PC Games / Infinity: Battlescape
« on: November 11, 2015, 05:20:19 pm »
Waaay back around 2008 or so, I was following the development of a game by one guy (Flavien Brebion) with an idea for a space MMO called Infinity: The Quest for Earth. He was working on building an engine capable of procedural generation of a to-scale galaxy and seamless planet-to-space transitions.

Well, the MMO was just too ambitious of a goal for one person in his spare time, so he focused on just building the engine. In 2010 he and another guy founded I-Novae Studios and built up a small team of people (still working in their spare time) that were able to build up the engine further. They dialed back their goal a bit and are now working on releasing an actual game called Infinity: Battlescape. A Kickstarter began a few weeks ago. If it succeeds, they'll be able to work on releasing this game full time.

Basically it's a space game set in a single solar system where factions fight for control of points of interest ("Battlescapes") both in space and on the ground. The points of interest and NPC ships generate resources that players allocate to new, bigger ships or defenses.

Another "epic space game" Kickstarter? What makes this one special?
  • Seamless planet landing is something promised by many but delivered by almost none. The closest in a modern game is that soon you can land on rocky planets in Elite: Dangerous. Even in the I-Novae engine prototype, this is already working. For any celestial body. There are lots of videos showing it off.
  • Rather than a wide open sandbox, this game will be more goal-oriented. Think of it like a large arena shooter, where factions fight for control of bases and resources. Probably more similar to Planetside than EVE Online.

I thought I saw a thread for this, but searching turned up nothing.

It's on sale today, and as I was wondering if I should buy it I recalled when I played X3. I remember I played it for a little, did a few quests, but it just took so long for anything to happen that I lost interest. I was very surprised to see I played it for over 50 hours, when I remember so little of it.

I am kind of interested in this but have some questions for those who have it:
- Does it play at a similar pace to X3?
- I want to play in open online mode but wonder if piracy feels as much like griefing as, say, Eve Online did.

Thought I'd just pop in to say that this looks awesome.

You can definitely tell it was directed by J.J. Abrams. (Not a bad thing.)

PC Games / Games you own but have never played

I was looking at my Steam library and I realized I have quite a few of these, but is it a common thing? And how common?
Here's my list of games I've either never played or have started once for a few minutes then not touched since then:

ARMA 2/Operation Arrowhead *
Assassin's Creed Brotherhood *
Assassin's Creed Revelations *
Batman: Arkham City *
Carrier Command: Gaea Mission *
C & C: Red Alert 3 - Uprising
Crysis 2 *
Dead Space 3
Deus Ex: Invisible War
Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved
Lugaru HD
Medal of Honor: Hobo Beard Edition
Penumbra: Overture
Sam & Max 302 to 305
Samorost 2
Spiral Knights
The Sims 3*
Trine 2 *

* means I plan to play these eventually or when I finish the preceding game in the series.

21. Huh. What about you?

Old story- One year when I was in High School the locker I was assigned still had stuff in it. Most of it was unassuming school papers but I kept the more... interesting stuff.
This is a story that was included in the pile. Written, presumably, in 2006. I only just now transcribed it with odd capitalization and on/off ghetto spelling intact.

Where'd this come from?

It's a new top down spell-sling action game.
Read this article. It explains how the game works perfectly.

There's a demo on Steam if you want to try it out.

Well not really. But I might as well.

On June 30, 2011 I'm leaving for Cape Town, South Africa on my Mission. I'll be there for two years during which time there will be no computers save for e-mail once a week, no books other than scriptures and a very small list of Church books, no music save for Church music, no TV and no news except for what the members see fit to tell us. All day most days of the week will be spent either preaching the Gospel, studying the Gospel, or serving those in need of service. As far as I know.

I'm so excited!

A year or so ago I was playing Shadow of Chernobyl. While I enjoyed it a lot (it is one of the most atmospheric games I've ever played) there were game-stopping bugs. Clear Sky was also moderately enjoyable but the faction system just felt kind of awkward and not very fun.

My real question is: is Call of Pripyat an improvement to these? Worth buying?

What's this? Another game based on custom music? I am immediately drawn to at least try it out.

There are no videos, and from the screenshots I'm skeptical but I'm downloading the demo now anyway.

(Right after my get my TF2 on no what im sayin.......)

We must really not care about movies. This one is out already and doesn't even have a topic about it.
I saw it last night. My mini-review follows.

It's as bad as you thought it would be, and then a little worse.
On the bright side, it helps you realize how awesome the actual series was.

In related news, here's something fun to read:

Everything Else / Homestuck *thpoilerth*
« on: May 29, 2010, 11:20:32 am »
Everything after page 1 of this thread may very well have UNMARKED SPOILERS. Just go read the comic!

A young man stands in his bedroom. It just so happens that today,
the 13th of April, is this young man's birthday. Though it was
thirteen years ago he was given life, it is only today he will be
given a name!

What will the name of this young man be?

And so starts Homestuck, the latest in a series of MS Paint Adventures (actually drawn in Photoshop from day 2). This thing only gets more awesome as it goes on and man, it's barely halfway over! Anyway you should read it but start on page 1 or you'll be lost. You might be lost anyways but at least you can appreciate how convoluted it is. That's my favorite thing about it, actually. Dozens of dots, dozens of themes, each connected by a throwback line. And it will all kind of fit together like some kind of cocoon of exquisite lies. Kind of like Lost, except "funny, and not as heavy handed and dour all the time."

Yes I did start this thread so I can gush about how awesome it is.

Previous poll results:
"Is Homestuck awesome?"
Yes        19 (33.3%)
Yes        10 (17.9%)
YES!      27 (48.2%)

Exactly what it says on the tin. In honor of Samog's Community Army in which I first discovered Dwarf Fortress waaay back in 2006, here is my fortress. Or rather, here will be my fortress, and you will die horribly be the hero!

Just post your name and preferred profession and I'll dwarfify you when there's a free dwarf.

Modular means my fortress will be composed only of 9x9 squares in a grid connected by 3-or-1-wide passageways, repurposed depending on what I need.

And You get to choose the location and fortress name!
