Ok, Some of you might have played/contributed to Spore Battles. The result of that can be found in a previous topic.
Because of all the flames I got about that (no, some of it was nót critique), I decided not to continue on that.
So I wont.

But what I will do, Is make a totally new, and much more advanced version. With actual plans of attack, special attacks, a well thought combat system, and good graphics. But, this new quality will go at the cost of quantity.
So, I'm letting 10 species join this. Sentients only. If you would like your species to join in, apply now, and I will pick 10 out some time from now.

And I'm not going to answer ANY questions you post here now, until there are enough species I'd like to see.

Yeah cos I have this awsome creature that I made that I never posted...It lives on...well over gas giants...whatever...and It has big conductive bits on the top and It gathers static and electricity from the occasional huge storms (It can survive lightning bolts) and It looks kinda like a zeppelin and Is about the same size...that'd totally win In spore battles (unless of It popped...OH SHI)

K, well here's the deal:

Once again I will give all accepted entries 60 points to distribute.
These points will be distributable on a certain amount of attributes, which im going to make up as im writing this.

But, thats as much as its the same as the previous spore battles. This time each species will have some special attacks, attacks that only their species have. We will discuss the actual formules here together, to make sure it's all fair.

The game itself will, this time, be an actual game. Meaning that you'll fight better and better opponents, we'll have to think of an actual story for that. You'll probably also be able to obtain new powers as you get better.

It will be sideview again, so im still not going 3d. Too difficult for me =p

Well now, the attributes. If you know any better ones just post them, but dont expect me to agree just because you think I should. :p
1. Strength --> increases the actual damage.
2. Endurance --> increases armor and healthpoints.
3. Agility --> increases the amount of energy you have, and your hitting chance.
4. Speed --> increases the regeneration of your energy, and to decide who attacks first.
5. Concentration --> increases your healthpoints, and your hitting chance.
6. Wisdom --> increases your evasion/hitting chance, increases the regeneration of your healthpoints.

You will only lose healthpoints when you've lost your armor. Armor is tougher then health, but armor can not be regenerated.
Ok, some sample formulas:

Hit chance:
(Con + Agi) * 5 ( x 100%)

Health points:
(End + Con) * 5

Armor points:
End * 10

Damage:
Strength + (Strength * 10 / (enemy armor))



These are probably not all that we need, but there's some.
(I'm currently working on something for Sagan 4 though, so I can't start right away)

strangle enemy with tail (hopefully until they pop) while whacking them repeatedly off of the ground :D and thrashing any exposed part with the other tail...that sounds like quite a beating.

2 Attack: pull out Anubian shotgun(you can check it out on the Anubian thread) and attack gets +1 on top of previouse +3
next turn stat return to normal

spd,end, and str get +4 for that turn.

You should really add the Torpals, at least. It wouldn't be quite the same without them.

EDIT: Also, should we post ideas for special moves? How many should each creature get (I'd suggest two or three, along with their normal attack).

Well I think the stats of the ViS would be somewhere along these lines:

Strength - 1
Endurance - 3
Agility - 3
Speed - 3
Concentration - 25
Wisdom - 25

yea, will the game have an actual back ground..not a black screen. oh and music would be awesome! hmm what else....you know if you ever make another game after this something similar to battle field would be nice it would make dodging more interesting and can add more elements to the game like jumping and running.

No, I dont think Social skills would be very valuable, unless you'd fight in a party or something, but even then I'd rather be in a team with a Torpal then with a very social Omic ^^

And yes, there will be background this time, and you will actually be able to use tactics this time.

I've got some possible battle music. I've got that Matrix one, some not very Star Wars-sounding Star Wars music, some stuff from Final Fantasy and Far Cry, umm... what else... and a piece from LotR. My cousin's got some classic Anime battle stuff, but I don't know when I'll be able to get it.

If there were items, the CoR could be one. It would, like, leach health off of the opponent for a couple turns.

