TV / A Series of Unfortunate Events
« on: January 14, 2017, 12:32:05 am »
So one of my favorite books series from my childhood has been turned into a show on Netflix. And it's great. It's better than great. I'm not sure if it's nostalgia or the show is actually really good, but I am really enjoying the series. It's about a trio of children who are quickly orphaned, who are ushered through a sequence of absurd (unfortunate) events by people in positions of authority who don't take them seriously. They overcome (kinda?) through their own unique skills and their friendship! The fourth wall is occasionally broken in humorous ways! There are loads of literary references! It has the narrator from the books! It isn't the same as that mediocre movie with Jim Carrey or whoever it was!

I never finished the series as a kid; for some reason I stopped reading at the 7th book. The show makes me want to go back and read them again despite being well outside of the target audience at this point. Maybe it would be simpler to have children, raise them, and use that as an excuse to read the books to them...

Anyway, I recommend the series. Heartily.

PC Games / Titanfall (BETA?)
« on: February 16, 2014, 03:55:41 am »
So, Titanfall is apparently going into open beta on PC soon. Any interest in playing a few matches together?

PC Games / Scrolls
« on: February 03, 2014, 11:04:08 pm »
Scrolls is that "new" Mojang game that came out a while ago that you may or may not have heard about. It's a trading card game, but after paying the base price, you don't need to pay a cent to get new cards. Also, there's a kinda...board-strategy aspect with positioning and such to the game. Lots of fun! Check it out.

PC Games / Payday 2

PC Games / ArmA 2: Free
« on: June 10, 2011, 09:36:10 am »

Some question and answer thread somewhere:

Basically, it's ArmA 2 with no singleplayer, worse graphics, and no add-on/mod support, but it's free. As in 0 money. I figure this is a pretty good deal. Now to wait for it to release.

Everything Else / Salad!
« on: December 21, 2010, 01:41:10 pm »
Steak is wonderful, but sometimes you're hit with a need to eat some of the autotrophic fruits of the earth. Carrots! Spinach! Tomatoes!

When the craving to consume the lush vegetation of nature hits, what do you guys generally eat? Does this differ from what you want to eat? Favorite/Least favorite dressing? Do you prefer peppers ground into your salad? Do you like non-vegetable things in your salad, like cheese or perhaps bacon bits? What kinds of salads do you/can you make? What do you like to drink with your salad? Or are you one of those abnormal people that hates salad?

Myself, I enjoy a Caesar salad. Nothing much to it, pretty simple to make, tastes decent. However, one of my favorite salads is cranberry walnut salad. Basically you've got the normal leafy stuff, with cranberries, roasted walnuts (perhaps glazed with honey), and feta cheese. Once had a variation of that salad that included slices of green apple. That was quite a good dinner. Can't remember where I had that, though.

On the subject of dressing: I don't like sweet dressing. Ranch, euch. Is honeymustard even considered a dressing? I prefer not to think about that possibility. Anyway, if I must have a dressing, vinaigrette is generally the choice. I find cheese to be a decent substitute though. I enjoy blue cheese, and feta is good as well. Mozzarella slices go well with tomato salad.

Yes, I poached sgore's thread idea on a whim. :P

I haven't seen the first season, but I've watched all the second season episodes, and I must say, I do quite enjoy this show. Probably gonna pick up the 1st season on DVD sometime.

Todd needs to become a villain. Please.

Books / Literary Cage Match

This seems to be a relatively minor little match, but I'm still wanting to gather votes for Cthulhu. And Hiro Protagonist. Looks fun.

TV / Heroes: Season 4/Volume 5; "Redemption"
« on: April 27, 2009, 07:34:46 pm »
Well, so far all we have is the clip from the finale of season 3...

-SylarNathan doesn't revert to being Sylar, but the "hunger" does make him murderous again.
-Hiro does something crazy because of his loss of powers
-WaterNikki meets IceNikki2=holy crap! (ok this is more of a joke, I really don't want any more Nikki's...keep 'em alive or don't.)
-Peter is back to his old (almost) omnipotent self. I think we'll be seeing more emo.

Everything Else / What's Philosophy Do You Follow? (Quiz)
« on: January 05, 2009, 04:29:07 pm »
So I found this philosophy quiz after clicking a link on Brandonazz's profile, which lead to his blog, which lead to me looking up this quiz, and it seems pretty interesting. Unsurprisingly, I turned out to be a selfish bastard...sorta. The quiz is two pages long and shouldn't take you much time.

Anyway, here's how I scored...

You Scored as Strong Egoism

Your life is very much guided by the concept of Egoism: You work primarily to promote your own interests.
I swear by my life, and my love of it, that I will never live for the sake of another man, nor ask another man to live for mine.
I am not primarily an advocate of capitalism, but of egoism; and I am not primarily an advocate of egoism, but of reason. If one recognizes the supremacy of reason and applies it consistently, all the rest follows.
-Ayn Rand

Console Games / Mirror's Edge
« on: November 10, 2008, 06:19:08 pm »
Wow. Search says there's no thread...

Uhh, anyway. Game comes out tomorrow. For those who don't know this is the game in which you play as faith, a runner (carries messages, uses parkour a lot) in a dystopian society or something like that. Demo is out on xbox live. It's short, but fun. Very different from a lot of games that are coming out around now.

TV / Heroes: Villains (Season 3) *Major Spoilers (New: Spoiler Tags!)*
« on: August 22, 2008, 07:24:27 pm »
One month til the next season is out! Yay. Anyway, I'm excited about it. And I've read in an interview that any characters that die this season stay did. No magical claire blood? And I think they also mentioned claire going through...I dunno, something like what matt went through when he discovered he had more powers than just simple mind reading. I'm expecting something like radical regeneration from Treason by Orson Scott Card. The main character of the novel regenerated body parts he wasn't missing, especially when he wasn't using energy for much else, so he grows like, 4 extra arms, 3 spare legs, another nose, etc.

Then again I could be totally off.

Anyway, here's a promo...trailer..thing.

Movies / A 300 follow-up? HELL YEAH!

Yay. I just wonder what historical event they'll cover this time. I'm sure it'll be just as awesome.
