The story analogy doesn't work because a story isn't a physical object, but a human being is.
But the mind is not. And again, you guys keep saying how it's not you if the body is destroyed. I say it is still you, even if it's a new body. As I said, if I write the same story into a different book, it is still the same story.

All the different analogies people are using are getting everything confused. It's easier to stick to the teleporter idea and just tweak it a bit. Suppose the teleporter doesn't vapourise you when it scans you, so it creates a clone when you're still there. The clone clearly isn't you, and this doesn't change just because you died when you were scanned.
Guess what, for an infinitely small moment those two people are by all standards one and the same person consciousness, except that they're are locally apart, but same happens when you transportalizify. But after that moment, (Again the moment is indefinately small, just a single coordinate on the time line.) you two become two separate entities, as your mind changes from one another, slowly, like an ongoing story that advances, but that is written by two authors.* One of the clones will have the memory that his clone is standing to his left, and vice versa. But yes, for that wee tiny moment they're not only indistinguishable, but they are by all means and definition the same consciousness.

Basically, also answered Munchkin's post and Sam is now jumping to another point and is trying to divert from the topic at hand.

*This line will probably produce some witty posts like "bah so theyre different authors, you admit to them being different people now!!!!"

Flisch, you are essentially saying you believe in a soul which carries over between bodies.
Sam is basically right, he's just cranky.

Quite the contrary. It appears to me like you guys believe in a soul that is bound to the physical body. Once the body is destroyed the soul is freed and "dies" and a new soulless husk/new body with a new soul completely from scratch is created.

Consciousness is bound to the physical body! Where did you think it came from?
Not a winner anymore.

You make no sense.

To a physical body. The text clearly states that all the memories and stuff are being transplanted onto the new body, so the consciousness has been transfered to a new physical host.

But as we keep saying, there is no continuity!

Is there a conscious continuity when you go to sleep?

Because, barring lucid dreams, I think not.

This is the silliest argument I've seen today.

"Continuity" in itself is a silly argument. Why does there need to be continuity for a consciousness to be the same?

Because, barring lucid dreams, I think not.

The mind isn't destroyed or even shut down when you sleep, it's still active the whole time, ask any neuroscientist.

When you destory the brain the mind must go with it, there is nowhere for it to be suspended or held after that, you can't avoid the fact that you have to create a new mind no-matter how indistinguisable from the old one.

If you understand physics you should know how the same thing could hypothetically happen with an electron between source and detector, personally i think this is a better analogy than books.

And if you don't like it ultimatum, then you can git out.
i hope you get the southpark refrence, if not i may of accidentally been too harsh

Confirmed: Flisch is wrong.

With that out of the way, Flisch, please explain to me your reasoning why you don't die when you kill yourself as long as you duplicate yourself first. It is presently my understanding that people die when they are killed.

Flisch said he refuses to answer that question when it's predeceded by the statement that he's wrong, so he answered me on MSN instead. Now, there are stuff I need to do, so I was wondering if you wanted to reply to him in any way.

Flisch sanoo (21:50)
oh you dont die when you duplicate yourself AFTER you disintegrate yourself
Flisch sanoo (21:51)
infact duplicating yourself before it basically would create another individual, youd have to do it at the same time or AFTER the disintegration part
to have no branching consciousness
Flisch sanoo (21:51)
but the text didnt say youre duplicated first
