I think they've done a B or possibly A-worthy job. Hardware wise everything is fine except the max 20GB HDD which is a huge problem because of the video service and size of mainly video files. Also I see a problem (game wise) with Blue Dragon being on 3 DVDs. This isn't a huge deal (not for a single player game IMO) but it completely disclaims MS's statement that you "don't need blu ray" or any other next gen format. Its proof that MS is at fault, at least in the JPN market where games are 50+ hours and full of cut scenes. However, it makes me curious that games like Gears are only 5 acts on 1 DVD, I'd rather have it much longer. But more importently is the fact that Blue Dragon is a fairly early game. Here we are at 1 year and we already see 3 DVDs, thats a lot compared to FFVII having 3 CDs 3 years after the PS1 launched (it came out in 98, right?). Aside from that, I have a problem with games like Crackdown, Bioshock, Forza 2, and Fable 2 being pushed back seeing as how they are key titles. Peter Moore said they'd be coming this year (some of them) and none are which is a big let down because the 360 only has 1 single killer app in its, arguably, unchallenged year in the console wars. We've seen some pretty great games on the 360 like Oblivion, GRAW, CoD2, Dead Rising, and Gears but none have really attracted on the main stream. I mean Jack Thompsan hasn't said a thing about Gears and the chainsaw is pretty nasty. There hasn't been a game like GTA or Halo that EVERYONE knows and people want just because of the name. I suppose were still waiting but MS better have some killer new and exclusive games soon. Another problem is the XBL Arcade. There are way to many "classic" games. This is great for mom and pop but for the hardcore or even a few casual gamers theres not enough new content. MS also hasn't really connected with their casual market as much as they wanted to. They won't even get their 10 million console lead and although some may think its because of the competition or software I think its because of the price, 400 dollars for a console is still pretty steep and I think that is a big factor. MS should be advertising to what casual gamers like more, Gears just looks to much like a hardcore game. Dead Rising, Madden, and Saint's Row look like they should be advertised a tad more to MS's "target audience". Theres a hefty amount of games that have hardcore followings and audiences on the 360 like DOA, GRAW, SCDA, and Gears which is always a good thing but when you alienate casual gamers its not.
Ahhh! Any how I think their heading in a good direction for 2007 gamewise and XBL wise because of the content their pumping out. They just need a price drop and a bigger hard drive. Some good exclusives are coming, like Lost Planet, and MS is right on track to dethroning Sony as long as Nintendo doesn't come from behind (personally I think the Wii will show its age in 2008 and will lose in popularity). MS just had a tough year with supplies not picking up till literally April and they need to remember to hit Sony hard when their in shortages next year (including European launch). A price drop when the PS3 starts picking up would be perfect.
Wow I'm actually suprised, I didn't mean to come off against MS, infact I meant the opposite at the start of the thread, but they have some serious problems. Of course Sony and Nintendo have their fair share of problems that I could write about extensively as well. But 2007 will be the year that matters.
