A quick way to calibrate people's tastes on here and maybe get some discussions going...

(I'll answer separately so it's easier to cut and paste the questions)

1) First album you owned/purchased?

2) Most recent album you purchased?

3) First live show?

4) Most recent live show?

5) Most overrated musician?

6) Most underrated musician?

7) What's your musical guilty pleasure (i.e. name a musician/group that your gut tells you you shouldn't like, but you do anyway)?

8 ) Let's say you could go back in time and bring any one dead musician into present times? Who would you pick?

9) What's your poster-child "band that broke up too soon"?

10) Pick your dream band -- at the very least, vocalist, guitar, bass, drums. If you want to include a second guitarist, keyboards, theremin, lute, xylophone, whatnot... live it up, but you gotta start with the basics.

11) Name one cover version of a song that whups the ass of the original.

12) Speaking of covers, name a song that always struck you as a great song if done by someone else.

13) Pick a dream collaboration, i.e. artist A working with artist B.

14) Best album cover art? (No Spinal Tap references)

15) Fat Elvis or skinny Elvis?

16) If all four Beatles were still alive, would they have cashed in on a Millenium reunion concert?

17) Will there EVER be a more unrealistic movie moment than Peter Frampton and the Bee Gees beating up Aerosmith in the "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" movie?

18) Bono has been mentioned as a candidate to head the World Bank. Would you let Bono manage YOUR finances?

19) Would you let MC Hammer manage your finances?

20) Lastly, the infamous "desert island" question -- pick five CDs you'd take with you to a desert island. To add to degree of difficulty, no Greatest Hits allowed.

Naturally, if I wrote the questions, I have opinions on most of the answers.... Here goes...

1) First album you owned/purchased?

First that I can definitely recall was "Double Platinum" by KISS, though there was also a Beatles B-sides compliation that came out around '76 or so that my dad got me... probably to convince me to stop listening to KISS...  ;)

2) Most recent album you purchased?

These days, I'm more into individual songs via iTunes, but I did pick up the new U2 "How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb".

3) First live show?

OK... this is somewhat humiliating. The first show I was ever dragged to was Shaun Freakin' Cassidy. The first one I actually went to of my own free will was U2, circa "The Unforgettable Fire"

4) Most recent live show?

That would be the Finn Brothers with fellow Kiwi Bic Runga opening up.

5) Most overrated musician?

I like Bob Dylan, but even so I think people have an inflated sense of his music. OK... he's a poet, he's a genius... fine. But there's an awful lot of strumming the same two chords for seven minutes.

6) Most underrated musician?

Combined entry for Neil and Tim Finn (see #4 above). Here in the US, they're pretty much filed under One Hit Wonder (Neil started Crowded House -- "hey now, hey now, don't dream it's over") but between Crowded House, Split Enz, and their collective solo work, they've got about 15-20 albums worth of material, most of it great. Neil's sound in particular is very Beatles-influenced.

7) What's your musical guilty pleasure (i.e. name a musician/group that your gut tells you you shouldn't like, but you do anyway)?

KISS is one. It's unrelentingly cheesy and stupid, but since I grew up with it, it'll always have a soft spot in my heart. The other big one would be Will Smith -- on some analytical level, I ought to hate him (what the f... do I care what he thinks about Miami) but I still listen anyway.

8 ) Let's say you could go back in time and bring any one dead musician into present times? Who would you pick?

John Lennon. The guitar guys (Hendrix, SRV) are tempting, but something makes me think John Lennon would be able to write more compelling music.

9) What's your poster-child "band that broke up too soon"?

Probably the Police. It seemed like they were just hitting their stride with Ghost In the Machine and Synchronicity and then Sting had to go do his jazz noodling. Honorable mention to the aforementioned Crowded House, though most people wouldn't be familiar with their albums.

10) Pick your dream band -- at the very least, vocalist, guitar, bass, drums. If you want to include a second guitarist, keyboards, theremin, lute, xylophone, whatnot... live it up, but you gotta start with the basics.

(Will come back and re-edit the rest later.... gotta go to lunch)

They would all be Porn VCD's, but since this is a musical questionaire I'll pick some albums, in no particular order.

Soundgarden - Superunknown
Nirvana - From the Muddy banks of Wishkan
Pink Floyd - The wall
The Procalimers - Sunshine on Leith
Bob Marley and the Wailers - Legends

Then I would sneek a lot more onto the Island in the same fashion as a drug dealer entering the UK.

8 ) Let's say you could go back in time and bring any one dead musician into present times? Who would you pick?

Uuuhhhh... *Scratches head* I have no idea to be honest...

9) What's your poster-child "band that broke up too soon"?

Don't really have one. But I bet a do. I just can't think of any right now.

10) Pick your dream band -- at the very least, vocalist, guitar, bass, drums. If you want to include a second guitarist, keyboards, theremin, lute, xylophone, whatnot... live it up, but you gotta start with the basics.

Oh right, well we've gotta have old Bill Leeb on the bass lines. Oh yes. I'ld like the Skinny Puppy vocalist to do vocals. Maybe Ronan Harris could write them, oh what a brilliant track Airships is.
Well Rhys Fulber will be there doing the melodic synth stuff. And we don't need a gutairist at all.

I wonder if Bill can knock up some drum loops for us...

11) Name one cover version of a song that whups the ass of the original.

None. I hate covers. Never liked one.

12) Speaking of covers, name a song that always struck you as a great song if done by someone else.

15) Fat Elvis or skinny Elvis?

16) If all four Beatles were still alive, would they have cashed in on a Millenium reunion concert?

Damn right they would have.

17) Will there EVER be a more unrealistic movie moment than Peter Frampton and the Bee Gees beating up Aerosmith in the "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" movie?

I don't think you've seen the Spice Girls Movie have you?

18) Bono has been mentioned as a candidate to head the World Bank. Would you let Bono manage YOUR finances?

Why wouldn't I let Bono manage my finances?

19) Would you let MC Hammer manage your finances?

Well no one would be touchin' them.

20) Lastly, the infamous "desert island" question -- pick five CDs you'd take with you to a desert island. To add to degree of difficulty, no Greatest Hits allowed.

Front Line Assembly - Hard Wired
VNV Nation - Futureperfect
Apoptygma Berzerk - Harmonizer
Delerium - Faces, Forms and Illusions.

Can I say VG soundtracks? I'ld say the Freespace 2 soundtrack without a damn doubt. I know it didn't have a CD release, but I ripped the songs from it, I could just burn them to a CD and instant soundtrack!

Don't know... Guano Apes maybe?
10) Pick your dream band -- at the very least, vocalist, guitar, bass, drums. If you want to include a second guitarist, keyboards, theremin, lute, xylophone, whatnot... live it up, but you gotta start with the basics.

Tainted Love - Marilyn Manson or It's my Life with No Doubt.
