It is a strange feeling, to agree with Flisch.

I am not meat, no mere arrangement of particles.  Nor am I some hypothetical untestable entity, piloting the intricate workings of a human body.  I am a wavefront, a pattern of energy propagating across the skin of the world, continually creating the next iteration of myself, a wavefront that can be recorded and replicated.

And in that creation, the predecessor is destroyed.

Oh, the analogy is not a perfect one.  The new and the old intermingle, there is, as you would call it, continuity.

Indeed, the concept of discontinuity horrifies me.

But not nearly as much as the concept of cessation, and over a long enough time period the probability of the destruction of a single physical form becomes a certainty.  Preservation, if not continuity, relies upon backups, upon copies, upon uncountable fail safes and plan Bs.

I am Neoadept, and I am Legion.

I prefer continuity, but uncertain continuity will always lose out against certain preservation.  50% just isn't enough for me.

Why can't I just have a spaceship with a failsafe transporter in case of imminent destruction. >_>

Also - Neo, prove it.

Prove what?  That I value the preservation of my essential self more than the continuity of said self?

Um.  I do.  That is an opinion.  If you feel otherwise you are free not create backups of yourself.

Why backups? Surely the world would be better with more than just one Neoadept.

Oh wait that already happened once.
Not a winner anymore.

Nicely said neo.

Also i'm pretty sure this:
I prefer continuity, but uncertain continuity will always lose out against certain preservation
Means you don't agree with Flisch, or am i missing something?

Flisch says things in such a weird way that I'm not exactly sure what his point is.  I think he's saying continuity doesn't matter?

I don't agree with that, but I value it less than others seem to, so there's a vague agreement going on.

I'm pretty sure he's saying continuity happens either way...

Now I am sure you are trolling me. I have explained it several times. How is it NOT the same consciousness? It has EXACTLY 100% the same thoughts, feelings, memories, everything as the other one.

But who was phone? Say you copied yourself. No death involved at any point. Do you as an extant consciousness therefore have control over both instances of yourself by virtue of them both being you?
*runs out of the room*

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

*comes back*

It is a strange feeling, to agree with Flisch.

There is, of course, a difference between having a laugh with someone, and having a laugh at their expense

Neo, while I agree that people are sort of like a wave, you can't duplicate that wave and call it the exact same wave. We experience continual consciousness because, while we are constantly losing neurone, it is a gradual rotation of the old into the new. A constant stream of insignificant cell death. As I said, this is why I would have myself be converted to a computer gradually, at the cellular level.

Now, killing all those cells simultaneously is not how we naturally experience consciousness. There has not been a single observed case of brain duplication, and even if there was, it'd would be difficult nigh-on impossible to prove it's the same consciousness, which is what I was asking you to do.

I'll take 50% over ?% when it comes to self preservation, thanks.
No way dude, you're trolling me.
