New Top Gear and Not Top Gear
« on: May 30, 2016, 01:53:37 pm »
New Top Gear premieres on BBC America tonight, I think it already aired on BBC.  Anyone going to watch the trainwreck with me?  And we're still waiting on the Amazon show.

Probably not a Goat, either.

I have no opinions on LeBlanc either way, but I really dislike Brand and I'm not aware of him having any knowledge or interest in cars.  Joey at least apparently likes cars.

The BBC cemented the show's failure by putting Matt LeBlanc in it.  Not only does casting an American not make the show more appealing to Americans, but casting Matt LeBlanc is both unappealing and insulting to Americans.  I am not sure the British analog, maybe casting Russell Brand as a representative Brit to try to make a show more appealing to the British.

I think you may have the situation backwards actually. I've never known anyone here to dislike Matt Leblanc, he's fondly remembered from Friends and he also played a fairly likeable (if dumb!) version of himself (that is, the character WAS Matt Leblanc) on a sitcom called Episodes.

If anything what's more likely to put off UK viewers is Chris Evans, who many people find annoying (though his breakfast-time radio show is pretty popular).
Sam is basically right, he's just cranky.

Finished the new episode and thought it was okay if you take it as a new show.  Chris Evans was trying too hard and shouting too much.  References to the old hosts felt forced but kind of required.  I thought Matt Leblanc did a good job.  Apparently they've separated the show into two parts with a new show called Extra Gear.  So Top Gear will be the flashy parts with stunts and celebrities, and Extra Gear will have people who actually know about cars doing the news and behind the scenes stuff.

I'll give it the chance to grow out of the shadow of the old show, and keep waiting for The Grand Tour on Amazon.