But I don't really expect items, so I'll sit back and watch.

a bit like before you start a battle, you pick a creature and 2 or 3 powerups you can use once in the battle. then it turns a bit strategic too.  :D

I want the creators of these species to create a "hero" of their species, including name, one-word-personality, and the reason why he is considered a "hero" (or "champion" or "master" or whatever).

And @ Daxx, do you have any pictures of Ichtians in exosuits?

So, next step:
I want the creators of these species to create a "hero" of their species, including name, one-word-personality, and the reason why he is considered a "hero" (or "champion" or "master" or whatever).

And @ Daxx, do you have any pictures of Ichtians in exosuits?

Leucotanelus-ula

An Icthian fighter pilot discovered unconscious in the wreckage of his fighter craft after the Battle of Thishen. A native of Alimar Secundus, the Icthian homeworld, it was always his dream to become a pilot. His name is often shortened to Leuc by those around him (especially the non-Icthians).
One of the first Icthians to be given the cure for the Halcyon parasite because of his proximity to where the cure was developed, he has assumed somewhat of an outcast status amongst his peers - as the only surviving Icthian from the battle, he was unfairly associated with the tragic loss of life and the oppression of Halcyon. On special request he was allowed to leave with ViS ships and assume a life away from others of his species.
He was never particularly bright for a member of the space fleet, but was an exceptional pilot who led a squadron aboard the CVF Audacity. His now-repaired fighter and personal belongings now travel with him wherever he goes; the amount of time he has spent among those of other races has led him to develop an enhancement of the traditional exosuit which is capable of extended use out of the water. His fighter has also undergone some considerable customisation to incorporate interfaces to alien equipment.

I'll choose Leuc, since I can't think of anyone else. He's turned to gladiatorial combat because it's a challenge and he likes the fame, especially since his skills as a fighter pilot have become obsolete in the face of the fall of the Icthian race. His people are scattered across the galaxy, those surviving adopting a nomadic and pessimistic mindset.

Unfortunately, I don't have any pictures of exosuits. If we could get someone to agree to do a concept sketch, I could try to drag out all the old references to their appearance.

Zinots is a Powerful hand to hand soldier with slight skill with firearms, with some of the highest scores in his ship.(transport, and that's like 700 soldiers). another ability of Zinots is his incredible speed. his success is probably due to his training in the old ways of weights, in fact in some fights his fights using them.

Okay, so I've looked and I can't find any detailed references to the suit description, so I'll just fill in the details now.

Imagine an Icthian inside a metal shell that makes him look like a bee. The ventral section of the suit has a large life-support system which swells out towards the back underneath. The large back fins are contained within this, pinned to the sides of the body (they're not needed for anything). On top, there are stylised plates reminiscent of an Icthian's dorsal plates which sweep forward to the head compartment. This is mostly transparent and panoramic to afford full vision to the Icthian's four eyes. Underneath the head where the lower jaw would be if Icthians had lower jaws is a vocaliser/translator and small set of speakers, just behind that but before the life support equipment (between the four dexterous tentacles) is the suit's computer. The back pair of tentacles rest on a control panel which controls the suit's movement and other functions with buttons and two tiny joysticks. The front pair of tentacles are linked to a manipulator system to which the suit's front legs are slaved. All four tentacles are covered in a filmy suit material (like a glove or sock).
Underneath, controlled by the suit's computer which translates the control signals into movement are the suit's six legs. These are quite insect-like, except for the front pair which are also built for grasping.

I hope that's enough, if you want any clarification please let me know, it might be a little difficult to visualise the whole thing.

I'm going to work on the combat system now, and in the mean time, I'd like you to post some idea's of possible story plots.

You know: Escape from a jail, Search and Destroy, James Bond-ish, plain Hack 'n Slash, whatever.

ok, I've currently devided the game into two parts:
-Skirmish: no story, you just pick a race and start fighting
-Story Mode: a story, you start with only 1 special attack, and you get more later. you can also unlock music and skirmish opponents here.

I'm currently working on the skirmish mode, because it's obviously the easiest, and probably most important because it's all about the combat system.
I'm working with stick figures at the moment, but once the system is done I'll start adding heroes one by one.

