Spore: General / Icon Artist Request
« on: October 11, 2008, 12:42:34 pm »
Perhaps the exchange might also be a good place to post this... but here's the deal...

The following folders in "My Documents" are Spore related but they look boring and normal. I tried to make my own icons to look like the Sporepedia-ish blue theme (blue folders with symbols relating to their functions) but I'm not really an icon artist. Do we have anyone out there wanting to make some? Mac users have a nifty Spore theme now.

My Spore Creations

'course I'm also still using XP (so I want less shiny icons). Anyone understand what I'm talking about or should I go back to doodling like a crazy person in the corner?

Spore: General / Non-Combat Space Improvements Discussion
« on: September 05, 2008, 12:50:37 pm »
Aside from the widely discussed "OMG I'm constantly attacked" and related problems, I think there's room for other improvements in space phase. Mainly the minimap.

The game is huge, very much so, and it's easy to get lost when you have nearly two dozen different star systems, many of which with more than one colonized world.

Your empire should not change color on a whim. I don't know if this is a bug, but when I reload space game from having closed the program my empire is often a different color, as are the other people around me. This makes knowing who is who and what's yours very hard. Not to mention being recolored as my previous enemies color is bad. Maybe you should be able to pick your color when you start space.
Black Holes/Worm Holes are difficult to keep track of. They have realistic to our earth names, but it's hard to remember Is2345c connects to 7c9873 even more than it's difficult to keep track of your own planets. There needs to be a better way to track how they link up after you've been to them. They show an arrow, but when it goes through the center of the galaxy it's impossible to tell where it goes. This gets more confusing when you take Wormhole 1 to 2, to 3, to 4, to 5 and then try to go home. By then your bread crumb trail doesn't go all the way back.
Galactic Map Quest Maybe I'm just lazy, but I frequently take the same route over and over and over gathering spice. It'd be nice to be able to either pre-program this (create a route and be able to select it and have it run) or at least be able to draw a "galactic road" between some of your systems even if it's only visual and not auto-travel.
Captain's Log Call me crazy, but when I find some off the beaten path planet that buys red spice, of which I have thousands, for 40,000$ a pop I'm all over that. The thing is, by the time I collect said spice, I forget where the planet is. Either an in game "notepad" or a way to leave notations on the map would be nice. (Sell red spice here)
Collecting Spice Having spoke with several others, this seems to be a bigger complaint for them than the above. I don't see it as a big deal, but when you have 5 planets in the same system making spice, it would be nice if you didn't have to visit them all one at a time and the have to go to even more solar systems.[Not to mention having some sort of auto-spice collection or galactic Fort Knox to store it in. Maybe then pirates could only attack one, or a few places?]
Uber turret(s) should not need my help. After you've polped a few of these suckers down, I really shouldn't need to come back when all I do is SIT THERE and watch the pirates get shot down. No buildings are destroyed, nothing is stolen, nothing is even damaged. Maybe your people should only call you when they need you, after all you just spent all that money on their defense.
Spice Color Indicator The map could have a new option to view numbers next to stars, showing the colors of spice in the system and a numeric scale of the quantity.
Colony Buildings Buildings colonies is great, but gets tedious. Especially when you have to go select your buildings again from the sporepedia every time. Perhaps a "Set this as my default building of this type" option. Also, a template or two for placing colonies would be nice. (Thanks SporeForSure)
Colony AutonomyIt's enough to place the buildings once, but going back each time your terraform or are attack gets to be a chore. Maybe you could have a "rebuild previous buildings" after an attack button, and it could charge you the money and place the buildings without going into the planner.
Expanded Diplomacy: Who is who Being allied with The Green and The Yellow is fun, until they go to war with each other. Picking a side is generally easy enough, but a way to ask them to negotiate would be nice, or, a way to see who they're at war with before you go getting each other's names tattooed on your ship. Maybe some kind of relationship web? Your allies could even introduce other races to you, or recommend other race's extermination. This may require more complex AI logic though.
Expanded Diplomacy: Agreements Trade, ally, destroy is kind of a short list of options. "Non-Aggression Pact" "Trade Embargo" "Defensive Pact" sound like a few things that would really open up a lot more options. On the combat side of this, there's no way to really force other races to pay YOU tribute money, and what about protection money? Galactic mafia needs shoes too.
Quick Zoom From inter-system view to planet surface without excessive mouse wheel scrolling. A one button push would be nice. (Thanks Veraal)
Cargo Bay Sorting Ability to re-arrange items or sort them. (Thanks Rusted)
Museums Instead of zoo planets (which are for organics), a place to collect artifacts at for display. Being able to display your enemies/allies vehicles or building somewhere would be cool too, especially after you drive them extinct :)

Please feel free to add more suggestions and discuss. In the mean time, I'm drawing my empire on paper DX While it's certainly possible to live without much of this (unlike some of the other combat problems people have had) a lot of it would make the game easier for younger players and new players, and I think adjust the learning curve back toward the other phases.

Spore: General / *Spoilers* A warning about weapons
« on: September 05, 2008, 02:36:08 am »
The planet destroyer makes EVERYONE very unhappy with you. Even your closest friends. You will lose trade routes, friendships, and alliances. Hope whoever you're nuking is worth the loss of spice nodes, friends, and sporebucks!

No you can not use it on your homeworld or on stars. You must land on the planet first.

Spore: General / Taking screen shots in game?
« on: September 04, 2008, 10:07:00 am »
I was playing Spore on a mac and found it very hard to take screen shots. I had to use a 3rd party program to do it.

