New Creature - Alroaxt
« on: March 14, 2006, 11:07:56 pm »
While avoiding doing fixing up my french paper, I decided to doodle for a bit.  I have a total lack of artistic skills, so I tried my best.  Also, been lurking the forums for a couple of weeks and decided to finally register.  Anyways, here it is:

The Alroaxt

Edit:  Updated with a color picture

This creature is a graceful, and wise one that has two natural weapons.  Its tail (which was obviously inspired by a scorpion's) can puncture any hide, fur, or scale, and leave a gaping wound to its victim.  Although it lacks poison, the gash caused by the attack is vulnurable to infections.  Its second weapon are its strong legs which it can use to leap into the air and claw at its prey.  While they do have wings, they are usually used for show, or to glide short distances.  Their hard helm like structure at the top of the skull is a vestigial feature that was used by males to headbutt each other in order to mate.

They are very religious, and are called zealots by other races.  Though they are physically weak, they are extremely agile as their slender body allows them to twist and turn almost without limits.

Some more info on their religion.

All Alroaxts belief in the pantheon of 12 gods, which are divided into three groups.

The Path of Harmony:
  • Rak'lo, god of light.
  • Tria, goddess of beauty.
  • Aa'le, god of valor.
  • Pilaso, god of the sun.

The Scales of Balance:
  • Shii, goddess of weather.
  • Soast, god of the elements.
  • Ji'Kla, goddess of knowledge.
  • Jokt, god of nature.

The Flow of Chaos:
  • Rika, goddess of the moon.
  • Sirik, god of death.
  • Aa'he, god of war.
  • Hohed, god of decay.

Those who follow the gods in the Path of Harmony believe it is their responsibility to destroy the influence of the gods in the Flow of Chaos, and believe that the Alroaxt who follow the gods of the Scales of Balance are not fulfilling their part by aiding them in their war, and declared them enemies as well.

Those who choose to follow the gods in the Flow of Chaos believe it is their divine right to kill those too weak to defend for themselves.  They view the Alroaxt from the Path of Harmony to be useless, as they aid those who should die due to their inability to cope by themselves.  They believe that since the Scales of Balance also help their sick, and weak, to be inferior to them.

Those in the Scales of Balance would have rather stayed neutral in the war, but the constant attacks by the Flow of Chaos followers, and the constant pressure from those of the Path of Harmony caused them to choose a side, their own.

This divided the world for thousands of years.

Here's a picture of a robe that a priest who follows Ji'Kla wears:

All the Alroaxt's robes have very intricate designs as they love art, and the last tail ornament was added for self defense, as the robe made it hard for them to use their feet for fighting, and priests in all the temples (except the temple of Aa'he) are not allowed to have weapons in their hands.  They required at least one weapon as temples were constantly raided by opposing forces.

wouldnt it make more sense for the scales of balance to occupy territory between the other two?
Sam is basically right, he's just cranky.

Nice creature, very elegant.
I'd like to see what they would end up actually looking like in the game.
I wonder who would win between them and my acers (link in sig)

Actually, when they started in tribes, they all had started with the main focus on the Path of Harmony, and they had evolved in the central continent.  Then they started settling other places of the planets, and when those in the islands saw the power of weather, and their need to understand the world to survive started to increase their faith in the gods of weather and knowledge.  On the other hand, those who moved north to the colder areas, which were inhabited by ferocious creatures, saw that they needed to defend themselves, and could only do so through fighting to survive.  Then they saw the enormous use of their tail, and the pain and agony the infections and rotting of the open flesh did to their enemies.  They then started to follow on the gods of war and decay.

The Alroaxts are very fond of curved shapes, as all of them, with the exception of a couple of individuals who follow Ji'Kla, believe it is the superior line because that's what their bodies are like.

Here is their number system:

They reuse the symbols adding a line at the end beginning with 12.

Here is their language:

Those are the symbols, and the letter in brackets represent the sound they represent using the IPA transcription symbols.  They've got 12 vowel sounds, and 12 consonant sounds.  Don't be surprised at the number of vowel sounds, as english has over 10 too!  Though they do have many less consonant sounds than most human languages (afaik).

