Books for Spore Fans
« on: June 14, 2005, 09:36:54 am »
Go to Amazon.com or check out your local library for these books:

Aliens and Alien Societies (Science Fiction Writing Series)
by Stanley Schmidt (My Personal Favorite)

After Man : A Zoology of the Future
by Dougal Dixon

The New Dinosaurs: An Alternative Evolution
by Dougal Dixon

Barlowe's Guide to Extraterrestrials : Great Aliens from Science Fiction Literature
by Wayne Douglas Barlowe, Ian Summers, Beth Meacham

The Wildlife of Star Wars: A Field Guide
by Terryl Whitlatch, Bob Carrau

-----

This is the book the discovery channel show is based on:

Expedition : Being and Account in Words and Artwork of the 2358 A.D. Voyage to Darwin IV
by Wayne Douglas Barlowe

-----

These two are based on the Animal Planet miniseries:

The Future is Wild
by Dougal Dixon, John Adams

The Wild World of the Future (Animal Planet)
by Claire Pye, John Adams, Dougal Dixon, Peter Bull Art Studio Ill (Corporate Author), Mel Pickering (Illustrator)

-----

Haven't personally read these, but seen a lot about them:

Extraterrestrials: A Field Guide for Earthlings
by Terence Dickinson, Adolf Schaller

The Science of Aliens
by Clifford A. Pickover, Clifford Pickover

World Building (Science Fiction Writing)
by Stephen Gillett, Ben Bova

Future Evolution
by Peter Ward

The Alien Life of Wayne Barlowe
by Wayne Barlowe

Man After Man: An Anthropology of the Future
by Dougal Dixon, Philip Hood (Illustrator)

The Katurran Odyssey
by David Michael Wieger, Terryl Whitlatch (Creator)

The World of the Dark Crystal: The Collector's Edition
by Brian Froud

-----

If you're looking for something darker, search Amazon for "H.R. Geiger".

Also, do a search (on Amazon or at least Google) for "Burgess shale". These are fossils of creatures found on Earth that are unlike any known modern species.

-----

Check them out - lots of good info in those - Many of them just have big color illustrations if you don't feel like reading and just want some visual inspiration. But you don't have to take my word for it...

I'm Levar Burton, and from all of us here at Reading Rainbow, I'll see ya next time!

Great list!  I've loved Dougal Dixon since I was a child.  He's got some very cool ideas.

Dunno about Giger though.  He's made a lot of cool critters, but he's also made some... questionable "landscapes" and the like.

Not a big fan myself, but Will did say Spore will be able to make anything "from Pixar to Giger" so I figured I'd mention him.

But that moreso give a theoretical mechanism of change, less of ideas for critters.. :)

"The Planiverse" by A.K. Dewdney

A handful of good short stories, too:

"Microcosmic God" by Theodore Sturgeon

"Sandkings" by George RR Martin

"The Grow Your Own Universe Kit" http://www.loopguru.demon.co.uk/Grow.html

Wow, I read that "Grow Your Own Universe Kit" story, and it was pretty wild.

Ringworld - Larry Niven

The Ringworld Engineers - Larry Niven

The Ringworld Throne - Larry Niven

All very entertaining and the physics is baffling.  Basically it's the idea that Halo ripped off.

I thought that Phillip Jose Farmer wrote those books.

P.S.  Have you ever heard of Jack L. Chalker?

Dragon's Egg.  Ultradense blob creatures evolve on a Neutron Star.
I have been told
not by one but two of my lovers
that I've got a heart of gold
but I'm unable to share it with others
They call me a poet who'll never have a poem
a tiger with no taste for bone
I'm the wonderful wonderful wizard who's waltzing alone
