Yeah, so if brain was very expensive, you would be sacrificing making your creatures massively powerful, and instead making them massively intelligent.  I mean look at humans - plenty of things could rip us apart in this world if we had no weapons, heck even if we did have a weapon!  We just rule because we are so intelligent (speaking from a scientific perspective).  It's just a different way to go about the game i guess.  Intelligent beings would get the UFO quicker than more physical creatures, for example, i would imagine.

Right. I misunderstood at some point, though I'm not sure where -- of course you wouldn't have much in the way of "evolutionary currency" left after blowing it all on intelligence, so other aspects would have to suffer. You sir were correct. ;D

Different beings evolve to become more intelligent than others.  It would be folly NOT to include brain structure/power/whatever into the game.  For example, one could have a supremely intelligent being with some very effective machines, but it wouldn't be able to fight/survive in the open without it's machines to help it out.  I would imagine you sacrifice brain for brawn or vice versa.

That would be the realistic approach, yeah. In the example of the Tail-handed Tripods we didn't see any of the sacrificing brawns for brains, though that doesn't mean it's not there: Will just didn't show us. ;) He seems to have mentioned that brains are the most expensive, however, which does lend no small amount of credibility to the notion of Brain being part of the creature editor. It seems likely I misremembered.

I would like to see how the menus look.  Once you click one of those icons does it pop up a window of the different kinds of legs for example then would go further into the actual leg selection.

No, if you consult the spore_creature.jpg screenshot, you can see that the Arm icon is highlighted (okay, it's only slightly more blue than the other icons :P), and the blue cursor thing is hovering in the area of the creature's "flippers". Presumably the icons act as a "lock on/off" switch for certain bodyparts, so you don't mess up the whole creature when all you wanted to do was stretch their legs a little, for example.

This is conjecture, of course. Given the facial editor of Sims 2, which is the only thing we can liken to how the creatur editor will work, it is likely that you'll have both: the option to select a predefined leg/arm/hand/whatever, or edit them yourself.

Judging from the screenshot/picture of possible creatures, I'd wager that the range of possible headshapes is so large that it probably would be restrictive to lock the brain to a certain part of the body.

On the other hand, was a Brain category even definitely mentioned? I only recall a mentioning of "evolving sentience", which struck me as independent from the design of one's creature. As in, it's a characteristic bought seperately from body modifications,

Brain? It doesn't look like I'd expect it to (that is, a cartoony caricature of one), but it's certainly a possibility.

Now that I look at the screenshot again, I think the second icon from the top is more likely Arms than Tail or Bones. Which gives us a new option for the last two. Perhaps the one second to last is Spine?

Hmmm. Certainly possible, though wouldn't that be redundant since we have a Feet icon already? Judging by the Sims 2 editor, such redundancy is unlikely... although it could very well be a more general category combining several of the categories I listed above, kind of like Sims 2 has a Face category, and individual Facial Structure ones as well.

Going by this pic, I think the icons to the left represent:

  • Torso
  • Bones (?) or Tail
  • Legs
  • Feet
  • Hands
  • Head (?)
  • ???
  • ???

The last two don't make sense to me because the screenshot is blurry and small. :/ One can only hope for more detailed ones later on.