Is there anyone here who wants design a story + plot etc? Kinda like an rp story, only with a high amount of combat.

Alternatively, I could give each hero his/her/its own story, and you could make them, but these would be a lot shorter.

Or, I could do both..
But I don't really have the time to do all the planning.

well maybe everyone can have their own story, if you have a story where you fight,talk,fight,talk,fight and so on, then all you have to do is make different diolouge. each person can have their story so no restrictions. a story can be say 5,6 fights, with a boss.

Ok, I'm going to give 3 people a chance to add in an (unlockable) opponent in the skirmish game.
If you want your species to be added to the game that way, and you're not with the original 9, then here's what you can do:
post a pic here, and the best looking creatures (not the best pics) will be added.

And I'd also like the 9 people who are already in to think of 3 special attacks that their species might use.

Transmat (some sort of teleport-based attack)
Matter conversion (Proejectile attack that drains user's health)
Energy conversion (Recover health by using whatever energy usually gets used for attacking with)
Potential unlockable 4th: Liquidate. Instantly totally destroys one enemy.

Specials for Theen:

Orbital Blast (attack by an orbiting satellite)
Energy Sabre
Chitin Cuirass (ups armor at the expense of speed)
Unlockable: Starspear (Orbital Blast on crack)

Icthian specials

Target (increases accuracy/power of next attack)
Fusion Cannon (energy attack)
Primal Rage (raises Agility and Speed but lowers Wisdom, for the rest of the battle)

My suggestion is to make an unlockable fourth special for each creature (since if you're going with unlockables you may as well go all-out). If you think this is a good idea, here's my fourth (it's only included here because it would only be in-character for a successful combatant because Icthian nanite technology was very rare):
Nanite Armour (regenerates armour)

speed up: dosen't raise speed but agility and lower enemy accuracy slighytly or in this case hitting chance. by how much you decide, and it is tempoary for maybe...3 turns
all out: raises agility and power
flash shot, venom dart: slowly depletes enemies health for a set number of turns
 
i think you start out with one special and get more as you progress.

Hidden Shoulder Cannon Attack - Two shoulder cannons pop out from his back and attack the enemy. (take your pick of shoulder-cannon weaponry (http://www.gamingsteve.com/blab/index.php?topic=2215.msg188109#msg188109))

Adrenaline Rush - I dunno...They get stronger, or faster, or regain health or something...

lets see....

atomic bulge the snulk becomes bigger and his attacks are stronger. he's also a bit faster.

blind-fury-rage the snulk becomes a cloud of dust and punches every enemy it hits off the screen.

red-cooking-sludge the snulk fires a series of balls made of red sludge.they burn the enemy slowly.

uber attack:

counterattack-angerray the snulk fires a ray of pure energy to his enemy. the more damage the snulk has obtained, the powerfuller the ray.


maybe we should help p-luke and find some attributes for the game such as explosions and sound effects for your moves.

EDIT: i dont know exacly what kind of game it is becoming. is it a side scrolling shooter or a turn based fighting game like last time? TELL US P-LUKE!

meh, I don't really like sidescrolling games like that.
I mean.. I could probably make it, but right now the combat system is pretty much an rpg-style combat, just like the other one, but with more variation etc.
(for instance: combat stances aggressive/balanced/defensive, special attacks, items)

And your attacks seem ok, but I'll see if they're do-able when I get to adding them.
Right now I've got a basic selector for most species, but only the Snout of fully animated (I use him for testing and fixing the combat system)

Etiadar cannon: pulls out a shoulder cannon firing a powerful etiadar energy slug. may cause cause helth to slowly deplete due to radiation.

Cool beans, just a couple of issues for now since obviously that's a very very pre-alpha.