Edit:  Heh, just noticed, of the 12 vowel sounds, only 2 are not in english.  Was trying to use different vowel sounds, but meh, there are only so many you can use.

Here are a couple of weapons used by the Alroaxt back in their equivalent to a medieval period:

This one created by smiths of the Path of Harmony, usually only used by generals, and they call it Hope of Aa'le:

This one is created by the Flow of Chaos people, the standard bows of their army, which they dubbed Reach of Rika:

This is their creation theory, as they put it:

The Pure Existance, the Twelve, and the Mixed:

Long ago, before the this world was formed, and before the stars were born, there was something called the Pure Existance.  It was just there, how it came to be was unknown.  It was called the Pure Existance for it had no substance to be tainted, and it had no feelings to defile it.  For an eternity, it was there, thinking but not taking action, until he got tired of sitting.  With a thought, he created the blackness that appears when Pilaso sleeps and Rika wakes.  He gave himself a form, and with a breath, he created the stars.  And finally, with a mighty swing of its tail, it created all life everywhere.

For much longer than any mortal can comprehend, life existed without meaning, and this bored the Pure Existance.  It left its creations, but not without his mark.  It had 12 offspring to rule over the universe, and left them to their own designs.  For billions of years, the siblings pondered, and argued, and each made their own sentient races on other planets.  Then they all reached Siakta at the same time, and agreed to create a race that all 12 would shape.  Then born we were, the Alroaxt, above all other mortal beings in the universe, for we were a collaboration of all gods.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is where the similarities of the three different factions end.

According to the Path of Harmony:

For centuries, we were blind to our great destiny, until Rak'lo illuminated our path.  From there, Tria filled our world with her creations, and Pilaso kept us company in this corner of the universe.  Though that did not come without consequence, for Rika wanted to keep us all to herself.  Until this day, Rika and Pilaso have been fighting each other, and cannot declare a winner.  Aa'le came to us, in order to help us push forward when Rika is at her strongest.

Afraid for his other creations, Aa'he filled our hearts with strife, so we would fight against each other and not his creations.  For this reason, we must fight the urge to turn on each other.  Aa'he made a pact with Sirik, and Sirik made it so that we would not have eternal life.  Hohed, regretful of having participated in our creation, has made us suffer through disease, wishing to erase what he considers his mistake.

Symbol of Pilaso:

When they had first developped tribes, they were all focused on the main continent, the one that the Path of Harmony currently resides in.  Most tribes worshipped the gods of the Path of Harmony, but some worshipped the Flow of Chaos, and this was the cause for the first few battles.

Here is a female shaman of Aa'he:

The tribes that worshipped the Path of Harmony far outnumbered those that didn't, and they eventually gained control of the entire area up to the largest lake, and at that time, that was were all the Alroaxt were located.

From Beasts to the Pathfinder Empire:

As soon as they had gained a strong superiority to the other tribes, the tribes of the Path of Harmony had joined together and called themselves the Pathfinders.  They had decided to build a large settlement where all of their allied tribes could live, and they called it Hevest, Graceful Path, which was built at the northernmost coast of the large lake, which they called Soast's Tear.  Soon, Alroaxts who followed the Path of Harmony all came to this city.  It had grown exponentially, though it soon came under attack by the Flow of Chaos tribes of the Alroaxt.  At that point in time, there were only between two or four tribes who followed the Scales of Balance, and they were welcomed into Hevest.

The city was soon fortified to help fend off the attacks.

Here is a picture of the main gate of hevest, with the first stone building being built, and a hut that tribes were still living in.  It was the foundation for the first empire:

It was only a couple of decades later that the tribes of the Flow of Chaos were subjugated, but they were allowed into all of the empire's cities.  It was this the first and only time between the beginning of a civilization and the space age that all Alroaxt were united.  It was an uneasy peace, but it lasted for more than 200 years.

Edit: An explanation on female with the large head structure.

Originally, when it first appeared, it was used for helping the Alroaxt deal with the high temperatures that would be reached when Siakta was closest to its star.  All alroaxt, male or female, had it for that purpose.  Later, when they started finding shaded locations such as forests, or caves, it lost its originally purpose and then began to be used by the males in headbutting contests.

