So, what do you think?

I think it looks kinda cool, but not sure I would get one.

Movies / Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief
« on: February 12, 2010, 02:12:19 am »
(It's 3am, and I kinda go off-topic. Sorry)

The Olympians book series is a great read. It can get a tad childish, but overall I really like it.
Today the first movie is out. I'm going to go see it this morning.

You know, I'm glad they made a movie of it. However, books can be a personal thing, and it's kinda scary "sharing that with the world."

Ok, let's break it down into two scenarios:

Scenario 1: The movie is good
 • Everyone sees it, and you don't feel like it's special anymore (see Harry Potter)
 • It blows up into a huge cult hit, and you hate yourself for liking it to begin with (see Twilight)
Bottom line: Ether way, they make more (which could be good or bad)

Scenario 2: The movie is bad
 • You still like the books, and feel like you have to defend the franchise to everyone.
Bottom line: They make more movies which makes it worse, or they stop and you are stuck with the books.

Now you see the problem I run into with book movies. Anyway, moving on...

Anyone going to see it? Did anyone read the books?
If you like Greek mythology, then you'll like this series.

TV / The IT Crowd Season 1-3
« on: February 10, 2010, 03:17:07 am »
(Ok, yes, I'm behind the times, but we don't get many TV shows from other country's here)

I just heard about this from a friend, and I ended up getting the whole series because it's so funny.
Here is one of my favorite clips (can't embed it):

The Internet

Great show. Between this and Top Gear, I'm starting to like British TV more then American TV (Not too hard, but still).

Everything Else / Holiday Gift Ideas
« on: December 15, 2009, 01:33:27 pm »
I wanted to make a thread were we help each other buy gifts for people for Christmas/haiku/Festivise/etc
This is kinda like the "Advice on buying or building a PC or Laptop" thread, but for anything you wanted to buy for someone this holiday.

Anyway, I want to get this for my dad for Christmas:

Roku HD Player

He's also getting a new TV from my mom, and I thought this would go well together.
It's kinda of what my family calls a "Coke Truck" gift. (I wont go into the story, but basically means it's a gift that you give to someone in which you hope to use also)

What would be cool, is if I got this along with an Eye-fi Share Card, and set it up so his photos he takes would go to flickr. Then he could use the roku player to view his photos. (I know he could just plug the camera into the TV, but this is more fun ;D )
That might be a next year thing though.

I like the idea of Netflix Streaming, and Pandora radio, plus that flickr idea.

What do you think? Or do you have a better idea? I only have $200 to spend on gifts this year.

TV / Top Gear: Season 14
« on: November 15, 2009, 06:32:49 pm »
Yay! New Top Gear aired today.

Anyone watch it? It's a really good show even if your not that into cars. I'll post more after I watch the first episode.

Everything Else / Bobby Kotick: The Video Game Devil
« on: September 19, 2009, 10:18:16 pm »
(I know this article is some what old, but I didn't see anyone talking about it here)
I suppose I really shouldn't fuel the fire, but you guys need to read this:

Bobby Kotick Interview

I'll pull out a few key quotes if you don't feel like reading the whole thing:
"We have a real culture of thrift. The goal that I had in bringing a lot of the packaged goods folks into Activision about 10 years ago was to take all the fun out of making video games."

"We are very good at keeping people focused on the deep depression."

I think we definitely have been able to instill the culture, the skepticism and pessimism and fear

and this old chestnut, that I have to bring up again:

"[Those games] don't have the potential to be exploited every year on every platform with clear sequel potential and have the potential to become $100 million dollar franchises

What are your thoughts? I know video games are a business, and he point of a business is to make money. But isn't he taking this a bit far?

PC Games / Torchlight
« on: September 17, 2009, 11:12:09 pm »
Has anyone seen this?

It's a diablo game made by the guys who made the original diablo/diablo II.
The team is mainly the group from flagship studios who made one of my favorite MMO's: Mythos.

It comes out next month, and is only $20 for a single player game. The multiplayer will be later.
If you know me, you would know I love me some ARPG's

I'll be buying it since it's only $20. I'll let you know how it is.

Console Games / Shadow Complex
« on: August 13, 2009, 05:35:31 pm »
I think this is going to be the only xbox summer of arcade game I'm going to get.