The stats of the Snout opponent seem to be incredibly variable. I once fought an opponent with 0 health and 0 armour. Not sure what's going on there or if that's even intended behaviour.
You need a "back to skirmish screen" button after fights, and a "back to main menu screen" button in the skirmish screen.
The colours of the bars at the top are a little strange (in the sense that most of the time they're black).
The attack button would be better if it were bigger. Similarly with the special buttons (even though they're not working yet).
Icthian is spelt incorrectly.
Stats appear to be able to go into negative numbers - also, you might want to have excess armour damage be applied to health.

But again, it's a good starting model (nice to see how it'll look) and some of those might well be known already. Great job!

The wrong stats (like 0 hp and 0 armor etc) are caused by random variables; once I've finished animating more creatures (currently working on the Torpal) I'll use the standard racial skills (perhaps with a very slight variance).

The bars going wild: I don't have a clue yet. At first the bars would just glide from 0 to 100, now they sometimes work the way they should, but I'm sure I'll spot the bug soon.

the buttons.. jup. Basically these buttons are just placeholders too, I think I'm going to design a hud in PS instead.

And yes, the armor's rest damage has to go to health. I also still have to make sure that health regenerates, and energy as well, although specials aint in yet.



But what I'm worried about most, right now, is that it seems to turn into a "just press the button and watch" game again. I added battle stances (which already work, btw), but still that's just a small thing. The special attacks might be enough, but I just don't know...
Items should prove interesting enough though, which will be in story mode.

Well, like the title says, you can add the Peskitorians as an unlockable opponent in Skirmish + a regular opponent in Story Mode.

i understand what you mean. copying movies frame for frame, while they all have 10 frames per second, and the movies lasts 10 seconds, takes lots of time. i'll take a look at what the progress is.

Torpal has got animations now, Yunimus has got animations (except for 1 attack), Ting is animated (who is momentarily the test person for skirmish), messed with the stats bars, they work a bit... but often they dont. armor "extra" damage is now subtracted from health, but it seems to be counting it onto armor instead. made a bigger button, though it's still just a placeholder. added Anubian selector, uncolored. Balanced combat stances.

I'm gonna leave animations for what they are now, there are enough heroes to test with. Next up is a "return to menu" button, special skills, and a skirmish enemy selection screen.

Okay, bug reporting time.

BUG 1
The bars at the top constantly cycle through, expanding all the way from nothing to full, cycling through all the colours before starting again. Fight is Torpal vs. Ting, and it's constant throughout the whole fight so far. I would supply screenshots, but they're largely worthless for the bug like this.

Addendum: behaviour stops when armour is reduced to zero, and then starts again the next round. During attack animation, if armour is zero, behaviour stops also.

Addendum 2: behaviour duplicated in health bar when health is damaged. When health is full, bar is constant full and green.

Addendum 3: Health of opponent reduced to 60, health bar is constant. On further health loss, behaviour resumes.
Addendum 3a: Health of opponent reduced to 24, health bar is constant. On further health loss, behaviour resumes.

BUG 2
Subsequent to winning a fight and returning to the menu, further fights work for one attack, before the return to menu button is displayed again and the fight cannot continue.

Crash skull into floor : +100 strength attack and 2 turns stun
try this:
Skullcracker : Fold your fists and bash into the enemy's head from the top.

I'll decide what the stats are, all you have to say is that. You're obviously not going to get extra health or extra turns because you hit his head.
And if you do think of something very powerfull, remember that you also have energy. if you pick 4 relatively weak attacks, then you could possibly keep using special attacks during the entire match. You could also choose a very devastating attack that requires all of your energy, keep that in mind.

Quadruple Mega-Punch - Umm, he punches with all four arms. Really hard. ...yeah.

Hidden Shoulder Cannon Attack 1 - Two shoulder cannons pop out from his back and fire at the enemy. (take your pick of shoulder-cannon weaponry (http://www.gamingsteve.com/blab/index.php?topic=2215.msg188109#msg188109))  HSCA1 is weaker, maybe just a laser or something, and takes up less energy

Hidden Shoulder Cannon Attack 2 - HSCA2 is the same as the first, but with a stronger weapon (rocket launcher, maybe, or flamethrower?) that takes up much more energy

super secret fourth unlockable attack:

Rip-enemy-arms-off-and-beat-them-with-it!!! - Self-explanatory. ;D

speed up: use the powers of the Enhance suit and speed up
all out: use the power of the suit and attack the enemy in a flurry of slashes
flash shot, venom dart:pull out a gun and fire a venom dart.
Eitadar grenade: throw a grenade filled with etiadar energy(it's light green with some light blue and magenta)and poison the enemy horribly.