When they became more sentient and civilized, that practice was lost, but the plate was still there.

Second Edit:  Very important note, when Hevest was built, was when they started counting the years.  Although at that time, it was different, modern day Alroaxt count the building of Hevest as HB, or 'Hevest Built'.

Feel free to post critizism, good or bad.  Also, if anyone would like to do an actual drawing of the Alroaxt, I'd be quite grateful.  As you can see, I suck with drawing, but I try my best to let my ideas take shape.  Reason I'm going so slow is cause they developped quite slow.  They were at war for thousands of years, making their scientific advancements very slow as they focused more on staying alive than trying to understand the world (except for the scales of balance).

This is the symbol of Rika.  The only thing reflecting from that small pool is the moon to signify her importance.

The Greed and the Lost:

At the height of the united Pathfinder empire, they had build several cities, and most of the Alroaxt were living in the new stone houses, having left their tribalistic culture behind.  But the empire wanted more, and it had decreed that this entire world would be theirs for the taking.  They made two very large exploration parties, one going north to the, as they called it, "chiolp ñalo" or cold place.  The other was sent south, past Soast's Tear and into the "chiolp maowtala", the turbulant place.

Though what the empire did not know, was that after 150 years of peace, there still was a secret society that primarily worshipped the Flow of Chaos, and thought this was the perfect time to break free.  Through unseen deaths, manipulations, extortions, and bribes, the Flow of Chaos followers gained a majority in the exploration party going north.  They used the "Chiertanidsoast", or Swiftness of Soast's birds:

To send messeges between the exploration party and their base in one of the northern cities.  Soon though, the exploration party had gotten into various dangerous battles with the nonsentient, but extremely strong animals of the north.  Others, succumbed to the diseases that the smaller vermin like animals carried, and others still, could not deal with the cold blasts of wind that came from the northwest.  Soon, even the most loyal of Pathfinders began to lose hope, and their faith.  At this time, the surviving loyalists of the Flow of Chaos unveiled themselves, and started preaching their sermons to the disillusioned party, who were easily swayed.  It was 162 years after the formation of Hevest that this party decided to cut all communications with the Pathfinder empire.  Those in the empire thought they were lost, and would not come back.  They decided to send another party up north to find them...

No pictures this time, just going to explain a couple of things for their galactic age.

The Alroaxt are an ancient race.  Since the building of their first city, to their first outing into space, it took them 35,000 years.  They were among the first to reach space, but they were not interested in exploring it too much.  In the end, the race was finally united again by an unexpected turn of events.  Since they could never achieve perfect happyness, the different factions were in control of different things.

The Path of Harmony faction was placed in charge of diplomatic dealings with other races.  Their space ships have no weapons, though they did have a galactic military (since they reached the galactic age before uniting) mostly consisting of Alroaxt wearing regular standard uniforms, wielding weapons, that much to their style, appear magical and are very elegant.

The Scales of Balance faction was placed in charge of trading with other races.  Again, their space ships have no weapons.  Their galactic age military are Alroaxt who wear large robotic armor, and sometimes even actual mech like robots.  These were much more dull than their Harmony counterparts, but their weapons were much more effective.

The Flow of Chaos faction was in charge of their military dealings with other races.  The smallest of the space ships, but also the only one fitted with weapons and cloaking devices.  Their military consists of Alroaxt who were painfully inserted with robotic parts.  Not one Chaos Alroaxt in their military had less than 4 usuable weapons.  The original procedure of replacing organic parts with robotic ones was invented with the Balance faction, but they scrapped it due to the pain it caused on the soldier.  The Chaos military also placed a device that injected a certain fluid into their soldiers' system to enrage them.

As for city life, all cities have one central district.  This district is neutral, and it is illegal to have any signs of any god within it.  Mostly those few Alroaxt confortable not aligning themselves with any one god live here, and most of the business and jobs are in the central districts.  Then its the outer districts, these are more like suburbs.  Here, they are seperated into the Harmony, Balance, and Chaos followers.  To avoid as much conflict as possible, the Balance suburbs are placed in between the other two.  The decree to make everyone happy was that you could live as you wished, as long as you did nothing that the other party did not want you to do.