Looks really cool. The developers even admit it's a HD Metriod mania like game.

Check it out:

Console Games / Kodu Game Lab Xbox Live
« on: July 27, 2009, 05:41:30 pm »
I've been wanting to try out some indie games on xbox live, but haven't heard of anything really good till now.
I'm catching up on old podcasts of KOXM, and heard about Kodu Game Lab

It's a simple game making... game... thingy

Anyway, it's lot of fun making your own "game"
Like I said, it's very simple, but that also makes it easy to use. The GUI is easy, and inviting.

Basically, your just doing if that then statements, but you write the "code" with pictures.
You can even trade levels online.

It's not Garry's mod, or even little big planet, but it is a lot of fun.
Plus it could be good for kids.

Try out the free demo and tell me what you think.

Console Games / Sacred 2
« on: July 21, 2009, 12:27:26 am »
(I looked all over for a thread on it, but couldn't find anything.)

I've heard this game called "The worst game ever made", but I've also heard this game referred to as a great Diablo 2 clone.

As for the reviews they are all over the board. Here is one giving it a good review.

I like the TRS guys, and I trust them.
However, I also have some friends at GameStop who said people always return it.

So which is it? Has anyone played it? What do you think?

I want a competent Diablo knock off that has a bunch of loot whoring. (I'm not playing WoW though)
This seams to be a great game, but I'm just not sure

If you have played it please post and tell me what you think.
I think I'll get it for 360 tomorrow.

Ether way, I have low expectations, and I hope I'm surprised.

Wow, this game is great. It has some problems, sure. But it's a lot of fun :)

If you want diablo on the 360, you can't go wrong with this.

If anyone has it let me know (Doesn't seam to be very popular), and we can team up. I need to get Xbox Live Gold to play, but this might get me to do it.

PC Games / Drive Benchmarks
« on: July 14, 2009, 05:03:38 am »
(I wasn't sure where to put this. We need a general tech talk topic)

If you feel like posting your drive benchmarks I used Crystal Disk Mark to test.

Anyway, like I have stated in earlier posts I'm going to upgrade my Eee PC 900a SSD.
Well, the drive should arrive today, so I thought I would post some benchmarks for fun/showing how much the stock SSD sucks.

So here we go

Up 1st for comparison is my Western Digital 1TB Black Hard Drive. This thing is a beast, with 32MB of cache and spins at 7200 RPM:

Not bad at all. The main thing you want to look at is the 1st bar, since I think that's what drives are measured in. (sequential read/write speed at 100MB)

Next up is my run of the mill hard drive that came with my computer. It's 750gigs, but that's all that is going for it:

As you can see, this hard drive is about half the speed on my black drive.

Now on to the slow SSD:

Man, that is dog slow, but the funny thing is that normal read and the random read are almost the same since it's flash based.

I'll post the new SSD speeds once I get it up and running.
(One thing to consider with these results is that I'm using 2 different computers, so that may skew the data a little. However, they are all SATA dives)

Ok, so I got the new drive, and ghosted the image back on. Here are the benchmarks:

As you can see it's a major improvement to the speeds. I didn't get the even faster 16gig version that claims 150MB/s read and 100MB/s write.
It has made a major difference in speed. I clocked it in at 25 second start up.

So in conclusion, stock drives be them HD or SSD suck :P

Everything Else / Best Buy Sucks
« on: April 11, 2009, 03:21:18 pm »
I'm sick of Best Buy being the only game in town, and ripping people off.
I keep hearing all these stories from Gizmodo about Best Buy, and how they keep ripping people off. I miss CompUSA so much...

If you haven't heard anything about this, here are two of the stories Gizmodo reported on:

"Best Buy Sells Egregiously Crappy, 9-Year-Old Hard Drive As New, Then Refuses Refund"

"NSFW: Best Buy Customer Gets Free, Hilariously-Titled Porno With Purchase of DVD Player"

Yes, I know, I should just do all my tech shopping online, but it's fun to browse in person.

What do you guys think?

PC Games / Conficker: The April 1st Worm
« on: March 31, 2009, 06:41:29 pm »

Protect ur windows PC from teh Conficker Worm
