The Grindhouse; 2 Movies for the Price of One

GRIND HOUSE (n)
A theater playing back to back films exploiting sex, violence, and other extreme subject matter.

Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez are apparently teaming up for a double feature, Quentin's "Death Proof" and Rodriguez's "Planet Terror". Pushing boundaries in gore blah blah blah.

There's an amputee that sticks guns in her nub and proceeds to kick ass with it.  That's reason enough to go.

I like Tarantino and Rodriguez but for some reason Grindhouse seems... too corny. Like Mars Attack, they aren't trying to hide the fact that they are making a parody/homeage to old movies but in their try they just end up being bad.

Despite this I still hope that this movie is gonna be good, but the nagging feeling I described above is always present.

It might be good. It sounds a bit like Sin City.

Terror Planet - Saw the trailer and it looks promising.

Then again...

Kill Bill, saw the trailer, saw part 1, was too bored to bother with part 2 (luckily I saw the condensed version on YouTUbe). Hopefully Tarantino can tell a short story better than he can tell a long one. Dusk til Dawn was another great starting flick that turned to crap by the end. Pulp Fiction was funny in bits but had too much 'shock' attempted and killed off the story.

I saw Grindhouse, and I gotta admit, it was a pretty good movie. I was laughing the whole way through, and I enjoyed almost every moment, of both movies.

However, I will say that Planet Terror was a much better movie than Death Proof, and not just because it was actually a homage. Death Proof was just another Tarantino movie thinly disguised as a true grindhouse flick. Though I will say that the ending was superb, the first hour of his film was almost boring. Though it did bring back fond memories of Vanishing Point, and makes me want a 1970 Dodge Challenger.

I can't believe they are splitting up grindhouse because of poor boxoffice sales. You better be able to buy it on DVD as one movie.

I agree. The whole reason for seeing it is to get the double feature experience. Otherwise, I would've seen Planet Terror and just skipped Death Proof.

Now the Europeans, boy did Dimension and Troublemaker screw the pooch on that deal. They not only are blatantly milking them for money, they also seem to be insulting their intelligence.

Jay I'm in New Zealand, I can watch the double feature!
Anyway, after this I want a real Tarantino movie, not one of his play projects.

I keep meaning to comment on the Grindhouse movies.

PLANET TERROR was awsome as an over the top B Zombie movie where they actually were able to handle multiple characters and tell a somewhat twisted story. The movie was also modified to look like it was worn out in parts (including the film breaking at one point and skipping ahead about 8 minutes) which once you realise it is intented for the scenes actually helps the presentation. There are also some repeat characters from other movies (The old sheriff dude from Dusk til Dawn for example).

There is also a fake trailer at the beginning of Planet Terror for 'Machette' which is an absolut riot if you've seen the Spy Kids movies (I have kids, I had to suffer) which were also done by Rodregez.

So, if you are looking for a stupidly funny zombiesk movie, check out Planet Terror. (oh Tarnetino's camio isn't very long, but is annoying as always).

DEATH PROOF

Never have I hated most of a movie so much. Never have I wanted to fly out to Hollywood and find Tarentino and kick him in the nads (actually in this context that might be kind of hard) than I did when I started watching this. But, it is a good movie.

Here is the deal without ruining the movie for anybody.

1. Start the movie, listen to the girls in the car talk until your brain starts melting, it should take about 2 minutes I figure.
2. Fast forward until you see Kurt Russell then watch the movie, when he is not in the scene fast forward again.
3. Fast forward until the lap dance scene (which you can skip too, not even crane could help hold your attention any longer than this scene can).
4. When everybody is leaving the bar, start watching the movie.
5. When the sheriff is talking, you can skip it if you want. The deputy is the guys son in real life, and basically the conversation just using up all the lines he hasn't found a place for in the other movies he has been in.
6. "14 months later" now you can let the movie play out. Again we have to listen to four women talking about stupid crap, but at least they are entertaining and not stoned or drunk or half asleep. The movie then actaully picks up speed and runs out to a great finish.

I will give Tarentino credit, the actual film work in the last half of Death Proof took many of the great apesct fo Vanishing Point to heart.

Oh anybody curious about the Challenger, there was a movie in 1972 called 'Vanishing Point' (A must see in my opinon) about a guy in a Challenger that has to get it to California over night. It is a classic car chase flick. There was a remake in the 1990s but it SUUuuuuuUUUuuuucked and tried to explain something that didn't need explanation the first time around.
