Spore 2?
« on: July 03, 2012, 03:37:35 am »
So do you think there will ever be a Spore 2?

Or do you think Spore was a one time shot and will not be a series of games like Sim City or The Sims but more like one time games like Sim Isle or Sim Ant?

There has been more than enough time to start developing a sepal. Note that I am not counting expansion packs or Darkspore either.

Well, sense we're insistent on kicking the dead horse here, I'll be brutally honest.
No.
EA and Maxis screwed up bigtime with the first Spore - we know it, they know it, everybody knows it. Hell, I liked the game, but that still doesn't excuse butchering it's original concept into a shallow kiddie game. And knowing EA, after a failure that immense, they're not going to go for a round two and fix anything because, well, it's EA for cryin' out loud.
TL:DR I'd like to see Spore 2 but I strongly feel it ain't happenin'.

Probably not. If Spore had come out the gates being amazing, widely accepted and loved ...maybe... but it failed. I don't think it was the game so much as the way EA handled it's distribution. Releasing it with DRM killed it yet look at all the games now that have DRM and no one cares. It's a shame, I liked the game but I think there must have been some behind the scenes drama. I mean Will left after the release and most of the Spore staff is gone too. Kind of sad really.

I think that years from now, when the technology improves somewhere down the line, (and when EA is defeated and laid to waste) maybe there will be a successor.

Spore has it's own cult following, just not as much as the Sims. And even that has little chance of anyone caring if it gets another sequel. The way EA has handled it's franchises through it's horrible digital distribution, micro-transactions, and casual iterations on mobile devices for the sake of making lots of money pretty much kills any chance there will be any demand for a Spore 2 from us. And I'm pretty sure EA is smart enough to know that it won't be enough to make them lots of money.

It's a miracle we have a new Sim City coming out. But that is only because it has a legacy worthy of a reboot. But even then, EA finds a way to screw the hype and turn off any gamer by forcing you to use Origin and making you play online even though it's a single player game. That practice and behavior on EA's part kills any hope anyone will care for Spore 2.

Sam is basically right, he's just cranky.

Those Monsters! They have no idea how to run a company!

But yeah.  Spore's dead, buddy.  Time to move on.
Probably not a Goat, either.

Normally you'd be right, but EA pretty much just milks everything they can in the worst ways possible. Making money as a company is one thing, making a bunch of little crap things (DLCCCCCCCCC) and expecting people to buy them is another. Heck, look at ME3 and the day one "From Ashes" DLC. They did that only to make money; they could have thrown that in with the regular game, but no. $15 DLC, BABY!

Oh well. I figured so.

I suppose the next question is do you think there will be a Spore-like game in the future?

Many games have inspired other games from other companies. The core idea of Spore is a good one, however the implementation was a flop (even if the editors were amazing).

I feel sorry for Spore since there was so much cool stuff and some state of the art things. But I suppose money is always bottom-line for big corporations like EA.

Thus do you think an Indie Game Company would make a "spiritual successor" to Spore?

EDIT: For instance 0AD is looking awesome and would be considered more or less the "spiritual successor" to the original Age of Empires even though its not being done by Microsoft.

Things like Scribblenauts and Little Big Planet have grabbed onto the highly customizable aspect.  I'm not aware of anything taking on the single cell to galactic empire angle, but I don't really pay attention to game news.
Probably not a Goat, either.

It's a possibility, but not likely. It largely depends on the current trends in the gaming industry. And right now, everything seems to gravitate to tried and true RPGs, FPS, and Sports.

EA owns the rights, and are not likely to relinquish them without an unreasonable sum or some horrible arm-twisting agreement.
After the first Spore, they're not likely going to take that risk again, not when they can pursue other more successful game series (or just follow the usual gaming trends).

Spore 2 could work, but it would really have to be under a different name, and a different leadership to truly work. As much as Spore needed the simulation aspect, it also heavily needed the involvement aspect that can't truly be given in a game that amounts to a vivid skin pulled over a framework skeleton. When you look at it, the Sims has always been a rather skeletal system but padded with charming feedback and polish. It works because we can narrate our own story between the lines. Spore couldn't work like that, as we are creating and learning entirely new stuff as we go along. It isn't enough to assume some will narrate their own story between the lines, the players themselves want to be directly stimulated with a less pre-meditated, heavily restricted system, and tinker with the outcomes. Maxis specialises in 'dollhouse' simulation, and Spore was beyond that scope, though perhaps they could have made a mean Tribe or maybe Civ stage. The creature phase, I think, was one of the most anticipated aspects of the game. Just the first-hand exploration of an alien world, with that degree of creativity, was a huge selling point for most. Just that phase done well enough could be a colossal success, but finding the sweet spot would probably be hellish.

There is a gaping lack of games with an emphasis on freestyle creation (that has a real impact), and the ones that get it right, are often shunted forwards to sleeper hit / cult idol status. As it stands with the current technology, it's too much of a risk of time, money and manpower to delve too far into. At least when the staples of generic gaming are right there and waiting to be milked some more. Eventually, yeah, we'll see slivers of the game we all wanted elsewhere, but right now, nothing seems to be on the horizon.

In the next few decades, probably.

Depends on how they execute it, really.

Spore became too shallow, covering too many places at once.

Maybe doing it via the phases would have worked. Maybe not.