How do you take screen shots on a Mac in spore? Or is there some in game way to do it.

(I normally use a PC but since I live in the US I don't have spore yet. :( However, I do know people that have it, but it's not on PC!)

Spore: General / Planet Shopping (location location...)
« on: August 17, 2008, 12:29:50 pm »
So you boot up Spore and get ready to jump in the first time, are you going to look around for a planet to start on or just click somewhere and go for it?

What kind of interstellar real estate are you going for? Multiple star system, certain planet look, location in the galaxy?

Personally I want a pretty alien looking world. Something far on the edge of the galaxy.

I can't seem to find this posted already, but it is fairly new.
I found it at SpaceOddity's blog:
Who found it at:

As a student going into game design I found these very interesting. It’s all mostly slides, so if you’re looking for new gameplay info you will most likely be bored. (The music thing is a bit dull because there's no shiny pictures, but there's pictures in the next two presentations. I found it all very entertaining.)

However, there is a wealth of behind the scene How’d they do that? Info in there that I soaked up like a sponge.

There's some stuff in there like fur and feathers as a skin, a lot of really neat stuff in the second one about animation. Stuff they didn't expect, how everything works behind the scenes. Also, the game has apparently changed some since the CC was released (they said part stats are somewhat different now, and the icons for some things are slightly different. The parts themselves are the same.)

Recommend watching them.

(please someone tell me how to put the videos in the message or do it in a reply XD)

Spore: Sporepedia Exchange / Galactic Ant Colony! (Join up SimANT fans!)
« on: August 15, 2008, 11:42:50 pm »
Ok so I loved SimANT back in the day. I still play it pretty often, and I want to make a massive intergalactic colony of alien-ants! The thing is, it gets kind of boring if I make all of them, and there have to be others out there who like ants or SimANT!
So I'm looking for a few good ant-people!

Basically your goal is: Make at least one "ant-ish" creature. Send it to me, post it or link the sporepedia entry! Eventually I will make them a sporecast.

*There are lots of good insect parts (Gobsterclaw mouth, antenna, compound eyes) to make realistic ants. They DO NOT need to look earth made!
*Real life recreations of ants are welcome, but go outside the box! Try to go as wild as you can with your alien ants, while still having somewhat of a noticeable insect quality. (Feathered ants? Octopus ants? Splice an ant with your favorite creation!)
*Descriptions are nice! But not required.
     *There's no minimum requirements.

And there's one last thing (optional!) ant colonies have roles for their ants. Feel free to tell us how your ant fits into the colony (or maybe it doesn't! Gasp)

Is it a? (just to start, come up with whatever you see fit)
    soldier (military)
    worker (economic)
    breeder (religious)

    spider (oh noes)
    antlion (ah the hole!)

Please tag any ant with "GalaticAntSwarm"!
(Colony members do not have to be specifically made for this to join up. However, please add the tag if able!)

Spore: General / Gateway Game
« on: July 14, 2008, 09:47:22 am »
Since spore covers so many phases similar to other games, do you think it will become a "gateway game" and cause people to try different genres outside of what they've tried before?

Or will they do the opposite and only play phases they're more familiar with?

Games like "bejeweled" and "the sims" are often blamed for introducing 'house wives' to gaming.  Will Spore introduce more "non-gamers" and casual gamers to games and other genres as well?

A couple people have mentioned this in threads before, but I don't think we've really discussed this beyond the scope of Spore. I don't expect to see an explosion of new Civ4 players for example, just because of Spore's civ phase. There might be people that go "hey, this kind of game is fun" and try some less-casual RTS style games though. What do you think?

Spore: Sporepedia Exchange / Advanced Critique Exchange
« on: July 11, 2008, 08:55:43 am »
Ok so the purpose of this would be to do more than go "Hey that creature is cool" or "I really like those colors". I've taken a lot of art classes over the years, and I would like to see more advanced comments on peoples creatures. You know, stuff more thought out like "The colors you used really make his limbs pop out" or "I really like your use of the flower detail here".

I know a few of people do this already, but I was thinking of making a list of people. You pick 5 of each persons creatures a write comments on those creatures, then your name would be added to the list.

Every 6-12 hours we could resort the list so that it's not always in the same order, and you do it again picking new creatures (I realize eventually you might run out of creatures on some people to comment on). Hopefully this will encourage better design though feedback.

Would anyone be interested in doing something like that? Or am I just crazy XD

I'm pretty sure there isn't a post like this here or on the exchange. I know a few people have offered critique before but not an exchange of comments.

Spore: General / Full Spore: Removing creatures and objects?
« on: June 23, 2008, 04:25:32 am »
Ok I was thinking, the full version comes with some default offline material on cd (That may or may not be in .png or a compiled file.) What would happen if you tried to remove all this content and say, only had 1-2 creature types? That would be weird, but I doubt it would be possible.

Idea came from this from GameFAQs/SanFrancisco demo:

"In the tribal stage all the tribes are different species. Will said while this is scientifically unlikely, it makes the gameplay more interesting since you can distinguish other races more easily, since you have to manage individual units at that level (it plays like an rts). It also is more aesthetically pleasing to have unique races."

Spore: General / Comments on Sporepedia
« on: June 16, 2008, 04:18:54 pm »
I've noticed that Sporepedia uses a system where comments on User's creations have to be approved by said user before being listed.

Are comments from people with the Free Trial (that made an account before it was closed off) showing up on those with the full version? (none of mine seem to be).

Since none of my creatures made it up, are those with free trial version creatures online receiving comments to approve?