Etiadar really mutates you but that would be to much of a hassle. if you can tell me what you'll do with the grenade.

Very nice work with the character selection screen. I like the slidey bars. However, I'm wondering why the bars don't do the same in combat (armour works fine, health doesn't).

In honesty, I think Pixel Based Sprites would do this a LOT more justice than the Vector Graphics right now, then it looks closer to a video game, and animation doesn't look so "liquid," I can help with this, but I need permission to begin working on such things though :(.

Here's what it's like at the moment:

health = (endurance + concentration) * 5
armor = endurance * 10
hit chance = (concentration + agility) * 5
energy restoration rate = (speed + wisdom) / 2
damage = strength
energy points = wisdom + speed + concentration

so:
strength = damage (100%)
endurance = health (50%), armor (100%)
agility = hit chance (50%)
speed = energy restoration rate (50%), energy points (33%)
concentration = health (50%), hit chance (50%), energy points (33%)
wisdom = energy restoration rate (50%), energy points (33%)

I don't really like it yet. What are your thoughts on this?

Hmm, any chance you could give me a quick tutorial on how to make that type of game (the random counter and stuff) and which version of flash to use? I have some ideas i'd like to try and add to it, but without the story mode. Also, i've got the front half of my corvalla made ready to animate XD


Either way, if you want a common enemy, look up my octibians from a while back. They'd make a great addition for a story mode as npbs...

And I have some ideas for you:

Vis is kind of dull, give him weaponry. Like, full-on weaponry.
Snulk should have a smash attack, since the pounch tends to miss.
Delay to damage untill the acctuall hit, otherwise it kind of spoils it XD

Well, if you only had to "want" to make a game to actually make it, then Spore would have been made by each and every one of us already, wouldn't it?  :P

Try reading some basic flash tutorials. Gaming is mostly actionscripting.

Where did you find tutorials, for example? The ones I get are in un-readable english... Once I get buttons and health working i'm set.

I've got quite lot of school test coming up, and the time I do allow myself to relax, will not be spent on Spore Battles, sorry.

I don't think I would. I'd prefer to see a functioning shell of a game rather than a bunch of story which doesn't have anything behind it.

I'm still not done, because I haven't been thinking about spore a lot lately (they should have released it months ago, then I'd be one of their greatest fans..)

However, I did make sóme progress.
Check the first page for the latest version.


edit: Strange, I've uploaded the right version but it looks like it's still loading the old version.
Maybe the database needs some time to replace it with the new file, I don't know. This version shouldn't have a "Story" button anywhere.

edit2: Jup, it's up.

edit3: I wonder if anyone WOULD respond if I completed it :/

Sorry, I've scrapped the sotry mode (At least for now).
It's so strange that you can still see it, it should be gone :s

Try refreshing a couple of times if you still see the old version (the version with story mode).

Just like the small fry enemies in adventure games. :)

Maybe you could use a creature like the Barroc's spores or Mon-Krai battle droids. ;D

By the way, one of the bgm's sound like the music from Xenosaga.

A bit off topic but: Since a spore game is being made, do you guys think a spore video can be made? Just a suggestion. :) We could make a poll, and the races that score the highest will be the ones in the vid, or all of them can just be put in(most of them could just be put in the background). Then we could post it on YouTube, our MySpace, etc... I'm not sure if other Sporesites already did that. A video with the all G.S.SporeForumCreatures would just be awesome to watch. If we ever have a vid like that here at GamingSteve, it would really show that we have a very strong Spore Community. ;) I know it's kinda unprobable, but one can still hope. :D :) :) :)
