

Well, I am and at least 49 others are, so we should be set with enough buildings/creatures/etc.
