I think the inherent problem with modern day games is the fact that you're being sold the rights to play a game as opposed to the game itself. Hence the EULA, which pretty much tells you what you can and cannot do with this software. Think of it as if you leased a building, you can't tear down the building if you're not given the rights to, you can't renovate the building if you don't have the rights, to, you can't even paint the building without the rights to. I guess on a really abstract level that would be a similar thing, since intellectual stuff is more like having a machine that makes buildings, but you're only allowed to make a building for yourself and not one for all your friends even though that machine could make an indefinite amount of buildings. In the case of DRM, that machine can only make a limited amount of buildings, but then someone messes with the machine so that it can make an infinite amount of buildings and gives them away anyways. This isn't really going anywhere, but the main point is that developers need to stop focusing on the pirates and start focusing on making games that sell so the piracy becomes insignificant.

Let's pretend I have 100 friends (or seeing as how unlikely that is, let's say I go to a school with 100 students), and after I finish a game I lend one of those copies to one of the students. After he finishes it, I lend it to another until all 100 of them have played it and finished it.

Is that piracy? If not, then what is the difference between piracy and sharing? Is it the scale? In that case, let's change the above example so that I go to a school with 1000 students, or even 10000. I think we need a better definition of piracy before we go around concluding things.

I've just been creeping out from my home system, blowing up people who attack me, and buying my ally's systems. So far I've bought out 3 empires, and killed off 3.

All green, shaman on normal. Started off a little rough but a allied a nearby empire which helped me fight off my enemies. Only problems now are the occasional pirate attacks (which I ignore), Grox attacks on my far flung colonies (which I also ignore), grey attacks on my inner colonies, which I wipe out easily, and the very rare eco-disaster, which I sort of wish I had more of, if only to get the badge.

Autosave can just as easily mess you up, since there are not multiple saves.
Maybe they could have a little window that pops up every so often (maybe you can adjust the intervals) reminding you to save.

I took out their home system (the one that's 1pc from the core) with 2 planetbusters to the face, but to no avail. I even set up a colony on the remaining planet in the system. My new goal is to cut a swath through them to connect my existing colonies with the core colony.

I've been watching this game for a few years (can't remember how many exactly) and I have to say it's come a long way since I first saw the amazing videos originally shown at GDC '05 (I think it was). I'd would easily plop down $100 to play that version of Spore, not the one that they've bent over backwards to ruin with cutesy stuff and cheesy facial expressions in addition to the content they've gutted. Instead they've decided to release what could potentially be the biggest flop of the decade, right up there with E.T. on the scale of epic failness. Personally, if I find myself playing anything this Fall, I'm pretty confident it will be Fallout 3, and unless Spore turns out to be as good as I had hoped it would be two years ago, then I fully intend to avoid it entirely.

Well it's official, EA killed Will Wright and Spore is vaporware. Maybe I'll head over to one of those forums waiting for Duke Nukem Forever to come out.

Totally true, too bad the cheapest copy I can find is 80 some dollars.
