Title: The little things...
Post by: martyk on November 22, 2008, 11:44:46 am
I've been thinking.  Looking back on my life, some of the things in my life that most define who I am were started off with increadibly simple events.  Thinking about it, it really is amazing that such small things could have such a huge effect, but they have.  So I was thinking, if this is the case for me, what about you guys?  What are some of the little things that have made you who you are today?

Some examples for me are:

If I hadn't have gone to Zellars with my mom almost 6 years ago, walked over to the tech area an peaked inside the bargain bin, spotting Star Wars Galaxies on sale, I would not have bought the game that really made me a gamer, nor would I have had all those experiences that netted me one of my best friends.

If my sister and I had not decided to put on a little show for my parents 8 years ago, and had I not opted to lipsync to a song using a guitar as a prop, I would have never had that kick start to get me interested in the instrument, and I would never have learnt to play it.

And, had a good friend of mine not opted to show me the GDC 05 video, I would not be here today and would probably be still blissfully unaware of the internet community.

If it weren't for the fact that I liked the magazine "National Geographic Kids" several years ago, I never would have found wikipedia and become addicted to the internet.

If I did not need to search for mushroom spores of the internet, I would've never found spore, nor this community and thus not Sagan4, thus I would still have the drawing capability of a 4year old.

If it wasn't for the original Playstation and Spyro the Dragon I would have never gotten into video games.

If either of my parents decided not to be in a college performance of the musical Pirates of Penzance, I wouldn't exist. :P

If my dad had never started playing Call of Duty, I would have never have been a gamer, because he showed me how to play, and eventuly I was able to play the whole thing myself.

If I had not started playing runescape, I would have never seen the spore thread on their forums. Therefore, I would have not be able to know about this community. So, thus, I owe a lot to that crappy, crappy game.

If I haven't gotten tired of going outside to play all day long, I would have not gotten into playing Battle City on the SNES, which really pulled me into playing videogames, which is how I learned about Red Alert, which is one of the reasons why I discovered The Sims series, which would eventually lead me into checking out it's Wikipaedia page, which would link me to another Wiki page about another Maxis game called SPORE, which would lead me to finding out about Gamingsteve's messageboard, which convinced me to become an avid lurker in Spore General, which would then lead me to officially registering and entering the Spore RP and Creation corners, which would lead to the creation of my first electronically documented race supposedly for use in SPORE, which would lead me to my rediscovery of Photobucket and the rest of the forums, among other places in the net which I had no idea existed.

Honestly, they probably took their money and went straight to the local drug dealer and blew it all on blow. Heck if they just cut out the middle man and were paid in drugs I'd not be suprised one little bit.

If my dad (curse his name) hadn't gotten me to do my talk on aviation in year 5, I probably wouldn't be the aviation nut I am today.

oh, you don't know what it is?

it's this really cool thing that gives you loads of priviliges on the internet, like being a moderator on a forum.

If my computer hadn't crashed whilst installing an EA game (can't remember which one,) I wouldn't have had to install it again, wouldn't have been forced to reading upcoming releases through boredom, wouldn't have found out about spore, wouldn't have come here.

Well...if i had never seen the GDC o5 video of Spore.

I would of never googled spore

And never found gamingsteve

And that means i would not of seen Gauph post this in the off topic topic

http://www.foddy.net/Athletics.html (http://www.foddy.net/Athletics.html)

That means i wouldn't of played it.

And that means i would have never clicked an ad there

Which actually lead me on to actually win 200$

Funny how such a small decision can have a large impact later.

You actually won money from clicking on an internet ad?

 :o

Well not from the ad itself.

It took me to a site and i ALMOST left. Because as far as internet schemes go i have seen it all. But upon doing research i found this site was legit. Anyway the site at hand is a game site where people compete for prizes. They have these games that they switch out each day, Anyway theirs 3 ways to win.

One: Have the highest score on a game at the end of a day. It was really close but i won it on a shooting game. I got to choose between a PSP i think an ipod, a digital camera or a 200 dollar visa gift card. I chose the 200$ gift card. You can only win a daily prize every 45 days in order to be fair. I was lucky the guy that almost beat me has already won 7 of those gift cards. He was a vet

Second: Even if you win a daily prize you should keep playing because whoever gets the most daily wins in one month gets a prize. The prize for this month is a Nintendo Wii.

Third: Once your a member for 45 days you are allowed to challenge people. Whoever wins the most challenges in a month gets a prize. But the challenges have to be unique so you can't challenge the same person over and over. This months challenge prize is a Nintendo wii AND a 200 dollar visa gift card.

Now the catches, the site is littered with ads and you see an ad after each game. You also have to install something of theirs which will give you a maximum of 4 pop up ads based on things you have been searching. While annoying its pretty worth it to me. Whats more i am pretty sure only US residents can win the prizes. In order to receive your prize you have to upload a photo of yourself, Send them a copy of a photo idea to check your age and compare to your uploaded photo. Fill out your shipping address info and phone number, Call their number and give them that info FROM the phone number you put in your account info. And when you receive your prize in order to be eligible to win another you have to upload a photo of yourself holding the prize and give a short testimony.

The games themselves are pretty simple browser games. Some are luck some are skill many are both. Most of the time you have 60 seconds to get the highest score possible but in some games you have a health bar instead.

I do have to email them a copy of a unexpired photo id before they can send me my prize. Mines expired but i have a week to do so so i gotta go Wednesday and get one.

I would post the site (or actually make a topic for it) But I'm not sure i am allowed since its almost advertising it.

EDIT: Holy crap that post was much longer then i intended!. Sorry!
